South Carolina ranks as the nation’s No. 2 producer of tires, according to Tire Business’ annual ranking of states. In 2012, the daily production capacity in South Carolina’s tire plants total 84,000 units.
According to the Brookings Institute analysis, manufactur-ing jobs in the Columbia area increased 5.9% between Q4 2010 and Q4 2011; the national average was 2.7% for the same period. Their analysis also identified 8.5% of all manufacturing jobs in Columbia as “high tech” and 20.4% as “moderately high tech.”
WIRED magazine named South Carolina an “Emerging Epicenter of High Tech Industry” in six fields, including: Aerospace Vehicles, Automotive, Plastics, Metal Manufac-turing, Communications Technology and Electrical Equipment.

times since establishing operations in
1994 and currently employ more than
300 workers.
HAIER AMERICA opened and produced its
first refrigerator in March 2000, becoming
the first Chinese company to open a fac-
tory in the U.S. Today the facility employs
nearly 200 workers and boasts an annual
production capacity of 400,000 units.

MANUFACTURING GDP & EXPORTSManufactured products account for nearly 97% of all goods exported from South Carolina. The Central SC Region exports $1.5 billion in goods annually; top five export categories include: Machinery, Plastics & Rubber Products, Chemicals, Computer & Electronic Products and Transportation Equipment.
In Central SC, 11% of the workforce is employed in manufacturing, which contributes $3.5 billion annually towards the economy—roughly 11% of the region’s total gross domestic product. Comparatively, at the national level, manufacturing accounts for 8.5% of the total gross domestic product.
According to the US Dept. of Commerce, South Carolina had the fastest growing manufacturing GDP on the East Coast between 2011-2012. Manufacturing GDP in South Carolina grew by 8.5% during this period; comparatively, the national manufacturing GDP growth rate was 7.8% for the same period.
