    Dear Readers...

Welcome to our fabulous, 2nd Anniversary Celebration issue...

What a year it has been.

Idon't think anyone could say that it has been an easy one... but we're all still here, and 2012 will hopefully be a whole dif-ferent story.

Here's hoping that this New Year will bring with it all the hope, goodwill and prosperity that a New Year promises.

We wish all our loyal readers, valued advertisers, staff, contrib-utors, distributors and our printers a wonderful festive season and New Year, and hope that all your wildest dreams come true.

When we launched CityPages two years ago, we hoped with all our hearts that it would be a success. The response has been overwhelming and has motivated us throughout the prepara-tions for this, our second anniversary issue. We hope you like it.

A very special thanks to you, our dear readers, for supporting us and for giving us so much positive feedback. You make all the hard work and late nights worthwhile. I dedicate the special section on our 2nd Anniversary celebration (CityPages Pream-ble on pages 28 to 59) to all of you.

We have tried in all the possible ways to make this issue a spe-cial one, one that you will keep forever and read often.

We have some special interviews lined up in this issue which are very interesting. We also have some special recipes this month from an international celebrity chef and I hope you will like them as much as I do.

We are now extremely excited and working on our next special issue which will be Kuwait National and Liberation Day Special.

Once again we wish you a bright and prosperous New Year.

    please read and enjoy!

Our Cover Story......Our 2nd Anniversary issue features a compilation of noteworthy personalities Citipages was honored to have interviewed in the last two year. It was befitting our image as a trendy and intelligent magazine of Kuwait.

Originally, we invited all the cover personalities, but many had prior engagements so they were unable to attend the day of the photo shoot. We were very glad for the six that were present as they symbolized the best qualities of Citypages. Accompanying their description are quotes that best define them and their endeavors.

Manayer SalmeenAdversity causes some men to break; others to break records. We began our journey with Manayer, and it was imperative that she make an ap-pearance. It was Manayers face who reflected the confidence and optimistic spirit of Citypages.

Lana Al-Resheed"The public is the only critic whose opinion is worth anything at all." We chose to invite one of the prominent PR persons of Kuwait for our cover shoot. Her pres-

    ence emphasized that Citypages

always consid-ers the exemplary in the field.

Dalal Al-JanaieOur attitude toward life deter-mines life's attitude towards us. A life coach that many satis-fied and successful clients will recognize, we were positive she would induce

some of her inspiration and passion into the

    October cover..

Rana AlamuddinActing is not about being famous, it's about ex-ploring the human soul. Citypages was pleased to have her for the exclusive photo shoot for her star credit in the International entertainment industry. Her presence establishes Citypages interest in international entertainment.

    Abla Al-EissaEducation is not

preparation for life; education is life itself.

The educator flashed her million-watt smile for the cover for the second time. A positive

influence on the education system, she deserves to be

recognized as the instrument of change. She represented the value-oriented ideals of

    Citypages.

Maja Sabanovic Corridon Blessed is he who has found his work; let him ask no other blessed-ness. A self-starter of a fabulous saloon in Kuwait that offers

the best teeth whitening and tanning products from the US. Understanding the need of the market, delivering quality and building a network

ReviewsI have found the following reviews very narrative:Al-Corniche ClubThe Day Spa for MenLet's BurgerTutti FruttiDragon Roars in TriumphAmong these my favourite is the Review of Al-Corniche Club. The pictorial qual-ity and style of narration is absolutely startling.

InsightsThe following insights were found out-standing and it is hard to mention some of them but the following articles of are of their own class and are unrivalled. To name a few:

Dress to ImpressI Wasn't Born a Father, I Wasn't Born a HusbandEngland's Rose RememberedGunpowder, Treason and PlotThe Article Englands Rose Remem-bered is the article that has a quality that whenever you will read it you will find wetness in the corners of your eyes.

HealthCityPages Health section is very ben-eficial for the readers of this magazine. During the period of two years plenty of useful articles were written for the care of readers health like:All About HeadachesGrooming Tips for MenSun StrokeBack-to-School Essential Medical

CheckupsBack-to-School Essential Medical Checkups is my favourite because it was timely and it was showing the con-cern from CityPages about its readers who were just getting ready to enter into the education ground after a break. The tips given in the article were perfect and very useful.

