GURU PURNIMA MESSAGE

Very few understand that the moon has no light, just as the sun has got light, as stars have got light. There are so many stars that are so big. In comparison to the earth they are like footballs and the earth is like a pea, rai or a little black condiment. When the moon has no light, how does purnima (full-moon) occur? Even though the moon has no light, it has a reflecting power. When the moon circles the earth, our planet, a moment comes when the full sunlight falls upon the moon. As soon as the full sunlight falls upon the moon we call it the full-moon day. In Sanskrit language or Hindi language it is called purnima. It has got the reflecting light, therefore, when the sun shines fully, the moon is fully illuminated and it falls upon the earth. Even so is disciple in his relation to the Guru. When the disciple takes upon himself all the instructions of the Guru, all the commandments of the Guru (guru-ajna) and tries to live according to them, hundred percent, then the Guru would be like the sun and the disciple the full moon upon the full-moon day; because what the disciple gives is what he has got. Far away is a man of God-realisation. Therefore, God-realisation makes him above all gods, not only in Hinduism but also in Jainism and Buddhism. In Tibetan Buddhism fully illumined masters fly in the air. But a disciple can take what he wants. He will not be able to take more than what his capacity is. But whatever it is, that is quite full for him, quite complete for him for his spiritual progress and sadhana, svadhyaya, dhyan, dharana. What he has received from the Guru, whatever his instructions, that will give him spiritual realisation in this very life, if he lives one hundred percent upon the Guru’s Jnana-upadesh, Guru’s wisdom teachings. Therefore to bring home this truth, every year, we have the holy festival of Guru Purnima. The disciple is like the moon upon a full-moon day who completely reflects Guru’s teachings, guru-upadesh. It is to remind us this fact again and again this holy festival is observed annually, every twelve months. Guru Purnima comes in order to make us remember this truth. It is in order to bring home the teachings and the tattva. Upon Guru Purnima the disciple must ponder deeply over his relationship to the Guru, spiritual relationship. This is my message for Guru Purnima

GURU PURNIMA(H.H.SRI SWAMI SIVANANDAJI MAHARAJ)

Guru Purnima is a day pregnant with

deep significance and important import for humanity today. To

the orthodox Hindu, it implies a reverent worship of the spiritual preceptor and the commencement of a serious study of the scriptures. Guru Purnima falls on the full-moon day of the month of Ashada. Sannyasins stop their wanderings and take up a fixed abode on the sacred day to commence a four-month period of intense study and meditation.

It is a peculiar genius of Hinduism to have made all personalities, all celebrations, sacred places and sacred days to stand for and vividly represent some lofty ideal. Guru Purnima is not an exception. The very day is an indication of the ideal which you are to attain. Purnima or the full moon is that stage when the moon receives to the fullest extent the dazzling light of the sun and reflects it perfectly. It is at the zenith of its luminosity. Now the moon is believed to have emanated from the mind portion of the Cosmic Being or the Purusha—chandrama manaso jathah---thus runs the Purusha-sukta. The sun is always regarded by the devout Hindu to be a visible representative of the Deity or Paramatman. Thus it is this supreme ideal of fully reflecting the divine splendor that is aimed at through the surrender to and worship of the spiritual guide and the study of and meditation upon the truths of the scriptures that Guru Purnima implies. The human mind, being thoroughly purified through the service of the Guru and assimilation of scriptures, becomes perfectly serene and calm and then faithfully reflects the Atman even as the moon during Purnima. The mind of man has

the closest interconnection with the moon.Vividly keep before your mind this spiritual significance of Guru Purnima. Just as the wandering Sannyasin does, even so let your mind cease its wandering in the diverse pathways of this world of delusion. Let it get fixed upon a single object or Lakshya. Plunge in Sadhana from today.

