DEGREES Associate of Arts Degree (AA)

This degree is designed to specifically meet the student’s educational objectives and needs through the completion of the general education distribution requirement. The courses are equivalent to lower-division courses offered at Kansas Regent’s universities.

Associate of Science Degree (AS)

This degree is designed to prepare students for transfer with advanced standing to 4-year colleges or universities. These programs are for students who plan to major in a science related discipline.

Associate of General Studies (AGS)

This degree is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and greater philosophical appreciation for lifelong learning.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

This degree is designed to prepare students for entry into an occupation or closely related cluster of occupations. The objective of the AAS degree is to enhance employment opportunities.

ACCOUNTING (Associate of Arts)

In all of our accounting programs, not only will you learn about accounting theory, techniques, and practices; but you will also be exposed to the basics of business. Accounting is known as the “language of business” because the terms and concepts are generally used in all fields of business. The accountant is the key figure in the reporting, analysis, and evaluation of relevant financial information to various users. The impact and importance accounting information has to other business and related fields provide many career opportunities for accountants. To round out your education, you will take communications classes as well as arts and sciences classes in the social sciences and humanities.

ADMINISTRATOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM The health care industry is currently experiencing a nationwide shortage of qualified health care workers, including administrators of long term care facilities.

Cowley College offers the Administrator in Training Program (AIT), designed to accommodate the flexibility students need today. Students can begin the program at any time. Students have one year to complete the Cowley College required 480-clock hour practicum at a KDHE approved long-term health care facility in Kansas, with the option of an extension. Students are also required to complete one online class - ALH1676 Health Care Finance (three credit hours). The State of Kansas also requires a Bachelor’s degree.

This program is one of the oldest and most popular in the state and enjoys the highest enrollment for a program of its nature.

It has open enrollment, which means a student may start classes at any time

The program serves students statewide

No on-campus classes are required

Program Coordinator is a Licensed Adult Care Administrator

Tuition costs are low

13 credit hour course: ALH 5213 Long Term Adult Health Care Administrator.

Cowley College is also approved by the KDHE to provide continuing education classes to those who hold a current adult care home administrator license. These classes are the ‘administrative’ type and can be taken entirely online. For more information, go to the Cowley College Web site.


AGRIBUSINESS (Associate of Arts Degree)

An Agribusiness degree can open up multiple opportunities in the field of agricultural business, agricultural economics, and other related business administration careers. The Agribusiness degree at Cowley College provides students with the basic courses that will transfer to state colleges and universities.

AGRICULTURE (PRE) (Associate of Science Degree)

The Pre-Agriculture curriculum is a two-year transfer program designed to provide basic knowledge in the field of agricultural science. Students who graduate with the transfer program are ready to move on to a four-year institution. Many opportunities lie within the agriculture industry. The Associate of Science degree is recommended for students pursuing a 4-year degree in any agriculture science field, (i.e. Animal Science, Milling Science, Soil or Grain Science, Pre-Vet, Food Science, etc.) The program offers core courses in chemistry and biology to prepare students for a four-year program.

ANTHROPOLOGY (Associate of Arts Degree)

Anthropology is a multidisciplinary, scientific study of the human condition. Through the traditional four fields of cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological/physical anthropology, and linguistics, anthropologists examine every aspect of humanity in a holistic, comparative, and evolutionary way. With an Associate of Arts degree in anthropology from Cowley College, students will have a solid foundation for a bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university. ART (Associate of Arts Degree)

The Cowley College Fine Arts program is a rigorous study of the fundamentals of art. Students will leave the program with not only a comprehensive portfolio of work but also a thorough understanding of the formal elements of art. The Associates of Arts degree from Cowley College offers an introduction to various artistic media. Drawing, design, painting, sculpture, and ceramics are courses that illustrate artistic diversity to students. CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT If you are interested in helping others, are a hard worker and enjoy encouraging that “satisfied” smile from someone in need, then working as a CNA (certified nursing assistant) may be for you. The CNA has the privilege of meeting the basic needs of our citizens who need it most.

This satisfying profession can be a prerequisite for the nursing program, or a stand-alone opportunity. Classes are taught in the Winfield Allied Health Education Center, Mulvane Center, and on the main campus in Arkansas City. In addition to the CNA course, we offer other courses for the currently working CNA:

The Home Health Aide class instructs the CNA how to help elderly, convalescent, or disabled persons live in their own homes instead of in a health care facility.

The Restorative Aide class trains the CNA to assist therapy departments in long-term care facilities, acute care facilities, and to carry out rehabilitative plans of care in the client’s home.