InterviewsOne of the discriminating qualities of CityPages is its exclusive interviews with no repeated questions. Creative interviews with complete research work about the particular personality. To name some of them: Manayer Yousef SalmeenAhmed AhmedKen Lodi's Bamboo Principle

The clock has completed its round around its orbit and has proclaimed the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012. While starting the third year as a proud member of CityPages Team I am feeling honoured to share with you my personal observations about some of the inimitable and far-fetched articles published in CityPages in a short span of 2 years. As a member of Sales Team I really feel proud to hear the feedback about the quality articles published in this maga-zine from our erudite and well learned personalities. Along with these people I am also one of the admirers who have been insanely addicted by the articles of this magazine. It is not because I belong to this magazine but it is because of its quality research work done by the writers who really take care of each and every word written in this publishing.I have found stacks of tranquilizers (Articles) during the 24 issues of CityPages and every piece of writing is a Koh-I-Noor in the crown of CityPages . It is almost impossible to grade them and at the same time I would say it will be rather injustice to mention some of them. But after a gaze I have selected a few to share with my insanely addictive fellows.Lets try to have a bird view on some of the pearls from this ocean of wisdom:

    Hamad Al Humaidan

This section of CityPages is the most difficult to rate but while putting a stone on my heart I rate Ken Lodi's Bamboo Principle interview. The phi-losophy shared in this interview is a sure key to success.

In the end I would like to congratulate my colleagues and the entire CityPages Team for the successful completion of two years. John Keats once said A THING OF BEAUTY IS A JOY FOREVER, and we, the readers (me included) hope to get the beauty pieces from you in the coming days.

New Year Resolutions...and how to make them workIt is that time again when we all make our New Year resolutions, but does it really work. Life coach and motivational speaker Merlin Wilde suggests that a different approach should be taken to the changes we want to make for the year ahead.

Mark Twain wrote of New Years Resolutions, Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcom-ings considerably shorter than ever.

Slightly pessimistic I agree, but sadly oh so true. The biggest majority of New Years Resolutions have gone by the wayside before January is over and most wont even be remembered six months later. And the reason is simple: Most are made in response to something negative, a habit or situation that the person wants to change or end. And therein lies the problem, its hard to develop momentum from a negative response. It is always easier to move toward something rather than away from something.

Consider one of the most adopted resolutions --- weight loss. No one can get excited about losing weight because it requires deprivation. Its a negative response to concerns about appearance, health, etc. The results of weight loss resolutions demonstrate their weakness. The people who succeed at losing weight and maintaining the loss have usually been motivated by a dream much bigger and more positive than just losing weight. They see themselves living a healthy lifestyle. They begin to act and think like people who are in good physical shape. Theres more of a radical change in a persons thinking and actions than you see with most resolutions. It wouldnt be possible to effect and sustain such a radical change unless the person is motivated by a big dream that is positive in nature.

If youre going to make a New Years Resolution this year, make one with a high probability for success. Make a Resolution to develop a life plan. Working with a life plan youre much more apt to be excited by what the future brings even if you succeed at attaining only a small part of your plan. A life plan should address all

areas of your life including finances, health, relation-ships, career, spiritual and recreational. While a lot of our focus tends to be on financial issues like increasing income or decreasing debt, or health issues like losing weight or quitting smoking, the undeniable truth is that a life lived out of balance isnt a life of quality at all.

If you were going to build a new house and you had this idea for a fabulous master bedroom suite, you wouldnt rush out and start building the master bed-room. Youd have a complete plan for the whole house which included the Master bedroom suite before you started. When you approach resolutions and goals in the same manner, you end up with a much better chance of achieving success.

So whatever your plans and aspirations are for the coming year be positive. Fix that medical problem that has been niggling away at you, put your finances in place and gain control of your life. If it is a new sport or hobby you want to start then do it, do not delay any further. Get out and play some golf, if you ride then visit the stables and plan in some time to ride out in the beautiful Spanish country side and enjoy the scenery that mother nature has provided for us all to enjoy.

And finally, in amongst all of the dreams and ideas for the year ahead do make sure you find some time for you! Get the new hairstyle, treat yourself to a manicure or massage or simply just promise yourself a long lie in bed on Sunday mornings.

Remember, life is not a rehersal, this is it and you owe it to yourself to live it to the max... so go and enjoy all it has to offer.

One of the best things about being a Twenty Something is you are probably setting up your own home for the first time. This is at once and super exciting and super overwhelming prospect. Thanks to my husbands career moves, I set up my first home in London; my second home in Houston and am currently in the process of setting up my third in Kuwait. Because of this, interiors have become a real passion of mine. I am passionate about living well and having my home be a reflection of who I am and what I love. Through my interior adventures, I have found that you really dont have to spend a ton of money to make a house your own, which is great because most Twenty Somethings probably dont have an unlimited budget. Here are five tips that will help anyone make their space feel like their home.

Five Ways to Make a House Your Home

PhotosIn the age of digital everything, a lot of people no longer take the time to print out their photos. This is SO sad. Pictures are my favorite link to the people and memories that I love. There are countless ways to display pictures in your home. Create a gallery wall with various shots of your favorite people and places. Not only are my family and friends on my gallery wall, but I also have pictures of our previ-ous homes, college campus, venue where we got married and any other place that has special sig-

nificance to us. Another way I have pictures dis-played in our home is in big decorative bowls. I keep them out so they are easy for our guests,

and us, to flip through whenever we want!

