Saft announces the world’s only high power ATEX/IECEx certif iedlith ium cells at Electronica 2012
The new FRIWO C- and D-size cells provide safe and reliable high-powerperformance in potentially explosive atmospheres
Saft is also presenting advanced battery solutions based on nickel and lithium-ionchemistries for a wide range of applications including military, medical, small PV,
metering, stationary and telecom backup
Munich, November 13, 2012 – Saft, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of
advanced batteries for industry, is announcing at Electronica 2012 the two latest additions to itsFRIWO Lithium (Li-MnO2) range of cells: C- and D-size intrinsically safe cells for use in
potentially explosive atmospheres. In addition to offering a unique, world-leading performancefor intrinsically safe cells, the two new FRIWO cells are currently the world’s only high-power
lithium cells rated T4 at +70˚C.
Saft’s stand at Electronica will also feature a broad portfolio of advanced rechargeable batterysolutions that utilize state-of-the-art nickel-based and lithium-ion (Li-ion) chemistries to deliver
exceptional performance and reliability in a wide range of applications including military, medical, small scale solar photovoltaic (PV) schemes, metering, stationary and telecom
backup.
FRIWO ATEX/IECEx certi fied cellsThe new FRIWO D-size M20Ex and C-size M52Ex primary lithium cells are designed to meet
the growing demand for safe and reliable high-power performance cells for applications inpotentially explosive atmospheres. Applications include smart gas meters (including those with
built-in GPRS communications), gas or oil tank level monitoring, leak detection, portable gasdetectors, pipeline inspection and other applications in the chemical industry such as wireless
automation.
The FRIWO D-size M20Ex and C-size M52Ex primary lithium cells provide a high energydensity and are certified according to ATEX/IECEx by an independent certification body, which
guarantees their full and continued compliance with the IEC 60079-11 standard (Explosiveatmospheres – Part 11: Equipment protection by intrinsic safety “I”).
The design of the new Li-MnO2 cells makes them an ideal choice for applications with a lowaverage consumption, but with temporary demands for high current pulses even after longstand-by periods. The C- and D- cells provide capacities of 5.7 Ah and 12.4 Ah respectively, and pulse capabilities of 4 A and 8 A respectively. They also benefit from very low self-discharge rates of less than 1.5 percent in the first year and around 0.5 percent from thesecond year and can operate over a wide temperature range from - 40°C to + 72°C.

The cells feature a spiral electrode construction for high current and power capability and arehoused in stainless steel containers with glass to metal seals, laser welding, safety vent andsafety “shut-down” separators. This industrial design ensures a high level of resistance tocorrosion and safety under abusive conditions.
