The Eternal Covenant continued

The TermsIn the Eternal Covenant the Father is the Testator and the Son is the

Heir. Now we will look at the terms of the Eternal Covenant. What did Christ agree to do before the beginning of the world?

1. Jesus agreed to be our head. There were two men in history who were the heads of the human race. One man, Adam, represented all of humanity. The other Man, Jesus, represented those who are redeemed.

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. [1 Cor. 15:45, 47]

The first Adam produced a race of sinners. The last Adam, Jesus, produced a race of saints. Jesus undertook to represent His people and free them from condemnation; therefore, He is called the last Adam, the Second Man.

2. Jesus, as the legal representative, agreed to be responsible for all His people. He fulfilled their legal obligations, earning for them the blessings of the fulfilled law. He worked perfect righteousness on His people’s behalf. Jesus was the Head first, then He became the Saviour. He represented us first and then He became our substitute. Jesus had to first enter into the work of suretyship by the appointment of God. After He became the representative of His people, He was able to discharge all their legal obligations by paying the debt they were unable to pay.

For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the Church: and he is the Saviour of the body. [Eph. 5:23]

So we see that in order for Christ to die [and rise] on our behalf, He first had to be our representative.

Paul refers to this Eternal Covenant when he speaks of the Covenant being confirmed in or to Christ, as it was revealed to Abraham. The Covenant was between the Godhead and Christ and was solemnly agreed upon and ratified. The promise was made to Abraham’s seed - which is Christ. Even in the Abrahamic Covenant, as we will shall see,

Christ is the ultimate representative.

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made, He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed which is Christ. And this I say, that the Covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. [Gal. 3:16-17]

1. In the Eternal Covenant the ______________ is the Testator and the Son is the Heir.

2. Jesus agreed to be our _____________.

3. The first Adam produced a race of ______________.

4. The last Adam, Jesus, produced a race of ______________.

5. Jesus, as the legal representative, agreed to be _____________ for all His people.

6. Jesus was the Head __________, then He became the Saviour.

7. The promise was made to Abraham’s seed - which is _________.

3. Christ agreed to become a Man. Christ had to become a man in order to obey the terms of the Covenant. He had to serve under the law in the place of mankind and have a soul and body which was capable of suffering and receiving the wages of the sins of His people. Think about that: God the Son had to limit Himself to a human body - He had to be really human. It is impossible to imagine the depth of the humiliation - not just in time but also in eternity because, even after the resurrection, Jesus kept His human body. True, it was then a glorified body, but it was a body nevertheless. Christ’s body will probably be the only scarred one in heaven.

Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will O God. Above when He said sacrifice and offering and burnt offering and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said He, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first that He may establish the second. [Heb.

10:5-9]

This Scripture is referring to the Eternal Covenant and shows the voluntary acceptance of the human Saviour to take our place.

For verily He took not on Him the nature of angels; but He took on Him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. [Heb. 2:16-17]

Jesus was like His brethren. In other words, He had a real body and soul.

8. Christ agreed to become a _____________.

9. Jesus had to serve under the _____________ in the place of mankind and have a soul and body which was capable of suffering and receiving the wages of the sins of His people.

10. Jesus ________________ took our place.

4. Jesus agreed to the method of creation, redemption, and divine government along with the system of law, regulations, rites, and ceremonies. There was a special, practical relationship between the Father and the Son because the Son agreed to fulfill all the terms of the Eternal [or Everlasting] Covenant.

In this relationship, the Father was the Testator or Appointer and the Son - the God-Man - was the Mediator, the Head, and the Surety of His people. The Father became the Lord of Christ and the Son became His Servant. The Father is greater because of His authority in giving the commandment, which is in reference to the Eternal Covenant that was in force between the Father and the Son.

O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord:... Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. [Ps. 16:2, 9, 11]

And He shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord in the majesty of the name of the Lord His God; and they shall abide: for now shall He be great unto the ends of the earth. [Micah

5:4]

Ye have heard how I said unto you I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said I go unto my Father: for my Father is greater than I...But that the world may know that I love the Father: and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. [John 14:28, 31]

No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. [John 10:18]

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. [John 12:49]

In this practical relationship, the Son becomes a servant first, then He becomes a mediator.

Behold my servant whom I uphold: mine elect in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon Him: He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. [Is. 42:1]

But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [Phil. 2:7]

Notice that being in the form of a servant comes before being made in the likeness of men. This shows the Covenant relationship was in force between the Father and the Son before the Son came to earth in a human body.

