They trace their roots to the Italian immigrants who came over and settled in California. The oldest wineries in Califor- nia are all started by Italian immigrants. They were the true beginnings of the Cali- fornia grape and wine production, some dating before prohibition,” said Scott Tar- water a show organizer. Each day’s event has a food component, with a strong Italian style. To take the culi- nary element a step further, much of the produce and dairy comes from New Jer- sey. And there is music, to boot. And a fash- ion show on Sunday. “The festival strokes all the senses,” Tarwater said. “This should be well attend- ed. Ticket prices are ridiculously low for what you get.” » Aug. 17: Wine & Jazz Reception, from 8 to10 p.m. at the H20 Pool Bar. Live jazz and wines from more than 30 wineries complemented by chef-inspired cuisine. Participating wineries include: Levendi, Cosentino, Ferrari Carano, Rob- ert Mondavi, Francis Ford Coppola, Trinchero, Flora Springs, Andretti and more. All of the wineries will have repre- sentatives. » Aug. 18: Grand Tasting from 7 to 10 p.m. in The Grand. Sample more than 120 wines from 40 of California and Italy's most prestigious producers. Enjoy an evening of live jazz and culinary delights, while sampling some of the best Brunellos, Chiantis, Char- donnays, Barolos, Barbarescos and more. » Aug. 19: Sparkling Brunch & Fashion Show from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in The Grand. The event features an Italian-style, sit- down brunch with Prosecco on the table for guests to self pour. The brunch in- cludes a lively high-end fashion show, with evening gowns and cocktail dresses from New Jersey designer Elizabeth Delgado, who will be in attendance. “She’s won quite a few awards. She’s making a name for herself. What’s of inter- est is she will do fittings right there. If someone in the audience loves an item af- ter the event, she will do the fitting. She’ll make a custom made dress to your body,” said Tartwater. Golden Nugget hired 18 professional runway models who will walk the runway to choreographed music. “It will be like New York fashion week, it’s that kind of quality,” Tartwater said. “We hope this will be an annual event like the beer festival,” he said. Hoping the young and the tech savvy willembrace Atlantic City casinos, some Borgatafolks turn to a humorous viral video to drawthis segment who rebuff traditional advertis-ing.

In the “Meet theCasinoVirgins”video,BillyScafuri asks the hotel desk clerk, “Does the ca-sino have a volume knob?”

In another scene, Scafuri’s partner in com-edy,AdamLustick, asks if he can bring his ownplaying cards.

Theexchangeshaveavery “Hangover” feelto it,withLustickandScafuribothplayingcasi-no virgin Zach Galifianakis.

The brief interchange introduces the twocomedy sketch partners who star in a pair ofshort funnyvideosdesigned topitchBorgata toa younger, more tech-oriented audience.

“In the last fewyears, the Internet boomhasbeen a keen way to advertise subversivelywithout advertising. It’s a cool thing. You hideads in viral videos. The Internet audience is ad-verse to heavy advertizing,” Lustick said.

Thevideosarechock full ofwittycommentsfromacomedyteamthatalso ispartof theHar-vard Sailing Team sketch comedy group. Thetitle — “Casino Virgins” — implies the two co-medians are clueless when confronted with acasino resort atmosphere.

The comedy duo formed seven years agowith no connection to Harvard but with a con-nection between Lustick, who graduated NYUand Scafuri, a Hofstra guy.

“Borgata was looking for viral comedyvideos, not commercials,” Scafuri said. Aftermeeting with Borgata public relations people,Liza Costandino and Brian Brennan, they wentto work.

“We jotted down a lot more jokes then weendedupshooting,”Lusticksaid. “WhentouredwithLizaandBrian, wewereable toplace jokesalready written into dynamic locations.”

The videos took nine hours to shoot in a sin-gle day, said Scafuri, who grewup inVoorhees-ville, a sleepy town outside Albany, in upstateNew York. The goal was two videos, but therewas so much material, they created three, hesaid. Itwas a stree-free shoot, Scafuri said, andone that may lead to something on a granderscale.

“Borgata deserves credit for being artist-friendly and supportive,” he said.