The Certified Medication Aide class allows the CNA to pass medications and treatments to long-term care residents.

The Child Care Certificate offers advanced course work for those seeking employment within a childcare center or as a licensed in-home childcare provider. Course work will meet competency requirements for the CDA certificate. Course work provides opportunities for continuing education credit needed to maintain current employment. CREATIVE WRITING (Associate of Arts Degree)

Writing skills are used in all areas of work and education, and students who master these skills can achieve success in numerous areas of interest. Since writing majors are employable in so many fields that include high levels of critical thinking, the Creative Writing curriculum includes not only required basic courses but literature requirements as well. Writing majors also have additional course opportunities in the mass communications and arts areas, as well as the opportunity for electives in other areas of interest since all knowledge gained can enhance writing. This diverse background prepares students for university specialties and transfer to four- year institutions, entering into the workforce, and furthering overall writing skills to help meet personal goals. CRIMINAL JUSTICE (Associate of Arts Degree)

The Criminal Justice program at Cowley College prepares a student for a successful career in law enforcement and corrections. There is a nationwide trend toward requiring that all criminal justice professionals have at least a two- year degree, and Cowley College Associate Degree in Criminal Justice fulfills that promise. This is an ideal time to become a professional in the field of criminal justice. In response to the rise in crime rates, increasing drug abuse, and a growing population, the public demands a strong response to the violence and disorder, causing employment opportunities to increase dramatically in recent years. Career opportunities exist in many areas: local police departments and organizations, county and state police departments, corrections, environmental protection services, juvenile facilities, crime laboratories, courts and judicial offices, and community-based corrections (probation and parole).

DENTISTRY (PRE) (Associate of Science Degree)

Dentists are professionals. It is their job to diagnose, treat, and prevent disorders of the teeth, gums, and mouth. Dentists advise clients about the care of their teeth and refer them to specialists, if needed. Students take at least three years of pre-dental studies and then four years of dental school. The pre-dental studies are similar to pre-medicine studies and mainly include science courses.

DIETETICS (Associate of Science Degree)

An Associate of Science degree with an emphasis in Dietetics (science of food and nutrition) will prepare a student to continue to a four-year university to compete a baccalaureate degree in dietetics. Upon completion of the B.S. degree requirements, an accredited dietetic internship, and passing the national credentialing exam, Registered Dietitians (RDs) can work in many settings, including health care facilities such as hospitals and extended care facilities. Dietitians also may be found working in public health settings, such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) programs, food stamp programs, programs for the elderly, non-commercial and/or commercial foodservice operations, or in private practice counseling.

EDUCATION - ELEMENTARY & EARLY CHILDHOOD (Associate of Arts Degree)

To teach young children in Kansas public schools, teachers must be certified by the State of Kansas upon completion of a four-year degree. Students interested in elementary education (K-6) or early childhood education (birth to age 8) is encouraged to complete the Associate of Arts Degree prior to transfer. EDUCATION/SECONDARY (Associate of Arts Degree)

To teach in a Kansas public school (grades 6-12); teachers must be certified by the State of Kansas upon completion of a four-year degree. Since secondary education is not a major at the baccalaureate level, students need to select a major and a teaching minor from among those disciplines taught in high schools. Since admission to secondary education is competitive, completion of these courses alone does not guarantee admission. A minimum grade point average determined by the transfer institution and passage of a basic skills test are required for program admission. Most people are acutely aware of the value of keeping physically fit and eating the right foods. As our changing work habits create more leisure time, organized recreational activities become more important. Whether it is teaching young people how to get in shape and remain physically fit for the rest of their lives, or working in the recreational field, planning organizing and directing activities to help people enjoy the free time they have recreation and physical education are fields with expanding opportunities. These are designed as transfer programs. Students can complete the first two years at Cowley College, and then transfer to a four-year college or university to finish a bachelor’s degree. Because of this, and the local, regional, and national employer needs, Cowley College has developed a transfer degree that will prepare students to become leaders in health care. HISTORY (Associate of Arts Degree)

Students who major in history at Cowley College complete a well-rounded curriculum that leads to an Associate of Arts degree. With this degree, students will complete the course requirements necessary to transfer to a 4-year college or university for a bachelor’s degree. A history major prepares students for a variety of career fields, including government, social service, historical preservation, social science, and research. LAW (PRE) (Associate of Arts Degree)

