Chimes

On Friday, March 8, incoming and

outgoing officers shared one of the

most meaningful events in our

church year. We heard and

approved the faith statements of our

incoming officers. They had

already met several times with

Andy and Katelyn to learn more

about being an officer at Covenant

and to examine the faith journey

that had brought them this far. It is

always inspiring to see the Spirit

bring new leaders for our church

life.

On Saturday morning we had the

officers’ retreat, where we looked

at the NOAH Report from the

perspective of what had been

accomplished, what still needed

implementation, and what new

ideas have arisen in the past year.

We also spent time discussing the

role of deacons and the ways they

can serve the role of caring for our

church family and our community.

We started a conversation that will

be carried on in the next few

months.

That afternoon, Session met again

to take care of some regular business.

The Interior Design Task Force gave

April 2019 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AUGUSTA, GEORGIA

Notes from Session From our Pastors

(See “Session Notes,” page 2)

As we continue through the season of Lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter, it

has been meaningful to focus our energies on prayer at Covenant. Thanks to

all of you who have submitted prayer requests, joined us on Wednesday nights

for our series on prayer, and tied prayer ribbons to our prayer tree as it has

moved around the church. This focus on prayer will lay the groundwork for

the joy and renewal of Easter later this month (see p. 4 for our Holy Week

schedule).

In a similar fashion, the leaders in our church have been working hard over the

past month to lay the groundwork for our ministry over the next year. At the

officer retreat in March, we made the decision to reorganize the Diaconate

(the Board of Deacons) so that they may more actively engage in their work as

it is set forth in the Bible. According to our Book of Order, “The ministry of

deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service,

sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the

sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies

or structures, or anyone in distress (G-2.0201).” If you want to read the

original story of how we came to have deacons in the church, then go to Acts

6:1-7. In the coming months, the Session and the Diaconate will continue to

work together to define what the ministry of deacons looks like at Covenant.

Covenant officers also evaluated the NOAH report together. The NOAH

report was adopted in the fall of 2017 and resulted in a reorganization of our

leadership structure. While those changes have served us well, we wanted to

evaluate and make any necessary pivots now that we have lived with this new

structure for a year. One change that the session voted to make was to move

from five ministry teams to six. The Sustainability Ministry Team is in the

process of spinning off their functions around the maintenance of the property

to form the new Buildings and Grounds Ministry Team. Sustainability will

continue to have functions around budget, finance, and personnel.

It is our hope that we will continue grow and improve as the Session and

Diaconate evaluate their leadership of this congregation. Please pray for us as

we lead this congregation in mission and ministry together.

Blessings,

Pastor Andy

At the direction of the Session the Interior Design Task Force reviewed art, crafts, banners and other artistic pieces in the building. We found many treasures and engaged in hearty discourse about the most appropriate recommendation to Session for each item.

A number of works were placed in new locations around the building with the combined wisdom of the Task Force. We hope they will enhance various areas as well as help us to honor and remember some of our artists including Jessica Boatwright, Gene Harrison and Jon Latimer.

Save the Date for Graduation Sunday!

On Sunday, May 19, we will celebrate Covenant members who are graduating from high school, college, and graduate school this year! We’ll recognize the graduates during the 11 a.m. worship service and celebrate them at a reception after worship. If you or someone in your family is graduating this year, please take a moment to let us know by calling the church office or completing this form: https://form.jotform.com/kcooke/2019-covenant-graduates. Thank you!

We approved using the loose plate

offering on Youth Sunday as a

donation to Camp Ivey. Finally, we

approved splitting the current

Sustainability Team into two

ministry teams: Sustainability and

Buildings and Grounds; and began

the process of assigning Session

members to the Ministry Teams.

It was a joy to celebrate our progress

with the ordination and installation

on the following Sunday.

Interior Design Task Force

Several other pieces were believed to be lovely, impressive, or historical but no longer the best representations of our ministry today.

The Task Force is recommending a silent auction of several pieces that will no longer be displayed in the church. Please watch for details and bid on pieces that you may want to enjoy! Subject to Session’s approval the proceeds will go to a fund for new liturgical art or other furnishings to keep Covenant attractive and current.

Special mention is offered regarding the lovely banners created by the “Creative Class” in the 1970s that have adorned the walls on either side of the main entrance doors by the sanctuary. The banners were glorious in their day and have delivered a great message to members and visitors alike throughout over the years in that space.

Respectfully, The Interior Design Task Force.

EASTER LILIES

Everyone in the Covenant congregation who wishes to remember or honor family and/or friends through the gift of Easter Lilies is invited to make a donation to the Flower Fund. Donations will be used to purchase lilies to place in the Sanctuary on Easter Sunday. To cover the cost of the plants, we are asking for a minimum contribution of $15.00 for each dedication. Checks should be made payable to Covenant Presbyterian Church and designated for the Flower Fund. You may send checks to the Church or place in the offering plate. Orders should be made by Thursday, April 11.

our first attempt in working with

Sanderlin Farms, and we already feel

that a wonderful partnership has

been formed.

