Welcome

The School Games has been on an incredible journey since its inception in 2010. We are now on the next stage

to ensure that it reaches every young person and continues to drive competitive school sport. At the core of this

work is the unwavering belief that competitive school sport should be at the heart of school life

The School Games Vision, Mission and Characteristics

The School Games Levels

Schools and pupils will participate and progress through three levels of competition:

INTRA (Level 1) - sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition INTER (Level 2) - individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions

COUNTY (Level 3) – the county/area will stage multi-sport School Games festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition There will also be an annual School Games National Finals for talented young people involved in the talent pathways and

programmes of the national governing bodies of sport participating in the National Finals. Whilst young people from

county events (L3) and inter (L2)/intra (L1) may attend the National Finals as an athlete or volunteer if their sport is

engaged as per the above, there is no direct or automatic progression in the pathway.

Age Group KS3 must be in school years 7,8 and 9 KS4 must be in school year 10 or 11 ( Year 7, 8, 9 are not eligible to play in KS4 events)

Pathway Regional Finals leading to National finals. Now led by Badminton England as there National Schools Championships.

Size of Team/Squad

Squads will consist of 5 players with any 4 players selected in the team taking part in each match. The selected players shall be arranged (ranked) in order by their singles strength.

Basic Overview Players competing in the final must have represented two school in at least

one previous round.

Each match will consist of 5 games: 2 x singles and 3 x doubles, with each player playing 2 games. This is shown in the playing format for a match below:

1st Game: Singles (No.1 ranked player in the team) 2nd Game: Doubles (the 2 players not selected for a singles game) 3rd Game: Singles (No. 2 or 3 ranked player chosen for singles) 4th Game: Doubles (first singles player + either one of non-singles players) 5th Game: Doubles (second singles player + the other non-singles player)

If a player withdraws during a game then that game is conceded, and the 5th player may be substituted in for further games in that match.

The oncoming player will assume the rank of the replaced player. No changes to the ordering of players will take place, regardless of their grade and rank.

When substituting players during a match the oncoming player will assume the rank of the replaced player

When substituting players before the match has started, alterations to the playing order can be made according to grading and rank.

At the end of the match both team managers must confirm and sign the score sheet before submitting this to the results table

SCORING -Each game will be scored to a maximum of 21 points (time permitting) There will be no extended scoring – games do not have to be won by 2 clear points ( a game can be won 21-20)

Group winners will be decided as follows: Most matches won If 2 teams are tied, the winner of the match between them If 3 or more teams are tied, the team with greater games difference

Maximum 5 in a squad, (3 in a team)

Basic Overview

The game will be played in teams of three, although schools may bring squads of five, which can be rotated between games. All team members must be SEND.

The side playing red throws the first jack. The captain chooses the player on their side to play the jack. The jack must cross the ‘V’ line to be in play.

The player who propels the jack ball also plays their team’s first coloured ball. A player from the opposing side then propels their first coloured ball.

The side furthest from the jack must play until they either manage to get closer to the jack, or run out of balls. The side with remaining balls then propels them.

The end is completed when all balls from both sides have been played (all 13 balls).

If the ball rolls out of bounds, that ball is no longer included in that end.

The blue side starts the second end.

Balls can be propelled in any manner providing the player has direct contact on releasing the ball – players can throw, roll or kick the ball or send it down a ramp.

Pupils can be seated or standing to propel the balls as long as they are behind the delivery line.

Eventually each player throws two balls corresponding to their team colour, red or blue.

The number of ends played is determined by the amount of time available.

After all ends have been completed, the winning side is the team with the higher accumulative score from all ends.

SCORING

An end is scored by awarding one point for every ball of the same colour closer to the jack than the nearest opposing coloured ball.

After both ends have been completed, the winning side is the team with the higher accumulative score from all ends.

Cricket – Lady Tavs (Chance to Compete)

Equipment Schools and clubs to liaise to provide all players with the appropriate cricket clothing, i.e. PE kit. Cricket whites are not necessary. School are encouraged to bring their own cricket to the event (bats, padding and helmets where necessary). Organisers will supply match balls, stumps and pitch markings.

Pathway Regional and National

Size of Team/Squad

Each team comprises of 8 players. Squads are limited to 10 players. Playing conditions – any players involved in an England Development Squad or Kia Super League Regional Development Centre are excluded from this competition. Any teams found to be playing these players will be disqualified. County players ARE eligible.

Basic Overview Boundary sizes shall be 35 yards.

Play should be from one end only (this can be changed for each innings to ensure even pitch wear if required). This helps the game to be played quickly.

Games should last no more than one hour and umpires and officials/teachers are encouraged to have their players ready to bowl and bat.

The pitch length will be 20 yards.

Teams shall consist of 8 players each, a maximum of 10 per squad.

