The outdoor season is off to a fine start at The Last Resort campground

THE CAMPGROUND ALSO BOASTS A WELL-STOCKED CONVENIENCE STORE COMPLETE WITH A DELI AND ESPRESSO BAR

POMEROY, WASHINGTON -Area anglers have been pulling in some big ones at the freshly stocked lakes just past the Last Resort campgrounds, located at 2005 Tucannon Road. But fishing is just one of many activities outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy along the Tucannon as the weather warms. The Last Resort is just two miles from eight stocked lakes, the Tucanon River and

hiking trails.The Towery's moved from

a small farming community in Aumsville, Ore. and purchased the park in 2013. They are starting their sixth season as operators.

"We enjoy the beautiful office we get to work in every day and meeting so many people. Jason was a superintendent for a

construction company in Salem, Ore. He worked out of and stayed in an RV so it was something we started looking into when our last daughter was graduating. We found this park and it was history," Cheri said.

Our son Shawn moved up to the Tucannon a year after us and works for us. He does the maintenance of the park and also works in the store. Our two daughters, Sasha and Shayla, live in Oregon and each have daughters. Olivia (6) and Saylor (2) love to come visit Mimi and Papa's," she added.

The campground offers five deluxe cabins, one camping cabin, 20 full hook-ups, 12 water/power sites and five tent sites.

"We can accommodate big rigs as we have some 50 amp 70-foot sites, and all of our site are pull-through, except one. We also offer dry storage, with daily and

monthly rates, which has been popular lately for people that want to come up on the weekends and not haul their trailers back and forth," Cheri said.

The campground also boasts a well-stocked convenience store complete with a deli and espresso bar. Hunting and fishing licenses are available for purchase and cold storage is available to store game that comes in during hunting season.

"The store is full of anything you may need or have forgotten to bring. Groceries, beer, wine, tobacco, ice, wood, gas, propane, apparel and fishing and hunting gear," Cheri said.

The Towery's are big supporters of youth fishing and hunting events.

"We put on the Youth Turkey Clinic every spring, which is a huge hit and also are involved in the Forest Service Kids Fish Free fishing event coming up June 9 at Rainbow Lake. We are also a sponsor for the statewide fishing derby which started Sat., April 27 and runs through Oct. 31. The State plants tagged fish in statewide lakes – Blue and Watson in our area – and whoever catches a tagged fish calls the number to find out where to go for their prize," Cheri said.

RVShare.com sees rental spike

VROOMING across a lake in a speedboat, camping in a forest, crossing the Great Plains toward some distant national park in an RV. These are quintessential summer scenes. But, increasingly, vacationers are seeking these experiences in a slightly different way: They are renting boats, campsites and RVs from individuals in the growing Airbnb-like peer-to-peer marketplace.

RVShare.com could launch your ultimate joy ride: a family vacation in a recreational vehicle, aka a small home on wheels - one owned by someone else, no upkeep required. Increasing numbers of people are doing just that, said spokeswoman Maddi Bourgerie of RVShare, a peer-to-peer RV sharing site.

Bourgerie said that the number of bookings in the Twin Cities metro area jumped 100 percent from 2017 to 2018. The company started in Akron, Ohio, in 2013. By

the following year, there was one RV available to rent in the Twin Cities metro area; today there are 200, ranging from a Mercedes Winnebago, starting at $185 per night, to one of those efficient teardrop trailers you hook up to your own vehicle, starting at $99 per night.

"We've seen a rise in road trips in general; it's easy to travel by road and go to off-the-beaten-path destinations," Bourgerie said.

Boating enthusiasts can head to GetMyBoat. com to rent a boat to drive themselves, or find captained vessels. That site took off in 2013 in San Francisco, where the founders lamented over all the boats tied up at marinas instead of being out on the water. The site lists 239 boats in Minnesota; the company sees potential growth here, given the state's 800,000 registered boats.

Report: Millennials are driving campingby Art Lieberman

THERE finally is complete information about the year 2018 in the camping industry. It proves, without a doubt, the influence that the “under 30s” are having on our business. It deals with what they buy, where they stay, and how they spend their money in our industry.

This information has been secured from many sources such as RVIA, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics and also from KOA in their 2019 North American Camping Report.

It appears that many millennials are treating their homes like their phones they want to be mobile. Ask any millennial what their home phone number is and they’ll say they only have a cell phone. Now, it appears they don’t want to buy a house, they want a trailer or an RV.

