how neurons carry messages & communicate with each other.
Neuron Structure:
Neurons are cells that transmit information, they are composed of different parts such as the Dendrites (they conduct the messages toward the cell body). Axon’s (they conduct the messages away from the cell body). And the cell body.
Neuron Function (Action Potential):
1. Nerve impulse sends an electrochemical signal 2. A quick electrical charge travels down the axon 3. The resting potential means the positive ions are on the
outside. Depolarization = An incoming message that stimulates the axon. Positive ions go from outside to the inside.
Repolarization = Allows ions to escape axons. Positive ions go from inside to the outside.
Refraction = When ions go back to their original places.
Synapse: Synapse Structure
Function:
1. The Action Potential reaches the axon terminal. 2. Action Potential then causes the synaptic vesicles
to release the neurotransmitters into the synaptic gap.
3. Neurotransmitters diffuse through the gap and bind to the receptors on the receiving neuron.
4. The NT’s are used to carry the signal from the axon terminal of sending neuron to dendrite of the receiving neuron.
