• Canada saw a loss of over 1 million jobs in March

• Unemployment rate climbed 2.2 points to 7.8%

• Information, culture and recreation down 16,800 (14%).

• Wholesale/retail trade down 40,000 employees (9.9%).

• Broadly, services fell 6.5% • Goods-producing sector unchanged;

agriculture and manufacturing off setting a drop in construction.

BRITISH COLUMBIA - Jobs

• Labour Force contracted by 80,400 in March

• Number of jobs decreased by 132,400

• Compared to March 2019, 151,000 fewer positions

• Unemployment rate still second lowest in Canada at 7.2%

• Metro Vancouver recorded 89% of the province’s job losses, with a drop of 8% or 117,000 persons.

• Unemployment rose to 7.5% from 4.6% in Feb. (up 2.5% from Mar 2019)

• Concentration of the decline reflects the disproportionate impact on services-producing sectors.

Port and Airport Volumes

• Departures from country’s 10 busiest airports are down 84%

• At YVR, over spring break, passenger volumes were down to around 10,000-20,000 per day (compared to 70,000/ day in 2019)

• For the Port, vessel calls only down 3% in March; total containers handled for Q1 down 11%

• Q1 2020 industrial market statistics do not show significant impacts due to COVID-19

• Q2 will provide more information. • Vacancy is hovering near record lows - this

is the 12th consecutive quarter with a vacancy rate below 2.0%.

• Region-wide, vacancy rates decreased by 20 basis points to 2.7% while Vancouver’s downtown core is at 1.3%, a 70 basis point decrease from the previous quarter.
