Mount Marty Tournament Champions ‘Dons Avenge Loss To USD Men BY JEREMY HOECK [email protected] VERMILLION — As he ran off the court prior to pre- game warmups, Tyler Larson said to a group of on-lookers, “We really need this one.” That goal will have to wait for the University of South Dakota men’s basketball team. For the second game in a row, the Coyotes struggled of- fensively, this time suffering a 66-55 loss to Fort Wayne in Summit League action Thurs- day night at the DakotaDome. “I don’t know what it is, it feels like us as a team we set- tle on things, and we’re not as aggressive on defense,” said USD senior James Hunter, whose 14 points was a team high. Against the pre-season fa- vorite Mastodons (10-11, 3-5), the struggles were mainly on offense for the Coyotes. South Dakota shot 40 per- cent, 24-of-60, to narrowly avoid going under the 40 mark for a fifth consecutive game. And conversely, the Coyotes couldn’t do much to slow down Fort Wayne post Steve Forbes — he was 8-of- 10 for 21 points. “They big-boy’d us in a lot of ways,” USD head coach Craig Smith said. Since a 3-0 start to the league season, the Coyotes (10-12, 4-4) have scored 68, 50 and 55 points and have fallen to the middle of the pack in the league race. “We’ve got to stop settling for what’s easy and what’s open,” said Smith, who added with a smile that there’s probably a reason those shots are open. It wasn’t as though the Coyotes weren’t getting looks, it’s just that the makes were few and far between. The hosts finished 3-of-19 on three-pointers, and are now 5-of-32 from deep in the last two games. “We’re in a rut right now with some things offensively, so it puts a ton of pressure on you defensively,” Smith said. “You have more break- downs and you start gam- bling a little bit more. “It takes some will power and some toughness to grind things out.” Perhaps the one play that epitomized USD’s struggles was on a defensive series midway through the second half. The Mastodons missed a free throw (after making the first), got the rebound and found an open shooter for a corner three. Suddenly, the lead for Fort Wayne was 13 with 9:14 to play. And the Coyotes never got within single digits. “We just have streaks where we don’t score,” Smith said.