Lustick studied theater at NYU. “I had asketch comedy class, which was good experi-ence. Billy was entrenched at the Upright Citi-zens Brigade and interning at SNL.”

The guysmoved to LosAngeles about seven

months ago. “We are now in a constantstate of writing various projects,” Lus-tick said. “Weare focusingona lot of con-tent for online and TV. But naturally, wehave an eye on film.”

Eugene Hütz never considered an al-ternative to music as a lifestyle and ca-reer.He skipped school in his nativeKiev,in the Ukraine, to concentrate on guitar, drums and writing music.

“School and work never made anysense tome,”Hütz said. “It never enteredmy mind to do something other than mu-sic. I believe this is what I was simply puton the earth to do. There was an extremeurge to follow my impulse and intuition.”

That intuition led to the formation ofGogol Bordello, a band Hütz calls Gypsypunkrock, withan infusionofLatin,Medi-terranean, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll. Theeclectic band plays theHouse of Blues to-morrow night. The other seven membersincludeSergeyRyabtsev;YuriLemeshev;Thomas Gobena; Michael Ward; OliverCharles; Elizabeth Sun and Pedro Erazo.

“The show’s gonna . . . rock. Rock ‘n’roll ingeneralmeansmusicofvitality.Lit-tle Richard and Chuck Berry are still vi-brant. Rolling Stones, too. Our bandcomes from that tradition, a powerful en-ergetic vitality,” Hütz said.

Nikolai Gogol was a crucially impor-

tant Russian writer who wrote graphicfolklore in an avant-garde way. He creat-ed a newgenre. “This is somethingwe aregoing to do with our own brand of rock ‘n’roll,” he said.

The group has proven a success in artcircles in New York. Initially they per-formed in galleries rather than clubs,Hütz said.

“That is why even to this day you see alot of traces of performance art in ourshow, mostly situational, of course. As Isaid before, Gogol Bordello is amulti-lay-ered animal. Gypsy punk music. Rock ‘n’roll.Performanceart.Naturalenergy,”hesaid.

Such different approaches have at-tracted not one, but five documentariesabout Gogol Bordello, none initiated bythe band.

Hütz and his band mates experiencelife in the here and now. “I’m not living inthepastor thefuturebut in thenow. That’swhat thegypsypunkevolution isall about. What colors our music more than any-thing is the natural joy of being. A lot ofpeople lose touch with that when they en-ter the real life realm.”

And if he wasn’t in Gogol Bordello?“I’d be amusician in a different band,”

Hütz said.

TaKe-On Productions andMSG Sportsannounced the return of full-rules Thaikickboxing toAtlanticCitywith “Battle atBally’s II,” a professional and amateurMuay Thai event set to take place Sundayin the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s AtlanticCity.

Sanctioned by the New Jersey StateAthletic Control Board, this event willfeature a fight card that includes today’sbest professional and amateurMuayThaifighters, competing under rules which al-low for forceful knee and elbow strikes.

“ ‘Battle of Bally’s II’ provides guestswith a level of excitement and high-oc-tane energy rarely seen in this region,”said Kevin Ortzman, senior vice presi-dent and general manager for Bally’s andShowboat Atlantic City. “Muay Thai kick-boxing, in itself, treats audiences to com-petitors that consistently give all-out,tour-de-force performances, so the factthat we have an exhibition taking place ina venue as intimate as the Bally’s GrandBallroom, makes this a truly covetedticket.”

Themain eventwill be the rematch be-tween Gabriel Varga and Philadelphia’sJustin Greskiewicz. At the time of theirfirst bout, Varga had only a handful of profights under his belt and surprised themore experienced Greskiewicz with animpressive win.

If ever a performer and role belongedtogether, it’s Dominique Scott and Drew,in “Rock of Ages.”

“I truly believe that it doesn't get bet-ter — at least for me and where I'm at inmy life right now,” Scott said in an inter-view before the show opens an extendedrun at Caesars Atlantic City. “This rolewasaperfect culminationofmyskill sets.

“It is also one of the hardest roles,’’ hecontinued. “A lot of people can’t do this. Ihave extensive vocal background,” saidthe 24 year-old Miami native.