FragranceHouse smells are one of my favorite things. Just thinking about the way my Moms house smells gives me such a feeling of comfort. This is something that I definitely want to recreate in my own home. Scent is the sense that is most closely tied with memory, so I definitely want

my house to smell great! Candles are the obvious answer to this; I love

the Voluspa scents. But there are other options besides candles. When cold weather comes, boil cinnamon sticks in water. It will make your home feel so cozy! You can also create your own sig-nature linen spray and mist it all over your house.

Display the things you love.So many times, people have items

that they absolutely love that get relegated to a closet or simply stored away. I think if you love an item - keep it out! Why not hang that dress you cant wait to wear on the outside of your closet door? Drape the necklace your grandmother gave you over your lampshade. Put fruit in your favorite mix-ing bowl and set it out on your counter. Looking around your house and seeing things you absolutely love will make you feel at home instantly.

Tell your story, not a stores.Retailers have found a way to con people into buying entire rooms at once. To me, this is a travesty. I be-lieve that all items in your home should be acquired over time.

Yes, it might be easier to go to a store and buy your couch, chairs, coffee table, lamps, etc. All at once - but whats the fun in that? I love looking around my home and remembering how I got each piece and the memory that accompanies it. I will never forget when I was with my mom and best friend in Houston and we went to look at a house that was for sale. In the garage, there was a great antique chest. I took one look at it and knew I had to have it in my house - its now my kitchen island. Not only was it inexpensive and so unique, it will forever remind me of that day.

Bring the outside in.Display fresh flowers in your home. Period, end of story. And it doesnt have to be expensive - get the KD5 bunch from the nearest florist and arrange it yourself (its not hard, I swear!). If flowers arent your thing, then put some pinecones in a glass hur-ricane.

Gather sticks and arrange them in a vase. You can also collect cool rocks and stones. Get an orchid. Or paper whites. Just do something to bring nature into your home - you wont regret it!

Brands should Consider Integrating PR in addition to Social Media for 2012

    18www.citypageskuwait.com

Happy new year everyone :) hope you all enjoyed your little break. This month I will talk about the importance of integrating PR with social media in their 2012 Me-dia planning and content generating, I have always believed that if you are a good PR, you will diffidently make a great social media example in the new media department for a brand, a company or an agency, so this is dedicated to all of you PR people :) including me.

Brands and their agencies need to look beyond pure social media metrics, such as engagement and com-munity growth, and integrate activities with other disciplines, particularly PR and search (SEO), for the greatest return on investment.

Although the PR industry is in a state of heightened change, with bloggers proliferating and print media continually on the decline, actually the PR industry has a great deal to offer for the fledgling social media sector, on the basis of knowledge that has been hard fought and learned in the industrys history.

Specifically, PRs treat content in a very specific way. PR-generated content tends to conform closely to brand guidelines, will be pre-approved by appropriate stake-holders and will, typically, align with an overall narra-tive about the brand or business behind the story.

Whilst this may seem impractical at first, treating tweets, posts and updates like pre-approved, micro-press announcements, to be appended, revised or replaced at the last minute if and as required with content that is reactive to whatever is happening at the time, ensures that the spine of any social media program is closely tied to a brands other marketing activities. Moreover, this process allows for terrific vis-ibility over the narrative which is being told across the social profiles over weeks and months, rather than on a post-by-post basis.

As well as planning, governance is another area where

PRs have learned the hard way. Ironically, measuring PR remains a contentious issue within the sector but rather than the specific measures that are used (i.e. share of voice, volume of coverage, the now out-of-favour Ad-vertising Equivalent Value, or AEV), the process that PRs use to methodically track, measure and report on activity is extremely beneficial in social media. The key is that when it is used appropriately, the information is actionable and in the context of social media, rapid measurement such as that delivered in a weekly activ-ity report can inform on-the-fly changes to a strategy, meaning that the campaign evolves and improves on a week by week basis.

So, its no coincidence that more PR agencies are man-aging social media for their clients. However, one disci-pline which remains overlooked by many in the social media space is organic search (SEO) and the ever-growing value of social media content as a signal for search engines.

Whilst its certainly no secret that both Google and Bing have this year announced that they are treating social media far more prominently in their respective algo-rithms, the fact remains that unless social media activity aligns with Search, in terms of keywords to be used and landing pages to be embedded, the two remain separate. Again, planning is key as is an understanding of the terminology and intricacies of search, another discipline which feels like it changes on a day by day basis some weeks.

Overall, the fact is simply that social media is growing up as a discipline in its own right. With brands continu-ing to invest heavily, including the mainstream, as well as early adopters, it seems highly likely that next year brands and their agencies will need to ensure that their activities across the areas of print and Online PR, search and social media are working together, not the stand alone approach adopted by many at present!

Hope that was a light advice to keep in mind, one last tip ...try to be a person ...online :)

Place refers to the distribution channels used to get your product to your customers. What your product is will greatly influence how you distribute it. If, for exam-ple, you own a small retail store or offer a service to your local community, then you are at the end of the distribution chain, and so you will be supplying directly to the customer. Businesses that create or assemble a product will have two options: selling directly to con-sumers or selling to a vendor.