Even as the individual, the race and the nation too have to put into practice this ideal. It is failure to do this that has brought the entire humanity today on the verge of self-destruction. To the race the Guru is represented by the entire galaxy of saints and sages, the holy men and the men of God that have graced and illumined the centuries and generations past as well as present. The sum total of these saints and their spiritual hierarchy is the Guru for the race. The entire range of their life-redeeming teachings constitutes the Guru Vakya or the Guru Upadesh for the race. This Guru and this Upadesh have been forgotten by the racial mind, nay, it has become deliberately neglected and set aside . The saints and their teachings have been shelved away as archaic antiquities. Their voice of Truth, universal love, unity and brotherhood have become drowned by the rush and uproar of a scientific age. The mind of a man is thoroughly agitated and tossed about by the forces of commercial greed and materialistic power . Such a mind can hardly reflect the splendor and radiance of the Atman . The true spirit of Guru Purnima alone can save the humanity from dangerous perversions of secular science.

The human race must settle down now for a sincere hearing of and reflection over the admonitions of the great sages and the teachers of the world. It is Supreme Guru

of Gurus, the almighty being that speaks and works through these spiritual men of God. Let the humanity make up for past neglect and hearken with earnestness and care to this universal Gurupadesh. Then indeed the real Divine Purnima will cast its soft radiance of peace and bliss upon this earth. Then it is that humanity will attain its Purnima and perfectly reflect the radiant dazzling lights of the Supreme Divine Being, who is in truth the Sun of Suns.

Blessed selves! Study therefore with diligence and Bhava the lives of the great ones. Again and again recall their spiritual teachings. Try to emulate them. Walk in their footsteps. Follow their lofty Upadesh and teachings. Daily read some elevating scripture without fail . Pray to the Supreme,

Guru Bhagwan Veda Vyasa and begin spiritual Sadhana. Do not postpone. Time flies, life shortens rapidly. Death may come at any moment. Hasten the advent of bright Purnima in your lives. To live in the light of Guru’s teachings, to faithfully become the very embodiment of his Upadesh is a grand Gurudakshina for him.

May this sacred land pay this homage to its Guru and attain the Purnima of her spiritual splendour so that she may once again scatter the soft radiance of Atmic Light upon all the nations of the world! May the entire humanity soon be illuminated with the Jyoti of a Purna Chandrodaya of Indian Spirituality!! All glory to the Brahma Vidya Gurus!!!

If you revere some being, you would also wish to carry out his instructions and orders, to walk the way that he wants you to walk, the way that he has shown by his teachings as well as by his living. To live fully in accordance with, and not contrary to his will, would be the genuine manner of showing reverence in a practical way.

The devotee who has devotion and reverence for God does this. He tries his level best to live his life in accordance with the will of God; he does not go contrary to the will of God. Reverence and devotion, and contrariness to His will cannot co-exist; they cannot both exist at the same time in the same person. If there is reverence, there is obedience. If there is reverence, there is the attempt to carry out His will in thought, word and deed. If we say that we revere and do not do this, then it means that there is something wrong. There is an essential inner contradiction.

Similarly with the guru. Our life should be a guru-oriented life. Our life should be a life of harmony with his will and teachings. That would be, therefore, the way we express our reverence for the guru. And that we should do daily. We should live a guru-oriented life in close accordance with his teachings to us, not only daily but hourly from morning till night. We must be aware that this orientation in our life is one of the essential ingredients of the discipleship. We may even say that it is the essence of discipleship. Then indeed all blessings will be ours. Then indeed, day by day, we will proceed and progress towards the Goal. The guru’s teachings will be fulfillment in the disciple’s living, and all blessedness will follow.

To this end we must sincerely, earnestly and diligently strive without ceasing. Our supreme good and highest welfare lies in this. May the divine grace of the Supreme and the benedictions of the guru enable us to do so and live so!

ri Krishna Janmashtami or the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth Divine Incarnation, falls on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of

Bhadrapada (August-September). Lord Krishna was born at midnight. A 24-hour fast is observed on this day, which is broken at midnight. Temples are decorated for the occasion. Kirtans are held, bells are rung, conch is blown, Stotras (hymns) are recited in praise of Lord Krishna, special Melas (festival gatherings) are held at this time. On the holy Janmashtami day, ladies decorate their houses beautifully, ready to welcome the Lord. They prepare various sweetmeats and offer them and also butter (which was Krishna’s favourite) to the Lord. From the doorway to the inner meditation or Puja-room, they mark the ground of their

house with a child’s footprints (with the aid of some flour mixed with water) to create the feeling in them that the Lord’s own feet have made the mark. They treat the day as one of very great rejoicing. There is recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam, singing and praying everywhere.