Each match shall consist of one innings, a maximum of seven 6 ball overs.

A maximum one over shall be bowled by each bowler. The nominated wicketkeeper cannot bowl.

Two batters shall be at the wicket at all times during an innings. In the event of a team losing 7 wickets within the permitted 7 overs, the last batter shall continue batting, with the last batter out remaining at the wicket as a non-striker. This is known as ‘Last Batter Stands’.

When a batter reaches or passes a personal total of 20 she shall retire, but may return on the departure of the 7th batter. Retired batters must return in order of their retirement and take the place of the retiring or dismissed batter. Two ‘live’ batters shall be at the wicket until such time as the 7th wicket has fallen. The batter shall retire again when she scores an additional 20 runs on her return to the crease, unless the batting team have no more batters to come in that have also been retired.

If the ball passes, or would have passed, above shoulder height when the ball has pitched, or above waist height without the ball pitching of the batter standing upright at the crease, the umpire at the bowlers end shall call and signal ‘No ball’. If the ball bounces more than twice before reaching the batter this should also be called ‘No ball’. (Three bounces or more before the popping crease) Umpires are instructed to apply a consistent interpretation in regard to calling wide balls. Pitch markings are encouraged to be used to aid this.

If the ball passes either side of the wicket sufficiently wide to make it virtually impossible for the striker to play a ‘normal cricket stroke’ both from where they are standing and from where they should normally be standing at the crease, the Umpire shall call and signal ‘Wide’.

NOTE: The above provision does not apply if the striker makes contact with the ball.

RESULTS The team scoring the most runs in its innings shall be the winner. If the scores of both teams are equal, then the team taking the greater number of wickets shall be the winner. If two teams are level on points at the end of the league stages, then the result between the two sides will determine the overall winner. If this cannot decide the outcome, then run rate will then decide the winners. This is calculated as follows – The total runs scored in the group games are added together with the wickets taken, each wicket taken will count as 10 runs towards the total. This will then be added together and the team with the highest overall score will win if scores are still level after this then it will go to the team who has taken the most wickets in their games. If a result cannot be reached after all this, then a bowl out between the two teams will take place. SCORING

- Standard scoring rules of cricket (runs completed, plus boundary 4s & 6s) as well as:

No Ball

A No ball shall score 2 penalty runs, recorded as a no ball extra

From a No ball struck by the batter, runs shall be scored as in scoring regulations

Law 24.14, stating that a no-ball shall not count as one of the over, shall only be applicable in the 7th over of any innings.

Wide

If a wide ball is called, then 2 runs shall be credited under extras; any additional runs shall be credited under extras every time the batters complete a run, i.e. wide ball plus batters running one run = 3 runs

Law 25.7, stating that a wide ball shall not count as one of the over, shall only be applicable in the 7th over of any innings.

METHODS OF DISMISSAL Apart from the normal methods of dismissal contained in the Laws of Cricket, the following applies: - In a ‘Last Batter Stands’ scenario, if the non-striking batter is run out then this will class as a dismissal, and then innings will be classed as completed. There will be no LBWs unless a batter deliberately blocks the ball in front of the stumps The organiser’s decision is final.

Cricket – Table Cricket

Size of Team/Squad

6 players per team

Basic Overview

The captain will have more of an influential role, reflecting the role batting the

fielding the captain must decide: - The fielding position for each player - Which side the three active fielders will be on. This does not change during the innings, regardless of right or left handed batsman - Who is next to bowl Every player must still bowl one over per innings. At the end of each over the bowler must change field position with the next elected bowler; all other fielders do not change position.

The first over of every innings must be bowled with the swing ball for all six balls. All other bowlers will have the choice of the swing ball or the straight ball. This will encourage greater use of the swing ball and will also increase the skills and understanding of more players.

For standing players there must be a degree of bat angle i.e. the tip of the bat must be touching the table. This rule does not apply for sitting players.

The bowling ramp can be used as an active fielder after the ball is delivered by rotating it within the bowler’s crease. The ramp replicates the fielders, white on either side (= no runs scored), and a red central section for catching players out (= -5 runs). If the ball contacts any part of the ramp that is not the red zone a dot ball is awarded. The ball can only be stopped within the marked crease, although the ramp can be moved outside this area. If the ball is stopped outside the crease then 6 runs is awarded to the batting side. If the ball is stopped by any part of the bowler’s hand then 6 runs is awarded. [please see supporting documents for more information on how to measure the bowling crease and for more explanation of this rule]

All green zones at the bowler’s end are now worth six runs Remember however, the bowler can now move the ramp and catch you out

Futsal

Age Group U12s (Year 7), U14s (Year 8 & 9) and U16s (Year 10 &11).

Gender Female

Equipment U12s will play with a size 3 ball and U14s & 16s will play with a full sized futsal ball (size 4).