This Covenant relationship between the Father and the Son explains the Scriptures where it says “ the Father is greater” or the Father “gave me commandment.” This is not being greater in the sense of being superiour or greater in value. It is greater in the position of authority.

11. Jesus ____________ to the method of creation, redemption, and divine government along with the system of law, regulations, rites, and ceremonies.

13. The Father is greater because of His ______________.

14. The Son becomes a servant _______________, then He becomes a mediator.

15. Being in the form of a servant comes _____________ being made in the likeness of men.

5. Jesus agreed that death would fulfill the requirements of the broken law for those who would accept Him.

The wages of sin is death. There was no provision in the law for the punishment of the innocent. The innocent could not die. Guilt and punishment are related. Where there is no guilt for sin there can be no punishment. Therefore, Jesus - Who was perfect - could not receive the wages of sin. Since He was innocent He had no guilt of His own for which to suffer the judgment. Jesus was a Man Who could not die - no sin, no death.

Jesus could only be guilty and suffer death because the sins of His people, the elect, were imputed to Him. Their sins were placed on Him and counted as His own. The sins of the elect were not imparted, in other words, our sins did not make Jesus sinful - His nature was never contaminated. Our sins were imputed to Him or put to His account so He could suffer and die on our behalf. Jesus did not become a sinner for then He would have had to die for His own sin but He took the responsibility for our sin.

For example, when I go to a bank machine with a debit card, I can take money out of my bank account and put it into my wallet - it has been transferred from one place to another. Jesus has the debit card to my “sin: account. When He went to the cross He withdrew every single sin [past, present, future, and - most importantly - original] and placed it in His account. Not only that but also He deposited His righteousness into my account. When the Father looks at my account He sees the righteousness of Christ.

The only way that our sin could be transferred was for the innocent Substitute to take upon Himself the office of suretyship. He could then become liable for our debt and guarantee its payment. Jesus could only do this because He was our Federal Head or Representative.

The sacrifice of Christ is only valid because of the Eternal Covenant that was made in the Godhead. It was agreed that the death of Christ would be the only means of propitiation for sin. Propitiation, as it is used in the New Testament, means to appease the righteous anger of God against sin. This can only be done through the blood of Christ as agreed upon in the Eternal Covenant before the foundation of the world.

When we don’t understand the Eternal Covenant relationship in the Godhead and the way it works on earth, we don’t completely understand what Jesus died to achieve. Often it is thought that the death of Christ opened the opportunity for human beings to be saved. It is seen as the way for God to pardon the sin of those who would receive it while still maintaining His justice.

The above is true, but it is not the entire picture. The death of Christ was the fulfillment of the Covenant with the Father. It not only opens the way of salvation, but also guarantees salvation to everyone who is named in the Covenant. If you are a true believer in Christ, your name was written in the Eternal Covenant before the foundation of the world. Not one person for whom Christ died can miss the provision of the Covenant.

And this is the Father's will which hath sent me that of all which He hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. [John 6:39]

This should give us a great encouragement and confidence in God. Jesus is not going to lose us! No matter how we feel from time to time, no matter what our struggles, we are secure. The devil can’t have us. We are the personal possession of Jesus Christ and nobody steals from Him. He bound the strongman, the strongman did not bind Him.

16. Jesus agreed that ____________ would fulfill the requirements of the broken law for those who would accept Him.

17. The wages of __________ is death.

The Eternal Covenant continued

The LegacyThe next part of the Covenant is the Legacy or benefits for keeping

the Covenant. Jesus was willing and able to do and keep the terms of the Covenant so He could claim the promises or legacy of the Covenant.

The first series of promises in the legacy involves the benefits that He personally would receive for keeping the Eternal Covenant.

1. Jesus was given Divine power to perform the specifications of the Covenant. The Father did not give Jesus an impossible task. Everything that Jesus was asked to do, He was given the power to do it.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; And shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears: [Is. 11:1-3]

And He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; [John 8:29]

2. Jesus was guaranteed Divine protection to carry out His work. The devil tried many time to destory Jesus, even when He was a Baby, but Jesus was protected from harm. The Father was watching over Him.

