Indonesia: With 700 new cases, Indonesia had 26,473 confirmed cases including 1,613 deaths. More than 223,000 tests have been carried out to date. West Java is the first province to implement the ‘new normal’. The Religious Affairs Ministry has issued new guidelines for houses of worship, which are set to reopen soon as part of the “new normal”. The World Bank has agreed to provide a US$250 million loan to support Indonesia’s COVID-19 response. The funds will go toward strengthening the country’s emergency response to the pandemic, including improving intensive care capacity, providing more personal protective equipment and improving the laboratory network and surveillance system, and will also be used to prepare for future outbreaks of infectious diseases by improving the country's reporting and surveillance systems. Japan: With 118 new infections reported in the last 72 hours across Japan, the total number of new cases rose to 16,650 including 14,290 recoveries and 891 fatalities. A municipal elementary school that was reopened on 25 May in the southwestern city of Kitakyushu reported a cluster infection of five children in a class. From 1 June, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government moved to the second phase of the three-stage road map for reopening its economy after weeks of closure, thus will relax business suspensions further to allow theatres, commercial facilities and sports gyms to reopen. As per the Health Ministry, the number of mental health consultations in April nearly tripled compared to the previous two months’ cumulative consultations. The central disaster management council, chaired by the Prime Minister, revised its basic disaster reduction plan on 29 May by including measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases at evacuation sites. The revised plan considers the potential use of hotels and “ryokan”, Japanese-style inns, as evacuation sites to avoid overcrowding at traditional evacuation sites such as schools and community centres. The plan, drawn up under the basic law on disaster management, serves as a basis for regional disaster prevention plans developed by prefectures and municipalities. The state authorities have facilitated the return of around 10,000 Japanese stranded in other countries because of travel bans. The Japanese health ministry began testing around 10,000 people for coronavirus antibodies on 1 June. The Japanese government is considering easing its entry ban on visitors from Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, and New Zealand currently in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, said a government source on 1 June. Malaysia: According to UNHCR's Malaysia report: - COVID-19 Response Hotlines in Rohingya, Chin, Burmese, Arabic, Somali, Persian, Urdu and Tamil

have, until 20 May, received 17,711 calls. - Representatives from the Coalition of Burma Ethnics in Malaysia (COBEM) met with UNHCR on 26

May to discuss challenges faced by the Chin, Rakhine, Mon, Shan, Karen and Kachin communities particularly in the Pudu semi-enhanced MCO area.

- UNHCR has supplied 180 packs of universal wipes, 31,500 face masks and 1,400 litres of hand sanitising gel and solution to almost all partners running primary care clinic services to ensure infection prevention and control measures are supported in these facilities.

- UNHCR has been receiving information through the Partner Referral Network about asylum-seekers and refugees who were arrested during raids. Engagement, including verification of documents and advocacy against arrest and for the release of all asylum-seekers and refugees currently in immigration

detention around the country continues. UNHCR is also seeking access to asylum-seekers (not registered yet) among the undocumented migrants arrested in the raids.

- Since the commencement of the MCO on 18 March, 36 child protection cases and 11 sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) survivors have been assisted through remote case management services. On 21 May, UNHCR convened the Child Protection and SGBV Working Group Meeting online with 55 attendees from 23 organizations.

- The UNHCR Education team met with the five partners who are implementing UNHCR`s education assistance to discuss how to ensure continuity of education during and post-MCO for refugee children.

17.6 per cent of those who were infected and succumbed to Covid-19 were smokers with zero history of chronic illnesses, according to the Health Ministry. MySejahtera, the first Covid-19 monitoring app developed by the government, will introduce a check-in function at business premises, according to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Malaysians are still barred from travelling abroad, especially to countries considered as high risk for Covid-19 infections, says Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Maldives: Maldives has confirmed 1,672 cases along with 406 recoveries and five deaths. The State of Public Health Emergency has been extended until 29 June. The President has announced that the government offices will be functional for three days a week for four-hours from 31 May to 11 June. Yet, all educational institutes will remain shut down until 29 June. Congregational prayers have been allowed to resume in the islands that have no cases reported in the last 28 days. The country is expecting to restart tourism in July. 496 nationals from different countries who got stuck in Maldives due to travel restrictions were able to leave the country with chartered flights in the last few days. Meanwhile on 30 May, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has revealed that 43 children

below the age of 10 are among those infected with COVID-19.