Pathway Inter (Level 2) – County (Level 3) - Regional

Size of Team/Squad

Maximum 10 in a Squad.

Basic Overview Competition Format

Head height

There are no restrictions (apart from the ceiling of the sports hall!) as to how high the ball can be kicked in Futsal.

Rotating substitutions

Up to 10 players can be used in one match and there is no limit on how long a player must stay on or off the pitch. Players must enter and leave the field of play via the ‘substitution zone’ that is marked on the pitch in front of the team’s benches.

Kick-ins

In order to restart the game after a ball has gone out of play the ball is kicked back into play from the touchline and from corners. The ball must be placed stationary on the touchline and the feet of the player taking the kick-in must not cross the line.

The 4 second rule

For kick-ins, free kicks, goal clearances and corner kicks the player in possession of the ball has 4 seconds to restart play which the referee will count with their fingers in the air. If play isn’t restarted within four seconds an indirect free kick will be awarded to the opposing team. The goalkeeper is not allowed to control the ball for more than 4 seconds in his own half.

Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers are allowed to come out of and players are allowed to go into the penalty area. A goal clearance must be thrown out and the goalkeeper cannot touch the ball again until the goalkeeper is in the opponents half or a member of the opposition has touched the ball.

Accumulated fouls

Each team will be allowed to give away 3 direct free kicks in each half, then on the fourth foul a direct kick is awarded to the opposing team and the defending team is not allowed to position any players (other than the goal keeper) between the ball and the goal. The kick may be take from the 10m mark or, if the foul was committed closer to the goal than the 10m mark, then the kick may be taken from the position where the foul took place.

If a player is sent off then the team to which the player belongs must remain with 4 players until either two minutes have passed, or the opposition have scored a goal.

General Rules 1. All players, including goalkeepers, must wear shin-pads at all times

when on the pitch. 2. A player must not use equipment or wear anything that is

dangerous to himself or another player, including any kind of jewellery. Jewellery should be removed.

Players must wear appropriate flat-soled, non-marking footwear. (No boots are allowed) At local competitions, the time length of the matches may vary due to venue time restrictions. Duration of play and Timeouts

1. All players, including goalkeepers, must wear shin-pads at all times when on the pitch.

2. A player must not use equipment or wear anything that is dangerous to himself or another player, including any kind of jewellery. Jewellery should be removed.

Players must wear appropriate flat-soled, non-marking footwear. (No boots are allowed)

Basic Overview Competition Format

Teams consist of 7 players (six outfield plus one GK). Squads can consist of up to 14 players.

Players are interchangeable at any time during the game.

Only the GK is allowed in the ‘D’

Once a goal is scored, play restarts with the conceding team from the centre line

Contact is allowed.

Matches should be 10 minutes, straight through with a 5 minute break between matches.

Where more than one court are running; matches should be started at the same time but timed separately.

One referee is required on court that will also be responsible for scoring – This can be a teacher/leader or qualified handball referee

3 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 point for a loss.

In the event of a tie, winners should be decided on goal difference, goals scored and then on the result of matches between tied teams

Basic Overview Competition Format Boys and Girls compete separately. 4 Players make up a team. Players should be ranked in ability where Player 1 is the best and Player 4 is the weakest. The names of players should be handed in prior to the competition Players only play others with the same rank as themselves. Places will be based on the number of games won, if the number of games is a draw then revert to points to determine the winner.

Basic rules from the Schools Toolkit:

A game shall be won by the player first scoring 11 points (unless both players score 10 points when the game shall be won by the first player subsequently gaining a lead of 2 points). This can be adapted if there are time restrictions for the event e.g. no setting or reduce number of points played.

A match shall consist of a round robin competition, with all 4 players’ results counting. Games will be limited to 1 set due to time restrictions.

Serving – after every 2 points, the receiving player becomes the serving player.

A good service starts with the ball resting on the palm of the servers hand, the ball is thrown upwards, and on its way down the server strikes the ball so that it touches first his side of the table (court) and then his opponents side of the table (court).

A good return – the ball, having been served, should be struck so that it passes over the net (or around it) and touches the opposite side of the table (court).

A let – if in service the ball, in passing over the net, touches it and is otherwise good (ie goes over the net and hits the receivers side) it is a let and the service is taken again.

Basic Overview General Regulations

1. The clock shall be running accept for the last 2 minutes of the game. 2. The stopping clock rules will apply in the last 2 minutes of the game. 3. Man-to-man defence should be the only defence played. 4. A size 5 ball will be used in line with FIBA regulations for U12&U14 girls. 5. The will comprise of two 8 minutes halves. 6. A team is allowed one, one minute time out per half. 7. The team fouls penalty will apply after 4 fouls in each half. 8. There will be a 2 minute interval between each period. 9. Overtime (if required) will be two minutes using the stopping clock rules.