If not a permanent solution, they are renting RVs to go camping and, out west, they are doing it through Airbnb. Instagram accounts keep them connected with others who travel through #vanlife, #homeiswhereyouparkit or #campervan.

Over 14 million households began camping last year for the first time. According to statistics, 45% are millennials, and 51% say they are non-white. More than 78 million households camped last year

– a record. The RVIA reported that 483,672 units were sold last year, also a record.

Designers of RVs are now concentrating on the needs of people in their 20s and 30s. The Airstream is the most modern of the RVs on the market. It looks like a silver bullet. Airstream has had its 5th consecutive year of growth and had better than a 200% growth during that period. They have an assortment of RVs and trailers that fit many budgets.

Millennials are also buying classic campers like motorhomes, camper vans and pop-tops. There are even vintage camper organizations that bring together collectors or owners of these stylized vehicles.

But millennials are also venturing forth into campgrounds and renting cabins. I have, for many years, been touting cabins to campground owners to supply non-RV owners the opportunity to spend time at their park. The statistics to

justify that position are easy to find. There are approximately 158 million households in the US. A household can be a single person right through a family of 10 or more. There are less than 10 million RVs presently in the US, which means that nearly 150,000 million households cannot stay at an RV Park unless it has cabins. Most cabins run between $20,000 to $50,000 dollars according to Conestoga Log Cabins. Purchasing a

cabin or more is a great investment for a campground because the total cost of the unit can be recouped in less than two years.

Finally, from our prospective as credit/debit

card providers, campground owners should know that millennials do not deal with checks.

They should also be aware that they don’t like to carry much cash with them. They like to rely on the security of a debit or credit card which, before the end of this year will ALL require a PIN number

rather than a signature.

Unbelievably there is still a percentage of owners that refuse to accept credit cards even though the cost of them is a tax write-off. They claim THEIR

campers know that they must pay in cash or check. Those people are obviously loyal customers, however if the owners want NEW customers they must move into the 21st century and deal with a new generation of campers.

New online camping reservations a big hit with West Virginia Campers

CHARLESTON - Camping is one of the most popular activities in West Virginia’s world-class state park system, but campers have historically had to go to great lengths to make sure they’ll have a site or take their chances on busy weekends. Now campers can easily select a site on their smartphones, tablets, or computers in advance of their trip and be assured it will be available when they arrive.

At an event held Friday, April 26, at Audra State Park, it was announced campers can now reserve campsites online at www.wvstateparks.com before they set out for the woods.

“In the first three days, more than 4,500 guest nights have been booked through the site,” said Tourism Commissioner Chelsea

Ruby. “We have received reservations from 26 states including California, Wyoming and Washington and outside the U.S. from Ontario, Canada,” she said.

The demand for camping at some parks is so high that State Parks has long used a system of mail-in reservations. That system will be phased out after the 2019 season, but existing mail-in reservations will be honored.

Phone reservations are still available, and walk-in reservations will still be allowed subject to availability. Campers are encouraged to make a reservation at least one day in advance. All picnic shelters in the park system are also now available for reservation online.

Additionally, it was

announced that $3.5 million in campground upgrades will soon be invested at 16 state parks and forests. Campground projects range from bathhouse upgrades to electrical improvements at the following parks and forests: Audra, Babcock, Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Bluestone, Cabwaylingo, Camp Creek, Cedar Creek, Chief Logan, Coopers Rock, Holly River, Kanawha, Moncove Lake, Twin Falls, Tygart, and Watoga. West Virginia’s state parks and forests are visited by more than 7 million people each year who enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities, like hiking, fishing and other exciting outdoor adventures, like the new Pipestem Peaks Zipline Tour at Pipestem Resort.

THE DETAILS:

All campsites and picnic

shelters will be available

for reservation one year in

advance, beginning on the

first day of the month for that

month.

Advance reservations for

campsites are encouraged;

however, walk-ins will still be

welcome, pending availability.

Campers arriving at the

park without an advance

reservation can inquire about

available sites

by going online, calling

1-833-WVPARKS, or stoppingby a designated check-instation or park office.

Existing mail-in and over-the-phone reservations have already been entered into the new system and will be honored for the 2019 season. Confirmation letters have been mailed, but guests can also confirm their reservations by

calling 1-833-WVPARKS.

