This booklet gives you information on the entire Level 3 courses (A levels/BTECs) we offer in our Sixth Form. The courses are listed alphabetically and each provides information about the content of the course, entry requirements (all A level subjects require a minimum of 6 grade C’s or above including English Language at GCSE level unless otherwise specified), how it is assessed as well as further information on progression routes on completion of the course.

Making a decision about which courses to study as a sixth form student is critical to your success. You should consider each subject (students typically study 4 courses in Year 12) carefully and ensure that the courses reflect your interests, passions and that you will enjoy the content and the way of working. You should also think about whether you are better suited to courses that have a coursework/practical element or if you prefer exam based courses. Finally, will this course help you gain entry to the university course/career you are considering.

It is important you do your research prior to making your final course choice on GCSE results day. If you click the ‘Informed Choices’ document on our website you will learn what subjects top universities are looking for in order to gain entry to various higher education courses.

Be sure to consult with a number of people prior to making your final choices. You should speak to your parents, tutor, subject teachers throughout your decision-making process. You can also speak to a member of the Student Support Centre who can offer advice and point you in the right direction to get further information, such as the Connexions office. We can also arrange appointments with students and their parents to discuss options and consider the range of pathways available to students at this critical transition point in their lives.

You may have never studied economics before, and yet when you open a newspaper what do you read? “…a report from our economics correspondent”. Turn on the news on TV and what do you see ? An item on the state of the economy. Talk to friends and often the conversation will turn to the price of this or that product, or if you have got enough money to afford this or that.

Economics affects our daily lives. Continually we are being made aware of local, national and international economic problems, and continually we are faced with economic problems and decisions of our own.

Current issues could include: • What caused the ”credit crunch”? • Can the ‘debt culture’ amongst UK consumers ever be reversed?• How will the UK economy deal with ever increasing petrol prices?

Many people think Economics is all about money, and to some extent this is true. Economics has a lot to do with money; how are wage levels in an economy decided, how much people spend, what it costs to buy various items, what level of profits can firms earn. But economics is about much more than just the study of money. It is the study of how best to satisfy unlimited wants with limited resources.

Skills requiredTo do well in A Level Economics, you are likely to be:• Very interested in the big issues in the world around us• Aware of political policies and objectives• Good at analysing problems• Highly numerate and highly literate• Able to look at an argument from both sides• A logical person

AS Level

Unit 1: Competitive Markets - How They Work and Why They Fail - 90 minute examination consisting of supported multiple-choice questions and a data response This unit provides an introduction to the nature of economics and examines how the price mechanism allocates resources in markets. It analyses the nature of market failure, its causes and possible policy remedies. At the end of this unit, students should be able to apply supply and demand analysis to real-world situations; to understand why markets might not allocate resources efficiently and the methods of dealing with market failure, together with an evaluation of their effectiveness. Unit 2: Managing the Economy: - 90 minute examination consisting of a data response question

This unit introduces the key measures of economic performance and the main objectives and instruments of economic policy. Students should be able to use a basic AD/AS model to understand why demand and/or supply side policies may be seen as appropriate ways of managing an economy; predict the possible impact of such policies and to recognise the assumptions involved; argue for different approaches and identify criteria for success.

A2 LevelUnit 3: Business Economics and Economic Efficiency - 90 minute examination consisting of supported multiple-choice questions and a data response question.

This unit develops the content of Unit 1 and examines how the pricing and nature of competition between firms is affected by the number and size of market participants. At the end of this unit, students should be able to analyse the pricing and output decisions of firms in different contexts. They should also be capable of making an appraisal of government intervention aimed at promoting competitive markets.

Unit 4: The Global Economy - Examination of 2 hours, consisting of one essay and one data response question.

This unit develops the knowledge and skills gained in Unit 2 so that they can be applied in a global context. The application, analysis and evaluation of economic models is required as well as an ability to assess policies which might be used to deal with economic problems. An awareness of trends and developments in the global economy over the last 10 years is required.

The specification offers unique opportunities to consider issues of ‘literariness’ and ‘literalness’.

This specification offers opportunities for students to develop their subject expertise by engaging creatively, critically and independently with a wide range of texts. Using literary and linguistic concepts and methods, students analyse literary and non-literary texts in a range of modes and genres, in the process gaining insights into the nature of different discourses and ideas about creativity. Students develop skills as producers and interpreters of language by creating texts themselves and critically reflecting on their own processes of production. This an exam for those who love, and have always loved reading.
