The New Cooperative Patent Classification(CPC)
What is it ? A new patent classification system jointly developed by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the United States Patent & Trademark Office(USPTO).
Why was it developed ?To harmonize the previous USPTO & EPO classification systems & to bring the
best practices from each Office together. For the EPO to ensure IPC (International Patent Classification-the WIPO system) compliance & eliminate need for EPO to classify U.S. patent documents.
At the USPTO to provide an up-to date classification system that is internationally compatible.
When ? The USPTO & EPO began classifying documents in CPC on 2013 with the final transition on Jan. 1, 2015
