Announcement Rianah Gentry of Atlanta, GA invites you to The Buckhead Girls Choir Winter Concert on December 15, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at the William Breman Jewish Home Auditorium, 3150 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, GA. ----------------------------------------------------

Corrections, Addenda/Feedback for the Gazette

-Lepolian Gentry of Jackson expressed appreciation for the October 2013 edition of the Gazette. He was very pleased about the piece, “The Way We Were – The Fifth Gentry Family Reunion, 1971.” He did not realize that so many members were in attendance. ----------------------------------------------------

Mrs. Mouse Piece has a Heightened Vision for the Gazette and the Family The Mouse Piece (MP) had gotten a comment or two about the Gazette and sensed the light of day. But Mrs. MP said “Not so fast, there is much room for improvement.” After a bit of shock, the MP said how so? Following a few words about Mrs. MP, we will share her vision for the Gazette. First, you should know that Mrs. MP is indeed the anchor of the Gazette. She endorses nothing less than the truth and whole story. If it requires telephone calls, research, or follow-ups, it has to be done. Then it must be thoroughly proofed and appropriately and timely distributed. Now, Mrs. MP’s vision: She thinks that the publishing should rotate monthly among various family members. Members should indicate the month that they would like to handle the newsletter and be given the opportunity to do so. (Please accept this as an open invitation for volunteers; tell us the month that you would like to publish it). She would also like to print the names of family members that we are not getting information on and tell them that we love them and would like to hear from them. (We love our family and would like to hear from all members)! She is concerned that we do not have birthdays for a number of family members and cannot list them in the birthday section. (Everyone, please let us know your birthday and that of others in the family). She wants members to submit more stories about things that they do on a daily basis; especially some humorous things, as she likes to laugh as she goes through life. (She especially likes the pieces that Luther Williams sends for the newsletter). She would like EVERY MEMBER to send to the Gazette a “file” photo for use when you are cited for something. (Please email a digital copy if possible; however, a hard copy is acceptable). Of course, everyone should know that Mrs. MP’s dreams and visions are always in progress; but she also has a special tenacity to get things done and to make dreams come true. So all family members may as well reach out to each other, hold hands, SIR with love, and make this family the best on planet earth. -------------------------------------------------

Cousin Irving Moore Called A Shirt-Tail Boy MISTER – It Was Never Forgotten What makes a boy into a man? Irving Moore’s (6/7/1921-10/26/1999) approach was to instill confidence, share the fruits of life, open up windows of opportunity, and call him Mister. His theory may now be evidence based. Growing up in Noxapater, people often didn’t even know your name. Older people would refer to you by your parents’ name. For example, hey you – Coy’s boy, come here! Younger people would refer to you by a nickname. Everybody seemed to have a nickname and many times it was a hurtful or embarrassing name. It could be “hog head,” “shorty,” or any other thing that called attention to your shortcoming. But this is not the way Irving did business. Irving was probably one of the wisest men of his time when it came to working with young people. He was disciplined – honorably discharged from the United States Army and well educated – holding a diploma from Harris High School in Meridian, B. S. and Master’s degrees from Jackson State University, and Specialist degree from Mississippi State University. By profession, he was a teacher, principal, vocational education and attendance officer, and basketball and baseball coach through which he amassed 38 and one half years with only four days of absence. On Sunday, he was superintendent of Sunday school, BTU director, deacon, educational leader, choir member, usher (Obituary), and anything else the church needed. He was also a successful farmer, fine husband, super dad, and a staunch extended family man. But moreover, he loved working with people and knew how to bring out the best in them. Whatever Irving had, he would either teach it, share it, or do both; never keeping the wonders of life a secret to himself. He freely taught everything he knew, he shared the successes and challenges of his life, he wished everyone the best, and he always congratulated accomplishments. The MP was a recipient of all these things from Irving. Yet, what added icing to the cake, when I was just a shirt-tail boy, he called me Mister; this made me look forward to manhood. Calling me Mister conveyed so much. It embodied confidence, respect, and expectation. It was like Irving saw something in you that you did not see in yourself. His life and legacy will spring eternity in the family. ----------------------------------------------------------- LaVerne Gentry was Honored as Unspoken Hero by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated

It has been said that good deeds never go unnoticed. Be assured that God sits high and looks low; so He is always cognizant of what you do to bring glory and honor to His name. Then the family always has a watchful eye for its members and will be there to SIR you with love. Well, LaVerne’s notice reached another level and another group on November 9, 2013. She was honored by her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta; moreover, it came from the undergraduate members of the sorority. The honor event had all the whistles and bells of a sophisticated, formal occasion. The ballroom on the Jackson State

University Campus was beautifully decorated and arranged with honoree LaVerne and her family having a front row table. The printed program, led and conducted by the undergraduate students, called for welcome/occasion, invocation, dinner, dance selection, tribute/poem, musical selection, presentation of the Unspoken Hero, presentation of scholarship, and remarks. Everything went orderly and smoothly as planned. The program was only the beginning of the honoring and celebration. Everybody wanted to take a photo with the honoree; camera lights were flashing in the ballroom like a firework display. This was mixed with real fellowship and dancing. It was good to see a deserving person being honored; it was wonderful to see a group of people having a great time; and personally, it was amazing to have all this happen because of the life and work of one of our family members. LaVerne is indeed deserving of the title “Hero.” She is at the front of the class in her church activities, her sorority, her profession, and the family. She is active in Sunday school and many other church affiliations; a stateswoman and role model in her sorority; a leader and academician in her profession; and a caring and loving family member. But as much as she has accomplished, as much as she does daily; she has the potential to reach the end of many more rainbows. LaVerne, keep reaching for the stars; the family has your back and rejoices in your successes. Family members attending the event included Gisele, Shun, Sonja, Tracy, Roosevelt, Lepolian, Hazel, Ollie, and Ruben. Charles was a bit under the weather that night. -----------------------------------------------------------

Basketball at Its Best – Greg Jones’ Team Recognized as “Team of Distinction”

Gregory Jones (Rosa’s husband and Stepfather of

Mica Gentry) of Atlanta, GA was a member of the 1972-75 Basketball Team at Methodist University (Fayetteville, NC) that was selected for recognition and inclusion in the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame as a “Team of Distinction” on October 25, 2013. This was part of MU’s Homecoming Weekend, where congratulations were extended by MU President Ben E. Hancock, Jr. Greg was a skillful basketball player; his team won more games than any other in the history of the University.

Greg was excited about the event; stating that it was a huge selection for him and his team as they played some bad teams during that time period. The university retired his jersey, #21, in 1995. He was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 2000 and named one of the Top Ten Players in the South in 2003.

His statistics are extremely impressive. He averaged 24.7 points a game and 11 rebounds, was 3 times All American Player of the Year, and was leading conference scorer and rebounder for 4 years. While performing all these acts on the court, he said that it is true that he helped with selling tickets, making hot dogs, popping popcorn, parking cars, escorting old ladies to their seats, moping the floor at half-time and handling security matters. As a child, Greg had a big dream of becoming a great basketball player, while tossing up hoops on a full dirt court in his backyard. But he never knew that it would lead to what it did.

He can still hear his mother’s voice ringing in his ear, telling him to come in the house after firing up a few more shots as the clock ticked toward midnight. He thinks that his mother knew what was being developed in her backyard. He lifts her name as the original “Pure Shooter.” Moreover, he proclaims “O the mighty things that God will do for His glory.” For the record, Greg is more than an accomplished basketball player; he is a strong link in the family chain. He married Rosa and immediately became dedicated to the wellbeing of Solera and Mica and her family. He fondly became Papa Greg. He is always there for Regah and Rianah as they have school activities and graduations, and progress in life. He is admired by the entire family.

