    Introduction

    It is now commonplace to begin any thinking about the “modern” by marking itscapaciousness; by announcing that we are helpless around its multiple and changingsignifcations. In some constitutive sense, perhaps, we are all modern, whether it is adisposition and/or characteristic o the individuals. iven that, is it best to approach the“modern” as a normative ideal or as a historical phenomenon! "r, is it a certainconfguration o the institutional order! #hese are $uestions on which it is di%cult to takee&plicit positions.