I the Lord have called thee in righteousness and I will hold thine hand and will keep thee, and give thee for a Covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles. [Is. 42:6]

3. Jesus was promised Divine assistance in fulfilling the terms and conditions of the Covenant. The Father would help Him. We also see several times in the life of Jesus angels coming to minister to Him after especially difficult battles.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged til He have set judgment in the earth: and the isle shall wait for His law. [Is. 42:4]

”Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a Covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them, even by the springs of water shall He guide them. [Is. 49:8-10]

I have glorified thee on earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. [John 17:4]

1. Jesus was given Divine ________________ to perform the specifications of the Covenant.

2. And He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me

_______________.

3. Jesus was guaranteed Divine _______________ to carry out His work.

4. Jesus was promised Divine __________________ in fulfilling the terms and conditions of the Covenant.

4. Jesus received Divine promises that He could claim. Jesus operated in faith, just as we do. He had to know the promises, claim them, and believe that the Father would keep His promises.

He shall cry unto me, Thou art my Father, My God, and the Rock of My salvation. [Ps. 89:26]

He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? Let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? Lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up. Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of His servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let Him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon His God.” [Is. 50:8-10]

”And again I will put my trust in Him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.” [Heb. 2:13]

5. Jesus was given Divine assurance of the success of His mission and that He would receive the reward. Jesus walked this earth as a true human being, laying aside His Divinity. It was by faith in the Scripture, quicken by the Holy Spirit, that Jesus discovered that He was the Son of God. It was by faith in the Scripture that Jesus understood His mission and had the assurance that He would succeed. Jesus operated on this planet the same way you and I are to operate - by faith in the Scripture quicken by the Holy Spirit.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. [Is. 53:10-11]

Also I will make Him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for Him for evermore, and my Covenant shall stand fast with Him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and His throne as the days of heaven. [Ps. 89:27-29]

The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the

womb of the morning: thou has the dew of thy youth. [Ps. 110:1-3]

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. [Phil. 2:9-11]

5. Jesus received Divine ______________ that He could claim.

6. Jesus was given Divine __________________ of the success of His mission and that He would receive the reward.

7. Jesus walked this earth as a true _____________ being.

8. It was by __________ in the Scripture that Jesus understood His mission and had the assurance that He would succeed.

The second series of benefits in the legacy had to do with the promises Jesus would receive concerning His people.

1. Jesus would have gifts to give His people.

Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men;... [Ps. 68:18]

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that He might fill all things. And He gave some apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers. [Eph. 4:10-11]

2. Jesus was promised that His people would be willing to receive His Lordship over them and that they would serve Him. He knew that all the people named in the Eternal Covenant would be His. His suffering and death would not be for nothing. It would be successful.

Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. [Ps. 110:3]

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise

him up at the last day. [John 6:44]

A seed shall serve Him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that He hath done this. [Ps. 22:30-31]

3. Jesus was promised that His people would inherit eternal life as a result of the work His accomplished. Everyone will exist forever, but the elect will enter into life in its fullest and most complete sense.

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began. [Titus 1:2]

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. [John 10:27-30]

9. Jesus would have __________ to give His people.

10. Jesus was promised that His people would be willing to receive

His ________________ over them and that they would serve Him.

11. Jesus was promised that His people would inherit ___________ as a result of the work His accomplished.

4. The infilling of the power of the Holy Spirit was part of the reward Jesus earned for us.

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father, upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. [Luke 24:49]

Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father, the promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. [Acts 2:33]

5. Jesus was promised that His people would be worshiping kings

and priests.

Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and His Holy One to Him whom man despiseth, to Him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and He shall choose thee. [Is. 49:7]

12. The infilling of the power of the ________________ was part of the reward Jesus earned for us.

13. Jesus was promised that His people would be _____________ kings and priests.

Names Of The Eternal CovenantThe Eternal Covenant is known by several names in Scripture.

1. The Eternal Covenant is called the Everlasting Covenant because of its perpetuity and because its blessings were planned in eternity past and will continue forever. Note: Eternity Past is a term to help us understand something that is beyond our ability to know because in eternity there is no time so there can be no past or future.

Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting Covenant with you even the sure mercies of David. [Is. 55:3]

2. The Eternal Covenant is called the Covenant of Peace because it removes the enmity that Adam’s sin brought between God and man. We have been reconciled to God and He made peace. One of the titles of Jesus is The Prince Of Peace.

And I will make them a Covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. [Ez. 34:25]

Moreover, I will make a Covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting Covenant with them: and I will place them and multiply them and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them. [Ez. 37:26]

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His

shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. [Is. 9:6]

And that He might reconcile both unto God, in one body, by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby. [Eph. 2:16]

Not only did Jesus bring peace between God and man but also He brought peace between Jew and Gentile by uniting them in one body. In Christ there is now no division because of race.