    Direct Sales

As a producer, you must decide if supplying direct is appropriate for your product, whether it be sales through retail, door-to-door, home delivery, e-com-merce, on-site, or some other method. An advantage of direct sales would be the contact you gain by meet-ing customers face to face. With this contact you can easily detect market changes that occur and adapt to them. You also have complete control over your prod-uct range, how it is sold, and at what price.

Direct sales may be a good place to start when the supply of your product is limited or seasonal. For ex-ample, direct sales for many home-produced products can occur through home-based sales, markets, and stands.

However, direct sales require that you have an effec-tive retail interface with your customers, which may be in person or electronic. If developing and maintaining this retail interface is not of interest to you or you are not good at it, you should consider selling through an intermediary.

Reseller Sales (Sales Through an Intermediary)

Instead of selling directly to the consumer, you may de-cide to sell through an intermediary such as a whole-saler or retailer who will resell your product. Doing this may provide you with a wider distribution than selling

direct while decreasing the pressure of managing your own distribution system. Additionally, you may also re-duce the storage space necessary for inventory. One of the most important reasons for selling through an in-termediary is access to customers. In many situations, wholesalers and retailers have customer connections that would not be possible to obtain on your own.

However, in selling to a reseller you may lose contact with your end consumer. In some cases, you may also lose some of your company identity. For example, your distributor may request that your product be sold un-der the resellers brand name.

One factor that may influence whether you can find an intermediary to handle your product is production flow.

Wholesalers want a steady year-round supply of prod-uct to distribute. If you can deliver a steady year-round supply that is of consistent quality, then selling through an intermediary may be a good strategy for you.

    Market Coverage

No matter whether you sell your product direct or through a reseller, you must decide what your cover-

age will be in distributing your product. Will you pursue intensive, selective, or exclusive coverage?

Intensive distribution is widespread placement in as many places as possible, often at low prices. Large businesses often market on a nationwide level with this method.

Convenience productsones that consumers buy regularly and spend little time shopping for, like chew-ing gumdo better with intensive (widespread) dis-tribution.

Selective distribution narrows distribution to a few businesses. Often, upscale products are sold through retailers that only sell high-quality products. With this option, it may be easier to establish relationships with customers. Products that people shop around for sell better with selective distribution.

Exclusive distribution restricts distribution to a single reseller. You may become the sole supplier to a re-seller who, in turn, might sell only your product. You may be able to promote your product as prestigious with this method, though you might sacrifice sales vol-ume. Specialty products tend to perform better with exclusive distribution.

    Other Place Decisions

Product characteristics and your sales volumes will dictate what inventories to maintain and how best to transport your products. Additionally, the logistics associated with acquiring raw materials and ensuring that your final product is in the right place at the right time for the right customers can comprise a large per-centage of your total costs and needs careful moni-toring.

You may decide to have a combination of all the dis-tribution methods. Whatever you decide, choose the method which you believe will work best for you.

Do Women Suffer as aResult of their Employment?

During my stress management seminars, the topic of stress and the workplace often comes up as female participants strive to understand how their daily routine affects their current situation in life. The first step to solving any problem is awareness. Women, did you know that the current work culture was first cre-ated by and for men, and compliments their physiology?

The current work culture is one of competition; those who have the competitive edge over others become successful in the fast paced work world of today. Did you know that men thrive on competition? Its true. Martians are happiest when they are competing be-cause competition creates testosterone. Just look at the males love for sports and the importance of sports in the males lives. When the Martian tanks are filled with testosterone, they are happy and ful-filled. Contrastingly, when Martians are not doing well at work, they feel unhappy and their testosterone lev-els drop. So, for the Martian, the workplace fulfills a vital need for them aside from economics.

When women are within this work culture, they, un-like the Martians, are up against the very nature of how their bodies work. Research now shows that women feel fulfilled when they are connecting and nurturing others. When women are giving freely and helping other people with random acts of kindness, a stress-reducing hormone, Oxytocin, is produced. Unfortunately, at work, womens Oxytocin production is inhibited, because the competitive nature produces testosterone. Unlike men, Testosterone does not make women happy but actually is a blocker to Oxy-tocin. When women do not have enough Oxytocin be-ing produced, on top of constant low grade stress it can seem like a crisis and causes the body to produce the hormone Cortisol.

Cortisol is the fight or flight hormone. Similar to adrenaline, it kicks in once the adrenaline reserves have dried up and the individual is still stressed. Cor-tisol is excreted on a long term basis and remains in the body causing many negative effects. With the con-tinuous high levels of stress in our daily lives, today, most people have chronic low-grade stress causing them to have excess Cortisol in the body. This wears

the body out and compromises the immune system.

