VIII. *Civil Engineering 1. Definition: the practical application of theoretical sciences, such as

physics or chemistry, for the benefit of mankind (most simple but not defining).

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the construction and design of public and private sector works such as bridges, roads, dams and buildings.


Course Introduction 2. *Civil engineering vs. military engineering

Civil engineering: dealing with permanent structure for civilian use ； the design and construction of objects that are intended to be stationary, including buildings and houses, dams, tunnels, bridges, canals, station systems and stationary parts of transportation system—highways, airports, port facilities, and roadbeds for railroad.

Military engineering: dealing with temporary structures for military use

Structural engineering: dealing with permanent structures

Hydraulic engineering: concerned with systems involving the flow and control of water or other fluids

Sanitary or environmental engineering: involving the study of the water supply, purification, sewer systems, and the like
