Fairbanks received a hugefacelift on May 7th!

Over 14 tons of trash was picked up byvolunteers across the borough inanticipation of summer and touristseason!

Each year, Clean-Up Day is organized by the Midnight SunCouncil Boy Scouts, United Way of the Tanana Valley, DOT andAdopt a Highway, Green Star of Alaska, Pioneer Park, and TheGreater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce.

Special thanks to Hallee who volunteered during Council officehours to hand out thousands of bags and to Jess who held downthe membership table during the Trash Bash Thank You Party atPioneer Park.

Thousands of people are involved in Clean-Up Day, but I'd like tohighlight one special group of volunteers this year.

Our Heavy Haulers donate people, time, equipment and gas todriving around and picking up the bags left on the side of theroad. This group includes: Amerigas, A & A Roofing, Alaska Waste,CCI Alliance, Cowles Heating, City of Fairbanks PublicWorks, Floorcraft Carpet One, Frontier Supply Company,Horst Expediting and Remote Operations, MacCheyne'sCarpets Plus, and Karl Gohlke from Mechanical Contractorsof Fairbanks for coordinating the Heavy Hauler group!

These guys have a dirty job, and they do it with a smile ontheir face! We are so very grateful for them!

Wood Badge

Is Wood Badge a stress-free vacation?No.

But for a vacation that tests your limits, gives meaning to yourtime spent in Scouting and makes your job as a leader easier, just say yes to Scouting's preeminent training course for adults.

Your deluxe six-day, all-inclusive Wood Badge experiencecomes with decades of Scouting knowledge, a skilled and helpfulstaff and a guided tour through the entire Scouting program fromTiger Cubs to Venturing and Sea Scouts. And the price? Lessthan a single night costs at that fancy resort with the pool.

Wood Badge is expertly designed to stress you out, tie you inknots and take you on the same emotional roller coaster we putour Scouts on as they advance in the program. In other words, you might not leave Wood Badge feeling relaxed, but you're guaranteed to be recharged and ready to tackle anyproblem your Scouts throw your way. And it just might be themost fun you'll ever have as a Scout leader.

WHO SHOULD GO? : BSA wants every registered adult toattend Wood Badge within 2 years of registering. This includesvolunteers at all levels and areas of the program. Cub Scout, BoyScout, Varsity Scout, Sea Scout, and Venturing adult leaders.District and Council level volunteers and employees. Youngadults 18 and older in the Venturing and Sea Scout programsmay also participate. A Wood Badge course is more effective witha diverse group of staff and students!

WHEN IS IT?: Midnight Sun Council has tentatively scheduledits course for May 28 through June 3 of 2017.

WHERE IS IT?: Lost Lake Scout Camp outside of Fairbanks,Alaska

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? : The price will be set tentativelyat $350. This will cover all meals, recognition items, and coursematerials.

Fundraising will be taking place to provide some partialscholarship opportunities. We also encourage units to providepartial scholarships for their volunteers as well, the return on theinvestment will be obvious and immediate after the completion ofthe week-long portion of the course! A payment schedule will bereleased before the end of October 2016.

The Circle of Youth AdultTraining

Pat Demeritt, our new Tanana ValleyDistrict Committee Leader for Training, and I attended a Course DirectorsConference recently at Camp La-No-Che Florida for National YouthLeadership Training.

One of the most significant thoughts that we took away from theevent is the importance of the cycle of youth and adult leadershiptraining. The two are connected, intertwined, and critical for themutual success of our youth and adults. Both Pat and I are nowcommitted to changing the culture of our council because althoughthe vast majority of our youth and adults in the Midnight SunCouncil are being exposed to some degree of leadership training,it is typically only what is required and advanced training is notvalued. Think of a circle and place untrained youth and adults on oppositesides. The leadership training that is required is the starting pointfor both groups that moves them clockwise around the circle. Ifno advanced leadership training occurs, then progress around thecircle stops. New youth and adults to the circle must also betrained, but there are often times no highly trained leadersavailable in our council to instruct them to their potential. This isthe situation our council now constantly struggles with.

Page 7: Course Kodiak Challenge · A big thank you to the LDS Wards and Scouting units that came out this past weekend to work in camp, especially on the holiday weekend! Click on the link

Now imagine that instead our youth and adults choose to continuearound the circle by electing to take the advanced leadershiptraining courses that are readily available or soon will be. Thecircle becomes complete. Our older youth are then highlyqualified, knowledgeable, and skilled to help instruct new adultsto be fantastic unit leaders. And conversely our adults becomeequally adept to launch new youth on the most amazing Scoutexperience imaginable. This is the council we dream of. This isthe council we want. We can now 'See it' so we can now 'Be it'. Pat and I look forward to visiting with units to further explain theimmediate advantages, advanced leadership training can bringand to introduce the training that is available. Remember, even in the Land of the Midnight Sun, a new dawnwill eventually rise. Thank you,Jeffrey A. RogersVice Chair of ProgramTanana Valley DistrictMidnight Sun CouncilBoy Scouts of America.