The film version, with TomCruise andwith Diego Boneta, as Drew, opened thissummer. Don’t expect the film to influ-ence what Scott does. “I saw it after I did200 shows. But it is eye-opening to seesomeoneelseplaya roleyouknowsowell. The movie is different from the show, even though the plot line is still there.”

Being in entertainment was preor-dained. “It’s not a choice for a lot of peo-ple. It’s a career that chooses you,” saidScott, a performer since age 6. He per-formed professionally at 10.

“I was always a clown. I needed a lot ofattention,” said Scott, whose father wasFrench and worked in the consulate. Hewent to a French school growing up.

But Miami was not the place to be formusicals. He attended Syracuse Univer-sity because of its theater program. After

college, Scottmoved toNewYorkwithhisband Domin8trx trying to get as manygigs as possible. “I was also auditioninglike crazy and worked at a restauranteight hours a day.”

He scored roles in “Miss Saigon,” “Je-sus Christ Superstar” and “Will RogersFollies.”

Scott auditioned for “Rock of Ages”and got cut. “ . . . I knew the role was tooperfect for me not to even be considered,so I went home and made a video. I sentthe video to the casting director, and acouple weeks later I got a call to come infor the final day of callbacks — and Ibooked the show.”

Despite his grueling schedule in “RockofAges,” Scott continues to plug his band.“At first, my band mates were bummedabout ‘Rock of Ages.’ ”

But as a rock band, he’d be lucky toplay before 100 people. “It was usually 20to 40.Now, I performbefore 2,000 a night.And it’s similar towhat I dowithmyband.

The exposure is great.”Scott’s girlfriend plays Sherrie in the

While most massages are solitary af-fairs, a couple’smassage adds an elementof camaraderie.

“A lot of women want a massage withtheir partner. It gives them some time to-gether,” said Gina Rosenberger, whoowns Vive Day Spa & Salon at Showboat.

Until Aug. 15, the spa is offering a 50-minutePureRelaxationSwedishmassagefor couples for just $199. Spendquiet timetogether while relieving stress.

The term day spa does not often applyto those spas within resorts or destina-tions. But at Showboat, the spa trades onthat name, while still catering to hotelguests.

“Wehavehadtonsofrepeatbusiness inthefouryearswe’vebeenhere,” saidown-er Gina Rosenberger.

Vive Day Spa has separate male andfemale locker rooms, with steams, saunasand showers. They also have Himalayansalt and rain showers, good for ex-folia-tion of the body.

In addition to the special on couple’smassages,anotherfocusofsummertreat-ments is an orange and grapefruit facialusing the renowned Sothys product.

Rosenberg opened the spa with theeconomy in tatters, and has grown be-tween 10 and 30 percent a month. In part, she credits the stress people are under inthe economic downtimes for such suc-cess.

“People want great customer serviceand amazing treatments. We deliver onboth accounts,” Rosenberger said. “It’sbeen great to be a part of the Caesars En-tertainment properties.”

Vive Day Spa customers often guestsfrom Showboat but also hair clients fromRevel, which does not offer that service.Sheraton andCourtyardMarriot inAtlan-tic City also send their guests to Vive forspa treatments. Vive does in-room mas-sages at Sheraton, and also in-suite atShowboat.

Massages are the most popular treat-ment, with Swedish or the hot stone themost sought after. Then there’s the hotand cold stone together. The heat warmsup the muscles, which is followed withcold marble stone on ice.

“It helps alleviate tension and swell-ing,” Rosenberger said.

For its 10th anniversary, the “Thunder Over theBoardwalk” air show moved from a Wednesday to aFriday. The change wasn’t made to draw more of acrowd—800,000peoplealreadyshowupfor thespec-tacular display.

Instead, the move was made to accommodate theU.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the headlining act. Butthe weekend date— the showwill take off Aug. 17—will likely boost the size of the beach crowd, as willtheaddedsandpumped inbytheArmyCorpsofEngi-neers this summer.

“This is the largest beachfront weekend air showin North America and among the top five overall inthe country based on the number of people,” saidDa-vid Schultz, president of David Schultz AirshowsLLC, which stages “Thunder over the Boardwalk.”“This is a perfect venue and it’s free.”

makes for up-close viewing. “We do notclose the ocean off from spectators. Youcan float and watch the show from the wa-ter.”