A well-rounded background is critical to acceptance into a university law program. The American Bar Association encourages a challenging course schedule rather than a particular degree. Major universities have followed this approach to undergraduate studies for those going into law and suggest that a focus on the arts, science or mathematics can provide the skills needed to succeed in law school as effectively as the more traditional history, ethics or political science. NUMERICAL CONTROL PROGRAMMING (Vocational Certificate B)

In the Numerical Controlled Programming classes at Cowley College, students are trained on Mastercam, which is the industry standard program for programming CNC machines. Students will learn how to create geometry, turn that geometry into solids and surfaces, and then program the parts created with toolpaths so that they can then be machined. This will include programming lathes, mills, and routers. Students will learn how to pick the proper tools, calculate feeds and speeds along with how to program multi-axis machines. The prerequisite General Education classes for the Associate of Applied Science degree program are comprised of many different disciplines that make the paramedic better rounded and should enhance career mobility. It is strongly recommended that the student complete as much of the General Education requirements as possible before starting the technical paramedic classes. Prior to starting the paramedic program, the student must have EMT or AEMT certification or be finishing a course that would allow the student to obtain EMT or AEMT certification early in the paramedic program. Students typically start the paramedic technical classes during the second year of school. Technical classes are provided on a block scheduling system (finish one entire class before starting another). During this phase of the AAS completion, the student will have classes almost every day for the program. Please note that the schedule above is for the 12-month paramedic program; other schedules add approximately one semester to the timeframe of completion.

Pharmacists prepare and dispense drugs prescribed by doctors. They also advise patients, doctors, and other health care professionals on proper doses and drug interactions. PHYSICAL THERAPY (PRE) (Associate of Science Degree)

Physical therapists provide services that help patients restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of those suffering from injuries or disease. Their patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as lower back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. They design the treatment programs, and assess the patient’s physical abilities and progress, maintain statistical and clinical records, confer with other health care professionals, and often develop and implement health promotion programs.

PRE-ATHLETIC TRAINING (Associate of Science Degree)

The duty of an Athletic Trainer is the management of injuries and conditions that occur during, or as the result of, physical activity. This management includes injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, and health care maintenance. To become a Certified Athletic Trainer you must earn a bachelor’s degree from a college or university with an accredited program in athletic training. Cowley College two-year Associate of Science degree is designed to offer the classes that you would normally take in the first two years at a four-year institution. After you graduate from Cowley College, you will be ready to transfer to the accredited four-year school of your choice to finish your education in athletic training. SOCIAL WORK (Associate of Arts Degree)

The profession of social work is devoted to helping people function optimally in their environment by providing direct and indirect services to individuals, families, groups, and communities. Time and talents of social workers are also devoted to studying and helping to solve social problems in American society. Bachelor’s degree programs in social work prepare students for careers in public and private agencies such as child welfare agencies, housing agencies, rehabilitation agencies, the mental health field, and other helping fields. After completing your bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW), social workers are encouraged to take the state board test to be licensed (LBSW). After licensing, social workers are able to find employment in numerous agencies and with the state government. Students should complete the Associate of Arts degree prior to transfer and should be aware that it may be necessary to take additional credit hours depending on the requirements of the intended transfer institution. Since admission to social work programs is competitive, completion of the recommended courses alone does not guarantee admission. VETERINARY MEDICINE (PRE) (Associate of Science Degree)

Veterinarians identify and treat medical problems in animals. They treat injuries, set broken bones, perform surgery, prescribe medicines, and administer vaccinations. By these methods and by doing research, vets help to protect people from diseases carried by animals. The minimum requirement of most veterinary colleges is two years of a science undergraduate degree, but a bachelor’s degree is usually recommended.

WELDING TECHNOLOGY (Associate of Applied Science Degree)

Welding Technology is an associate degree or certificate program that combines practical, theoretical, and technical training in welding fabrication. Manual, semiautomatic, and automatic processes using oxy fuel and arc welding processes in SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and plasma are covered. Advanced courses deal with application of welding codes to develop the expertise needed to understand specifications used in industry. Training is done on both structural and piping materials in mild steel, stainless, and aluminum alloys. Program graduates typically find employment as welding technicians, robotic welding technicians, and technical sales representatives. As such, they are responsible for one or more of the following: welding metal alloys, fabricating metals to specifications, troubleshooting faulty weldments, writing procedures, interpreting conventional and computer-aided prints, and selling and servicing equipment.

WELDING TECHNOLOGY (Vocational Certificate A)

Provides an entry level skills in blueprint reading, safety, shop theory, setup and operation of conventional weld machine tools, and basic skills in a variety of welding processes identified as necessary by welding employers and serves as the foundation for the Associate of Applied Science degree.