3. The Eternal Covenant is called the Covenant of Life in contrast to the Covenant of works which ended in death. The Eternal Covenant has the principle of life flowing through it.

Write out and memorize Titus 1:2 ___________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My Covenant was with Him of life and peace; and I gave them to Him for the fear wherewith He feared me, and was afraid before my name. [Mal. 2:5]

4. The Eternal Covenant is called the Holy Covenant because it was made between the Persons of the Godhead. It is also called the Holy Covenant because it provides holiness of a Divine character for the people of God. We stand in the righteousness of Christ as purchased in the Eternal Covenant.

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember His holy Covenant. [Luke 1:72]

5. It is called the Better Covenant in contrast to the Mosaic Covenant and animal sacrifice which could never do away with sin.

By so much was Jesus made the surety of a better testament. [Heb. 7:22]

14. The Eternal Covenant is called the ________________ Covenant because of its perpetuity and because its blessings were planned in eternity past and will continue forever.

15. The Eternal Covenant is called the Covenant of ____________ because it removes the enmity that Adam’s sin brought between God and man.

16. One of the titles of Jesus is The Prince Of ____________.

17. The Eternal Covenant is called the Covenant of _____________ in contrast to the Covenant of works which ended in death.

18. The Eternal Covenant is called the ___________ Covenant because it was made between the Persons of the Godhead.

19. It is also called the Holy Covenant because it provides ________ of a Divine character for the people of God.

20. It is called the ____________ Covenant in contrast to the Mosaic Covenant and animal sacrifice which could never do away with sin.

We have now finished looking at the Eternal Covenant. Before we see how it is revealed in the seven major Covenants of love which God made with mankind, we need to make sure we understand the concept of Federal Headship.

Federal HeadshipIf we don’t understand the idea of Federal Headship we are missing

the key to understanding God’s dealings with the human race, we are unable to discern man’s relation to Divine law, and we will fail to appreciate the principles upon which the atonement of Christ is based.

The words “federal headship” - like “trinity” and “incarnation” - are not in the Bible. It is a theological term used to describe the Biblical teaching of representation.

There have been two federal heads: Adam and Christ. They each entered into a Covenant with God and acted on behalf of their people. They legally represented their people. God considered all those whom they represented as being “in” them. Adam represented the entire human race and Christ represented those whom the Father had given Him.

And Adam was not deceived but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. [1 Tim. 2:14]

18

copyright 2006 by Glenn Davis

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. [1 Cor. 15:22]

Adam was our common parent - the father of all mankind. In Adam the entire human race was on probation in Eden. It was a time of testing with Adam taking the test for everyone.

The two federal heads, Adam and Christ, made two different classes or categories of people. Each class is identified by their federal head, and each class receives their nature and destiny from that head. Adam sinned and so do we in him. His disobedience made sinners of everyone. Jesus obeyed for those who would follow Him. He died, rose again, and ascended into heaven for them. His obedience made those who follow Him righteous. Both our ruin [in Adam] and our redemption [in Christ] are understood in the concept of federal headship.

21. Do the words “federal headship” appear in the Bible? _______

22. There have been two federal heads: ___________ and Christ.

23. Adam represented the _____________ human race and Christ represented those whom the Father had given Him.

24. Adam’s disobedience made _______________ of everyone.

25. The obedience of Jesus made those who follow Him ________.

26. Both our ruin [in Adam] and our redemption [in Christ] are

understood in the concept of ______________________.

Some people object to federal headship by saying that it is unreasonable and unjust that God would punish us for Adam’s sin. The angels did not have a federal head. They stood or fell for themselves, but God choose to operate with human beings on the basis of federal headship. Because we fell in Adam, we can be redeemed in Christ. Redemption is only possible for those who can be represented by Christ. For fallen angels there is no redemption, no hope. Since they do not have a federal head, it is all over for them. In any case, such objections are pointless. The Bible teaches that federal headship is how God operates with human beings. That is that. Whether we like it or agree with it doesn’t matter and doesn’t change a thing.

19

copyright 2006 by Glenn Davis

Read Rom. 5:12-19.

Adam acted as the Federal Head and his action was imputed to the human race. God deals with mankind by representation. We are not treated like individual stalks of grain but like a tree with multiple branches with only one root. Destory the root and the tree dies. Adam in sinning destroyed the root and the rest of us died.