Simple Rules:

Game duration time can be adjusted to suit the number of games/facility availability. For example, play two periods of 10 minutes with a one-minute half time. First possession is decided by a jump ball.

A game will be started with a jump ball.

Either team may substitute a player whenever the ball is out of play.

Each team is permitted one time-out of one minute during each game.

At a change of possession e.g. foul, basket, ball out of play, play should restart from the nearest side/ end line or the top of the arc if playing half court.

Any player persistently fouling may be removed from the game by the referee. In the event of a foul the opposing team will receive the ball on the nearest side/ end line. If the player is fouled in the act of shooting one/ two free throws are rewarded; one if the basket is scored and two if the shot is missed. Each free throw is worth one point.

When a team scores, the other team gain possession of the ball on the end line or outside the arc if playing half a court.

Swearing/ abuse to other players/referees/coaches will result in the player being sent from the court and ruled ineligible to participate for the rest of the competition.

Scoring:

Points will be awarded at 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 for a loss.

When teams are tired on points the game played between the two teams will decide their placing in the league. If this does not produce a result the balance of baskets scored to baskets conceded will decide the result.

Basic Overview There will be two competitions – a pom dance and a stunt competition. Pom Dance Competition The competition will be a Pom Dance Competition and each team will be required to perform: • A chant or cheer before the routine • Followed by dance routine to music of your choice (this may encompass a variety of styles from Jazz, Funk, Pop, Hip-hop etc) - all squads must provide their own CD with backup, which must be clearly labelled. Compulsory Elements • 1 cheer or 1 chant and a dance routine with Cheer Arm Motions. • Poms must be used by participants at some point during the routine (optional for males). • Stunts, Pyramids, Tumbling and Acrobatics are prohibited. Acrobatics PROHIBITED: Forward or back rolls, handstands, cartwheels. Any move where the weight of the performer is on their hands and the hips rotate/come up straight over the head without the support of one or both feet. ALLOWED: Side rolls, back bends, modified hand-stand (hips are momentarily less than vertical with the shoulders), break dance moves such as "the worm", neck stand (candle). Stunting PROHIBITED: Any move where the body weight is supported by another person, without the performers foot/feet touching the ground. (i.e. Thigh stand, all lifts, leap frog etc). ALLOWED: Pulling the Cheerleader up from a sitting/crouching position on the ground. Assisted jumps, leaning on another Cheerleader with at least one foot on the ground. There is no limit on the number of participants and teams can be boys, girls or mixed teams. School entries however are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Stunt Competition This competition is open to schools that have experience of performing stunts in their cheerleading routines. Mats will be provided for schools to perform their routines. Clean indoor trainers may be worn on the mats. SCORING

Pom Dance Competition The team performance will be marked out of 80 points (up to 10 in each category) and will be awarded in the following areas: • Cheer/Chant/Sideline • Arm motions • Choreography • Jumps • Transitions • Timing and Synchronisation • Execution • Entertainment Value Stunt Competition Scoring will be out of 100 points, (up to 10 in each category) and will be awarded in the following areas: • Cheer/Chant/Sideline • Stunts • Pyramids • Jumps • Tumbling • Dance • Arm Motions • Formations • Expression • Transitions, speed • Timing & Synchronisation • Difficulty CLOTHING Schools do not have to wear specific uniform although teams are encouraged to all dress the same, whether this is in PE kit or similar sporting attire. Basic Overview Competition Format

Dodgeball has teams of six although schools can have squads up to eight. Matches to consist of 5 x 3 minute games (may vary depending on time available at local rounds).

The game starts with a signal from the referee. There are three dodge balls in the central “Dead Zone” and three members of each team have to race from opposing sides to pick them up first.

The balls are then passed to the back of the court before throwing commences.

A player is out if:

o They get hit by the ball (without it bouncing) on the body (inc. clothes), but not the head.

o An opposing player catches a thrown ball o They step into the “Dead Zone” o If they touch a boundary line or anything beyond it o A player tries to block a thrown ball with a ball in possession but that

ball is knocked out of their hands o If the referee says so (no form of arguing is allowed)

Players can use a ball in possession to block a thrown ball.

A player can return to the game if a team mate catches an opponent’s throw. Players return in the order they were knocked out.

If a player is out and gets brought back on, they have to enter from the back of the court, if not they are still out.

If someone gets hit but then the ball is caught by a different team member before it hits any other surface the person who gets hit stays in and the thrower stays in.

A game is won by knocking out all the opposition players or by having more players left at the end of the game.

The ball return line is halfway up each half.

Substitutions are allowed between games only.

SCORING The only scoring is to count the number of players left at the end of each game. This determines the winner. The team with the highest number of games at the end of 5 games wins the match.