Congratulations to Dr. Gregory Jones! (Photo: Gregory and Rosa Jones.) (Contributor: Mica Gentry) --------------------------------------------------------------

Sympathy Expressions/Family Prayer for Members

Expressions of sympathy are extended to: -Danny (Fred) Frazier of Jackson in the loss of his grandson, Amari Q. Darby (born 11/16/98), who passed on November 19, 2013 and was funeralized on November 30, 2013 at Refuge Temple in Jackson, MS. He had celebrated his 15th birthday earlier in the week before being struck as a pedestrian by an automobile in Dallas, TX, where he lived. His parents LeShaun F. Darby and Veronica DeShawn Owens and the entire family remember him as having lived a beautiful life. Prayer for the Family Dear God, our family knows what it is like to experience health; we have had a reasonable portion of it. The family knows what it is like to experience sickness; we have had to seek medical services and Your mercy for relief. The family knows what it is like to lose loved ones; we have loss older members and some younger members. Yet, in the good times, in trying times, and even in sad times; we honor and praise You. We appreciate and enjoy the lilies of Your fields; but we know that there are crosses to bear on this earth to reach our heavenly home. We ask that You give us strength and faith to carry on, and one day, to make it in. Now, we ask for a special blessing for family members who are sick and shut-in. We lift to You Patty Addeco, Edgar Lee (Sam) Dawkins, Vonnie Gentry, Jerry “Danny” McCord, III, Jerry Gentry, Sr., Henry Dawkins, Larry Ware, and others in need of prayer. Have them to know that You are God and that for You, all things are possible. As You bless us, we will always be careful to give You the praise. This is our prayer. Amen. I Leave with You One Thought: Thankful, Pure Hearts Make for a Great Family

There were times when family members were somewhat judged by the crops they grew, the automobiles they drove, and the company they kept. These things have their place; but it really is the heart that makes for a great family. The thankful heart brings hope and healing to life (C. Lewis) and the family. The pure heart compels you to love one another and to walk by faith; and moreover, the pure in heart shall see God (Mt 5:8) and enable us to see all our loved ones who have gone before us. (Image: www.nojobformom.com) ---------------------------------------------------

SIRing with Love (Did you know?) -Makaila Hicks of Southaven was recently featured on a video to represent the Greenbrook Elementary School kindergarten students making progress with the “Common Core State Standard” curriculum (K.CC.1. and K.CC.6.). The concepts of study were “greater than,” “less than,” “equal to,” and “counting by ones and tens.” She and her schoolmate were junior scholars! Check out their performance at http://vimeo.com/m/79506544; it will certainly make your day. -Derrick Marquis Gentry of Snellville, GA, for the last grading period, earned all A’s and One B. He is on a roll and is encouraged to keep-up the good work! (Contributor: Grandmother Edith) -Reginald Gentry of Atlanta, GA, on November 18-19, 2013, attended a business meeting in Charlotte, NC. He is employed by the Coca Cola Company. He makes the job look so easy! -Ressia Hicks of Southaven, on November 20, 2013, had an outpatient medical procedure. Mother Bessie Gentry was a great help to her until it came to driving on the interstate back home; she got close to a big truck and Ressia let her know that she wanted a safe trip back home. The procedure was a success and Ressia is back in the saddle again. Ruben Gentry joined the family to visit and celebrate Ressia’s birthday on November 21st. It was a nice little family affair; Makaila Hicks wanted Nana Bessie to leave the table decorated for her birthday on November 29th.

