ACE IT Programs • Langley School District offers the following Ace It

programs • Professional Cook 1(new) at WGSS – 1 year • Hairdressing at ACSS -2 semester program • Carpentry at ACSS- 1 semester program • Automotive Technician at ACSS -1 semester • Piping/Plumbing at LSS-2 semesters • Electrical at DW Poppy-1 semester • Horticulture at KPU

ACE IT Programs • All programs except Professional Cook 1

commence second semester of each school year • Lunchtime Information Session • Feb. 17 in the Career Centre (Parents welcome

to attend) • Application packages are available in the

Counselling and Career Centre. Please see a Ms Mallinson, Ms Wolgram if you are interested.

• Applications must be returned to the Counselling Centre by April 4th.

SECONDARY SCHOOL APPRENTICE

• Students work with a qualified Red Seal journeyperson to gain skills, work experience

• Students can earn up to 16 credits toward graduation

• Students may be eligible for a Ministry of Education Scholarship with a C+ average

Work Experience • We offer Work Experience 11 and 12 • Students will work with a teacher to gain job

preparation skills, resume building etc • Work experience can be paid or unpaid • We are always looking for businesses who would

be willing to sponsor students • INFORMATION SESSION Will be held in late

Distributed Learning

• Are courses taken outside of the student’s home school (DW Poppy)

• Courses can be taken on line or at Continuing Education Centres (Langley Education Centre)

• Courses with Provincial Exams: students register for the exam at their home school

Distributed Learning • Students cannot be registered in the same 2

courses. One at their home school and in a DL program

• Students should check with their counsellor before registering for a DL course

• Grade 12 students MUST check with each post secondary school they intend to apply to as post secondary schools will have different policies about using a DL course for Admissions

Post Secondary Courses • Langley and Kwantlen Polytechnic have a

program called XCEL • Students in Grade 12 can apply to take one or

two courses at the KPU Langley campus • Requirements B in En 11, SS 11 and Math or Sc 11 • Information Session Feb 15th at lunch in the

Career Center(parents welcome) • Application packages are available in the

Counselling Centre. Due April 4th.

Post secondary Information

• In BC we have TRADITIONAL POST SECONDARY SCHOOLS:

• UBC, UVIC AND SFU • These schools have specific

requirements for admissions to all programs

• ONLY ONE DOOR for Admissions

Comprehensive School • UFV, KPU, VIU,TRU, UNBC • These schools have two doors for entrance

• Degree Programs that have specific

requirements and GPAs

• Other programs that are similar to College Entrance • Apprenticeship Programs • Certificate Programs • Diploma Programs

Colleges

• Douglas College, Langara College, Camosun College, Okanagon College…

• These schools have : • Apprenticeship programs • Certificate programs • Diploma programs • Degree programs

Where Do I Go? • It is possible to start at one school and then

apply to another. • Some post secondary schools have agreements

such as the SFU/Douglas Agreement. If accepted one can take courses at either campus.

• Many students may decide to start at a comprehensive school then apply to a larger, traditional school.

• For some students the large traditional school is perfect.

Where Do I Go? • Some students like to stay home and attend a

local post secondary, others look forward to the opportunity to move away and spread their wings.

• Some schools have unique opportunities • Langara has an agreement with Sussex

University for students who would like to study Law. Two year at Langara + 3 years in Sussex.

• SFU has several programs with overseas universities connections?

Which School is Best?

• There is no best school.

• Check out the SFU booklet: “All universities and colleges are good”

• Finding the best fit is the biggest challenge.

GPA? • Your GPA or Admission Average is the average of

the required courses for the program to which you are applying.

• English 12 is always part of your GPA

• It is important that students check the websites of the post secondary schools.

• Each school can and will have different requirements for Admissions.

Entrance Averages

Entrance Averages vary at post secondary schools. UBC, SFU and UVIC tend to have higher Entrance Averages than the Comprehensive schools.

Examples of some entrance averages: Sciences 90% (UBC, SFU) Engineering 90% (most Engineering Programs. Arts 80-85% Nursing 90% +

Other Entrance Requirements

• Some post secondary schools and some programs within a post secondary will require students to submit Supplemental Applications.

• A Supplemental Application may be in the form of a “Personal Profile” (UBC) or a Broad Based Supplemental (SFU and UVIC) or an online interview (UBC Commerce)

• Always check websites for more information

Are Gr 11 courses important?

• Grade 11 course grades may not be required for Admissions but…

• When it is time to SELF REPORT GRADES a student may have to report a grade 11 course mark.

• Some post secondary schools are looking at grade 11 marks .

• So, Grade 11 courses and grades ARE IMPORTANT.

Other ? • Big Buddy Program: For those students

interested in Becoming a Big Buddy with a student at North Otter or Peterson Road Elementary pay attention to the Student Bulletin. There will be an information meeting in April.

• Encounters with Canada: This is an opportunity to travel to Ottawa to learn more about Canada. Pay attention to the Bulleting as there will be a meeting in April.
