WHAT IS TNEW?Young Revolution will be holding the much anticipated Tshwane Entrepreneurship Week (TNEW) at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria from the 27th till the 31st of August 2012. The conference will gather 250 young entrepreneurs, business owners, decision-makers and business professionals for talks about the concept and development of entrepreneurship in South Africa.

TNEW is designed to inspire and showcase young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35. The conference is also dedicated to celebrating and supporting businesses in Gauteng and around South Africa. The aim of this event is to initiate strategic dialogue between young entrepreneurs, policy makers and service providers, and to help participants gain access to services, support and a world of opportunities.

MEET THE PRODUCER OF TNEW 2012

Lawrence Umukoro is an entrepreneur and producer who has a passion for business and producing theatre, film and live events. He owns and operates Umukoro Produc-tions, a film, theatre and live events production company, currently producing vari-ous events in Pretoria, Perth, Lagos and California. He loves traveling and has to date visted 32 countries in 4 continents.

Lawrence is the co-founder of Young Revolution (presenters of the world famous Strictly HipHop Dance Competition). In its seventh year, Young Revolution is now one of the largest and most popular event houses in Pretoria. Mr. Umukoro was born in Nigeria and educated in South Africa, Australia and the USA. Dr van Vuuren is a Professor at the University of Pretoria and Chair of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Business Management.

He initiated and developed the first Bachelors Degree with specialisation in Entrepreneurship in South Africa and was instrumental in developing the Masters and PhD degrees offered by the Department.

At the age of twenty-five, Dr van Vuuren started the first of four entrepreneurial start-ups as a beginning of an entrepreneurial career.

In 1992 he started an Entrepreneurship Education and Training Company that since then has trained over 4500 delegates all over South Africa and the African continent. He authored articles in various South African journals and in more than 20 inter-national conference proceedings from all over the globe. He has lectured at various universities in South Africa, the USA, New Zealand and in African countries.

MONDAY 27 AUGUSTSteven Ngubeni started his professional career as a Town Planner at Terraplan Associates. He later joined In-Site Design as a Senior Planner. He has also worked as the Director for Technical Services at Emakhazeni Municipality and recently as a Municipal Manager at Victor Khanye Municipality in Mpuma-langa. Ngubeni holds a degree in Town and Regional Planning from the University of Johannesburg.

He has two master’s degrees’ one in Built Environ-ment, specialising in Property Valuation and Eco-nomics, from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Uni-versity, and another in Development Studies, from the University Port Elizabeth.

He has also completed a Doctoral Research Programme with the University of Stellenbosch. He is currently completing a master’s in Public Administration at the same university, with his research focusing on performance management and youth development. Ngubeni is also an activist, having joined the Congress of South African Students in primary school and led the South African Youth Council in Nkangala District, Mpumalanga.

Nkokheli Mzimba or Kheli as he is affection-ately known is an honors degree art student at the University of Fort Hare in Alice. He is involved in art development with the Art Teaching Initiative (ATI) and MTN in the Nkonkobe region of Eastern Cape. His art skills range from drawing and painting to ceramics.

The Gauteng Innovation Competition, an annual contest that seeks innovative solutions in mobile and green technologies will open for new entries on 20 August 2012.

The competition is being implemented by The Innovation Hub, a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA), which is an agency of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (DED).

Launched in December 2011, the competition is one of the Gauteng Innovation Strategy initia-tives directed at addressing efficiency of gov-ernment service delivery by encouraging inno-vation in the mobile and green technology sec-tors. The competition seeks to identify and sup-port the identification and implementation of new technologies and novel business models in local and provincial government.

The Acting GGDA CEO and HOD for DED Mr Khulu Radebe says “Later this year we will be launching the Climate Innovation Centre (CIC), a joint initiative of the World Bank’s infoDev unit and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development. This project is being established with a purpose to spur the growth of the green industries by supporting SMEs with innovative climate change technologies. Innovators who enter this competition will have their climate change technologies supported through the CIC”.

According to McLean Sibanda, the CEO of The Innovation Hub, “The competition will assist in providing innovative solutions that will be used to further improve service delivery by local gov-ernment in Gauteng, as well as create a channel for entrepreneurs with innovative ideas to be supported to commercialise their ideas”.

“The mobile entries of the 2011 competition were of a very high standard and implemented on a diverse mix of platforms. Mobile has become a prominent channel for customer engagement for both private and public organisations. This competition has created a number of opportuni-ties for entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas and are ready to establish new and potentially lucrative businesses”, said Derrick Kotze, the CEO of mLab.