700 Indian nationals in the Maldives will be repatriated back to their country in an Indian navy ship.

The Maldives government has assured that no additional fees will be charged on tourists who visit the

archipelago when the island nation reopens its borders to tourists.

Myanmar: Four new cases confirmed in the previous 24 hours, taking the total to 228 including six fatalities and 138 recoveries. WFP provided logistical support to transport essential medical supplies donated by WHO, along with several humanitarian professionals to assist Covid-19 programmes. It was the fourth chartered flight from WFP and the first under the “WFP’s Global Logistic Service Provision Plan”. 13 IDP camps from Rakhine received medical supplies and masks from state authorities on 28 May. Parliament has approved some US$2.5 billion in funds over the past week to cover public expenses, including money to finance the government’s response to COVID-19, said U Maung Maung Win, deputy minister of Planning, Finance and Industry. Funds targeting COVID-19, including $700 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), ¥30 billion from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and $250 million from the World Bank’s International Development Association, have been approved. Meanwhile, financing for the longer term growth and development of the Myanmar economy was also approved. These include $60million from the Asian Development Bank to establish Myanmar’s first Credit Guarantee Corporation and €33 million from Austria’s Unicredit Bank to create e-IDs for the country’s population registry. The government will also borrow K1.3 trillion from the Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM)

to plug the budget deficit for fiscal 2019-20. This is expected to be around 20 percent of total borrowings to fund the deficit. The World Bank on 29 May approved US$350 million in International Development Association (IDA) credit to increase power generation in Myanmar and help the country meet a national goal of providing each citizen with access to electricity by 2030. It also approved $110 million in additional financing for the Essential Health Services Access Project (EHSAP), implemented nationwide since 2015. The state administration on 28 May extended the countrywide restrictions on public gathering and other preventive measures until 15 June. However, the Health Ministry lifted the ‘stay at home’ orders in four townships in Yangon after showing improvements in the preventive measures. The Union government has ordered all staff to return office as usual. Previously, half of the staff were only asked to report their offices by the government. Around 1,450 Myanmar national returned home from Thailand and Singapore in the last few days. A survey reveals that more than 300,000 Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand have been facing unemployment issues. The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement has extended the closure of all preschools and nurseries across the country until 15 June. Philippines: As per the Department of Health (DoH), there were 18,086 confirmed cases including 957 deaths and 3,909 recoveries. The transition into more relaxed quarantine measures mounted some concerns as there were increasing numbers of new cases; however, the DoH clarified that of the recent tally only few were “fresh cases” while the rest were from delayed reports. DoH was clearing all backlogs and starting from 1 June, it will change its data reporting to differentiate new cases from those reported late. The Philippines weather bureau forecasts that two to three tropical cyclones could develop this month. The Inter-Cluster Coordination Group will convene this week a technical review of typhoon preparedness and response protocols in light of the experience gained from Typhoon Vongfong and the Covid-19 context. The Philippines will allow nearly all economic sectors to resume operations. President Rodrigo Duterte is offering cash and goods to induce city-dwellers to move out of the greater capital region in an ambitious programme called "Back to the Province".

INFO FROM PUBLIC SOURCES Afghanistan: The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Afghanistan has climbed to 15,205.

Afghan government and Taliban representatives are expected to begin online talks in mid-June in a bid to

end the conflict in the country.

More than 15,000 stranded Afghans have flown home from the UAE aboard over 100 flights.

Bangladesh: Bangladesh lifted its lockdown on 31 May, with millions heading back to work in densely

populated cities and towns. The lifting comes as Bangladesh reported its biggest daily jump in infections

on 31 May, with 2,545 new cases and a record 40 deaths.

Bhutan: As of 28 May, a total of 31,257 applications were received for the Druk Gyalpo’s Relief Kidu

(DGRK), of which 68 percent or 21,195 had applied in April. The relief kidu was granted as a temporary

relief for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Finance minister will unveil new budget on 1 June.

Brunei: Brunei Darussalam performed better in political and security, socio-economic resilience,

infrastructure and public health vulnerabilities in the 2019 Global Health Security Index (GHS) study

developed by The Economist Intelligence Unit and John Hopkins University which ranks countries based

on their preparedness to face a pandemic. It also scored well in the Rapid Response Pillar with 100 per

cent in trade and travel restrictions, immunization (98 per cent), access to communications infrastructure

(92.3 per cent), laboratory system (66.7 per cent) and commitment to sharing biological data, genetic and

specimens (66.7 per cent).