The character of a sinner is one who commits sin, but that is not what makes him a sinner. A person commits sin because he is a sinner, he does not become a sinner because he commits sin. It is important to see the difference. He is declared to be a sinner because he was “in” Adam when Adam sinned. Therefore, he is guilty of sin before he personally commits any sin. This is called original sin. It is the sin nature we are born with and it is directly under the judgment of God. We are legally declared sinners because of our relationship with Adam not for what we ourselves do. Adam acted for all of us and through him we are born with a sin nature. Our sin nature expresses itself by committing personal sins. By the way, no one is punished for Adam’s personal sins but only for the one sin he committed while representing the human race.

27. The angels ___________have a federal head.

28. Because we fell in Adam, we can be _____________ in Christ.

29. Adam acted as the Federal Head and his action was _________ to the human race.

30. A person commits sin because he is a ___________, he does not become a sinner because he commits sin.

31. Through Adam we are born with a sin ____________.

Evidences Of Federal HeadshipHow do we know that federal headship exists? How do we know

that it is the way God has chosen to operate with human beings?

1. The fact that sin is everywhere shows federal headship. Since sin is everywhere, it must have had a common source. The suffering and trouble of this world is because of Adam’s failure as our federal head or it has no reason. Because of federal headship we are all infected with sin and suffer for it. We are naturally the children of wrath, corrupt and going to destruction because of our representative’s sin. This is what the

apostles taught.

2. The fact there is a common judgment on mankind shows federal headship. We are treated as a unit. Death, decay, pain, and poverty are all part of the common human experience. Since all come under the same judgment of the Judge there must have been a common offense committed by a federal head.

3. The fact that representation is basic to human relationships shows federal headship. In the family, in business, and in nations the principle of representation is well established. Treaties by heads of countries apply to everyone in the country. If the Prime Minister of Canada [or any nation] declares war, we go to war, if he forbids trade with a certain nation then we can’t do business there, etc. It doesn’t matter whether we agree with his decision or not. He represents us and we are bound by his word.

Business is the same. The employer makes decisions regarding his business. The employees are affected by those decisions whether they agree with them or not. The representatives of a business can also sign contracts that the business must follow through on.

The father represents the family and so on. Our society could not exist without the principle of federal headship which we call representation.

32. The fact that sin is _______________ shows federal headship.

33. Because of federal headship we are all _____________ with sin and suffer for it.

34. The fact there is a common _________________ on mankind shows federal headship.

35. The fact that ________________________ is basic to human relationships shows federal headship.

4. The fact that the only other option would not work shows that federal headship was necessary. In the Garden of Eden we were “in” Adam. It was either this way of representation or each baby born would have to enter probation for himself. As soon as that baby committed one sin, it would be doomed for eternity. It would not matter how small the sin was; it would still sentence him to hell without any hope of redemption. If we are not represented in Adam, we cannot be represented in Christ.

God gave us every advantage in Adam. We were represented by a fully grown, fully intelligent man without any sin or any desire to sin. Actually, Adam was created with the desire to serve God. If Adam couldn’t do it, nobody could.

God can do no wrong; therefore, what He did was right. The fact we continually break of Covenant of Eden and disobey the law of God shows we agree with Adam. Every time we sin, we are jumping up and down shouting, “Adam, you made the right choice. I agree with you!” We can’t condemn Adam. We make the same wrong choice over and over again.

5. The fact that God has dealt on the principle of representation throughout history shows federal headship:

The descendants of Canaan were cursed because of the action of their parent [Gen. 9].

The Egyptians suffered plagues and died in the Red Sea because of Pharaoh’s stubbornness [Ex. 7-14].

The High Priest acted on behalf of the whole nation [Lev. 16:34].The king was held accountable for the actions of his subjects [2 Sam.

24]Plus many more examples.

6. Most importantly, the fact is Scripture teaches federal headship.

Write out and memorize Rom. 5:12 _________________________

Sin came by Adam, but we know Eve sinned first. She was equal to Adam as a human being, but it does not say by one woman sin entered. Eve was not the federal head. She did not represent the human race - Adam did.

Adam represented Eve as well as the rest of the human race. When Eve disobeyed by eating the fruit nothing happened. When Adam ate, the eyes of both of them were opened [Gen. 3:7]. The omission of Eve from the teaching of Romans 5 shows that Adam was the federal head and his sin is imputed to us.

Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (for until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of Him that was to come. But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace which is by one man Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offenses unto justification. For if by one man's offense death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” [Rom. 5:12-19]

The guilt of federal headship was imputed to us, but not our depraved nature which came as much from Eve as Adam. The ONE sin of Adam is imputed to us [or placed in our account], our sinful nature [depravity] is our inheritance from Adam and Eve as our parents. When Adam broke the Covenant of Eden he stopped being our federal head. From that time on he sinned for himself alone.

If God had prevented the Fall [Adam’s original sin], Adam, a mere human, would have the saviour and worshipped by his descendants. This honour is due only to the Lord Jesus Christ.

36. The fact that the only other _____________ would not work shows that federal headship was necessary.

37. God gave us every _________________ in Adam.

is our inheritance from Adam and Eve as our parents.

Consequences Of Federal HeadshipWhat are some of the things that happened because of Adam’s sin

while our federal head?

1. We became children of wrath and were cut off from God.

Among whom also we conducted ourselves in times past in the lust of our flesh (doing the things willed by the flesh and mind) and were by nature the children of wrath, just like the rest of them. [Eph. 2:3]

Being darkened in understanding being made a stranger to the life of God because of ignorance which is in them, because of the hardness of their heart. [Eph. 4:18]

Adam’s rebellion was voluntary out of his own changeable [mutable] and self-determined will. By eating the forbidden fruit he:

- broke the law of his being, violating his nature which had bound him in allegiance to God. He placed himself on the throne of his heart instead of God.

- treated the law of God with contempt. The law required perfect, continuous obedience to God but now self ruled.

- broke the Covenant by violating the law of God. He stood with his wife in sin rather than with God in righteousness.

2. Adam’s sin became the reason for our condemnation and judgment.

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. [Rom. 5:19]

Adam’s disobedience brought condemnation and the last Adam’s [Jesus] obedience brought justification. The first Adam’s disobedience is the legal ground for our condemnation. The misery and depravity in all of us shows our identification in Adam. The last Adam’s obedience is the legal ground for our justification.

Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. [Rom. 5:18-19]

42. We became children of __________ and were cut off from God.

43. Adam’s ___________ became the reason for our condemnation and judgment.

3. Adam’s sin made us all sinners [see Rom. 5:19 above]. The word “made” is a term which means we are all placed in the catagory or considered as sinners. It is not referring to our sin nature that we inherited from Adam. [We learn about our sin nature in other Scriptures.] We are now legally listed as sinners because of Adam’s action. As our representative, when Adam sinned, “sin” was written in our account book before God even though we had not yet been born. Every human being starts out with a sin account.

For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. [2 Cor. 5:21]

Christ was “made” sin. In other words, it was imputed or put into His account. Impute means to ascribe or to count as. Our sin was not imparted [i.e. given to Him] but it was imputed [i.e. legally transferred to His account. We started with a sin account; Jesus started with a righteousness account. At the cross our sin [if we are a Christian] was transferred into His account and His righteousness was transferred into our account. This is why we can now stand in the righteousness of Christ - it was imputed to our account!

Christ redeemed us from the law's curse being made a curse for us, for it is written cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. [Gal. 3:13]

Again we see there was no change in our Lord’s character. He did not become a sinner. Our sin and guilt was legally transferred to Him - it was imputed not imparted. The legal transference of our sins to Christ made Him responsible for our sins and He received the punishment we should have had.

Adam’s disobedience is put into the account of all human beings. We not only have a corrupt nature but also we are under the just condemnation of God.

Behold I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. [Ps. 51:5

The wicked are strangers to God from the womb; they go stray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. [Ps. 58:3]

Yea you did not hear; yea you did not know; from the time that your ear was not opened; for I knew that you would deal very deceitfully and were called a sinner from the womb. [Is. 48:8]

Your first father has sinned, and your teachers have sinned against me. [Is. 43:27]

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. [Eph. 2:3]

Bottom line: We are made sinners.

4. We all have personal guilt. Yes, we sinned in our representative but we are not guilty of Adam’s personal sin. We are guilty of the sins we commit. Adam, as our representative, made the Covenant on our behalf as the surety and sponsor of the human race, but we personally continually break the Covenant. This shows we agree with Adam’s action. Instead of humanistically objecting to the fact that Adam was our representative, we should, by grace, follow the example of Jesus in obeying God’s laws.

Ruined by the actions of another person, we are redeemed by the actions of another Person. The substitution of Christ for us stands on the foundation of federal headship. If what Adam did does not ruin us, what Christ did cannot save us.
