DESCRIPTION
Track I is a combination of three language courses for students who are enrolled in the Study
Abroad Program and have not taken any Spanish courses at college-level. These three courses
are designed to help non-native speakers of Spanish to develop basic communicative
competence. It offers an intensive study and practice of the basic skills of a language: listening,
speaking, interacting, reading and writing. The main emphasis of this track is on communication
and, therefore, class attendance is essential.
escuchar, hablar, interactuar, leer y escribir.
OBJECTIVES
abordar textos extensos y finalmente, poder escribir textos relativamente complejos y cohesionados.
The main objective of this track is that the student achieves the knowledge of Spanish that allows him/her to
manage in daily life tasks that the immersion context affords, as well as to develop reading strategies to cope with
long texts and finally, to be able to write relatively complex and organized texts.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the successful completion of Track I, the student will be able to
• use basic greeting and leave taking expressions
• start, maintain and close simple face-to-face conversations on topics that are familiar or of

GRADES
Assessment and testing procedures will be representative of the type of language instruction offered through
classroom activities. Each course (SPAN 111, 112 and 211) will have an independent grade, calculated with the
following components:
Para SPAN 111
• Exámenes/Exams: parcial: 35% + final: 35% = 70%
• Tarea oral/Oral task: 10%
• Ejercicios y trabajos escritos/Homework and written assignments: 10%
• Participación en clase/In-class participation: 10%
Para SPAN 112 y 211
• Exámenes/Exams: parcial: 25% + final: 35% = 60%
• Tareas orales/Oral tasks: 10%
• Ejercicios y trabajos escritos/Homework and written assignments: 10%
• Lectura/Reading: 10%
• Participación en clase/In-class participation: 10%
9
Updated: 7/20/2018
Oral tasks: In order to calculate the 10% of the final grade in each course you will have to complete one oral task,
related to the topics and linguistic functions covered in class. Your teacher will tell you the format (i.e., an interview,
a monologue, a role-play with your peers, etc.) and the dates for each task. Pronunciation and fluency will be
mainly evaluated, as well as your adequate use of vocabulary and grammar.
Homework and written assignments: 10% of your final grade is based on written homework. You will have to
complete the assigned materials from the class material, as well as other material that your teacher photocopies.
In addition, you will have to turn in four compositions on different topics, following your teacher’s instructions.
Your participation involves a number of variables, including, but not limited to the following:
• Your use of Spanish in the classroom
-greeting people and taking leave using Spanish
-using Spanish during class (i.e., with instructor and in small groups), when asking and responding to questions
related (or not) to the material at hand, when engaged in casual conversation with classmates or instructor.
• Your willingness to participate in all class activities
• Your cooperation during group- and pair-work
• Your respect and attitude toward your peers and toward your instructor
Attendance is required and is checked daily. If there is a medical reason for being absent, the student must call the
USAC office on the day of the sickness to request an appointment with a doctor. Only with a note from a doctor
can the absence be considered an excused absence, which will not lower the final grade. Absences due to delayed
or missed flights, trains, buses, etc. are unexcused absences. One unexcused absence per course will not have
repercussions on a student´s grade. Two unexcused absences will lower the grade in class participation by five
points out of a total of ten points. If a student has three unexcused absences, s/he will not receive any points in
class participation.
Other requirements:
-The course is entirely taught in Spanish and students are expected to speak Spanish at all times. The student is
encouraged to use Spanish not only in the classroom but outside as well. S/he should try to speak Spanish with the
host family from the first day,
10
Updated: 7/20/2018
-late homework and compositions will not be accepted and make-up exams will not be given unless the student
has a medical justification,
-the dates for midterm and final exams are included in the syllabus and won´t be changed to accommodate
students´ travel plans or other personal issues,
-classes start punctually. Late arrivals and early departures from class will count as half an absence. It is important
to be prompt!
-no extra credit will be given under any circumstance,
-STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CONFIRM ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE RECEIVED BY THEIR INSTRUCTOR. THIS
INCLUDES ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY OR LEFT ON THE INSTRUCTOR'S DESK OR MAILBOX
WHEN THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT PRESENT.
Classroom decorum: All cell phones and electronic devices must be turned off and put way, unless your teacher
wants to use them as educational tools. Texting or having a cell phone on/ringing in class is disrespectful to the
instructor and the other students. If you use these devices after being warned, you will be asked to leave class, and
you will be counted absent (unexcused) for that day.

ATTENDANCE
University Attendance Policy: “Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the immediate family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.”
Attending class and class activities IS MANDATORY in this course. Students will not be allowed to have
any unexcused absences. Each unexcused absence will reduce the final grade number by one letter grade
(e.g. if a student were to receive an A-, his/her final grade would be B+ instead). Excused absences
comprise the following: participation in a scheduled event as a member of a university-sponsored
athletic/scholastic team (official absence form required); religious holidays; accident or illness (accident
11
Updated: 7/20/2018
report or health/doctor's note required); and death in the immediate family. Excuses for absences must
be submitted within two (2) days after the day of return.
Students are responsible for making up all work missed during absences. Students may not make up
graded work for unexcused absences (see Assessment policy below). Students must be sure to come to
class and class activities on time! Two considerable “lates” equal one unexcused absence.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY:
Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination based on a person's gender. Sexual harassment is contrary
to the University's values and moral standards, which recognize the dignity and worth of each person, as
well as a violation of the laws and University rules and policies. Sexual harassment cannot and will not be
tolerated by our University, whether by faculty, students, or staff; or by others while on property owned
by or under the control of the University.
The Polytechnic University of Valencia developed the Unit of Equality (Vicepresidency for Social
Responsibility and Cooperation) for the promotion of equal opportunities through policies for Equal
treatment, Effective Equality and non-discrimination between women and men in the field of higher

academic dishonesty will lead to lowered course grades, failure of the course or more severe measures,
depending on judgments of the gravity of the individual case.
Honors Statement: It is based on the premise that each student has the responsibility (1) to uphold the
highest standards of academic integrity in the student's own work, (2) to refuse to tolerate violations of
academic integrity in the University community, and (3) to foster a high sense of integrity and social
responsibility on the part of the University community.
Incoming students are expected to uphold their home University code of honor as well as the rules
establish at UPV. They will be under the Spanish University Student Statute published on Real Decreto
1791/2010, December 30th.