If youre a woman and have any of the following physi-cal symptoms, then you may be deficient in Oxytocin:

    l weight gain

    l sleeplessness

    l fatigue

    l headaches

    l migraines

    l infertility

    l Cardiovascular disease

With the above symptoms, typical questions which arise in the mind of a woman include:

l Do I pursue my career and somehow find connection within my careerwill this make me happy?

l How do I balance raising kids as a single parent and work?

l How do I nurture myself, while also caring for eve-ryone else?

How Can We Achieve Balance & Our Abso-lute Potential?Educating ourselves about our physiology and what we need to do to increase our oxytocin is the first step towards fighting this battle. The next step is follow-through on doing the daily, weekly, monthly activities that fulfill and balance us. If you feel like youre in crisis. It doesnt necessarily have to be a life-changing career shift.

    Education.

Education is key, knowledge is power. John Gray, Ph.D., talks about how women can produce more Oxytocin in his books, Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice, Why Mars and Venus Collide, and The Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise Solution. These books will assist you in raising your awareness on the causes and effects of stress on your body and your life. With awareness, you will be better able to deal with the issues of stress and how to bal-ance your life.

If you dont have time to read books, and want to prac-tice your skills the same time youre learning them, Mars Venus Coaching Kuwait facilitates workshops covering John Grays, Ph.D., latest gender intelligence material. Sign up for a seminar and let the de-stress-ing begin.

Accountability Partner. Once you have become aware and knowledgeable, find a coach to help guide and keep you on track of your progress. You get faster results than following the same pattern of empty promises with yourself.

So, in conclusion, stress is a serious issue for women all around the world. Many try to face this struggle alone and end up feeling frustrated and powerless. For those who feel they have reached a stage in their life where their work-life balance may be in need of some tweaking, please feel free to drop me a line and it would be my pleasure to guide you to the best next step in the direction of a happier more fulfilled life.

Chinese New YearChinese New Year (also called the Lunar New Year) occurs in the early months of our calendar year, typically January or February and this year falls on January 23rd. This is the first of 15 days of celebration and the start of the Year of the Dragon.

In Chinese tradition, each year is dedicated to a specific animal. The Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Rat, Boar, Rabbit, Dog, Rooster, Ox, Tiger, Snake, and Ram are the twelve animals that are part of this tradition. In 2012, the Dragon is welcomed back after the 2011 year of the Rabbit. Each of these animals are thought to bestow their characteristics to the people born in their year.

While the Year of the Rabbit was characterized by calm and tranquility, the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilara-tion and intensity. The Rabbit imbues people with a sense of cautious optimism, but people respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind which can be an unwise move: The Dragon is all about drama but if you take unneces-sary risks, you may find yourself starring in your own personal tragedy.

The Dragons PersonalityPeople born under the Dragon are passionate, brave and self-assured. At their best they are pioneering spirits; at their worst, they epitomize the old adage: Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Dragons are generous with their resources, a tendency that at its most negative can reflect a foolhardy attitude towards money. But Dragons in general are blessed with good fortune. They are smart, enterprising and have a wicked sense of humor. They have a natural flair for fashion and are the people to consult if you want to catch up on the latest trends.

This Chinese New Year 2012 ushers in the Water Dragon. Water exerts a calming influence on the

Dragons innate fire. Water Dragons are more open to other peoples opinions than other Drag-ons which gives them the ability to channel their personal charisma into real leadership qualities.

Famous celebrities born in under the Dragon in-clude John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Al Pacino, Marlene Dietrich and Matt Dillon. The Dragons lucky color is yellow.

The Dragon and LoveDragons are passionate. They fall in love quickly and out of love just as quickly. Their charisma and charm is an immense draw to people of the opposite sex whose attention and admiration they crave. Though they have a tendency to treat love like a game, they can settle down when they meet the right partner, someone whos strong enough not to be bowled over by the Dragons flamboyant, independent and stubborn personality.

The Dragons ideal partners are the Rat, the Monkey, and the Rooster: The Rat is practi-cal, observant and resourceful, able to help the

Dragon when extravagant promises have backed the Dragon into a corner. The Monkey is just as popular as the Dragon, curious, intellectual and fun-loving, one of the few personalities the Drag-on doesnt mind sharing the spotlight with. The Rooster can give the Dragon a run for the money on the fashion-forward front; attractive, well-groomed, fiercely loyal and committed to honesty, the Rooster serves as the Dragons reality check, keeping the Dragon from making promises that he or she cant keep.

The Dragon and WealthDragon years are lucky for anyone thinking of starting a business or initiating a new project of any sort because money is easier to come by for everyone, whether its earned, borrowed or re-ceived as a gift. Consequently we can expect the economic downturn to ease up a bit in the coming year. Fortunes can be made but they can also be lost: Keep in mind like all good things, the Year of the Dragon will come to an end and you will be held accountable for unreasonable extrava-gances.

Dragons do well in professions that give them the ability to function somewhat autonomously. They make excellent sales people, publicists, political campaigners, lawyers, real estate brokers, actors and politicians.

