Resort InformationThe first of the three valleys that make up the eponymous ‘Trois Vallees’ ski area, Courchevel is perhaps best known for the glitz and glamour of the highest of its four base resorts, 1850.

Many of the slopes this end of the Three Valleys, are north facing, so the snow is often the best in the area. With four resorts within the greater umbrella of Courchevel, there is something to appeal to everyone.

Getting thereThe most convenient airport is Chambéry which is just over an hour away, but you can also fly to Grenoble (1hr30mins), Geneva (1hr45mins) and Lyon (2hrs 30m). You can also take the high speed TGV train to Moutiers and a taxis or bus transfer up to the resort.

The new Eurostar train to the Alps also stops at Moutiers, making Courchevel and the rest of the Trois Vallees easier to enjoy than ever before.

Courchevel Le PrazGlamourous 1850 might be the best known of the four resorts within Courchevel, but the remaining three each bring something unique to the whole. The lowest of the four, Le Praz, or 1300 as it used to be known, is a charming French village with a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. The village is the site of the ski jump from the 1992 Olympics, which is still used today, and ongoing lift improvements mean that Le Praz is better connected than ever.

With a range of restaurants and shops, Courchevel Le Praz has plenty to recommend it despite the quieter nature of the village when compared to its’ louder, livelier cousin up in 1850. The Cave des Lys wine bar is a fantastic place to enjoy a drink and a meal, with an atmospheric setting.

Courchevel Village (1550)Courchevel Village, known as 1550, is the furthest out of the four Courchevel resorts. It’s the only one of them not easily linked with a direct road, with the gondola and chairlifts over to 1850 serving as the easiest ways to get there from the rest of Courchevel. This is a chalet style resort, done in the classic style.

The skiing in the immediate area has a good collection of beginner, intermediate and advanced slopes, and although it has access to the whole Three Valleys many visitors choose to stick to the skiing in the Courchevel area.

Courchevel Moriond (1650)Courchevel Moriond is more often known as 1650, and it is the last of the four resorts that make up Courchevel to have a large amount invested in improving the facades of the buildings. There are currently a number of new projects that will continue improving Moriond, from new developments to new lift infrastructure.

The new Aquamotion centre offers something more than your usual ski resort fare, with cafes as well as watersports available. The front de neige is pleasant, and has a selection of good restaurants. There are a number of excellent bars, restaurants and shops in the centre of the resort.

Courchevel 1850The largest and most famous of the resorts that make up Courchevel, 1850 is home to more glitz and glamour than the rest of the Trois Vallees put together. Its’ regular visitors include David and Victoria Beckham, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Chalets and apartments here rarely come available, especially if they boast a good location. Prices in 1850 are easily the highest of all four resorts in this valley, with five restaurants enjoying two Michelin star status and more five star hotels per square mile than anywhere else in France. 1850 is a place to be seen, so it has a good selection of high end shops, but for amenities it is better to go down to Moriond.

WinterAs a significant part of the largest fully linked ski area in the world, with access to 600km of ski slopes, Courchevel hardly lacks choice. When it comes to pistes, this area has enough for skiers of all levels. With the fearsome Couloirs providing challenges for expert skiers and boarders, there are long rolling blue runs that stretch miles down the quieter sections.

The terrain parks are well equipped, proving popular amongst teenage skiers, while the unparalleled mountain restaurants are perfect for relaxed skiers who are more interested in good food than tricky slopes. While there isn’t too much lift accessed off-piste, back-country and powder lovers can go heli-skiing or hire a guide.

With constant improvements to the area, including a dedication to improving resort infrastructure by replacing older lifts with the highest standard chairlifts and gondolas, the Trois Vallees is always a popular ski destination. This is aided by the orientation of the slopes, the high altitude ski area and the snow cannon coverage that together, gives the Trois Vallees one of the best snow records in the Alps.

SummerBetter known for winter sports than summer holidays, the Trois Vallees might not be the first place you think of when it comes to taking a trip in the warmer months. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t got plenty to offer those who do head that way.

There is a wealth of activities to enjoy during the summer in Courchevel, from the Aquamotion centre to the golf courses. Across the Trois Vallees area, summer visitors can enjoy hiking or hill walking, rock climbing, mountain biking and paragliding. The lift system opens in summer, making it easy to get to the highest slopes for paragliding and mountain biking.

Courchevel also has a nine hole golf course, with a putting green, driving range and training bunkers; there is a longer, more challenging course in Meribel, but the Courchevel course is perfect for recreational golfers to enjoy the scenery.

Expert’s OpinionAccording to our Trois Vallees expert, Fenella Hunter-

“When you say Courchevel, the first thing that comes to mind is the glitz and glamour of 1850. There’s far more to it than that though; from the traditional charm of Le Praz to the up-and-coming 1650, this more than any other resort, really does have something for everyone.”
