Seaton has joined Belin McComick as a From the President . . . . With fall approaching, the Polk County Bar Association continues to be busy with various activities. As I reported in the June PCBA Advocate, we plan to be actively involved with the referendum for the Polk County Judicial System. In July, the Polk County Board of Supervisors took the important step of setting the referendum to be part of the election scheduled for November 5. It will seek voter approval for paying the costs of improving public safety in remodeling, reconstructing, historically rehabilitating, furnishing and equipping the buildings of the Judicial System, including the Historic Courthouse, the Criminal Court Annex (former Main Jail) and the Polk County Justice Center Annex (former JC Penny/Wellmark building). You will have the opportunity to hear more about the referendum and what we - as members of the PCBA - can do in support of the referendum when the co-chairs for the effort, Mary Kramer and Martha Willits, speak to us at the September luncheon (see more information below). We also are in the process of getting our committees underway for the year. Committees are a great way to become involved in the PCBA and to meet fellow members of the bar. Among the Committees are the Bench & Bar Committee, CLE Committee, Family Law Committee, Law Day Committee, Membership Committee, and Young Lawyers Division Committee. If you have not been involved in the PCBA, I encourage you to become a member of a committee. It is very easy to join - all you have to do is click here and complete the form. Trivia teams compete for good cause Twelve teamsof eightplayers eachshowed offtheirknowledge ofall things triviaand battled itout forbragging rightsat the PCBA'sfirst-ever TriviaChallenge Night to benefit the PCBA VolunteerLawyers Project held on April 11. The Master of Ceremonies, former Justice MichaelStreit, put the teams through their paces andquizzed them on a wide variety of trivia topics -both law-related and non law-related. Thecompetition was fierce, but "The Benchwarmers"emerged as the Trivia Champion and took homethe trophy. Team members were Mark Smith andJudges Douglas Staskal, Christopher McDonald,Carla Schemmel, Artis Reis, Robert Hanson, KarenRomano, Lawrence McLellan, and Eliza Ovrom. Nearly $5,000 was raised by the teams, each ofwhom made a donation to the PCBA VLP in orderto compete. In addition to the Benchwarmers, theother teams included Good Grefe, W & E Are So"Whitty," Team Dorsey & Whitney, ThunderChickens, Hudson's Trivial Pursuits, We've SeenYour Briefs, Nyemaster Goode At Trivia, TheStingers, The Liti Gators, Team DMTH, andWeinhardt & Logan. Other sponsors includedWhitfield & Eddy, PLC, which provided a deliciousbarbeque meal; Tim Pearson of Laden andPearson; and Judge Robert Blink and VictoriaHerring who donated artwork for the raffle. PCBA hosts annual golf outing A group of 112spirited golferstook part inthe annualPCBA Benchand Bar GolfTournament onJune 7 at theWaveland GolfCourse in DesMoines. In addition to providing the opportunity toplay golf and socialize with friends and colleagues,this event is the primary fundraiser for the PolkCounty Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project.This year, nearly $25,000 was raised for the PCBAVLP. Because of recent cutbacks, the success ofthis event has become essential to the servicesprovided by the PCBA VLP. In the Men's Foursome, this year's winners wereJim Wainwright, Wade Hauser, Eric Boehlert, andNathan Overberg. The Mixed Foursome winnerswere Mike Ensley, Marcy O'Brien, Amber Cahill, andKaren Oberman. In addition, Dan Zagoren won forthe Men's Longest Drive; Karen Oberman won forthe Women's Longest Drive winner; Cory Harriswon for the Longest Putt (both men and women);and Robert Thole won for the Closest to the Pin(both men and women). Feedback wanted on proposed rules

Chief Justice Mark Cady has signed an orderrequesting public comment on proposed rulechanges pertaining to the Client Security Fund.Changes regarding claim reimbursement andincreasing special assessments payable by lawyersto support the fund are outlined on the StateJudicial website. The deadline for submittingcomments is 4:30 p.m. on October 4.

The Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices, within theCivil Rights Division of the Department of Justice,will be visiting Iowa and has set up some outreachevents. PCBA members and the communities youserve are encouraged to come and speak aboutemployment rights and other civil rights issues.They will be in Des Moines on Sunday Aug. 11, atthe Zion Lutheran Church, 4300 Beaver Ave., from1-5 p.m., (interpreters for the Spanish, Karen, andBurmese languages are available); on Sunday,Aug. 11, at the American Friends ServiceCommittee, 4211 Grand Ave., from 3-5 p.m.(interpreters for Spanish available);and onMonday Aug. 12, at Lutheran Services of Iowa,3200 University Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30a.m. (interpreters for Spanish and Nepaliavailable).
