MESSAGE FROM YOUR MANAGER

Mistake #1. Not Getting OrganizedWrite down a game plan to help you prioritize and stay on task. “Start with your least favorite rooms, like the kitchen and bathrooms, which typically take the most work,” says Meg Roberts, president of Molly Maid, a national residential cleaning service. Then, gather your supplies in a bucket and carry them with you from room to room so you don’t waste time running back to the cleaning closet.

Mistake #2. Doing the brunt of the work by yourself can lead to a long day and sore muscles. Delegate simple tasks, such as dusting, shaking out rugs, and clearing clutter to children. Call on teenagers and your husband to do some heavy lifting, such as moving furniture or cleaning the garage.

If you live by yourself, invite a good friend over so you can chat and drink coffee between tasks. If your friend also lives alone, offer to visit while she’s cleaning. “Don’t look at the work as chores but rather as exercise that you’ll get,” says Roberts. She recommends turning the afternoon into a workout by doing walking lunges as you move between rooms.

Mistake #3. Cleaning often takes a long time because people tend to use the wrong tools, says Debra Johnson, training manager for Merry Maids, a national residential cleaning compa-ny. She suggests stocking up on four must-haves: microfiber cloths, steam, extension wand, anda vacuum with attachments. “While other cloths push dust around, microfiber grabs and removes dust,”

she says. Johnson also recommends steam, especially on floors, as steam requires no chemicals or products

and helps surfaces stay cleaner longer. Meanwhile, an extension wand helps you reach high ceilings and hanging light fixtures, while a vacuum with attachments allows you to clean upholstery and tight spaces.

Mistake #4. To lighten the load, follow a few simple tips from Roberts. First, dust surfaces with a microfiber cloth so you don’t have to use cleaning solution. When cleaning tubs and sinks, apply the cleaning solution and let it soak for 10 minutes before wiping the surface. Remove baked-on food in your microwave by filling a glass with water and heating the liquid on high for one minute; the steam will loosen stains, making it easier to clean. To ease toilet-bowl scrubbing, drop two Polident denture-cleaning tablets in the bowl and let fizz for 10 minutes.

Mistake #5. Overlooking Grimy Spots. Remove baskets and debris from the bottom of the dishwasher. Spray a water and vinegar solution onto a cleaning cloth or clean sponge to wipe down the inside of the door and top and bottom racks. Run the empty machine on its highest temperature setting without detergent for a thorough rinse.

Window blinds: Shut blinds and use a microfiber cloth to dust them. Close blinds in opposite direction for a quick, complete wipe-down.

Trash cans: Remove the bag and sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of

the can before adding about two inches of water. Allow the mixture to sit and then swish it with clean water. Wipe down the sides and rinse. Dry it with an old towel or let air dry.

“Most people fail to look up,” adds Johnson. Search for cobwebs in corners, around fireplaces, on top of lampshades, and between windows. Dust can also collect on ceiling fans, especially if you never turn them off, so clean each blade. Mistake #6. Continuing to Use the Same Dirty Cloth. If you wonder why you have streaks on surfaces, blame a soiled cloth. Keep a stack of clean cloths nearby and switch them out frequently, says Johnson. But you don’t need piles of microfiber cloths, as you can clean them. Just rinse in clean water and wring out. If you’re dusting, use a dry microfiber; then hold it inside a garbage bag and shake it to remove the dust. Mistake #7. Waiting Until Spring. “Incorporating easy tricks into your daily and weekly routines can make maintenance easier,” says Robert. Try putting a squeegee in the shower and run the tool over the walls to minimize build-up. Line bathroom and bedroom trashcans with plastic shopping bags to reduce sticky residue. Ask family members to spend five to 10 minutes each night putting away clothes, toys, shoes, and mail. “By keeping clutter to a minimum, you’ll spend less time preparing to clean,” she says. Finally, don’t make cleaning a weekly or bi-weekly chore. Spread tasks throughout the week, tackling one room at a time.

Saint Patrick's DayBy Dave Collett

St. Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. He was born in the fourth century and is famous for bringing Christianity into Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day is a very well known Irish national holiday, which is celebrated not only in Ireland but all around the world. It falls on the 17th of March.

History of St. PatrickSt. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in the late fourth century. Until the age of 16, he thought of himself as a pagan. He was kidnapped and sold as a slave at this age by Irish marauders. It was during this capture that he turned to God.

He managed to escape after being a slave for six years and then studied in a monastery in Gaul for 12 years. This was when he knew that his ‘calling’ was to try and convert all the pagans in Ireland to Christianity.

St. Patrick went around Ireland found-ing monasteries and successfully converting people to Christianity. The Celtic Druids were very unhappy with him and tried to arrest him several times but he always managed to escape.

After 30 years of being a missionary in Ireland, he finally settled down in a place called County Down. He died on the 17th of March, AD 461.

Legend and FolkloreShamrocks, leprechauns and the blarney stone are associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Shamrocks are three-leaved clovers found growing in patches on grass. You are thought to be lucky if you find a four-leaved clover, so do keep it if you ever come across one!

Leprechauns are little Irish fairies, and they are thought to work as shoe-makers for other fairies. The Irish say that if a leprechaun is caught by a human, he will reveal where he hides his pot of gold. On this day, pictures of shamrocks and leprechauns are hung everywhere. Some people even dress up as lepre-chauns complete with their big green hats!