Lord Krishna was the highest incarnation of the great Lord Vishnu. He was the unique and crowning incarnation of all. Sri Krishna was the Purna Avatara with all the Sixteen Kalas or rays. The Avatara comes to reveal the divine nature in man and makes him rise above the petty materialistic life of passion and egoism. Greatest manifestations are called Avataras proper. Avesha, Amsha (partial), Kala (ray) Avataras, Rishis, Munis, Prophets, Messiahs, Sons of God,

SRI KRISHNAJANMASHTAMI(H.H. SRI SWAMI SIVANANDAJI MAHARAJ)

Messengers of God are minor manifestations. The Avataras usually come with their particular or favourite groups or companions. Lord Rama came with Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna. Lord Krishna came with Balarama, Devas and Rishis. Avataras appear for special reasons in special circumstances. Whenever there is much unrighteousness, whenever confusion and disorder set in on account of unrighteousness and baffle the well-ordered progress of the people, whenever the balance of human society is upset by selfish, ruthless and cruel beings, whenever irreligion and Adharma (unrighteousness) prevail, whenever the foundations of social organisations are undermined, Avataras appear, in order to establish Dharma and to restore peace. Avatara is the descent of God for the ascent of man.

Lord Krishna was a noble scion of the illustrious Yadava dynasty. He was a world-teacher. He was a lover of humanity. His divine form holds the heart of the world captive even today. Worship of Sri Krishna has been practiced

in Bharatavarsha since ancient times. It is a part of the Veda itself. It is not a new cult. The Brahma and Padma Puranas have devoted several chapters to Sri Krishna Charitra. Brahmavaivarta, Vishnu, and Bhagavata Puranas have devoted whole sections and books to the descriptions of Sri Krishna Charitra or life. The scriptures have not recorded any life more full, more intense, more sublime, more grand than His life and work. Lord Krishna was great in knowledge, great in emotion, great in action, all together. Though Lord Krishna appeared in human form, he had an Aprakritika, divine body. He virtually did not take any birth nor did He die. He appeared and disappeared through His Yoga Maya. This is a secret, known only to His devotees, Yogis and sages.

Lord Krishna has played various parts brilliantly during His sojourn in the world. He was an excellent statesman, a Karma Yogin par excellence, a staunch upholder of Dharma, righteousness. He was a master-musician and he gave lessons to Narada himself in the art of playing Vina. The music of His flute thrilled the hearts of Gopis and Gopas and all those who heard it. He taught the supreme truths of yoga, Bhakti and Vendanta to Arjuna and Uddhava. Krishna had mastery over the sixty-four fine arts and that is why He is regarded as an Avatara with sixteen Kalas. He can be taken to embody all the highest ideals of man, and He led an ideal life of a householder to teach humanity.Lord Krishna’s teachings to Arjuna on the eve of the Mahabharata war were recorded as the Song Celestial or Srimad Bhagavad Gita by Sage Vyasa for the benefit of humanity at large. The world is under a great debt to Sage Vyasa who presented the Celestial Song to mankind for their daily conduct of life, spiritual uplift and ultimate realization of the Supreme truth.

The teaching of Lord Krishna is an ancient solution to modern problems, too. The problems that face the human being are essentially the same in all periods of time, though they appear in different garbs at different times. The greatness of the Gita lies in that it is an intergral gospel, a solution to all problems, in all their aspects, at all times, and in all places. The Gita was pronounced by the integral person, Krishna, who represented the true Being; the Gita was meant to be an instruction to Arjuna, who represented the true man. The problems that faced Arjuna face mankind in general; the Gita is the answer to the universal question of life as a whole. Social problems, political problems and individual problems, relating to different conditions of life,--physical, intellectual and spiritual,--are all offshoots of certain

