Attendance RequirementsStudents who are required to self-isolate will be excused from on-campus face-to-face classes, but may be able to participate in online classes if they are not too ill to do so.

Attendance policies should be revised to eliminate incentives for students who are ill or self-isolating to come to campus.

Page 8: COVID-19 Provost Webinar Intro by Provost...Fall Schedule of Classes New valid class time slots created a 25-minute gap between classes. Many classes were relocated to new rooms. The

Attendance RequirementsConsider developing alternative ways for self-isolating or ill students to participate in class discussions and activities:• Synchronous online participation• Reviewing a recording of the day's class• Asynchronous alternate activities, such as

short reflection papers addressing the day's topics

Final ExamsAll final exams will be online. Think about how you can best assess student learning through synchronous online final exams,or make plans for alternative (perhaps asynchronous) end-of-term assessments.

If you are concerned about academic misconduct, contact OIT to learn more about technology options for final exams.

Cleaning Classroom Technology

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The coronavirus may remain on plastic and stainless steel surfaces for up to three days. High-touch surfaces such as shared technologies should be cleaned routinely. Wipes containing 70% alcohol are approved for use on technology.   NOTE: Some types of technologies that cannot be easily cleaned should be assigned to individuals Resources – CDC’s website on Cleaning and Disinfection for Community Facilities and Schools https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/organizations/cleaning-disinfection.html https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/guidance-ihe-response.html    NIH report on stability of coronavirus on surfaces https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/new-coronavirus-stable-hours-surfaces    Guidance on caring for computers and technologies from manufacturers https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204172 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4023504/surface-clean-and-care-for-your-surface

What do online classrooms look like?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
For some, the classroom will be in Canvas and Zoom. From the students’ point of view, a meaningful integration of Canvas and Zoom will be critical. Instructors will need adequate cameras and sound amplification. (qty 250) Webcams may not be here by the time classes start, but will be distributed as they arrive according to need.
Page 13: COVID-19 Provost Webinar Intro by Provost...Fall Schedule of Classes New valid class time slots created a 25-minute gap between classes. Many classes were relocated to new rooms. The

What do hybrid classrooms look like?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Most classrooms hosting hybrid sections are slated to be outfitted with technologies to support teaching in-person and via Zoom simultaneously. That includes Cynap systems, webcams, and sound amplification where needed. That will allow instructors to show multiple views on the screen to in-person and online students. An example might be a screen split between instructor view, document camera image, and laptop image. Our goal is to make the experience work well for students no matter their location and to ensure that classroom recordings have good video and sound for students who may need to view later. As a heads-up, supply chain issues mean that OIT is installing equipment as it arrives.  There are two umbrella approaches to teaching hybrid courses depending on comfort level: Instructor uses laptop only to project for in-person students and deliver Zoom-based instruction to online students. This is an option in any of the classrooms. Instructors also have the option to make full use of wall-mounted cameras, sound amplification, and using Cynap to connect multiple inputs.  Note: Supply chain issues and delays are a factor; we are installing as we receive equipment.

Lab Classrooms

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We had 32 responses to the survey. Most respondents indicated the desire to pre-record demonstrations. We have ordered equipment and created a process for supplying technology to instructors for pre-recording.  In addition, lab courses supporting hybrid instruction are on the list for classroom technology consideration.

OIT Support for Fall

Presenter
Presentation Notes
OIT will be providing the range of services to support teaching that you already expect. They have also been very hard at work creating "how to" documentation for classrooms as well as a robust web site to support new teaching modalities for the fall semester. Some resources to be aware of include: Teaching Face-to-Face and Online Simultaneously – oit.utk.edu/teaching-modalities (coming soon) Get help with Classroom Technology – classrooms.utk.edu Get Support, Latest News – oit.utk.edu Training sessions for instructors will be announced soon.

Positions to Support Instruction

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Finally, our committee is in the process of working with RJ and others on campus to provide additional support for teaching with new modalities.  Classroom Producers provide support for classes using hybrid modalities, particularly those that utilize simultaneously teaching to in-class students AND students attending remotely via Zoom. The Classroom Producer will run Zoom meetings while the instructor teaches and will attend to the Zoom chat feature, answering questions when possible and keeping the instructor apprised of activity in the Zoom environment. Canvas Producers provide support for classes utilizing Canvas in online and hybrid modalities, or instructors who do not have GTAs. These would also be available to GTAs teaching those kinds of classes. Canvas Producers will be assigned the Designer Role in Canvas courses and will assist instructors with uploading and linking to materials, creating discussion boards, and in developing and deploying quizzes and assignments in Canvas.

Student ComplianceAddress the situation• Have a conversation with the student and inform them of the

expectations in place.• In classroom/lab/workspace settings, you can offer them a mask

(provided by the university) or• Give them the opportunity to retrieve their own mask (if easily

accessible).

If the student refuses to wear a mask, you are empowered to ask them to leave the classroom/lab/workspace and mark them absent for the day.

If the student returns to the classroom/lab/workspace, etc. without wearing a mask and/or refuses to do so again, you can consider referring the student to Student Conduct & Community Standards (SCCS).

Page 20: COVID-19 Provost Webinar Intro by Provost...Fall Schedule of Classes New valid class time slots created a 25-minute gap between classes. Many classes were relocated to new rooms. The

Student ComplianceConsider referringAfter addressing issues of continued non-compliance (3 times) with a student you may consider referring them to SCCS for non-compliance.

Reporting Form

DocumentSave documentation that you addressed the issue with the student(s) in case the need to refer to SCCS arises. Please retain a copy of your email or create documentation of the conversation with the student(s).

If you have a verbal conversation with a student, SCCS recommends following up with an email to the student summarizing the conversation. Clearly explain the expectations moving forward and possible consequences.
