Dear Parents of our Pitner students,

I wanted to give you some suggestions for activities that you can do at home with your children. Reading together is a great bonding experience, and it develops a love for good literature. Take selfies while reading together and keep them as special memories. Children grow up so fast.

Look for additional resources at the end of this list.

Kindergarten

March is “Monster Month” in the library at Pitner. Students were introduced to this little treasure, I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll. If you want to reread, check out www.storylineonline.net …..

https://www.storylineonline.net/books/i-need-my-monster/

We did not get to read this classic, but students always find it to be a favorite. We have 3 copies of this book in the Media Center, and it will fly off the shelf after it is introduced. Notice the size of the pictures as you read this story. They get bigger as the story will climax, and they will get smaller as the story comes to an end. Don’t forget to have a “WILD RUMPUS” throughout the house when finished. Keep it memorable and FUN! You could even assign a bit of writing to go along with these. What imaginary monster would you have a rumpus with?

First Grade

Students in 1st grade learned the differences and similarities between these two marsupials. Although koalas live in Australia in their natural habitat and opossums live in North and South America, the female of both animals keep their babies in a pouch on their stomach. The students were excited when they discovered that koala babies are the size of a jellybean and opossums play dead when they are frightened.

Students were supposed to work with a partner this next week to compare & contrast two more animals. Your child can begin their research using PebbleGo in Cobb Digital Library. Here is what you need to know:

Click on Cobb Digital Library (CDL) link, which can be found on Pitner’s home page or the school district’s page. You will need to use your child’s Office 365 login to access CDL. Primary students have not been trained due to the length of the login, but I will provide that for you.

Once you are logged in, you should see the word “databases” on the left-hand side of the page. Take a peek at all of the databases that we offer. PebbleGo Animals is one of them. Under mammals, students were to compare a Blue Whale to a Gray Whale, OR a Humpback Whale to a Killer Whale, OR a Sea Lion to a Seal. Have FUN and discover the similarities and differences of all these animals.

Second Grade

We have been working on fairytales, folktales, and Legends. One of my favorite titles (and in my top 10) is Sophie’s Masterpiece by Eileen Spinelli. Get the box of tissues. It may bring a tear or two.

Just for FUN and a few GIGGLES with Arnie the Doughnut by Laurie Keller:

Third Grade

During times like this, children (at this age) have a lot of questions. Sometimes the best way to approach this topic is through a great picture book. Who knows, the best way to cure a virus AND a picky eater is plain old lima beans.

This is a GREAT story about staying true to who you are, no matter what others may think or say about you.

Fourth grade

We just finished our annual “State Fair” this year. The students researched a state within the U.S. and presented a report on that state. As a culminating activity, we had a state fair carnival this past Friday, which included games & prizes. Here are a few pictures from that experience.

Parents, teachers, and students gave the reports & QR code videos a BIG thumbs up. 😊

When we return, students will have the opportunity to travel through 100+ years in 45 minutes, as we journey the Western Expansion through a Reader’s Theater. We will find out how we acquired each state within the United States.

As students prepare for this lesson, perhaps they can find out when the state that they researched became part of the United States and how it became part of our great nation.

Take less than 2 minutes to get a jumpstart on this incredible and true story:

Fifth Grade

I have a Scavenger Hunt through Cobb Digital Library planned for this grade level. Stay tuned....

Scholastic isn’t just book fairs. Check out this resource for continued learning at home. It is broken down by grade level, and each group has 5 days of books and articles to read, videos to watch on the topic, as well as tasks to complete.

Cobb Digital Library, or CDL is FULL of great resources, such as eBooks, educational games, and wonderful databases for research. Check them out by clicking on the link on Pitner’s home page or Cobb County’s homepage. You can also find it on the Media Center blog. Once the link is opened, log in. This is the home log in.