After a long break due to the COVID-19 outbreak, schools will reopen on 2 June in phases starting with

students sitting for examinations such as Years 6, 10 Express and 11. Measures adopted include spaced-

out sitting arrangements in classes, canteen and social distancing measures in drop-off and pick-up zones.

Cambodia: A Cambodian peacekeeper in Mali succumbed to COVID-19.

Six NGOs – Child Fund, Plan International, Save The Children, SOS Children Villages, Terre des Hommes

International Federation and World Vision – have come together to ask the government to put children at

the heart of the COVID-19 response.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng asked the administration in localities that border

Thailand to increase professional measures at border checkpoints to prevent Cambodian workers from

entering Thailand, which will shut its border until 30 June to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

DPRK: North Korea plans to begin reopening schools nationwide in phases early this month. The state

media also reported that North Korea is encouraging non-face-to-face services at restaurants and grocery

stores, such as picking up to-go orders.

Fiji: Fiji’s COVID-19 tracing mobile app is expected to be ready by this week. The Care Fiji mobile app has

been developed by the Singaporean government.

Fiji’s Tourism Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Stoeckel has confirmed that they have progressed into

Stage Two of their Market Re-entry Plan which was developed to coordinate an aligned return to market

across all its international destinations.

China has injected US$100,000 and medical supplies to help in Fiji’s fight against COVID-19. The supplies

include 200,000 face masks, 200,000 pairs of surgical gloves, 50,000 protective suits, 10,000 COVID-19

test kits and 300 infrared thermometers.

India: The nationwide tally of cases has crossed 1.9 lakh [ndlr: 1lakh= 100,000] after a record single-day

jump of 8,392 people testing positive in the last 24 hours. The total cases in the country stood at 190,535

including 5,394 deaths.

India has said it would begin a major relaxation of the lockdown from early June but has extended the

measures until June 30 in high-risk zones.

Iran: Iran said its caseload of infections passed over 150,000 on 31 May- 151,466.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the statistics of patients and recovered people show that Iran’s

medical staff and the nation have a good record.

Laos: The government has lifted more of the restrictions put in place, enabling people to gradually return

to a ‘new normal’. Preschools, kindergartens, and the remaining classes of primary and secondary schools

(whose final-year classes resumed earlier) – will reopen on 2 June. The transport of goods across

international borders will return to normal. Night markets and cinemas can reopen, investment projects,

factories and businesses can resume operations as normal.

Mongolia: The total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Mongolia grew to 185 after six more people tested

positive on 31 May.

Nepal: The Nepal government extended the nationwide lockdown until 14 June and has also decided to

deploy the Army in the worst-hit areas. The government has also decided to suspend all domestic and

international flights until 30 June.

Pakistan: Pakistan’s cases surged past 70,000 on 31 May and death toll crossed 1,500. A crucial meeting

of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) to be presided by Prime Minister Imran Khan will be held

on 1 June to decide the future strategy. Meanwhile, on 30 May, the government declared wearing of masks

mandatory at crowded places, markets and in public transport. The capital administration has decided to

fine violators Rs3,000.

Due to shortage of consumables used in PCR machine for the last five days, the newly-established

laboratory at Ayub Teaching Hospital has stopped Covid-19 tests.

Papua New Guinea: The government is releasing K44.5 million from its coronavirus stimulus package to

support micro, small, and medium enterprises.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is working closely with the Western Highlands

Provincial Health Authority to prepare for Covid-19 patients and enhance the capacity of Mount Hagen

Hospital by setting up a dedicated isolation unit. ICRC also assisted the hospital by establishing two pre-

triage tents for the screening of outpatients, the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for staff,

and material for infection prevention and control.

PR China: China reported the highest daily increase in coronavirus cases in nearly three weeks with 16

new infections discovered on 31 May, as the number of so-called imported cases jumped in south-western

Sichuan province.

China will defer income tax payments for small companies with thin profit margins, as well as individually-

owned businesses, to help them resume business and production, said the State Taxation Administration.

China’s new law implemented from 1 June provides for heavier penalties for organizations or individuals

threatening the safety of medics and harming their dignity.

Hong Kong: Hong Kong has confirmed its first locally transmitted cases (2) in more than two weeks, taking

the number to 1,085.

Taiwan: 49 days with no new confirmed COVID-19 cases.

ROK: The government will inspect about 38,000 construction sites and manufacturing workplaces as a

precautionary measure to prevent coronavirus infections, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on 31 May,

after a cluster infection broke out at a logistics center near Seoul.

