The front- end of the dairy sector has always been dynamic and active as brands try to gain market space in their own respective geographies. The back-end of the dairy space however, has been relatively slow as the majority of dairy-farmers are conservative in exploring new possibilities and remain dependent on traditional ways of managing dairy-farms. While the front- end is getting connected with latest IT platforms despite small volumes and size of the sale, the back-end struggles to adopt basic mechanisation due to sheer unavailability or lack of awareness or financial resources. The conversion to farm mechanisation today is less than 1% of total milk produced by the largest milk producing country in the world. This means that to remain globally competitive, in the coming years India will need to accelerate its farm modernisation and move to commercial dairy farming at a faster pace. Indeed, it is imperative that the current farmers’ base gets automated and mechanised latest by 2030 in order to catch up with the competitive world. There are certain steps which are being proposed by the dairy ministry, NDDB and various other policy-making platforms and we welcome them. We would like to extend our complete support to ensure evolution of our farmers into complete modern dairy-farmers who are integrated with the world with the help of latest technology and who support traceability in the entire value chain. Veeru’s Mantra

From the MD’s Desk

The milk and milk products consumer today is lucky to have many choices of brands and value-added products. Not very long ago, the consumer had to walk to a dairy-farm or so called ‘Tabela‘ to get his or her milk, while today he / she just clicks on an app and gets their choice of milk delivered at home with options for refusing or cancelling; increasing or decreasing the quantity. The basket of value-added products is continuously evolving with the entry of multiple options of yoghurt, ice-cream, sweets and fermented products. The packaging for milk products is becoming more and more

attractive with communications targeting young and mobile consumers. The front-end of the dairy sector has always been dynamic and active as brands try to gain market space in their own respective geographies.

The back-end of the dairy space however, has been relatively slow as the majority of dairy-farmers are conservative in exploring new possibilities and remain dependent on traditional ways of managing dairy-farms. While the front-end is getting connected with latest IT platforms despite small volumes and size of the sale, the back-end struggles to adopt basic mechanisation due to sheer unavailability or lack of awareness or financial resources. The conversion to farm mechanisation today is less than 1% of total milk produced by the largest milk producing country in the world. This means that to remain globally competitive, in the coming years India will need to accelerate its farm modernisation and

move to commercial dairy farming at a faster pace. Indeed, it is imperative that the current farmers’ base gets automated and mechanised latest by 2030 in order to catch up with the competitive world. Nagpur Veterinary College recently organized a one day state level workshop on “Scientific Gaushala Management “on 28th July, 2019, which was inaugurated by Maharashra ministers, Hon’ble Shri Sudhir Mungantiwar (Minister of Finance Planning & Forests) and Hon’ble Shri Mahadev Jankar (Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development & Fisheries Development).

The objective of the workshop, which was attended by over 200 Gaushala workers and volunteers, was to educate them on scientific management of such cow shelters. As part of its ongoing campaign to educate dairy farmers on mastitis prevention, DeLaval conducted on-site demonstrations at various dairy farms in Anand, Gujarat, including Surya Dairy Farm, which is entirely run by two sisters, Sonalben and Mokshaben. These two women entrepreneurs have also been featured in DeLaval’s 2019 calendar.

Mr. Mukund Rane, Head – Marketing & Channel Development led the DeLaval team. During the demonstrations, detection of sub

clinical mastitis with the help of DeLaval CMT Kit and preventing udder infection with DeLaval Lactifence teat dips, were explained to the farmers. A few tests were also conducted on high-yielding cows at these farms, and the dairy farmers were shown how important it was to conduct these tests regularly to prevent mastitis, when CMT scores indicated the presence of somatic cells at early stage, a sign of sub-clinical mastitis.

How to test if cows have sub clinical mastitis?

A cow with sub-clinical mastitis does not have abnormal looking milk or other clinical signs such as a swollen or painful udder, but the udder can be infected with bacteria and the somatic cell count can be very high, resulting in milk rejection by the milk collector or processor.

The California Mastitis Test (CMT) is a rapid test to help determine somatic cell counts (SCC) in a specific cow. The test can also be conducted on bucket and bulk tank milk samples to help determine somatic cell counts (SCC) of the entire herd.

DeLaval DCC for accurate measurement of Somatic Cell CountThe DeLaval DCC is a digital somatic cell counter for accurate measurement of somatic cells on the farm or in the milk collection centre. A small sample of milk is sucked into a cassette and the cassette is placed in the machine. The Somatic Cell count will be displayed within 1 minute.

How to do the test? A small sample of milk from each quarter is collected into a plastic paddle that has 4 cups marked A, B, C and D. An equal amount of DeLaval CMT liquid is added to the milk. The paddle is rotated to mix the contents. In approximately 10 seconds, read the score while continuing to rotate the paddle. Because the reaction disappears within 20 seconds, the test must be read quickly.

How to read the resultsThe DeLaval CMT liquid reacts with the somatic cells and the mixture thickens or forms a gel in proportion to the amount of infection present.

CMT Score Average SCC (Cells per ml.) Description of reaction

N 0 - 200,000 No thickening, homogeneous and thin.

T (trace) 200,000 - 500,000 Slight thickening. Reaction disappears in 10 seconds.

1 500,000 - 1,500,000 Distinct thickening, no gel formation.

2 1,500,000 - 5,000,000 Thickens immediately, begins to gel, levels in the bottom of cup.

3 Over 5,000,000 Gel is formed.
