Tami Huber is a seniorthis year at Gooding HighSchoolandplansonattend-ingcollegenextyear.Sheisa firm believer in the Bible and an excellent student.Alongwithvolunteerexpe-rienceandtutoringyoungerstudents, Tami has been inthe Family Career Com-munityLeadersofAmerica,Reading club, and band &choir.Hergoalistoworkinthe education field and Girls Stategavehernewperspec-tivesaboutgovernment. KallieShadwickhasbeenstudent council presidentandsecretary,aswellas4Hsecretary and part of Fu-tureFamilyCareerLeadersof America. She has alsoworkedasaninternforthe
Wendell Boys Take State Soccer The Trojan Boys Soccer teamtooktheStateCham-pionshiponOctober25th. Their first game of the tournament was 5 to 0win over Bonners Ferry, followed by a hair-pulleragainstWeiser.Thatgameended in a 6 to 5 victoryfortheTrojans(4-3penaltykicks). Wendell scored first in the championship game whenBryant Alvarado scored against Sugar-Salem earlyin the first half. The rest of thegamewascloserighttothelastminute,whenacou-ple of penalty kicks gavetheTrojansa3to1victory,
Girls Soccer The Bliss girls lost their first game of the tourna-ment against Timberlake(took2ndplace), butwenton to defeat Marsh Valleyin over-time (2-1). Thisputthemintheconsolationgame against CommunitySchool where they endedtheir season with a 3-0loss.
Volleyball After a near perfect sea-son, the Lighthouse Chris-
tian girls took the 20141AD2 Volleyball Cham-pionship, but only afterbattling the Dietrich Blue Devils, not just once, buttwice in the tournament.A loss to Mackay put LHin the third place game.Mackay then lost againstDietrich sending Mackayto the third place gameas well. LH beat Mackaythe second time around anwent on to defeat Dietrichin the championship gameforcing them both into the

Application Deadline For NRCS Program The Idaho Natural Resources Conservation Servicehas set a November 21, 2014, application deadline forthe general Environmental Quality Incentives Programand special initiatives funded through that program. Tobe considered for fiscal year 2015 conservation program funding,agriculturaloperatorsmust submitapplicationsbeforeNovember21. “Weacceptapplications for theseprogramsonacon-tinuousbasishowever,onlytheapplicationsreceivedbyNovember 21st will be considered for funding this fiscal year,” said Ron Brooks, Idaho NRCS EQIP manager. Recently we passed the Halloweenday. Hopefully everyone wasn’t scared to
bits. Ihavebeenpackingsilage(choppedcornforlivestock).Thecornwearecuttinghasstocksovertwelvefeet tall. The corn field wraps around the pit I’m packing withabout220degrees.Onedoesnotknowwhatlurksinthecornorwillescape!Itislikeamoviewherethesuspensehas you at bay. Maybe the truck drivers exiting the cornwith loadsofsilageare theunknown?!Theunknownhasmesafe(ordoesit)atthemoment. With Halloween comes some of your favorite can-dies...mini-sized.Iusuallybuyabagofcandycornthistime of year (go figure, during corn season??). Mostofthetimethecandyisreallyfresh.IboughtabagofBrach’s brand candy corn. They were a little harder than Iexpected.So,asIwaslookingatthebackofthebag,Ireadtheingredients.Ofcourse,cornsyrupisoneofthemain ingredients -whatdoesn’thavecornsyrup thesedays(thatwillbeanotherstorybyitself). AsIreaddownfartherIfoundthebagsaid,“Productof Mexico.” That may explain why they were a littleharder.WhenIflippedthebagovertothefront,itsaid,“Brach*s - America’s Candy Maker.” Now wait a second! I realize Mexico is part of theAmericas (same as Canada), but when people say“Americans”theycointhepeopleoftheUnitedStates.Maybe