President Moon Jae-in announced plans on 1 June for a string of big-spending government projects,

including the Korean version of the New Deal, to ride out the economic crisis from COVID-19, presenting

South Korea's "pacesetting" economic vision. The government is expected to submit a related bill,

reportedly worth around 30 trillion Won ($24 Billion), to the National Assembly later this week.

Singapore: Muslim couples will be allowed to get married in person again at the Registry of Muslim

Marriages (ROMM) and mosques in June. Meanwhile, social services and programmes funded by the

Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) will reopen in phases from 2 June.

The Ministry of Heath said all nursing home staff members and residents have been tested. Surveillance

swab tests were conducted on about 13,200 residents and 9,000 staff, only five have tested positive.

Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka has extended support to a landmark COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP)

which was officially launched on 29 May in Geneva. Thirty countries and multiple international partners and

institutions have signed up to support C-TAP an initiative aimed at making vaccines, tests, treatments and

other health technologies to fight COVID-19 accessible to all.

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has warned of a second wave of the coronavirus

as crowds violated a quarantine curfew on 30 May and gathered in parts of Kotagala to pay their respects

to former Minister Arumugam Thondaman.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa presented to Cabinet a report containing complete details of assistance

received by Sri Lanka from foreign countries and organisations in funds or medical equipment. In addition

to assistance from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the

World Bank, the report also contains lists of what was given by China, Japan, India, South Korea, the US

and several other nations.

As of 27 May, 42,522 persons from 123 countries were seeking to return to Sri Lanka. Of these, migrant

workers amounted to 34,881 of which 20,893 are living in the Middle East, while 4,961 were short term visa

holders, and 2,016 were students.

Thailand: Thailand's parliament passed a 1.9 trillion Baht ($58 billion) economic support package on 31

May to ease the impact of the coronavirus. The legislation, comprising three bills, include a government

plan to borrow 1 trillion baht and central bank measures worth another 900 billion baht in soft loans and

support for corporate bonds.

A total of 251 Thai citizens stranded in the United Kingdom arrived home.

Phuket reopens all entry and exit points by land and water on 1 June; the airport remained closed to

international passenger flights.

Timor-Leste: Timor-Leste has officially reopened churches for daily and weekly Eucharistic celebrations.

Vietnam: Vietnam reported no new cases, with its total confirmed cases remaining at 328 and zero deaths

so far. The country has recorded no local transmission for 45 straight days.

344 Vietnamese citizens on 31 May were repatriated from Singapore.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has given permission for Chinese traders to enter Vietnam to buy

lychees in the northern province of Bac Giang.

Global

EU Reaffirms Support to WHO: The European Union on 30 May said that it would continue to back the World Health Organization and requested the US to reconsider its decision. Brazil: The country observed a record number of 33,274 new cases on 30 May, lifting up the national tally to 498,440 confirmed cases. The death toll also increased to 28,834, with 956 new deaths in the last 24

hours. However, Brazilian states are preparing to ease quarantine restrictions despite warnings from public health experts. The US has delivered two million doses of the antimalarial medicine hydroxychloroquine to Brazil. The country is also expecting to receive 1,000 ventilators from US soon. France: new cases continue to decline, with 14,322 patients currently in hospitals, down from 14,380 a day earlier. From 2 June, France will enter in the second phase in the gradual lifting of the nationwide lockdown. Italy: The Higher Health Institute of Italy believes that a new wave of Covid-19 infections is possible this autumn. As of 31 May, Italy recorded 232,997 cases and 33,415 fatalities and 157,500 recoveries. Russia: 9,268 new infections on 31 May, the total confirmed cases reached 405,843 including 171,883 recoveries and 4,693 deaths. Russian Health Ministry has informed that the country’s first anti-Covid-19 vaccine will go on clinical trial by mid-June. Spain: The Health Ministry on 31 May reported the lowest number of new cases since 6 March -with 106 new infections, taking the national total to 239,479 with 27,127 victims. UK: Most of England’s 18,000 primary schools will open from Monday 1 June. However, some analysts say that around one million children in England – half of the country’s registered primary pupils– are likely to stay at home as many parents, councils and teachers remain skeptical. As per the Cancer Research UK, around 2.1m patients have been awaiting screenings for breast, cervical and bowel cancer while another 290,000 people have missed out on urgent referrals. UK had 276,156 infections and 38,571 fatalities as of 1 June. US: Several states and cities in US have begun moving carefully toward reopening key businesses. The total number of confirmed cases reached almost 1.8 million with 104,383 deaths.