This year’s competition is more focused on spe-cific opportunities identified by municipalities and sector stakeholders in the Gauteng prov-ince. Under the mobile theme, the three main opportunity areas are community safety, citizen participation and transport management. These opportunities align with major projects that are being pursued by local governments in the prov-ince, such as the launch of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in the Metros in Gauteng. Simi-larly, within the green theme, this year’s focus is on four priority areas that include solar energy, energy efficiency, waste to energy and water management. These areas form the basis of investments being pursued by a number of municipalities in Gauteng, in light of significant growth in energy demand as well as the immi-nent outlawing of landfills by 2020.

In the inaugural competition, more than one hun-dred entries were received spanning a wide spectrum of innovations from early stage con-cepts to more mature prototypes. The top three finalists in each of the two themes received a total of R500, 000 in cash prize and seed fund-ing to commercialise their innovations and build their businesses. A number of these finalists now being incubated at mLab and Maxum business incubator at The Innovation Hub, have made significant progress with the development of their ideas, with stronger links with potential cus-tomers at state-owned enterprises and munici-palities for commercialisation of their innova-tions, having been established.

In this year’s competition, the prizes in each of the two themes will be as follows: First place – R250, 000, second place – R150, 000 and third place – R100, 000, comprising both a cash prize and seed funding.

Seed funding will be given in tranches tied to agreed development milestones. In addition to the cash prize and seed funding, the three win-ners in each category will receive free support with mentorship and commercialisation through Maxum business incubator, mLab and CIC. John Buchan once said “The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already.” These are words to which Ogilvy South Africa CEO, Abey Mokgwatsane subscribes to.A graduate from the AAA School of Advertising, Mokgwatsane was set to change and influence the marketing world. His journey began at VWV as a marketing trainee, he then went on to join the South African Breweries (SAB) as brand manager for the epic Castle Loud Programme which was a young adult media property for Castle Lager. It wasn’t long until he was appointed Brand Group Manager for Miller Genuine Draft and tasked with launching the brand into the South African market.

Fast forward six years later Mokgwatsane found himself back where he started, but this time as a shareholder in the VWV Group business. He partnered with Wanda Shuenyane and Jameson Hlongwane to buy a majority stake in the business. VWV’s bottom line performance increased 8 fold in 5 years with Mokgwatsane at the helm as CEO. The company also successfully executed the opening and closing ceremonies of the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

It comes as no surprise that the 33 year old business leader was nominated as one of South Africa’s Mail & Guardian 2011 top 200 young leaders in the business category. Mokgwatsane is also a founder member of the Young Business for South Africa, the Think Tank Initiative and the Experiential Industry Association of South Africa.

Robert is at present the CEO of the James 1:27 Trust, a social enterprise, located at the Innova-tion Hub in Pretoria. Robert has been a career diplomat with 18 years experience in interna-tional relations. Robert has served as a South African diplomat to Mauritius and France. Robert has worked in both bilateral and multi-lateral relations and has for several years served as a diplomatic trainer at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s Diplomatic Academy. Robert and his wife Gail have also served as associate pastors at Hatfield Christian Church.

Robert completed undergraduate studies at Rhodes University and has completed a Master of Arts in the subject Social Behaviour Studies in HIV and AIDS at the University of South Africa (UNISA). In addition he has completed courses in Conflict Resolution with the Centre for Conflict Resolution and has done a Training Programme at the United Nations Leadership Academy in Jordan. He has also completed an Advanced Training Programme in Multilateral Negotiations and Conference Diplomacy with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and has participated as a trainer with UNITAR in training programmes for Southern African diplomats and Ambassadors. Robert is at present through the James 1:27 Trust busy building at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria, a Management System for Orphans and Vulnerable Children. Robert has also just recently completed a certificate programme in social entrepreneurship at the Gordon Institute for Business Studies (GIBS).

In terms of life purpose, Robert is committed to social justice through the development of an integrated approach to promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and enterprise development.

DR PETER WATT

Dr Watt has been in pastoral ministry in South Africa since 1968. He has earned his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Missiology from the Univer-sity of South Africa and has authored books related to his studies and ministry, namely ‘From Africa’s Soil’ and 'God in Control’.

At present he is leading Cornerstone Assembly in Pretoria, a multi-national inner-city church. He has also served as Chairman of the Gen-eral Executive of the Assemblies of God. He is married to Lesley and they have three sons, Steven, Charles and David.

Moonga stud-ied actuarial science at the University of Pretoria before leaving in his final year to pursue music.

The combination of his mathematical back-ground and passion for the arts has led him to become an innovator who is able to bring

Jeff Borns has been the Mission Director for USAID/Southern Africa since January 2010. A member of the Senior Foreign Service with more than 22 years of USAID service, he began his career with USAID working in the Office of General Counsel. Before arriving in South Africa, he served in Kenya, Ecuador, Peru and Guatemala. His postings have included the Regional Legal Advisor in Kenya and Ecuador. He then served as the Director of USAID’s Office of Democratic Initiatives and Training in Peru, followed by responsibili-ties as the Director of the USAID Office of Democratic Initiatives in Guatemala.