If a cancellation is made within 60 days of a visit, a credit toward a future stay will be issued. Cancellations made within one week are non-refundable.

To make a reservation or explore availability for campsites, cabins and lodge rooms at any West Virginia state park or forest, visit wvstateparks.com.

TIME SPENT CAMPING OR RVING ALLOWS YOU TO SLOW DOWN AND GIVES YOU THE FLEXIBILITY TO PURSUE WHAT YOU WANT AND WHERE YOU WANT TO BE

PA. Campground Owners Association promotes camping in Pennsylvania

PENN. - The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association teamed up with Cabela’s in Hamburg, Pennsylvania this year to promote the camping lifestyle. “Discover Your Outdoor Moments” was the theme that the association chose for the April 27-28 event.

Members of the Association from thirteen campgrounds were on hand to greet the guests and give them a 2019 Campground Directory of privately owned parks. They experienced what camping is really like by tasting S’mores, which the PCOA members

made on a gas grill. A total of 1,300 S’mores were given out to the hungry crowd. Coloring books were given to the children and there was a photo opportunity on hand.

Three RVs were available for tours. Family Camping Outlet from Stowe, PA, was the participating dealership. Promotional acorn signage and colorful spring flowers added to the promotion.

“Camping is not only the most affordable vacation around, it also is fun and memorable. In Pennsylvania we have 226 campgrounds to choose from to make that memory,” said Beverly Gruber, the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association. “Camping is a great family activity. At the Cabela’s event, young families were encouraged to take their children camping this year.”

She adds, “Time spent camping or RVing allows you to slow down and gives you the flexibility to pursue what you want and where you want

to be. It gives you a chance to rediscover your family and lets you choose the activities your family enjoys.

THE national average pump price for a gallon of regular gasoline is a penny higher Wednesday than it was on Monday. At $2.90, the average is 20 cents a gallon more than it was just one month ago.

The state hardest hit by rising gas prices is California, where the average price was $4.08 a gallon Wednesday morning, down a penny from Monday’s average price. The state’s drivers pay $0.7368 per gallon in federal and state taxes, the second-highest rate among the lower 48 states. Only Pennsylvania drivers pay more, $0.771 per gallon, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API).

While drivers in no other state are paying $4 or more for a gallon of gas, drivers in nine more states are paying an average of more than $3 a gallon, according to Wednesday morning data

collected by GasBuddy. They are Hawaii ($3.74), Nevada ($3.51), Washington ($3.49), Oregon ($3.38), Alaska ($3.36), Arizona ($3.15), Utah ($3.07), Pennsylvania ($3.05) and Idaho ($3.03). Gas prices are well on their way to a 12-month high.

While pump price increases have moderated, they will continue to rise for the next several weeks, as the Memorial Day holiday weekend approaches and demand for gasoline rises during the summer driving season.

Last year, pump prices actually declined by about four cents a gallon on May 1 to $2.35 a gallon, following an unexpected rise in U.S. gasoline inventories. By the time the holiday weekend rolled around, prices had risen by more than 60 cents a gallon, sparking fears that U.S. travelers would not hit

the road for their summer vacations.

The national average price ahead of Memorial Day last year reached $2.98 a gallon, but it didn’t reach that level again all year and by December had dropped to $2.26 a gallon, the lowest average of the year. As

reported earlier in April, gas prices were climbing to a record high for 2019.

Gasoline prices have been on a steadily rising path as U.S. refineries complete seasonal maintenance and production of distillates (diesel fuel) rises to accommodate new international regulations going into effect this year on low-sulfur marine fuel.

The state with the lowest price for a gallon of gas is Alabama, where drivers are paying $2.51 a gallon Wednesday morning, more than $1.50 less than California drivers. Nearly 40 cents of that price difference is due to lower gasoline taxes in Alabama. The other nine states with the lowest current prices are Mississippi ($2.52), South Carolina ($2.54), Louisiana ($2.55), Arkansas ($2.56), Missouri ($2.57), Tennessee ($2.60), Texas ($2.60), Oklahoma ($2.61) and Kansas ($2.63).

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is expected to report later Wednesday that the national crude oil inventory rose by about 2.1 million barrels last week, while gasoline inventories are expected drop by about a million barrels. The API reported Tuesday night that the U.S. crude inventories rose by 6.8 million barrels and gasoline inventories dropped by about 1.1 million barrels in the week ended April 26.

