Ideation, Model Fabrication, Renderings, Process Development, Motivation

In response to a real RFP by the City of Chicago, this proposal seeks to revitalize the Old Post Office which sits on the Chicago river, borders the hustle and bustle of downtown, and vaults over the extensively congested Congress Expressway. The difficulty of site and program forced us to thoroughly investigate and answer to historic preservation regulations, branding and marketing intent, as well as real estate financial planning.

The ideation process led us to a strong and simple diagram of four main blocks for our master plan proposal. Two inward facing C blocks and a raised central O block create an inner focus that defines this new district. Real estate logistics pushed us to place a tower along the river, taking advantage of perfectly aligned views up and down bends of the river.

Alongside the diligence we devoted to project investigation, we very intentionally designed our process to achieve optimum results and efficiency.

DWELL S.M.A.R.T. HOUSING CONCEPTYEAR 2 + / ONGOING RESEARCH W/ FACULTYFabrication, Design, Logistics, Grant Proposal, Funding & Support

This work seeks to develop a S.M.A.R.T. (Simple, Modular, Affordable, Ready, True) solution to the world housing crisis.

Currently undergoing field testing after its first full build, Prototype A is a low-cost housing solution constructed of exterior grade plywood. The floor, walls, and roof are composed of identical, prefabricated, interlocking studs that simplify construction and shorten on-site time. The components are compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport to most locations. Tool requirements are modest as each joint screws together with toenails. The interlocking stud components work together to form grids and eventual rigidity, attaching at corners and floors for a unified structural system. The grid can overlap itself to extend the walls, floors, and roof further in any direction for a variety of sizes.

Ideation, Dress and Model Fabrication, Renderings, Motivation

This project sought to propose a featured paper garment and a sustainable fashion pavilion for the 2015 Milan World Exposition. A more experimental project to begin with, my teammates and I took the adventurous nature of the proposal to heart and followed an exploratory design process through a vast array of ideas.

The concept of ‘the ethereal’ came from a fascination with the bareness of fabric and its ability to define space and experience with its revealment/concealment. Our dress, for example, is merely a sheet of paper but appears solid from certain angles and almost transparent from others. We attempted to explore this realm of ‘barely’ architecture by suggesting space and playing with light through the undulation of draping fabric. Interior and exterior spaces are consequently shaped by voids left in the volume of fabric sheets to create this delicate, otherworldly pavilion.

YEAR 1 + / ONGOING PASSIONS, HOBBIES, TOOLSSketching and watercoloring are indispensable to me for analyzing issues in design scenarios, interpreting the world that surrounds us, or just relaxing and creating. The stroke and style I have developed over the years is extremely graphic, quick, simple, expressive, and thoroughly fun. Much of the work shown is from a summer in Europe where I fully utilized the wondrous environment to experiment, grow, and practice, practice, practice. My skills continue to progress as sketching and watercolors become more ingrained in my design and thought process.