In Washington, D.C., Mr. Borns served as the Director of the Disaster Response and Mitiga-tion Division of USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance in the Bureau for Democ-racy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA). Within the Bureau for Africa, he served as the Director of the Office of East African Affairs, then as the Director of the Office of Sustainable Development. Most recently, Mr. Borns has been the Director of USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (FFP/DCHA).

Prior to joining USAID, he was a lawyer in private practice in Los Angeles, California. He holds a Masters’ Degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College and both a law degree and B.A. in political science from the University of Iowa. He is married and has two children.

Naledi Pandor was born in 1953 in Durban. She received most of her education in exile and matricu-lated at Gaborone Secondary School in Botswana. She obtained a BA in History and English at the University of Botswana in 1977 before leaving for overseas where she subsequently graduated with a MA at the Univer-sity of London. Back in South Africa she was awarded a MA in Linguistics at Stellenbosch University in 1997.

Before becoming the Minister of Education in 2004, Naledi Pandor was involved in educational issues in various ways. She taught English in both Botswana and London and then lectured at the University of Bot-swana before joining the University of Cape Town in 1989 as a senior lecturer.

Following South Africa's first democratic election in 1994 Pandor was elected to Parliament, and in 1995, she became a Whip and then Deputy Chief Whip of the ANC. She also convened the Sub-Committee on Higher Education in the Education Portfolio Commit-tee. In 1996, Pandor was appointed as member of the Cape Technikon Council. In August 1998

McLean Sibanda holds a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and Masters of Laws (LLM) (Commercial Law) degree from UNISA. He is an admitted attorney of the High Court of SA, and is also a registered SA patent attorney and innovation matters, including World Intellectual Property Organisation forums. He tutors WIPO courses on Patent Searching and Biotechnology Law.

He has wide experience in innovation, intellec-tual property policy and management, tech-nology transfer and commercialization of intel-lectual property.

In February 2011, he assumed the role of CEO of The Innovation Hub (Africa’s first accredited science park), a Blue IQ and Gauteng Prov. Govt. Initiative.

Prior to this he was GE for Commercialisation with the Technology Innovation Agency, a national government innovation agency, after having spent 7 years with the Innovation Fund, a business unit of the DST. In the Innovation Fund, he held the roles of Senior Patent Attor-ney and Acting Executive Director, and was involved with the establishment of technology transfer offices and intellectual property capacity in South African public sector, includ-ing the development of patent attorneys for the public sector. He led the public consultation process on the Policy Framework for IP from Publicly Financed Research & Development and was seconded to the DST to drive the process of re-drafting and finalising the legislation and associated regulations on Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Financed Research & Development.

Prior to joining the Innovation Fund, he was with Adams & Adams Intellectual Property Attorneys where he trained, qualified and practiced as a patent attorney, after having spent seven years with De Beers Industrial Diamonds Division as a Senior Research Scien-tist working on various diamond synthesis processes and projects and also in the role of Intellectual Property Team Leader. He has served as a consultant to the African Union on the establishment of the Pan-African Intellec-tual Property Organization.

McLean has authored and co-authored a number of scientific and intellectual property articles and has been an invited speaker at both local and international conferences on scientific, intellec-tual property and innovation matters, including World Intellectual Property Organisation forums.He tutors WIPO courses on Patent Searching and Biotechnology Law. He has served on a number of boards of start-up companies and currently serves on the boards of the CSIR, Intangi-ble Consulting, JM Busha Group Investment Company and The Innovation Hub.

Olga Meshoe describes herself as adventurous, energetic and possibly a little bit of a worka-holic. Before leaving 7 years of full-time legal practice to pursue her passion, Olga was a partner in the banking and finance practice group of Webber Wentzel Attorneys. Olga's practice at Webber Wentzel saw her act on behalf of blue chip clients such The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited and Anglo American Finance Proprietary Limited as well as state-owned entities such as Transnet SOC Limited in relation to general commer-cial, banking and finance law as well as domestic and cross-border debt capital mar-kets transactions.

During her time at Webber Wentzel, Olga served on vari-ous firm and industry-wide committees, including being the youngest and only black chairperson of a subcommit-tee of the South African Secu-ritisation Forum. Olga is now a Senior Consult-ant at Transcend Corporate Advisors advising on Broad Based Black Economic Em-powerment generally and the Socio-Economic Development spend of corporate entities specifically. She is also involved in legal training and consulting for various law firms.