fundamental difficulties which appear to make existence a scene of acute restlessness and grief. Peace, abundance and happiness seem to be the factors which control the value of life; the lack of these becomes the source of a severe want and a problem; the continuous presence of these seems to overcome all forms of sorrow. The basic error, which the Gita points out that man has commited, is the absence of the knowledge of the main cause of all kinds of problems that obstruct the establishment of oneself in continuous, ceaseless satisfaction. The various categories of the constitution of the universe enumerated by the Gita point to the fact that the Soul of the universe is not what is perceived by man through his senses or thought of by his mind, but a knowledge transcending these. The problems and difficulties arise in objectivating the true Subject; the God within man, i.e., in being untrue to one’s real Self. In order to know the world fully, the knower must be independent of the laws governing the world; else complete knowledge would be impossible. One whose knowledge is controlled by external phenomena can never have knowledge of them. The impulse for absolute knowledge guarantees the possibility of such a knowledge. This shows the knower is superior to the known to such an extent that the known loses its value of being in the light of absoluteness of the knower. The Bhagavad Gita stresses the existence of this state of the Supreme Being to the exclusion of everything else, in the statement, ‘other than Me, nothing is.’

To try to find absolute perfection in the world, therefore, is to attempt the impossible; for that is possible only in ‘attaining Me’ (in the words of Krishna), in attaining, rather in being, the absolute knower whose knowledge is not of anything except himself. Devotion is the only means of attaining Lord Krishna. When love is turned towards Sri Krishna, man is freed from the bondage of the world.

Page 7: Cover - 30-6-14 - 6th proofsivananda.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/DivineMessenger_Q2_2014.pdf · Vyasa Puja; Sri Guru Puja 17 Thu Dakshinayana Begins (08.37a.m.) Sri Hanuman

5

The way of life to be lived in order to reach absolute perfection is pointed out by the Lord Himself in the Gita. It is the calming of the passions, of the creative will, the cessation of all psychic function, that leads to a merging of oneself in Self-consciousness, where alone is freedom from the expression of life in a multifarious universe, where alone is thorough and unlimited perfection, and which alone is real knowledge, true

wisdom. The world is a special mode of the conception and perception of the Absolute by the functions of ideation or creative imagining. The cessation of such functions is

liberation from all problems and possession of a true life of infinite peace. This is the supreme word of the Lord to all.

The Teachings given by Lord Krishna to Uddhava on the eve of His departure from this world are wonderful. He gives instructions on a variety of subjects. But the one ringing note is: “See Me in everything. Surrender to Me. Do all actions for My sake. Cut off all sorts of attachments. Have perfect unswerving devotion to me Sing, My glories.”

The birthdays or Jayantis are celebrated only to remind the human mind to follow the footsteps and teachings of Avataras or incarnations, saints and sages. On the auspicious day of Sri Krishna Jayanti let us sing His Name ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaya’, reflect on His teachings and put them into practice in our day to day life.

May His blessings be upon you all!

DURGA—LAKSHMI—SARASVATI

The Divine Mother is everywhere triple. She is endowed with the three Gunas, viz., Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. She manifests as Will or Iccha-sakti, Action or Kriya-sakti, and Knowledge or Jnana-sakti. She is Brahma-sakti (Sarasvati) in conjunction with Brahma, Vishnu – sakti (Lakshmi) in conjunction with Lord Vishnu, Siva-sakti (Mahakali or Durga) in conjunction with Lord Siva.

Sarasvati is cosmic intelligence, cosmic consciousness, cosmic knowledge. Lakshmi does not mean mere material wealth like gold, cattle, etc. All kinds of prosperity, glory, magnificence, joy, exaltation, or greatness come under Lakshmi. Appaya Dikshitar calls even the final Liberation as Moksha-samrajya-lakshmi. Mahakali is the transformative power of Divinity, the power that dissolves multiplicity in unity.

The Devi assumes many aspects according to the task to be performed by Her—sometimes sweet and tender, and at others, terrible devouring. But She is always kind and gracious to Her devotees. Arjuna , the Pandava hero, worshipped the Goddess before starting the fight against the evil-minded Kauravas. Sri Rama worshipped Durga at the time of the fight with Ravana, to invoke Her aid in the war. He fought and won through Her grace.

Meaning: “O Lord Vinayaka, the remover of all obstacles, the son of Lord Siva, with a form which is very short, with mouse as Thy vehicle, with sweet pudding in hand, with wide ears and long hanging trunk, I prostrate at Thy lotus-like feet.”

