COURSE DESCRITPION
SPANISH 5-6 IS A THIRD YEAR SPANISH COURSE THAT WILL BE CONDUCTED ALMOST ENTIRELY IN SPANISH. IN ADDITION TO REVIEW AND MASTERY OF 1ST AND 2ND YEAR SPANISH, 3RD YEAR STUDENTS WILL WORK TOWARDS INCREASING THEIR VOCABULARY, UNDERSTANDING MUCH OF WHAT IS SAID AND BEGIN TO INITIATE CONVERSATIONS, RECOGNIZE INDICATIVE, IMPERATIVE, AND SUBJUNCTIVE FORMS, WRITE SHORT ESSAYS, READ AND COMPREHEND POEMS, SHORT STORIES, NEWS ARTICLES, ETC.
GOALS AND STANDARDSGOALS AND STANDARDS: STUDENTS WILL PRACTICE SPEAKING, READING, WRITING, LISTENING AND CULTURAL
AWARENESS OF SPANISH IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE COMPETENCY IN THE FOLLOWING STANDARDS TAKEN FROM THE WORLD LANGUAGE CONTENT STANDARDS FOR CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
• CONTENT: STUDENTS USE THE LANGUAGE TO PARTICIPATE IN EVERYDAY SOCIAL INTERACTIONS.
• COMMUNICATION: STUDENTS ACTIVELY USE LANGUAGE TO TRANSMIT MEANING WHILE RESPONDING TO REAL SITUATIONS.
• CULTURES: STUDENTS COMPREHEND THE IDEAS, ATTITUDES, AND VALUES THAT SHAPE THE TARGET CULTURE.
• STRUCTURES: STUDENTS GRASP THE ASSOCIATED CONCEPTS, AND COMPREHEND THE STRUCTURES THE LANGUAGE USES TO CONVEY MEANING.
• SETTINGS: STUDENTS CARRY OUT TASKS IN STAGE AND AGE APPROPRIATE SITUATIONS THAT REFLECT THE TARGET CULTURE.

RULES AND CITIZENSHIP
• FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL RULES, (SEE STUDENT HANDBOOK), AND CLASSROOM RULES. EACH INFRACTION WILL RESULT IN A CONSEQUENCE FROM THE “HENRY FOUR STEP ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE PLAN”.
CLASS RULES1. NO TALKING IS ALLOWED AFTER THE BELL. STUDENTS MAY ONLY TALK IF THEY ARE
CALLED UPON BY THE TEACHER OR INSTRUCTED TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ACTIVITY.
2. NO HATS/HOODS/HEAD COVERINGS. HATS WILL BE CONFISCATED AND HELD UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY.
3. NO PERSONAL GROOMING. THIS INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, HAIR, MAKEUP, NAILS, CLOTHING ALTERATIONS, APPLYING LOTIONS, PERFUMES, COLOGNES, ETC. 4. NO FOOD OR DRINK CONSUMPTION. ONLY WATER IN A CLOSED CONTAINER IS ALLOWED.
5. NO FOUL LANGUAGE. THIS INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO NAME-CALLING, PROFANITY, AND BULLYING.
6. BE IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT AND READY TO LEARN, (MATERIALS OUT AND READY), WHEN THE BELL RINGS. REMAIN IN YOUR SEAT FOR THE ENTIRE PERIOD UNLESS GIVEN PERMISSION/DIRECTIONS TO LEAVE YOUR SEAT.

DETENTION • DETENTIONS WILL BE ASSIGNED TO ANY STUDENT WHO VIOLATES A SCHOOL
OR CLASS RULE, (STARTING AFTER ONE WARNING, (STEP ONE OF THE H4SADP) WHILE IN MY CLASSROOM. DETENTIONS ARE HELD IN ROOM 119 EVERY THURSDAY FROM 2:20-3:20.
• DETENTIONS ARE MANDATORY AND WILL NOT BE EXCUSED FOR SPORTS/CLUBS/JOBS/EXTRACURRICULAR ENGAGEMENTS ETC. STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO ATTEND THEIR MANDATORY ASSIGNED DETENTION CAN EXPECT TO HAVE THEIR PARENTS CALLED, A REFERRAL WRITTEN, AND A STUDENT/TEACHER/PARENT MEETING ARRANGED.