We are currently in the process of

registering students for Summer

Fun. This year we have elected to

have Christian themes for each week

and share the joy of a biblical

view. The themes will include

Growing with God, Lego and Let

God, Make a Joyful Noise, and

more. Summer Fun registration

forms can be found outside the

Preschool office.

In April we will be focusing on the

Story of Easter and new life. We

will have many activities regarding

the season of Spring and the changes

that we will see outdoors. We will

look forward to hunting for Easter

Eggs and celebrating the changes

that occur when a caterpillar turns in

to a butterfly.

Covenant Presbyterian Church has a

Preschool Scholarship fund to help

students attend our school who

might not be able to afford private

education. Please consider a gift to

our scholarship fund. We have

many young families who would

greatly appreciate the opportunity to

provide their children with a

Christian early childhood education.

More information about our school

is located on the table

outside the school

office or online

through the church

web site. The school

office number is 706-

ENOPION THEATRE

COMPANY

The Enopion Theatre Company Presents “The Cure” on Saturday, May 11, at 3:00 p.m.

In a small rural town called Jeru-Salem, the people are a hardworking, God-fearin’ folk. Many are farmers who believe in working the land to reap what they sow. Joe and Mary Carpenter have fallen into the slow cadence of life in this small town and are raising up two boys, Joshua and James. But Mary has found herself “in the family way” again. This time she is praying for a girl. You’ll meet the other town folk as they gather for prayer meetings, sing those old Gospel songs of days gone by visit with neighbors and go about their day. But something is about the change this little town… a sickness that sweeps across the globe wiping out town after town and now it has hit this little community of Jeru-Salem. There is only one hope, one solution that can save them – The Cure.

Tickets are $10 per person. This performance will be held at the Ivory Box Theatre, 3814 Commercial Court, Martinez, Georgia 30907. If you plan to join us, please bring cash or check (made out to Covenant Presbyterian Church) to the church office by MONDAY, APRIL 1.

For more information contact Sandra Bowman Bowman (706-394-1751).

REALM

Our church is moving to a new church record keeping solution called Realm®. It primarily serves the administrative needs of our staff, but it also offers some exciting opportunities to support the way you are involved in our church. Not only will this improve work life for our

ministry staff, it will make it easier for our church family to connect with each other, keep up with what’s going on, and grow as a connected community of believers.

In a couple of weeks you will receive more information about Realm. Then, an email will be sent to invite you to sign-up to Realm.

LENTEN PRAYER

C.S. Lewis is quoted as saying

“Prayer doesn’t change God; it

we know that prayer is powerful

even if we don’t fully understand

it.

This Lent, Covenant pastors and

officers are committing to praying

for every congregation member by

name, and we invite you to share

any particular prayer requests

you’d like us to include in our

prayers for you. Here’s how it

works:

We’ve divided the church roster

Church Member Profiles

FRED PAUER

Fred Pauer has been a member of Covenant Presbyterian

Church since 1986, when Dr. Regan was our minister.

Fred soon established early ties to the church including

fishing with Brock and Knox Daniels. He served as an

elder during the time Dr. Regan was pastor and valued

working with GAP Ministry on Greene Street. Fred has

also taught men’s Sunday school, working with then civil

engineer Ernie Sizemore, who now is with Mission on

the Move in Honduras.

Fred served in the U. S. Army for 22 years, retiring in

1987 from the Signal Corps at Ft. Gordon as a Sergeant

First Class. He served in Vietnam, Turkey, Germany, and

Korea, working with technology such as their teletype

machine.

Fred earned bachelors’ and master’s degrees in

counseling during his career and worked in Aiken as an

alcohol and drug counselor after service in the Army. He

still works with the Alcohol and Drug Commission in

Aiken two days a week. In 1988, he began work with the

Department of Corrections, which he continued for 10

years, becoming a subject expert on the treatment of

sexual offenders. Fred worked with the sexual violent

predator program as its first counselor. The program is

located within the prison but because it is a civil program,

there is more leeway to hold problematic offenders

within the program when needed. Fred developed the

curriculum for the program and felt the work was

productive but high gas costs and the commute led him to

retire from that position in 2008.

He enjoyed SCUBA diving for several years, diving on

Saturdays as part of an advanced school in the Savannah

River.

At 73, with five knee replacements and medical

complications from other foot problems he has not been

able to attend church regularly, but Fred hopes that the

recent acquisition of a collapsible electric scooter will

allow more regular attendance.

While Fred was born in Cleveland, Ohio, his wife,

Connie, grew up in Seoul, South Korea. They’ve been

married 39 years. Their son, Jason, works for Best Buy in

Indiana. Fred’s father, who had Parkinson’s disease and

lived in Ohio, moved south to live here for his final six

years.