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular of Hindu festivals. This is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is the day most sacred to Lord Ganesha. It falls on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada (August-September). It is observed throughout India, as well as by devoted Hindus in all parts of the world.

Clay figures of the Diety are made and, after being worshipped for two to ten days, are thrown into the river.

Lord Ganesha is the elephant-headed God. He is worshipped first in any kind of prayer. His names are repeated first before any auspicious work is begun, before any kind of worship is begun.

He is the Lord of power and wisdom. He is the eldest son of Lord Siva, and the elder brother of Skanda or Kartikeya. He is the energy of Lord Siva, so he is called the son of Shankar and Umadevi. By invoking and worshipping Lord Ganesha, mothers hope to earn for their sons His sterling virtues.

Lord Siva made His son worthy of worship at the beginning of all undertakings, marriages, expeditions, studies, etc. He

Ganesh ChaturthiMushikavaahana modaka hasta,

Chaamara karna vilambita sutra,Vaamana roopa maheshwara putra, Vighna vinaayaka paada Namaste.

ordained that the annual worship of Lord Ganesha should take place on the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada (August-september).

Without the blessings and Grace of Lord Ganesha, nothing whatsoever can be achieved. No action can be undertaken without His support.

Lord Ganesha is an embodiment of wisdom and bliss. He is the Lord of Brahmacharins. He is foremost amongst

the celibates.

Lord Ganesha has as His vehicle a mouse. He is the presiding Deity of the Muladhara Chakra, the psychic centre in the body in which the Kundalini Shakti resides.

Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles on the

path of the spiritual aspirant, and bestows upon him wordly

as well as spiritual success. So He is called Vigna Vinayaka. His Bija Akshara (root syllable) is Gung, pronounced to rhyme with the word ”sung”. He is the Lord of Peace.

Lord Ganesha represents the Pranava (Om), which is the chief Mantra among the Hindus. Nothing can be done without uttering it. This explains the practice of invoking Lord Ganesha before beginning any rite or undertaking any project. His two feet represent the power of knowledge and the power of action. The elephant is significant, in that it is the only figure in nature that has the form of the symbol for Om.

Page 9: Cover - 30-6-14 - 6th proofsivananda.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/DivineMessenger_Q2_2014.pdf · Vyasa Puja; Sri Guru Puja 17 Thu Dakshinayana Begins (08.37a.m.) Sri Hanuman

7

Complete conquest of egoism is the significance of riding on a mouse. The holding of the ankusha represents His rulership of the world. It is the emblem of divine royalty. Lord Ganesha is the first God. Riding a mouse (one of nature’s smallest creatures) and having the head of an elephant (the biggest of all animals), denotes that Lord Ganesha is the creator of all creatures. Elephants are wise animals; this indicates that Lord Ganesha is an embodiment of wisdom. It denotes the process of evolution also—the mouse gradually evolving into an elephant and eventually becoming a man. This is why Lord Ganesha has a human body, an elephant’s head, and a mouse as His vehicle. This is the philosophy of His symbolic form. The Vaishnavites also worship Lord Ganesha. They have given Him the name of Tumbikkai Alwar, which means the “Divinity with the proboscis” (the trunk of an elephant).

Lord Ganesha’s two powers are the Kundalini, and the Vallabha or power of love.

He is very fond of sweet pudding or balls of rice flour with a sweet core. On one of His birthdays He was proceeding from house to house accepting the offerings of sweet puddings. Having eaten a good number of these, He set out on His mouse at night. Suddenly the mouse stumbled—it had seen a snake and became frightened—with the result that Ganesha fell down. His stomach burst open and all the sweet puddings came out. But Ganesha stuffed them back into His

stomach and, catching hold of the snake, tied it around His

belly.

Witnessing this, the moon laughed heartily.

This unseemly attitude of the moon annoyed

Ganesha greatly. So he pulled out one of His tusks and hurled it against the moon, and cursed that no one should look at the moon on the Ganesh Chaturthi day; if anyone does, he will surely earn a bad name, censure or ill-repute. However, if by mistake someone does happen to look at the moon on this day then the only way he could be freed from the curse would be by repeating or listening to the story of how Lord Krishna cleared His character regarding the Syamantaka jewel. This story is quoted in the Bhagavatam.