  • I happen to know three young men theyll like that who told me a few

weeks ago that they were going to Disneyland, Paris for a few days. Boyish

grins and eyes sparkling with anticipation. They were going to a place where

belief is suspended and dreams briefly become reality. The entire Disneyland

concept was birthed in the mind of one man who saw it in his mind and en-

visioned it in his heart, but it was left to those who followed him to bring it to

life. To see this dream become a reality, he put together a team of visionaries

whom he called 'imagineers'. The man coined the term to describe his 'dream

team' of visionaries. Its an exciting idea. All visions are born this way. Wait

though. Heres a thought. if a dream does not go through a process of evolution

it'll never taste any sort of reality. But, Im getting ahead of myself.

A wise man once wrote we read to know we are not alone. What a deep and

powerful truth that is.We read to connect ourselves with the vision, the im-

agination of others, to share in their passions, revel in the symphonic flow of

their words, sing to the music of their imaginations. I sometimes think that

the Facebook generation is so information-rich it has become imaginatively

poverty-stricken. Over the howls of protest, let me explain. Twitter-type tech-

nology can only catch fleeting, ephemeral glimpses, two dimensional mental

sound bites instead of the rich, three-dimensional walkabout inside the mind

of one talented enough to describe it for us and place it in black and white on

a page. Theres therapy in pages my reading device isnt just dumb tech-

nology, it behaves like areal book and I can turn its electronic pages with my

    Preamble

  • finger just as if I have hard copy in front of me.

Which brings me rather nicely to the pages youre now holding.City Pages. There

are coffee-table magazines, big, glossy, picture-rich magazines that sell envy. I

dont think so.And then there are the magazines that people like you and I actu-

allyread, that become part of our lives; magazines that influence the way that

we think, feel and interact with the world around us. Ironically, the Occupy

Wall Street protest first began with a magazine article in an obscure little place

which then went viral on the Internet. Such publications are usually excep-

tional in a particular way. They might have an exceptional format, a look and

feel which sets them apart, or in CPs case, our use of the celebrity interview to

drive the copybase forward and provide real-life scenarios which people could

emotionally buy into and share with their friends.

Bill Gates thought it might be a good idea if software could be used by eve-

rybody, not just a few highly skilled professionals, but Windows didnt just

fall out of the box, like Athena from the head of Zeus, fully formed and armed.

It took time, diligence, patience and effort. CP began small, from an original

idea from one of its founders who simply liked magazines and collected them,

learning by observing what seemed to work and what didnt. The original vi-

sion was simple it went something like this I like reading stuff that keeps

me informed, educates me, tells me whats hot and whats not and makes me

laugh. I think other people might like it as well. At the time, there seemed to

be a black media hole. Nothing really existed which provided family reading

material something for everyone a familiar voice which spoke the peoples

language. Its founders werent interested in just filling up space, they set a high

standard for good quality copy, journalism was responsible, fresh and original

it made a point of not buying in externally generated material to fill its pages

and, importantly, the original team learned as they went along. From day

one the hard copy was available everywhere, wherever people gathered to eat,

drink and talk. It also went online so those without access to the print copy

who might live elsewhere, get a breath of Kuwaiti air with their morning coffee.

The first issue was good, very good, but there was still so much to learn. Visions

never expand and develop if the visionaries stop dreaming, stop imagining.

Everybody knew that CP was a winner and as time went on and issue followed

issue, the original ideas still flowed, good people shared their ideas and the lit-

tle chrysalis of a project began to grow up. This resulted in a sharper, hipper

layout, better colour matching, almost a less-is-more approach.Very trendy.

One idea caught the imagination. Every month, a celebrity, home-grown, not

millions of miles away in Hollywood was a front page feature. Lets look at a

  • Homemade facial mask for skincare

Facial masks have been used for beauty treatment of face since time immemorial. They are applied on face for about 20 minutes and then washed off. They provide a nourishing, healing, cleansing and an astringent effect. These masks whip up the blood circulation and temporarily irons out wrinkles. They freshen the skin leaving it glowing. A few formulations of simple homemade facial masks are given below.

Milk Home Face MaskThis is one of the cheapest and simplest masks. Soak a cotton wool in milk and rubbed it on the face and leave it to dry for 10- 15 minutes and then the face is washed.

Butter Milk Face Mask RecipeA cup of butter milk is heated and three tsp of flower blossoms are put into it. The mixture is simmered on a very low heat for about 30 minutes. Then the heat is removed and it is allowed to cool. It is then used as a face mask. It helps in cleansing the pores. This has the good bleaching and cleansing properties.

Meal Home Face MaskA paste of barley meal, pea flower and rose water is applied and left on the skin for several hours to make the skin soft and supple. Another mask formulation incorporates mixing of one tsp each of finely ground oatmeal, milk along with a few drop of almonds oil. The paste is applied on the skin and left for 15 minutes and then rinsed off.

Carrot and Turnip Homemade Face MasksCarrot and turnip are boiled and made to paste. The paste is applied on the face and left for 10-15 minutes and then rinsed off with milk. This mask leaves the skin feeling fresh and clean. Carrots are rich in vitamin A and turnips are marvelous cleaners.