I’m getting the Halloween scare? Maybe thecandycompany isgivingmefalseadvertising?Maybethecompanyisgoingonitspastreputation?Maybetheyareoutsourcingtoextremes?Maybe... Iseesimilarlabelinginallkindsofproducts-toonumer-ous to list. But, one example is Mountain Dew soda. Cur-rently they have Mountain Dew Kickback. Basically it is the original Mountain Dew with sugar instead of corn syrup.AretheyNOTtryingtoselltheMountainDewKickback?Thenamealonesuggestssodanotaccepted,inferiorprod-uct,orseconds,asonemaysay.Aretheysettingthesalesuptofailbecausetheydon’twanttochange?(probablynotdiscussion you’ll find at the kitchen table). WhetheritismadeinAmericaoritisbacktotheoriginalstateofsales,peopleshouldstopandsmelltheroses,orinthesecases,readthelabel. IthinktheAmericanpeopleshouldnotbeafraidtocomeout of the cornfield, so they know what’s what. ItwasevenmoresoberingasIpicturedmorecemeterieslikethisalloverWesternEuropeandintheUnitedStates.WewillneverknowthewisdomtheseVeteranscouldshare,but their sacrifice provides great perspective. Fortunately, weareblessedtohavemanyVeteransstillwithustodaywhocanshare theirexperienceandwisdom, ifonlywewillheedtheirwords. IamoneofthefortunateAmericans.Iamfortunatetohave had the opportunity to live overseas in Japan andEurope, to visit other cultures and see many battlefields. Myfamilyhashadstrangersapproachus,thankingusforwhat Americans sacrificed to save their country. I have seen bunkers and bombed buildings left untouched inthe Belgian countryside as a reminder of what happened. WWIIisstillveryfreshinthemindofthoseinEurope.LikewiseinJapan,Ihadaglimpseofthelongtermeffectsof nuclear radiation, watching the Fukashima Reactormeltdown and the aftermath. I thought about the difficult decisionPresidentHarryTruman,aVeteranandPresidentintheWhiteHouse,hadtomakeregardingtheapprovaltobombHiroshimaandNagasaki.IhadtheseexperiencesbecauseIamfortunatetolivewithaVeteran. IamalsofortunatetohavealonglineageofVeteransinmy family.Fourofmygreat- grandfathers fought inWWIIandKorea,mygrandfathers inVietnam,andmyfather,whoisstillintheUSNavy,throughtheendoftheColdWarandongoingGlobalWaronTerrorism.Igettoheartheirstoriesofmistakesandvictories,theiropinionsof past and current American policies and actions, andtheiradviceondecisions Imake.Theirwisdomisdeepandcomesfromtheexperiencestheyhad,thelessonstheylearnedandthepeoplethattouchedtheirlives. IwritetosharetheimportanceofVeteransbecausemostAmericanshavenothadtheopportunityortheconnection

They have seen people of other nations yearn for this freedom. They servedorstillservebecausetheybelieveinpreservingandde-fendingthatfreedom.Veteransdefendournationsowewillhaveafuture.Theyhavelivedthroughourhistoryandcanpreventusfromrepeatingpastmistakes,makingpoor short term decisions, with grave consequences, and guideusinfutureenduringchoices. Com-missioner Backstrom was not present as he had prior commitments. The Board discussed a request from the Chamber of Commerce to help support the Fourth of July fireworks display. Commissioner Croner made a motion to approve a contribution of $250.00, Sec-ondedbyCommissionerMcMurdo.Unanimous. The Board discussed the amended Work Order and Agreement on the 500 East Road Bridge Replacement and the Mormon Road Bridge Replacement Main Channel & Overflow Projects. Forsgren hasmadecostadjustmentsfromtheoriginalworkorderwhichlow-ersthecosts.CommissionerCronermadeamotiontoapproveandsigntheWorkOrderandAgreementswithForsgrenAssociates.Sec-ondedbyCommissionerMcMurdo.Unanimous.