On the Ganesh Chaturthi day, meditate early in the morning, during the Brahmamuhurta period, on the stories connected with Lord Ganesha. Then, after having your bath, visit the temple and perform the prayers of Lord Ganesha. Offer him some coconut and sweet pudding. Pray with faith and devotion that He may remove all the obstacles you experience on the spiritual path. Worship Him at home, too. You can get the assistance of a pundit. Have an image of Lord Ganesha in your house. Feel His Presence in it.

Remember not to look at the moon on that day as it behaved unbecomingly towards the Lord. This really means avoiding from this very day the company of all those who have no faith in God, and who deride God, the Guru and religion.

Take fresh spiritual resolves and pray sincerely to Lord Ganesha for inner spiritual strength to attain success in all your undertakings.

May all the blessings of Sri Ganesha be upon you all! May He remove all the obstacles that stand in your spiritual path! May He bestow on you all material prosperity as well as liberation!

Puranas are sacred sricptures through which the wise seers of ancient times have tried to give us the precious treasures of wisdom, inspiration and guidance. They are holy books into which great sages have packed in deep facts about human life and secret of success herein and hereafter. Thus these Puranas, the holy repositories of an abundance of spiritual knowledge, the sacred treasure-house of vast wealth of vital wisdom of life, have ever exerted a profound influence upon the progress and development of the glorious culture and civilization of India. The Puranas are the frame work into which have been filled the knowledge of the ways and means of conquering man’s lower nature, achieving integral perfection and attaining the glorious goal of a sublime Divine Consciousness. All these they have done through the medium of didactic stories, narratives of deep esoteric significance and symbolism and rich allegory. Knowing well that basically a Hindu is religious in temperament and essentially a being of faith, these sages wove the fabric of such allegory and symbolic narrative around some popular, powerful and permanent aspect of Divinity or a great renowned Rishi. This Divine personality usually forms the central figure of each particular Purana. You have therefore the Siva Purana, the Vishnu Purana, Skanda Purana, the Varaha Purana, the Matsya Purana, the Markandeya Purana, Narada Purana, etc. An important portion of the Markandeya Purana consists of the renowned Devi Mahatmya which glorifies Divinity in its aspect of Sakti or Devi. It is comprised of 700 verses and hence it is also known as Devi Sapta Shati. And here you have a brief summary containing the very essence of this great scripture of Devi Mahatmya.

Suratha , a king of the solar race, has been defeated by his enemies and forced to flee his capital. He is wandering in exile in a forest. Here he meets a Vaisya merchant named Samadhi who is in a similar predicament, having lost everything reduced to penury and abandoned by his own wife and children. Both the king and

the Vaisya merchant are dejected and

their thoughts are constantly going back to their family,

possessions and property, due to attachment. They fall into conversation and are puzzled as to why their thoughts are again and again dragged towards and centered upon those very persons, things and places whence so much sorrow and pain have come upon them. To solve this vexing problem they approach a sage dwelling in that forest. In answer to their query, the sage tells them that their minds behave in this manner due to the mysterious power of Divine Sakti, Maha Maya. The king and the merchant, --Suratha and Samadhi,--are eager to know more about this Divine Sakti, Maha Maya, and her Lilas and glory; and in answer, the sage narrates Devi Mahatmya; and the narrative unfolds thus: Before the dawn of creation, at the commencement of the Kalpa when Lord Maha Vishnu is reposing upon the bosom of the vast undifferentiated ocean, two terrible Asuras,--Madhu and Kaitabha,--arise out of His Cosmic Being. They are terrible. They are dangerous and having perceived Brahma they set upon him to destroy him. Threatened by these powerful Asuras and menaced by their malevolent motive, in great fear Brahma invokes the supreme, indescribable Divine Power, the Primordial Power, Para

Sakti or Adi Sakti and implores her merciful intervention. The Divine Mother appears and awakens Lord Narayana from his Cosmic slumber, The Lord engages Madhu and Kaithaba, the two Asuras in battle and destroys them both. Thus ends the first phase of the narrative.