Schultz expects more than 460 boatsand pleasure craft in the water. “You’ll beable to walk from boat to boat between thecity of Ventnor and Steel Pier without get-ting your feet wet,” he said of the close-packed flotilla.

Tech Sgt. Harold Roger Brown earneda distinction while serving in the U.S. 5thArmy’s 92nd Infantry Division duringWorld War II. He became the first Atlan-tic City African American to die in com-bat.

Brown’s division consisted of AfricanAmericans from across the country, andbecameknownasBuffaloSoldiers, amon-iker first given by Native Americans to a19th-century African-American cavalryunit.

To honor Brown, the second annual At-lantic City Salutes America’s ArmedForces Parade will feature a riderlesshorse with one boot in its stirrup. Thehorse will lead the Aug. 15 parade with abanner that honors Brown, said longtimetalk-show host Pinky Kravitz, who cameup with the idea for the march last year.

The parade, which is part of a weekthat culminatesAug.17with the “10thAn-nual Thunder Over the Boardwalk” airshow, honors the sacrifice and dedicationofservicemembers throughout theyears.A dozen Casino Reinvestment Develop-ment Authority Ambassadors will followthe parade procession line on bicycles.

Last year, 120 units participated. As ofAug. 1, more than 140 have signed on forthis year, including 30 musical groups,Kravitz said. Also on board for the 2.3-mile walk are 17 floats, military and civic

leaders, and several veterans groups.“It’s absolutely phenomenal,” Kravitz

said of the response. “But that’s not a sur-prise.”

A year ago, it drizzled part of the timeand most of the crowds, estimated at100,000, remained, he said.

“It was something very special. After-ward we heard from people who said wewant to be part of it. This is a way to payhomage to those in the armed forces,”Kravitz said.

Eagles standouts Michael Vick andLeSean McCoy will be on hand at thefirst Fantasy Football Fest, held at theAtlanticCityConventionCenterAug.18and 19.

“It’s a lucky break for us,” saidGregTopalian, senior vice president forReed Exhibitions, which produces theshow.

Vick and McCoy will join a stellarcollection of players — most of whomare retired — to participate in a week-end of football experiences on the cuspof the 2012 season. Among the an-nounced stars: JoeMontana, JimKelly,Phil Simms, Brian Dawkins, MatthewBerry, Joe Theismann, Bruce Smith,Tony Dorsett, Chris Doleman, Tony Si-ragusa, Lawrence Taylor and Ottis An-derson.

“We are aiming to make the inaugu-ral Fantasy Football Fest a unique op-portunity for fans.Thehigh-profile ath-letes participating in panels and auto-graph signings are just two of the wayswe have been able to do this,” Topaliansaid.

Whilemuchof theexpocaters to fan-tasy football players, the overall vibeappeals to even the casual sports fan.

“Depending on your level or lack ofinterest there’s a lot to do,” Topaliansaid.

Hard-core fantasy football fans willsalivate. “They can hold their owndrafts there. There will be incredibleinsights with a dozen fantasy expertsbreaking down players by position andsleeper picks. How cool is that.”

The fan who is not into fantasy foot-ball can buy memorabilia and othermerchandise or grab an autograph.Kids and others can stop by the interac-tive zone, kick a field goal and try theirpassing accuracy. Outside there’ll be abeer-tasting area with great craftbeers.

ReedPOP, the part of Reed Exhibi-

tions responsible for New York Comic-Con, Chicago Comic & EntertainmentExpo and Penny Arcade Expo, saw anopportunity for not only an under-served segment of the market — fanta-sy football—but inanewcommunityaswell.

Atlantic City offers a lot of advan-tages, Topalian said. It’s in the Easterncorridor. It’snotPhiladelphiawhere theEagles dominate. It’s not New York, where the Jets and Giants rule.

“It’s also a great destination to getaway to,” said Topalian, who countsCaesars Entertainment as one of thekey casino sponsors. And there’s a hugepopulation base between New York toWashington.”

Pre-sales havebeen strong,Topaliansaid.

“Our goal is 20,000-plus, which isoutrageous, incredibly busy,” he said.