-Rianah Gentry of Atlanta, GA, on November 2, 2013, had a sleepover at a friend’s house and it enabled her to meet a cast member on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne TV show. She met Cathy Davis and reported “she remembered my name.” -Regah Gentry of Atlanta, GA informed us that she is now opening up her own business, “RegahGentry 4A Re-store and Re-style.” -Lena K. Taylor of Brown Deer, WI, in October, 2013 at the Jackson State University Homecoming, was honored for her effort at recruiting students to attend the university. (Contributor: Charles Gentry) -Charles Gentry of Clinton had to extend nursing his knee. Of course, his conversation is better now than ever. It is wonderful to sit and talk with him; his wisdom and caring attitude capture the moment. LaVerne is there for his every need; her cooking is simply superb. (Update: Charles had a procedure done on the knee and it brought much needed relief.) -Edith Gentry of McComb, on November 11-13, 2013, came to Jackson for training for a medical procedure. Her skin was so smooth, her mood was so pleasant, and she looked so good. Arthur was right by her side, introducing medical staff, telling jokes, solving world problems, and making life so wonderful. -Velsie Gentry of Jackson, on November 13, 2013, traveled to Houston, TX. It was like catching a breath of fresh air. (Contributor: Eula Gentry) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thanksgiving Updates <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< -Henry Dawkins of Chesapeake, VA was staying-in. Annie Mae was going to Belinda’s house for food; she would bring some for Henry. -Dorothy Dawkins of Brown Deer, WI had the entire family home for Thanksgiving dinner; her daughter Sandra Underwood of Columbus, MD had to preserve some of the food. Though not so easy, she is trying to press forward; fortunately, to make memories positive, her younger son looks like Bob (10/13/1938-4/14/2013) and she now has a grandson who looks like him. We extend get-well wishes to her brother Perry of Smyrna, GA who is ill. -Florence Barnett of Noxapater was going to Willie and Bobbie Killins’ house (Canton) for dinner. Eddie Moore of Brandon (visiting with Florence) and Josephine Killins of Noxapater were to accompany Florence. Dale Killins of Detroit, MI came to visit parents Willie and Bobbie. -Mary Etta Shields of Noxapater planned to host daughter Patricia and her husband Michael Melvin of Jackson for dinner. Her son John Henson was traveling to Rock Island, IL to visit his two grandchildren; Kimble lives near John. Warren did not tackle the weather to come home.

don't run this risk! It's REALLY important info, about what your posting things on your cell phones can do TO YOU!!!Too much technology out there these days so beware...........PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO WATCH THIS VIDEO, AND TAKE THE RECOMMENDED PRECAUTIONS. If you have children or grandchildren you NEED to watch this. I had no idea this could happen from taking pictures on the blackberry or cell phone. It's scary. Click link below..... " http://www.youtube.com/embed/N2vARzvWxwY?rel=0" /Luther sent an email sharing, “Little known facts.” Did you know the saying "God willing and the Creek don't rise" was in reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water? It was written by Benjamin Hawkins, a politician and Indian diplomat. While in the south, Hawkins was requested by the President of the U.S. to return to Washington. In his response, he was said to write, "God willing and the Creek don't rise." Because he capitalized the word "Creek" it is deduced that he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water. In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint.) At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the phrase 'minding your 'P's and Q's'. Similar facts are provided about “Big Wig,” “Chairman of the Board,” “Crack a smile,” “Losing face,” and “Straight laced.” ---------------------------------------------

The Gentry Gazette Live (Photo of the Month – X Generation, Fireside Chat)

A nice chat around the fireside was about as good as life could get back in the day; it might even have a message for today. The crop preparation and growing season was often long and of hard labor. Around Thanksgiving the fields were usually harvested and there was a little time to sit around the fire, eat peanuts and potatoes, and just enjoy each other. Persons experiencing such an occasion are pictured above: Rosana Dawkins (holding Regina Gentry), Collie Jordan, Eddie Moore, Hannah Harper, J.A. Gentry, and Jeff Harper. These were some of the best people to walk on planet earth; whatever we are or hope to be, we owe it to these individuals. They were and still are the bed-rock of our family. Luther Vandross had it right, it would be so wonderful to “dance” with these family members again; they would lift us high and spin us around ‘til we fell asleep – if we could get another chance, another walk, another dance with them, I’d play a song that would never, ever end. At a minimum, each and every one of us should SIR them with love! -----------------------------------------------------