All the Gods and the celestials hail the Mother with cries of victory. Mahishasura, a powerful demon, has overcome all the Devas and subjugated them. He is terrorizing the three worlds. He is enraged to hear the Devas crying victory unto the Mother. He thinks that he alone is supreme. He is arrogant in the extreme. He will tolerate no other being to question his power. Therefore, he decides to make war upon the Divine Sakti whom the Devas are hailing. He confronts the Mother with drawn weapons. There ensues a terrible fight. Bitter is the struggle. The Asura fights from all the elements. He takes fearful forms. But darkness cannot stand before light. The Divine Power is the Supreme Power. Truth always triumphs. Victory is to the Supreme Reality. Devi slays the Asura. The Divine overcomes the undivine. Thus ends the second phase.

The Divine Mother whose glory shines and dazzles in the three worlds is seated in the Himalayan region in the form of Saila Putri. At this time Sumbha and Nisumbha, two powerful Asuras, hold absolute sway over all the worlds. They have subjugated all the Devas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras and the like. They have rested and got into their possessions all the best of things like the celestial Airavata, Uchchairavas, Kamadhenu, Kalpakavriksha and the Chintamani. They are intoxicated with the pride of their prowess and their conquests. Their desire is insatiable. They want to possess more and ever more. Two Dutas from

the Durbar of the Powerful Asura brothers behold the Divine Mother and decide that she should come into the possession of their royal Masters. They inform the Asura Sumbha of their find. Sumbha sends at once a royal messenger to bring Devi to his court. Devi says she can come only to one who conquers her in combat. She refuses to go with the messenger. The messenger conveys the news to Sumbha. He blazes with anger and sends Dhumralochana. Dhumralochana tries to lay his hands upon Divine Sakti. Devi with a single Humkar of anger reduces him to ashes. He is consumed in the flames of Devi’s wrath. Next the Asura, Raktabija, comes to fight. He is an Asura of extraordinary magical powers. Moreover, he is in possession of a boon by which whenever a drop of his blood falls on the earth immediately a new Asura springs upon therefrom. So every time the Devi wounds him and spills the blood, countless powerful Asuras spring anew and fill the field of battle. Devi invokes Kali, the terrible dark-hued deity. All powerful Kali slays the Asura Raktabija, sucking in with her terrible outspread tongue the Asura’s blood more quickly that it can flow out of his wounds. Kali sees that his blood never reaches the earth. Thus, the Asura Raktabija is destroyed by the Devi. Sumbha and Nisumbha now confront the Devi. A great battle ensues. Nisumbha is killed and ultimately Devi with her trident deals the death blow to Sumbha also. The undivine forces are thus totally annihilated. The Divine rules supreme. Vidya has overcome Avidya. Light has conquered darkness. Knowledge shines with the destruction of ignorance. Joy, bliss and immortality reign supreme. The Divine Mother s h i n e s in glorious triumph. All hail to Maha Sakti. Glory be to the Mother.

A GREEDY DOGO Children of Divinity!Adorations. Om Namah Sivaya.

Today I wish to tell you the story of a greedy dog. Once there was a greedy dog. He had no food for some days. One day luckily, he got a piece of meat. With it he went by the side of a pond, to eat it with relish. But as he looked at the water he found his own shadow in it. He thought that another dog had come with a piece of meat in his mouth. As he was greedy he thought to snatch that meat also, so that he could have his belly full with two pieces. He jumped into the water to snatch away the other one. But as he jumped, his own meat fell from his mouth into the water, and was lost. Thus, he being too greedy lost his own meat. Do not be greedy. If you are greedy you will have to suffer. Nobody will like you. Rather share what you have with others. Then everybody will love you. God gives more to him who gives his share to others.

May God bless you. May you be happy. May you all be loved by all.- Sivananda.

LINCOLN’S COMPASSION LINCOLN, the boy, was tender; Lincoln, the youth was sympathetic; and

Lincoln, the man, was merciful. History abounds with the humaneness of this great soul, and his life proves that humanity and humaneness go hand in hand.