GRADING SCALE STUDENTS EARN GRADES IN MY CLASS ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING PERCENTAGES:
A – 90-100% B – 80-89% C – 70-79% D – 60-69% F – 0-59%
EXAMPLE: IF THE SEMESTER ENDS WITH A TOTAL OF 840 POINTS POSSIBLE AND A STUDENT EARNS 744 POINTS ON TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS, THE GRADE WILL BE A B+. THE STUDENT EARNED 89 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE. A STUDENT EARNING 480 POINTS WOULD FAIL THE COURSE BECAUSE THE TOTAL REPRESENTS ONLY 57 PERCENT OF THE POINTS POSSIBLE. REMEMBER, THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE. THE ACTUAL NUMBERS WILL VARY EACH GRADING SECTION.
FINAL EXAMS
STUDENTS WILL HAVE A FINAL EXAM AT THE END OF EACH SEMESTER. THESE EXAMS WITH INCLUDE ASPECTS OF ALL MATERIAL COVERED AND MAY INCLUDE ORAL AND WRITING PORTIONS. THE FINAL EXAM IN JUNE MAY INCLUDE THE END OF COURSE EXAM PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT. FINAL EXAMS ARE WORTH 100-200 POINTS.
CLASS PARTICIPATIONEDUCATION IS AN ACTIVE PROCESS, NOT A PASSIVE ONE. STUDENTS ARE
EXPECTED TO ASK QUESTIONS, ANSWER QUESTIONS, AND TAKE PART IN DISCUSSIONS. THE NATURE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING REQUIRES THAT STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN ORAL COMMUNICATION ON A DAILY BASIS. PARTICIPATION POINTS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO EARN EVERYDAY IN MY CLASS AND WILL BE KEPT IN STUDENTS’ “PASAPORTES” AND OUR CLASS CARDS DECK. AT THE END OF EACH GRADING PERIOD I WILL COLLECT THE “PASAPORTES” AND TOTAL THE CLASS CARDS DECK AND THE PARTICIPATION POINTS THAT THEY EARNED WILL BE PART OF THEIR 6-WEEK GRADE IN THE CLASS.
HOMEWORK (PART 1)
IN ADDITION TO THE RECOMMENDED 5-10 MINUTES OF DAILY VOCABULARY STUDY AT HOME, STUDENTS CAN EXPECT TO HAVE BETWEEN 10-15 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS PER 6-WEEK GRADING PERIOD., WHICH EQUATES TO ABOUT 2 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS EACH WEEK.
HOMEWORK (PART 2)• ON DAYS THAT HOMEWORK IS DUE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW IT TO ME ON
THEIR WAY INTO THE CLASSROOM.
• STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE THEIR HOMEWORK COMPLETED WILL BE ASSIGNED A MANDATORY AFTER SCHOOL “HOMEWORK STUDY HALL” THAT SAME DAY WITH ME IN ROOM 119 TO COMPLETE THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT AND TURN IT IN FOR PARTIAL CREDIT. STUDENTS WHO COME TO AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK STUDY HALL WITH THEIR HOMEWORK COMPLETED WILL BE DISMISSED AFTER TURNING IT IN.
• STUDENTS WHO DO NOT TURN IN LATE HOMEWORK AT THE END OF THE DAY AT HOMEWORK STUDY HALL WILL BE ASSIGNED A DETENTION.
