Has there ever been a time in your l i f e when you f e l t that things were really closing in around you? I have been goingW through that kind of a t r i a l lately. Within the next fewJlj week we will be selling our house and packing the last ofour things to ship to Kenya, I must decide what will beLuuuatJJCJOJ shipped, what we will take in our suitcases, what will bestored here for our f i r s t furlough, and what of our house-A things we will be getting rid of. Also, i t is finally dawning on mereally be leaving our family and friends for three years ,

A few days ago I sat down and began to read the book of I Peter. In thesecond verse of the first chapter, he said, May God bless you richly and grant you increasing freedom from all anxiety and fear, . Then Mike walked in the door with a700 check from the Somerset Christian Church. Will God provide for our financial needsas we leave for Kenya? I know that He willl Will He also grand me peace and freedomfrom anxiety? You can count on tNot unto us, 0 Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and forthy t r u t h s sake. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace; the mountains andthe hi l ls shal l break forth before you into singing, and a l l the trees, of thef ie ld s ha ll clap the i r hands. Isaiah 55:12

Well, I don t think one could say that we went forth with much joy as we lef t family andFriends in the Sta tes on fYlarch 5. But when we arr ived in Kenya on a beu t i fu l Tuesday morning of the 11th i t was with a great deal of joy that we began th e adventure of working foro u r Lord in A f r i c a . e are now in the middle of set t ing up housekeeping. Our main shipment of belongings andour Land Cruiser will arrive in Kenya on April 15 (we hope). e are finding things very expensive here (as everywhere). A gallon of gasoline is selling for 2.50 and we will need topay in the neighborhood of 1000 for a u^d ten cubic foot kerosene regrigerator. e are looking forward to what God has in store for us during this f i r s t year in Kenya.Linda will need to spend about three months on medical orientation in a government hospitaland we wi l l a l so take t ime fo r language s tudy .

FIRST SAFARIDick Hamilton and I made a quick three day saf-.ari (trip) down to Kara Pokot this week. Ithas been nearly a year now since the f i rs t timeI was in Kenya and the Kara Pokot area. I t wasgood to again meet John rflasonik, our pastor atKiwawa in Kara Pokot, and spend time discussingthe progress of the work. e took food supplies for the school children, and I was amazedat how many more students we now have. Part ofthe reason for this is the severe drought conditions being suffered in this part of Africa.Parents are Finding i t advantageous to sendtheir children to school where they can be fedrather than to keep them at home where food isscarce and there are other mouths to feed. enow have 6? children at the school, meeting ina classroom measuring only 12 by 15 feet. Forthis reason, many of the classes are being heldout of doors. e are needing to bui ld addit ional classrooms, but most of all we need to havesome type of building for the children to sleepin. Right now some of them are sleeping in theschool room some are staying with John andthe remainder must sleep outside on the groundbecause there is no room elsewhere. While we were at Kiwawa this week I was able tomeet with some of the elders of the community.I uas also able to borrow John's motorcycle and.pend some time getting to know the^ area andmeeting the people. I am now wishing that Inad budgeted money for a motorcycle in ourFirst term. I t is much easier to get around in3ur bush area where there are no roads, and i ti s cer ta in ly more economical than a four-wheeldrive vehicle for short- t r ip work when I don take the family .' am looking forward to the arrival of our Landruiser and supplies the middle of this monthso that we can begin to really je t involved inthe work we have come to Africa t r Jo*

    In Kiwawa, Kara Pokot these two t r ees awhite and a black, grow s ide by s idet h e i r branches i n t e r tw ined c l e a r to thetop so that i t is impossible to determinewhich leaves belong to which t r ee . Thepeople at Kiwawa say that th is is like thewhite missionary and the black AfricanLhr i s t i an . We s t and and work fo r the Lordside by side, concerned not that the Fruitbea r the mark o f th e white o r th e b lackbu t t h a t it bear th e mark of Je sus Chr i s t .

Timetables, schedules , and deadl ines do not have a grea t deal of importance in th is pa r t ofthe wor ld . There i s no place fo r our American sense o f hu r ry and urgency . There i s nopo in t in asking fo r someth ing ye s te zd .ay . Af te r s ix weeks, I am still wai t ing fo r a wate rfilter t h a t was to be in tomorrow. S t i l l impat ient , I hired a boatto take me out to the sh ip and searched c l ea r down to the bottom hold un t i l I found our LandCru i se r . Then came the weekend, the dock workers who wi l l no t work in the r a i n , customs, red tape But, Praise God, we now have everything we sent and the only damage tothe..Land Cruiser .was a broken t a i l l i gh t . In April a cholera epidemic began sweeping across the borderfrom Uganda into our part of Kenya. The epidemic is nearlypast now but in its watke i t left a path of death and suffering. This debilitating disease struck hard at th e Pokot people who were already weak because of the long drought andlack of food. We have no idea how many people died as a d irect resul t o f ch olera, but we are now seeing an equally tragic result of the epidemicstarving orphans. Babies and young children whosemothers died dur ing the epidemic are being brought to the mission. Most ofthem are dying of starvation. Relatives who have no extra food for thesechildren are bringing them to us and asking for dawa (medicine) to make themwell again. Sometimes i t i s too l a te . Rehydration f luid brings many of them back to l i feagain. Just as we were leaving af ter our l a s t safar i an old father came to us with h isyoungest son. He asked that we take him and feed him and t r ea t him as our own son. AsDick and Jane Hamilton and Mike and I stood there I th ink we were a l l unable to speak fo rawhile. We knew tha t i f we l e f t the young boy he would die. Final ly Dick sa id , Yes, wewil l take your son. e are now taking turns caring for a four-year-old Pokot boy whoweighs only 1? pounds (average weight for a four year old is pounds) and who is smallerthan o ur two- ye a r- ol d daugh t e r , Laura . 4H h H~H Jt ;H ^ 4H ^^ H 4H^ 4 h HOn June 25 Treyoj s ta r ted f i r s t grade a t Courtney Chris t-ian Academy (also known as Mike's Office and Junk Room ).He i s us ing Acce l e ra t ed Chr i s t i an Educat ion mate r i a l .