~ Jeff Heck

CONNIE PAUER

The Pauers joined Covenant in 1986, which happened

somewhat as an accident. Having moved to Augusta in

1985, Connie and Fred asked a neighbor for a

Presbyterian church to attend and the neighbor

recommended the First Presbyterian Church as a good

one. The couple stopped at the first Presbyterian church

they came to on Walton Way — Covenant— rather than

making it to First Presbyterian Church. They had already

tried three Baptist churches in the area, but a dinner with

Covenant members made them feel at home, and they

loved the sense of fellowship in the church.

Connie was born in Seoul, South Korea, with doctors on

both sides of her family. Her life changed when she lost

her father, who was a healer, in a laboratory fire when

she was five years old. Her mother’s encouragement of

Connie, her three brothers and a sister in the Presbyterian

church there helped her family recover from their loss.

While Presbyterianism is very popular in Korea — and is

the largest religious group — Fred notes that one

difference is that the pastor declares amounts of

donations by its members during services.

Connie values Covenant Presbyterian Church highly.

Their son, Jason, was invited to attend preschool classes

at the church, and she and Fred credit the classes with

their son’s success in life because he was able to read

before he started kindergarten. Connie served as an

assistant in the Sunday School for years and has been a

member of Covenant long enough to see some of the

children she worked with graduate from high school.

Fred and Connie met in South Korea while he was

stationed there, and they married at the Yong San Chapel

on the military base, with a Korean chaplain performing

the marriage ceremony. Many of Connie’s relatives

continue to live in Korea, which she visited in 2016; she

notes that the pollution levels had worsened since her last

visit.

Connie likes to stay in shape, so both she and Fred go to

the gym to exercise five nights per week. She’s been

known to do Zumba and yoga classes back-to-back.

She holds a business diploma from Kerr Business

College and has earned her GED. She enjoys preparing

food for her guests.

Staff News

NEW FINANCE SECRETARY

Dear Covenant family,

We are excited to announce that we have hired Linda-Jean Jay to serve as our Finance Secretary at

Covenant Presbyterian Church. She comes to us with more than 20 years of experience in all phases of

organizational administration. Most recently, she has served in various departments at the University of

Wyoming, UNC Charlotte, and UNC Wilmington. She has an M.P.A. from UNC Wilmington and a

B.A. from Wright State University.

LJ and her husband, Charles, have two grown daughters. They also have friends in Augusta and

connections here from many years ago, which make them excited to be settling here now.

We are grateful to Brock Daniels (chair), Jim Crimmins, and Diane Griffin, who have served as the search committee for

this position. They have worked quickly and thoroughly to find a well-qualified candidate who will serve our

congregation.

LJ’s first day was March 19 and she trained with Pam Kmiecik for two weeks. You are welcome to stop in and say hello

between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please join us in welcoming LJ into the Covenant

family!

Sincerely,

Andy and Katelyn Gordon Cooke, Co-Pastors

A NOTE FROM

JENN BOOCOCK

Sadly, I am writing to let you know

that due to a change in my husband’s

position, we will be leaving

Augusta. It had been my hope to

remain here at the school through the

end of the school year, however, due

to some unforeseen circumstances

my last day will be April 5th. I have

been working closely with Katelyn

and Andy, and we have come up

with a plan to complete the school

year and begin the search for a new

Director.

It has truly been a blessing to work

here at Covenant. I have been

employed in Early Childhood

Education for 20 years, and it is rare

to find a group of individuals that

believe so strongly in its value. In

addition to the academic component

to our program this group has a deep

understanding of what we can do to

teach children Christian values as

well. This capability was here

before I came, and I know that it will

continue long after I am gone! Please

feel confident in

the knowledge that

the leadership here

at the Church is

very strong and

you can depend on

their guidance

through this

transition.

Sincerely,

Jenn Boocock

A NOTE FROM OUR

PASTORS

Dear Covenant families,

So many of our conversations with

young children are about feelings.

We talk about emotions like

happiness, sadness, and

excitement. We felt a lot of feelings

when Jenn shared her news with us,

and we imagine that you may have

feelings too. We're sad that she's

leaving us, but we're also excited for

her that she'll be closer to family

again in Florida. Jenn has been an

excellent preschool director, and

we've been blessed by her expertise

in early childhood education, her love

for children, and her kind

heart. We're grateful for the time

she's been with us, and we will miss

her!

In anticipation of Jenn's departure in

early April, we have talked with

Sustainability Ministry Team leaders

to create a transition plan and begin a

search for a new director. The

preschool is an important ministry of

our church, and we are committed to

continuing the standards of

excellence and community of

Covenant Preschool. In the

meantime, we hope you will join us

in thanking Jenn and sending her to

Florida with our love and gratitude.

Grace and peace,

Pastors Andy & Katelyn Gordon