Unseasonable and ‘unreasonable' weather doesn't scare off campers

BARABOO, Wis. - Despite highs in the mid-30s and predicted snow, campers at Devil’s Lake aren’t letting the weather scare them away.

According to the Devil’s Lake phone line, all reservable campsites had already been filled before this weekend.

"With camping, you never

know what the weather's gonna be,” camper Alan Kwon said.

"I wasn't expecting snow, at least,” another camper, Joe Hollowed, said.

Past February, flurries are rarely welcome.

"By the time it gets to like March, you're like, ‘OK I'm over it,’” Hollowed said. "April, it's unreasonable."

"It's a little scary,” Kwon said.

"We saw a lot of people leaving so far,” Kwon’s friend, Paul Fina said.

They planned the trip months ago.

"So we were thinking, 'Oh

it's the beginning of spring. It should be warmer, perfect camping weather,” Kwon said. “We had no idea there would be a snow storm coming."

But with a few ways to keep warm, the crew from Chicago is toughing it out.

"We just got some New Glarus beer, so we're excited about that,” Kwon said.

"I think that's pretty typical for camping, to just roll with it no matter what,” Fina said.

Their neighbors, also from the Windy City have plans to put up with some less-than-ideal weather, too.

Tentrr adds hundreds of new backcountry, partner sites to online marketplace

WASHINGTON - Tentrr is adding two new additions to its online marketplace: Backcountry and Partner sites.

At Tentrr’s new Backcountry sites, campers can now bring their own equipment to private camping sites that have no existing infrastructure. Sites can be booked at the click of a button and feature secluded spots alongside lakes and rivers, on sandy beaches, or on top of mountains. For those who might need to rent an extra tent or forgot their cooler at home, CampKeepers can rent camping equipment such as pop-up tents, sleeping pads, coolers, kayak or bicycle rentals, or farm fresh eggs and vegetables for an additional

fee with “Tentrr Extras.”

In addition to new Backcountry sites, Tentrr is also adding Partner sites to its platform. Partner sites will still offer privacy and seclusion but are perfect for campers

who want a little more luxury. Partner sites offer numerous glamping amenities from a personal chef on your own island, ensuite bathrooms, and a cooler full of farm fresh goodies waiting for you in your tent.

Founder Michael D’Agostino said, “We were inspired to add backcountry sites to our platform because we ran across so many incredible places to camp but for one reason or another we weren’t able to install our signature fully-equipped campsite. However, we still wanted our campers to have access to these incredible camping spots.”

Currently, Tentrr has over 200 backcountry and partner sites on its platform that start at $25 per night. Over the course of the summer,

Tentrr is on track to add another 1,000 over the course of the summer.

Backcountry and partner sites are in addition to Tentrr’s existing network of signature sites that come fully-equipped with an elevated wood platform with a canvas-safari style tent, queen-sized bed, wood stove, Adirondack chairs, picnic table, benches with storage, fire pit, grill, sun shower, camp toilet. To date,

Tentrr has added more than 500 signature sites that can be found across the US and is adding another 500 Signature Sites throughout 2019.

Jellystone Park in Illinois adding a Wibit and new cabins

Ted and Deb Festa

PITTSFIELD, Ill - The Jellystone Park at Pine Lakes is adding a major new amenity this year: a Wibit floating obstacle course.

“We are hoping to have it in place and ready for use by Memorial Day weekend,” said Deb Festa, who co-owns and operates the park with her husband, Ted.

Other campground improvements the park is making include the addition of six more rental units - four rustic cabins and two fully furnished park model RVs - a new bathhouse, and a food trailer for the park’s swimming beach.

The Festas purchased the campground in 2007. In 2011, they joined the Jellystone Park franchise network, which

celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Jellystone Park locations, of course, are famous for their organized family activities and theme weekends with Yogi Bear, which help families create unique memories. Amenities and activities at the Jellystone Park at Pine Lakes include a pool, a beach, a water slide, a jumping pillow, wagon rides, arts and crafts projects, scavenger hunts, and plentiful interactions with Yogi Bear, Boo Boo Bear, Cindy Bear, and Ranger Smith.

Upcoming theme weekends include two “Chocolate Lovers

Weekends” beginning May 31 and June 22, respectively, with candy bar bingo, a chocolate balloon toss, a chocolate pie eating contest and edible crafts; a “Pirate Weekend” July 12 where kids can make their own pirate flag and search for Yogi’s picnic basket treasure; and a “Hawaiian Luau Weekend” July 19 where guests can make their

own lei, compete in “tacky tourist races” and Hula Hoop contests, and participate in a Hawaiian Luau pot luck.

