Congratulations to Covenant, SJO and Hoag Orthopedic Institute Judged Best for Hip and Knee Replacements
Medicare now tracks the outcomes of hip and knee replacements at hospitals across the country. Covenant Health, St. Joseph Hospital, Orange (SJO) and Hoag Orthopedic Institute are among Medicare’s 97 best hospitals where patients seem to have the most successful recoveries after surgery. Measuring the rate of readmission within 30 days of discharge and the rate of complications such as infection, heart attack, blood clots and pneumonia, Medicare’s Hospital Compare website shows how hospitals compare to the U.S. national quality measure. Covenant Health, SJO and Hoag Orthopedic Institute all received a “better” ranking in both categories for hip and knee replacements. As a snapshot of just one metric of quality, we celebrate the efforts of the staff at these hospitals to extend the healing ministry and excel in quality, safety, efficiency and the patient experience. Providing Perfect Care to our patients increases the Value of our network of care and contributes to Essentiality, both of which are strategic dimensions of performance and enablers for success for St. Joseph Health. Well done!

A Reflection on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Today, as we reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we honor his work and efforts for justice and equality. May we find in-spiration in his words and a reminder to stand with courage, resilience and compassion for each other and the communities we serve. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of com-fort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Language Translation for Patient Care
Conversing in another second language is an unfamiliar terri-tory, therefore, smartphones have been equipped with techno-logical capabilities to provide basic language translation ser-vices. Smartphones cannot provide the professionalism of a skilled interpreter, but can help a user overcome the language barrier enough to understand and be understood. “Take a deep breath. Fill your lungs all the way,” said a respira-tory therapist. Translation in Spanish: “Tome una respiración. Llene sus pul-mones de todo el camino.” Conveyed message: “Grab a deep breath. Fill your lungs with all the road.” Computer or machine translation applications are not recom-mended for patient care. If the need arises, call a qualified in-terpreter at 800-264-1552.

Spotlighted in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Are you a health professional that wouldn't mind sharing more about your story, what you do and what kind of research you are doing with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal? The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is starting a new segment that is a ‘meet your healthcare professional’ spotlight. They are interested in featuring doctors, nurses and others that take care of patients! This would be a way for the community to learn more about the person taking care of them, not just the professional side. Also, she is looking for medical professionals that are currently working on research projects. They want to know why medical professionals are doing the research and how it will help the community. This is a GREAT way to get all the great Covenant Health em-ployees recognized for all the great work you all are doing and will continue to do. We just need volunteers! If you are inter-ested in participating, please email Whitney Bryant at [email protected]. Make sure and include a little back-ground information on your research and why you are inter-ested in the subject.

Other Updates
• A project is in the works to stop the automatic printing of the laboratory labels. All laboratory and blood gas label printing will be done with MobiLab. A schedule has not been completed yet since there are several tasks to be done, and we must coordinate with the builders working on Northern California. Everyone should use MobiLab routinely and notify the help desk if there are issues.
• We are taking this time to look at our downtime procedures and improve! Keep reading The Huddle for more details and updates.
• Many people often ask, “What is the difference between IT and CIS?” We feel the CI Department (Purple People) bridge the gap between clinical staff and IT. We are here to help you! Do not hesitate to ask!
If you need any help with MEDITECH, please call 5-5555 or email [email protected].
The ‘View EMR Link’ is now available for use and can be found on your EasyPass2 desktop. This link offers view-only capabilities when a downtime occurs and the network is still available.