The village of Blarney is situated northwest of the Irish city of Cork. Blarney comes from the Irish word ‘An blarna’, meaning the plain. Blarney Castle is a very famous castle in this village and is 90 feet tall. The world famous Blarney Stone is on the top story. It is said that if one kisses this stone, one will be given the gift of eloquence, meaning to have beautiful

speaking abilities. Nowadays, the word blarney means the ability to influence and coax with fair words and soft speech without offending.

What Do People Do on St. Patrick’s Day?St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated world-wide with people dancing and singing in Irish pubs, watching the St. Patrick’s Day parade, drinking ‘green’ beer, wearing green clothes and just generally having a good time. Children in Ireland have a tradition of pinching their friends who don’t wear green on this day!

Traditional Food and Drink on St. Patrick’s DayBacon and cabbage is what most people have on this day. Another popular dish is Irish soda bread and potato pancakes. Irish pub owners go crazy on this day, putting green food colouring into their beers and traditional Irish Guinness Stout is a sell out in all Irish pubs! People also drink lots of Irish coffee, which is made with warm whiskey, sugar, coffee and topped off with cream. Sounds delicious? It is!

3 KEYS TO SCHOOL SUCCESSGet your children charged up and ready to learn with these tips

Blooms, Bees and Being:The Joy of Spring

A couple of weeks ago, while out enjoying a rare bit of sunshine between cold rainy spells, we saw our first bumblebee of the season, slowly moving from one bloom to another. There were no other bees to be seen, but this one was out, legs full of pollen, moving determinedly from one early bloom to another. A couple of days later the two lizards which live under the stairs were warming themselves in the fleeting midday sun. And just today a crow skimmed low overhead with a heavy load of nest materials. New shoots are poking through the dark earth, cherry blossoms are garlanding the trees and daffodils are brightening the fields. It seems that, bit by bit, spring is arriving, with its longer days, bright colours and new life.

With the longer days and the accompany-ing fresh growth and reinvigorated activity, it seems that there is often a renewed sense of lightness and repurpose to our days, particularly a drive to get outside, to turn our faces to the sun, to dig in the earth, to start planning and planting gardens, be they full of flowers or more edible crops of fruits, berries and vegeta-bles. After long weeks and months spent inside, there is an invitation on the wind to come out and play.

There is something fresh, new and exciting about planning what to plant, about preparing the earth, selecting the seeds and deciding what will work best in each location, in gently tipping each little bearer of new life into a hole and patting a blanket of earth on top. And then, once the seeds are planted, the waiting begins.

Of course there are the blooms already up from last autumn’s bulbs, and bedding plants that can be manoeuvred into place, once the last risk of frost has passed, and there are those plants that may have been started early, gently nurtured indoors,

slowly acclimatised to the outdoors and finally ready to be transplanted, and so the wait for new growth is lessened. But with all their beauty, none of these can replace the small thrill of success as new shoots come up from a carefully nurtured, seem-ingly empty patch of earth.

For so many plants, after the initial work of clearing the winter’s detritus, turning and preparing the soil, and planting the seeds, there remains the waiting. Once those small kernels have been sowed away in the warm earth, while there is there is little to be seen on the surface, so much is happening out of sight. There is still tend-ing to be done: watering, weeding, always watching for pests, fungus, other threats to the small life slowing wending its way to the surface, but there is nothing that can be done to rush the growth of those seeds – they have their own schedules and will break through the surface of the soil only when they are ready.

In the preparations, in the turning of the soil, the planting, the tending, and yes, the waiting, for many there comes a sense of peace, of oneness, that often is lacking in other parts of our lives. These small steps (and not so small, if there is much to be done to prepare the garden!) give space for the mind to roam, for seeds of thoughts perhaps long since planted to germinate and start to grow as well. Something about the fresh air, the sunlight, the immersion in nature seems to invite introspection.

We each have our own seeds, ideas or thoughts that we’ve gathered along the way, perhaps a teaching we’ve read, something we wanted to learn, or change about ourselves, perhaps something less well defined, a way of seeing the world, or a new perspective to contemplate. These seeds, too, need to be given the care and patience that we give to those in our

gardens.Consider what a seed requires to germi-nate and take root. The right environment, a place that is fertile and that can provide a safe home for the seed, someplace for roots to sink down, a place where nourish-ment can be drawn up those roots. It requires warmth and light, which encour-age the new seedling to the surface, to break through the darkness and, firmly anchored, to grow. And time, because while some seeds can be forced, most will emerge only when they are ready.

How much of the above can be applied to ourselves, when new seeds have been planted in our minds? If we are receptive and ready, we provide that nurturing environment, and slowly roots form, and those seeds, of teachings, of new experi-ences, of new ways of looking at the world or of being within it, slowly grow and come into the light. Often that happens without us ever thinking about it. The transforma-tion occurs deep down, and until the seed-lings break through, we may not have an awareness of what has been growing within until suddenly it is simply there. Other times, though, we know that seed has been planted, and, like the seeds sown in our freshly turned gardens, we want so much to see the growth right away. The hardest thing to do is to wait for it to grow in its own time.

It may be that, in the joyous return of spring, in nature and in the work that we can choose to see as drudgery or as a gift of time, within a place of calm and peace, we can find the inspiration that will make it possible to nurture and welcome those seeds that have been planted deep within, while we eagerly anticipate the new growth bringing beauty and fullness to our gardens.