For a complete schedule of the activities and theme weekends available at the park, please visit www.jellystonepinelakes.com.

TACO explores problems associated with evicting RV park guests

MONTGOMERY, TX. - The Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO) has spent many years working to amend existing Texas laws to make it easier to remove guests on the basis of “theft of service” or “trespassing” legislation.

The idea, according to TACO Executive Director and CEO Brian Schaeffer, is to create the legal basis to quickly remove guests who fail to pay for site services or otherwise violate park rules, just as if they were staying in a hotel or motel.

But, during a legal affairs seminar on the second day of TACO’s spring meeting last week, Schaeffer said the association’s efforts to modify state statutes mean little if local law enforcement

authorities know nothing about these statutes or if they automatically handle every kind of guest dispute as a “landlord-tenant” issue that has to go through a civil court process.

Schaeffer said it is, therefore, up to park operators to visit with their local law enforcement authorities as soon as possible to find out how they interpret state laws governing “theft of service” and “trespassing” at RV parks.

“You need to talk to local law enforcement from an educated standpoint,” he explained. “Visit with law enforcement officials because you need them to be on your side.

Texas RV park operators can print out latest versions of applicable Texas laws involving

expulsions and evictions, which are posted at www.tacomembers.com.

Campground owners in other states should consult their attorney, state attorney general or state association for specific information and advice regarding the evictions process in their areas.

“Take the laws and ask your local law enforcement authorities, ‘How do you interpret this?’” Schaeffer recommended. “You need to able to approach these people, get their opinion and know up front what they are going to be able to do to help you or not help you.

“If local law enforcement officials still refuse to enforce state statutes involving RV parks, ask them what you can do to improve your chances of

having guests quickly removed if they fail to pay or otherwise violate park rules,” he added.

This may involve having every guest sign a “site service agreement,” if they haven’t done so previously.

“If law enforcement officials say they will not remove guests based on state ‘theft of service’ or ‘trespassing’ laws, then you have to learn how to process evictions quickly,” Schaeffer explained. Park operators have to proactively “adapt” to their local circumstances if law enforcement will not honor RV park specific laws.

“Learn to process evictions quickly and ruthlessly,” Schaeffer said. “Otherwise, your park will lose money.”

Schaeffer noted that some park operators run criminal background and credit checks on every guest. He added that when companies call to reserve a block of campsites for their workers, background checks should be run on every guest.

One park operator attending Schaeffer’s seminar said it’s also worthwhile to obtain contact information for every guest’s “next of kin” in case the guest dies, becomes seriously injured or some other emergency situation occurs while they are at the park.

LLA Hospitality offering tool kit for first time owners

Josh Weissenstein Cody Sauer

LLA Hospitality, a leading operator of campgrounds nationwide led by Cody Sauer and Josh Weissenstein, is proud to introduce their latest offering, the Fire Starter Package, a set of tools and services designed specifically for first time campground owners, according to a press release.

"We know that for most new owners, the purchase of their campground represents one of the largest financial decisions of their life. We also know that it is the start of a rewarding journey of operating their own business. While the process of purchasing a campground can be challenging, the purchase is just the beginning of the hard work," said Sauer.

“During an owner's first season, they will have the opportunity to engage with thousands of guests. The thought of being responsible

for so many camper’s experiences is overwhelming. LLA Hospitality's Fire Starter Package includes the documentation, processes, and procedures we wish we had in our first season to set the foundation for our campground's success," said Weissenstein.

The demands on today's campground owner are

higher than ever before. With constantly increasing guest expectations and over 78 million U.S. households having camped in 2018, according to Kampgrounds of America's (KOA) 2019 North American Camping Report, owners must be regularly innovating and improving their services.

The Fire Starter Package includes the creation of

professional operating manuals to provide guidance, clear processes and plans; budgets and cash flow projections to guide financial decision making and to ensure accountability for those decisions; best‐in‐class processes for recruiting, hiring and training; and revenue generation plans to maximize the campground's income and value, noted the release.

"We are excited to continue developing useful and relevant management tools for our fellow owners that enable prudent financial decisions and an enhanced experience for their teams and guests," added Sauer.
