Our 2¢ What’s “poor” credit, and what does it look like? Poor credit, according to the banking industry, is someone with a credit score lower than 620. A person with poor credit has found themselves in a hole— sometimes by their poor choices, sometimes by life circumstances, sometimes by no fault of their own. The downsides are all too many— can’t get a home, can’t get a car, even employers may think twice about you after reviewing your credit. Making decisions based on a range of “acceptable” credit scores is an incredibly easy, productive and impersonal way to lend money: just plug a number into a computer, let it run a formula, and wait for it to spit out “yes” or “no.” Who’s next in line? Our employees treat every person that walks through our doors with the same level of attention and service, no matter their credit score. We believe that’s the right thing to do when someone’s life might depend on it. We don’t run computer formulas when we work with our members; we develop relationships with them. Our “formula” is getting to know a person’s character and their ability to repay. Those factors are much more important to us than a number. Within the past 12 months, Marine Credit Union has granted more than 6,000 loans to people with “poor” or no credit history—that’s 35% of all loans granted. We don’t call them credit risks; we don’t call them fair or poor; we call them the “underserved.” We believe in using our success to do good in our world. We do that by fulfilling a need few others can provide: responsible support from a financial institution that cares about its members—and their financial futures. We envision a world where more people are financially capable and in control of their lives. At Marine Credit Union, we have the capability—and the responsibility—to make that impact. Thank you to allmembers who

Union Foundation!

Within the last 12 months, Marine Credit Union has granted more than 6,000 loans to members ofour communities. Instead of turning members away due to less than perfect credit scores, we takethe time to learn the unique circumstances surrounding each member’s financial situation. We areable to grant more loans to deserving families and individuals by considering additional factors intoour decision making process. Individuals like Frank Marchese.

When Frank clicked the “Apply Now” button on the Marine Credit Union website, he expected tobe denied as he had been by several banks before. He desperately needed to pay off hisinsurmountable medical bills so that he could get back on track and move forward, but just couldnot find that help. That's where Marine Credit Union came in.

“Marine called me. I came into the branch on 35th Street. I told them I knew I was a long shot.” Butsomething very different than what he was used to happened. “The employees in the branch took thetime to listen to why I had the challenges that I did. Then they told me they would do whatever theycould to help me. They fought for me—and Cheryl approved my loan.” As someone who had beenpushed through the revolving doors of the big banks, Frank was treated with respect.

“What a relief it is—a breath of fresh air—to know that there are people and places out there likeMarine Credit Union that still exist. At no time did I feel judged or unimportant because I didn’thave the most money or best credit score. Marine went above and beyond for me.”