Lincoln was the friend of every creature of fur and feather, and we are told that he was especially devoted to his dog Honey. He found this dog one very hot day when he was on his way to the old mill with a sack of meal to be ground. The dog had a broken leg and had been abandoned by its owner. Leaving the heavy sack of meal for the time being, Lincoln picked up the little dog and carried him to a nearby spring, where he bathed the injured leg and gave him fresh water to drink. Then he took him home and put the leg in a splint and made a nice, clean bed for him in a shady place. The two became devoted friends.

Honey accompanied Lincoln on all his errands and would stand by patiently until each task was completed. They would go blithely home through the woods together, Lincoln whistling a merry tune and the dog running back and forth in a perfect frenzy of joy.One time, when they were walking out together, Lincoln got caught in a cave between two rocks. He could not free himself, and Honey sensing danger, ran home and barked so loudly and furiously that a search party at once accompanied him to the cave and his master was rescued.

Whenever Honey did wrong, Lincoln would reprove him kindly and gently, for he realized that animals, like human beings, often do wrong because they do not know any better, and that gentle words and kindness will correct the fault when harsh words and accusations fail. Honey trusted and loved his master because of his tender kindness, and Lincoln in turn prayed each night that God would make Honey a good dog.

Lincoln’s childlike prayer had an irresistible appeal—“God help mother, help father, help sister, help everybody; help me to read and write. Watch over Honey and make him a good dog, and keep us all from getting lost in the wilderness. Amen.”

The main causes that impair good health are as follows: (1) Pessimistic thoughts, (2) Fear of disease, (3) Lack of proper food, (4) Overwork, (5) Working late at night, (6) Various kinds of anxieties and worries.

Pessimistic Thoughts: It is useless to harbour pessimistic thoughts, because the Almighty Lord has endowed man with the faculty of reasoning and the power of rising superior to all undesirable elements and tiding over uncongenial circumstances. Pessimistic thoughts not only make a man miserable and helpless, but have also a very adverse effect upon his mind and body and thus impair his health. He should always read inspiring things that cheer him up and pour life into his being, and also follow footsteps of those who have triumphed over all trying circumstances. He should study the teachings of Sri Sankara, Dattatreya and Vasishta.

Fear of Disease: God is always good and kind to one and all. What He does, He does always for good. A man learns more by experience than by mere precepts, and hence God sends difficulties to give lessons to mankind. The duty of man is, therefore, to face difficulties boldly and perform his duties rightly. We are liable to suffering much from disease if we entertain fear of them. If we are bold enough, disease can do us no harm.

Lack of proper kind of food: Proper kind of food is a hard problem for the poor and the middle class men. The only way is to find out a solution to get the utmost benefit through the food which is available within their scanty means. For this purpose one should read literature on economic and nutritious food and arrange one’s diet accordingly. There are good books on this subject in vernacular languages so, one need not go in for costly

CHIEF CAUSES THAT IMPAIR GOOD HEALTH

English books on the subject.Overwork: One should observe regularity in all one’s duties and work which one has to perform. Wasting time for many days and working hard for a few days to make up puts a strain on the functions of the body; and heartache, dizziness and constipation are the results. One should always manage to take a little rest for a few minutes in the interval of his various kinds of work and business. Working late hours at night can be avoided if a man manages to work till 10-11 P.M. and again after 3 A.M. in the morning hours. This method of work is far better and healthier than working till 1 or 2 A.M. in the night.

Worries and Anxieties: They are very troublesome, and it is a Herculean task to overcome them. A man should try to meet them boldly and confidently, as within his power to do so. The best way to tide over them is to have full faith in God and His goodness. One should read the lives of saints and Bhaktas. They tell us that God sends these difficulties to test us and to purify our Karmas or actions in the previous life. All Scriptures show that even those whom God Almighty loved most were not free from cares and anxieties.

The difficulties and anxieties arising from poverty, lack of food, clothing and shelter, were shared by many a devotee of God. Even Hanuman, who was most beloved of Rama, had to face many difficulties even in doing Sri Ramji’s work, i,e., search for Sita. There is no other royal road to tide over them than to rely upon God and bear the natural consequences, keeping in mind that only Truth succeeds in the end. A person who is really devoted to the Lord never fears any difficulty. He finds God’s Grace even in calamities which he has to suffer.