Oatmeal Face Masks RecipesTwo tsp each of dried orange peel, oatmeal and cold cream are mixed into a paste and applied generously all over the face and neck. After 10-15 minutes it dries off the same is rubbed off using an upward circular motion. This leaves the skin smooth and shining.

Potato Natural Face Mask RecipesOne tsp each of potato juice and fullers earth are mixed to form a paste and it is applied on the face. Potatoes contain vitamin c that clears skin blemishes. Fullers earth absorbs all the dirt and grease from the skin.

Cleansing Facial MaskOne tsp each of olive oil, carrot juice, orange juice, lemon juice, powdered brewers yeast is mixed with 1/2 tsp of yogurt to form a paste. It is applied on the face and left for 15 minutes. Brewers yeast stimulates the flow of blood to the skin gives good complexion. Yogurt cleanses the skin and the fruit juice provides vitamins and minerals. If the skin is very dry more olive oil can be added.

Papaya Homemade MasksTwo tsp of ripe papaya flesh is smashed and applied over the face and left for 10-15 minutes. It is then rinsed with warm water. After a few days, there will be a remarkable improvement and the skin will glow.

  • Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Maja Sabanovic Corridon. I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina, studied Architecture in University of Sarajevo, but life had other plans for me. I came to Kuwait in 2004 to work as a US Army contractor.

When and how did you decide to start your own saloon in Kuwait? As my work contract for the military was coming to an end, I decided to venture out and start my own busi-ness. I was not ready to leave Kuwait. My real estate agent found me this salon that was for sale and I saw it as a great opportunity for me to open my tanning salon.

Why did you choose to specialize in Tanning? There are many ladies saloons in Kuwait, and as a fre-quent saloon visitor myself, I saw the need for a good tanning salon. Most women here do not feel comfort-able or have time to go to the beach, so I decided to give them that opportunity to have a gorgeous tan all year around. Some of my clients are using solarium for medical reasons as well, such as vitamin D deficiency.

Is your material purchased locally or from outside? Some of the material is purchased locally but other material is brought from the US. We have a Keratin brought specially from US and now we have some new material from Brazil and it is very special and cannot be found locally.

Like the latest addition to our services is the Teeth Whitening America, which is a new and unique concept in Kuwait and everything has come from America. The material and the equipment all has come from America.

How does Teeth Whitening America works? We have a special gel that comes in a mouth guard and it is applied on the teeth. Then we have a special LED

light that is applied to the teeth which helps in opening the pores of the teeth and together with the gel helps in whitening the teeth. It is a strictly cosmetic proce-dure and has not side effects.

How long does the procedure take?It takes just 45 minutes and the results show the teeth are whiter from 2 to 7 shades.

Once the procedure is done, how long does it last for?It lasts up to 2 years.

But can someone come again and do the procedure before the two years to get even brighter and whiter teeth?Yes you may come. However, once the procedure is completed you will receive a pan which you could carry with you and whenever you would like to brighter your teeth from stains from coffee or cigarettes, you can apply it yourself. But the clients can also bring their pan and come to the saloon and do a 15 minutes ses-sions to get better results.

Does it work on all kinds of teeth? Who is not a good candidate for Teeth Whiten-ing America? It works on only natural teeth and we do not recom-mend it for sensitive teeth. We have a questionnaire which our team asks the client before we can decide to use the treatment on them. It is also not recom-mended for pregnant women.

How cost effective is this compared to teeth whitening done at other places? It is very, very cost effective compared to other meth-ods currently available.

When did you launch the product in Kuwait? It was launched in November and we had some amaz-

    ing results.

    What are your future plans?

Well, we would like to focus more on this for the time

being and expand our reach. Probably we would like to

have the opportunity to serve men as well as we are

    currently catering to women only.

    Tell us about your staff?

Well we have a very highly trained staff that comes

from different countries and they all work very dedicat-

edly to ensure 100% customer satisfaction.

    What is your clientele like?

Awesome. At Tan-Fastic we have a mixture of our die

hard clients that followed us from the beginning and a

ton of wonderful new clients. Anyone who comes to our

saloon once, becomes a regular customer.

    How would you differentiate Tan-Fastic

    from other saloons?

Well its the environment and the professional attitude

of our professional staff. It is like a community. Whoever

comes in, we treat them like a neighbor or a friend

who has come in. The prices are very affordable for

    everybody.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine?

CityPages, Thank you very much for the interview and

thank you for promoting young entrepreneurs giving

us great exposure in your magazine. Best of luck in

    2012!

Citypages is very interested in self-taught entrepreneurs. They inspire others with similar strong dreams.

The state of the economy makes it difficult to find a job or you find your life has been derailed, you

should consider shaping a new path for yourself, like Maja Sabanovic Corridon. Instead of following the

safe path, she ventured into the unknown and new. She opened her own salon in Kuwait, and caters to

an exclusive cliental that love what she offers.

