Enjoyment: Reading is a fun way to reach out and connect with someone you miss! Use one of these ideas, or think of one of your own! Record yourself reading a page from a favorite book and send it to a family member. Facetime with a friend and partner read. Read a book to a pet. Call Grandma, Grandpa or another relative and tell them about a book you are reading. Ask them about a book they enjoy.

Second Grade Word Work-aim for 10 minutes of practice a day

Here are some ways to practice: write your spelling words in rainbow colors, write your words 3 times each in shaving cream, write each word in a complete sentence, make a word search for a family member to solve, write a funny paragraph using all of your words.

Here are some word work sites:

Try Reading Bear to practice some Phonics this week. Long e, er, ur, and ir would be a good place to begin or you choose!

Second Grade Writing-Pick from some of the

activities below, remember transition words, good descriptions, capitals, and punctuation. Share your writing with your teacher, if you like. Have fun! What is something you are scared of? What would make it less scary?” Are spiders scary? Would they still be scary if they were pink and fluffy? Are you frightened of clowns? Think of how ridiculous a clown would look like wearing all his clown clothes, but no makeup! Imagine you have $1 million to give away to others. Who will you give money to?” Consider what good you could do if you had the chance to make others’ lives better. Would you give the

money to friends or family members, donate to charity, or fund the next technological or scientific breakthrough?

Write your own comics! https://jarrettlerner.com/activities/

Think of the best amusement park rides you have ever been on. Imagine a ride that you design yourself. Draw a picture of it. Label the different parts. For inspiration watch: Harry Potter Virtual Ride: https://www.travelandleisure.com/attractions/amusement-parks/universal-studios-harry-potter-and-the-forbidden-journey-virtual-

Disney Rides:

https://www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/disney-vacations/watch-disney-rides-on-youtube

Draw a picture of one part of your ride and describe in detail what will happen to the people who ride. What will they see, how will they feel? Use strong descriptive words. Next, write an advertisement that will get

people to come to your ride. Start with a hook (a question is always a good start). Talk about the details of your ride that people will love and why. End it with a conclusion and sell it. Practice reading your advertisement out loud with expression (edit for capitals, punctuation, spelling).

On Friday write an email to your teacher. Include a greeting, 5 sentences, a closing, transition words, and ask a question. When you are done writing, reread your email and edit before sending. Include a photo if you like! We will write you back! [email protected] [email protected]

Second Grade Math

Practice your math skills on Zearn (log on through Clever) for 20 minutes. How many badges can you earn? Have you checked out Khan Academy? It’s free. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-2nd-grade-math IXL is a good site too. www.ixl.com

Here are some application problems to try: Read Carefully, Include a Number Sentence-Show your Thinking, Include a Statement.

1. Ms. DeRemer made 48 cookies. Draw an array to show this. Uh, oh, some cookies fell on the floor, and Rocki quickly ate 6 cookies. Now how many cookies are there? Draw a new array.

2. This year Ms. Perkin read 18 books in January. She read 14 books in February. In March she read 17 books. How many books did Ms. P. read in 3 months? Draw a graph. Include labels.

Plants, part 1: Plant Growth

Watch the video How Does a Seed Become a Plant?

Plants, part 2: Watch the Germinator video to see a fun way to see seeds start to grow.

Follow the steps in the video to

“plant” your seeds. If you have

different kinds of seeds, put them in

different baggies and label them. In our study of plants and organisms we learned that each part of a plant has certain jobs or functions: Leaves, stems and roots work together as a system to help the plant function. Tiny holes in leaves allow plants to take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen and water. Your job this week is to pick a flower or plant that is just starting to grow and sprout and observe it.

1. You can start with a hypothesis such as: I think by the end of the week my flower will grow 4 inches

and the flower will open.

2. Every day write down your observation along with the date. Draw a sketch, measure, and label it. (If

you don’t have a ruler, you can use a string, Legos, or anything you have at home). We have learned to

measure with other items at school.

3. At the end of the week you will be able to see from your observations what has changed and how

much it has grown.

4. Then on Friday write if you proved or disproved your hypotheses. I proved/disproved my hypothesis

because_______________.

Have fun observing!