MAKE-UP WORKALL STUDENTS WHO ARE ABSENT FOR A LEGITIMATE REASON AND WHO HAVE CLEARED THEIR
ABSENCE WITH THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE WILL BE GIVEN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO COMPLETE THEIR WORK WITHOUT PENALTY. IF A STUDENT IS ABSENT ONE DAY, THEY WILL HAVE ONE DAY TO MAKE UP MISSED WORK, IF THEY ARE ABSENT TWO DAYS, THEY WILL HAVE TWO DAYS TO MAKE UP THE MISSED WORK, ETC. FOR EXAMPLE: STUDENT “A” IS ABSENT ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY. THEY HAVE WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY TO MAKE UP ANY MISSED WORK. THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TURN ANY MISSED WORK IN OR MAKE UP ANY TESTS/QUIZZES AFTER THURSDAY AFTERNOON. WHEN A STUDENT COMES BACK FROM ANY ABSENCE THEY ARE TO LOOK AT THE “ABSENTEE BINDER” FOR ANY CLASS WORK/HANDOUTS THAT THEY MISSED. STUDENTS WITH UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO EARN POINTS ON THEIR MISSING ASSIGNMENTS, TESTS, OR QUIZZES UNTIL THEIR ABSENCES ARE CLEARED BY THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE.
BATHROOM POLICY
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR RESTROOM NEEDS BEFORE SCHOOL, DURING PASSING PERIODS, AND AT LUNCH. STUDENTS WILL BE PERMITTED TO USE THE RESTROOM DURING CLASS FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY. OF COURSE, THOSE STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO MAKE UP ANY LOST INSTRUCTIONAL TIME THAT DAY AFTER SCHOOL. STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO MEET WITH ME AFTER SCHOOL WILL BE ASSIGNED A DETENTION AND WILL HAVE THEIR CITIZENSHIP GRADE LOWERED.
CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES
I STRICTLY ENFORCE THE SCHOOL-WIDE BAN ON CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND WILL CONFISCATE THEM IF I SEE OR HEAR THEM IN MY CLASSROOM. TO AID STUDENTS IN RESISTING THE TEMPTATION TO USE THESE PROHIBITED ITEMS I WILL REQUIRE ALL STUDENTS’ BACKPACKS, HANDBAGS, AND PURSES TO REMAIN ON THE FLOOR NEAR OR UNDER THE STUDENTS’ DESKS DURING THE ENTIRE CLASS TIME. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO WEAR THEIR BACKPACK, PURSE ETC, OR HAVE IT SITTING IN THEIR LAP DURING CLASS. HEADPHONES/EAR BUDS MAY NOT BE WORN AROUND THE NECK OR HANGING OUT OF STUDENTS’ SHIRTS. IF SEEN, THEY WILL BE CONFISCATED. ANY STUDENT WHO HAS AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE, (CELL PHONE, EAR BUDS, ETC.) TAKEN FROM THEM WILL BE ASSIGNED AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION AND HAVE THEIR CITIZENSHIP GRADE LOWERED.
FOREIGN FILMS (SPANISH 5-6 ONLY)THROUGHOUT THE YEAR I WILL BE SHOWING A VARIETY OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FOREIGN FILMS
IN THEIR ORIGINAL SPANISH. FOREIGN FILMS NOT ONLY EXPOSE STUDENTS TO NEW DIALECTS OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE BUT WILL ALSO GIVE THEM FURTHER INSIGHTS INTO SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES’ UNIQUE CULTURES, POLITICAL SYSTEMS, HISTORY AND TRADITIONS. WE WILL DISCUSS MOVIE THEMES AND INTERPRETATIONS AS A CLASS AND STUDENTS WILL HAVE ORAL AND WRITTEN ACTIVITIES TO DO THROUGHOUT/AT THE CONCLUSION OF EACH MOVIE. BECAUSE THESE ARE FOREIGN FILMS MANY OF THEM ARE NOT RATED. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR DOUBTS ABOUT ANY OF THESE FILMS PLEASE LET ME KNOW. POSSIBLE FILMS TO BE SHOWN: VOCES INOCENTES, MACHUCA, LA HISTORIA OFICIAL, EL VIAJE DE CAROL, LA LENGUA DE LAS MARIPOSAS, AL OTRO LADO, DIARIOS DE UNA MOTOCILETA (CHE GUEVARRA), COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE, PAN’S LABYRINTH, AND VOLVER.
EXTRA CREDIT
STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME AND TO STUDY HARD FOR EACH QUIZ AND TEST. THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED IN THIS CLASS.