She understood that there was a yearning for exotic tans and sparkling white teeth in Kuwait. Fulfilling

the need became the priority and thus, she became the owner of Tan-Fantastic Salon. Customers can

flaunt perfect white teeth and a glowing tan because of the high-quality products imported from the US

and the attentive care guaranteed by professionals. Citypages sat down with the entrepreneur to learn

    about the attractive salon offers.

How long have you been in Kuwait?

Well this time we have been here for almost four

years and starting on with our fifth year. We began

about 20 years ago almost coming for short time

and then going back. We came in response to the

requests that we had from many Kuwaitis who used

to visit us in our clinic in America. We started accept-

ing their requests and started visiting Kuwait. And

now that we have retired from the United States , so

    are here full time.

    What is your primary objective?

Our primary emphasis is on preventive medicine and

teaching people to live a fit and healthy lifestyle and to

correct their lifestyle when and if they are not healthy.

    And what are your goals?

Our goal is to prevent the problems in people before

they have the problem and if they already have the

problem, we would help to reverse the problem or

eliminate those problems by lifestyle changes such

as eating better, nutrition, exercise and stress man-

    agement.

So, you do not provide or suggest any medicine?

Normally we dont. But, if it is necessary, then medi-

cine is part of it. Unfortunately some people do not

come to us until they already have high blood pres-

sure, high cholesterol and they are already on medi-

cation. But it is very normal for us to get people to a

point where they can give up their medicine. That is

if they correct their diet, take correct exercise, and

learn to manage their stress better, then often they

do not need the medicines. But it really depends on

what stage do we get them. The younger we get the

patient the better. Since we can educate them and

explain them the results they can achieve.

What according to you is the biggest problem people have in Kuwait?

The biggest problems are mainly two; overweight

and diabetes and diabetes come from overweight.

There are actually two kinds of diabetes; the first

kind is the kind that the children get and that is

not what we are really concerned with. We are con-

cerned with the kind that the adults get and this is

caused entirely by lifestyle. This is by having too

much weight and very little or no exercise and too

    much stress.

The good news is that over 90% of that can be re-

versed if people first of all learn the reason that

causes it and what to do about it.

Another thing about Kuwait is that until a few years

ago the United States had the highest portion of

Obesity. Between our children, our younger people

and adults. We were considered the heaviest peo-

ple in the cultural world. Well, Kuwait took that away

from us about three years ago and a lot of peo-

ple dont know this but Kuwait now has the largest

population for not only overweight but also obesity.

Even worse is that we have found that obesity is

getting downward and downward and we are now

have problems with children and not only teenagers.

Children in their grammar school or early grades are

overweight or obese. This is alarming for us.

So what or how do you intend to solve this problem in Kuwait?

The crux of the reason why we are here or what we

want to do here is to educate the people. We found

in the United States that the more education we

can give or when people can first understand what

the problem is, then they can start to deal with the

problem more correctly. So, we spend a lot of time

here educating people through a lot of television

work and interviews. We have worked with the Das-

man Center for Diabetes and helped them with their

program. Because, what we believe is that the more

we can get the correct information out the better it

is. We found out that the problem we have here is

the same problem we had in America. There is a lot

of bad information out. People are constantly bom-

barded with information which is either half true, or

two-thirds true, or not true at all. So many people

are so confused and they just give up. They feel that

nothing works so why bother with it.

We believe that if we can give scientific information

out that comes from the most prestigious journals

or best medical schools or the best thinking that is

currently available. Our idea is that if people learn

to understand the real problem then we can design

a plan to treat it and then help them to implement

the plan. Not just for the short-term but for the long-

    term.

How do these problems affect people?

These problems decrease the life expectancy

of people. If a child is obese in grammar school,

we know statically and the studies tell us that the

child will have 20 years of less life compared to if

he leads a healthy lifestyle. And its not only being

overweight. It is being overweight and not exercis-

ing. Children today and the adults spend too much

watching television or playing video games and not

enough time moving. So the way Dr. Jassem is teach-

ing now and is emphasizing on to get up and move

more. Doesnt have to be exercise. You do not have

to be running but just getting up and moving. Lets

say when you are talking on your phone and walking

    has beneficial effects.

What is your method of treating the pa-tients?

The first thing we do when a patient comes to us is

that we give them a complete evaluation. That in-

cludes a Physical evaluation, a laboratory examina-

tion, and we establish as to where they are in their

fitness. We look into this now differently compared

to how we used to see it in the past. In the past

we took the persons age, his weight and start pre-

paring the plan from there. But what we are doing

now is that we establish their physiological age and

we compare that to their chronological age. This is

very helpful for a person to know. For example, if a

person is 30 years old, it is helpful for him to know

that he has the physical conditioning of a person

of 25 or 40. It could be either way. We then show

them what we can do to make the changes in their

life that will take them to where they want to be. We

all want to be younger than we are. Its all matter of

    what the
