CPD Programme 2017/18
STRAND 1: Monday Night Training SessionsThese are one hour courses, hosted by a hub venue school in response to the training needs identified by partner schools within the TSA. All run from 4pm to 5pm at the venue outlined. (Pages 3-6)
STRAND 2: Working CollaborativelyYorkshire TSA run a number of networks designed to meet once a term to enable professionals to work together with colleagues from other schools. For each network, a lead school has been identified for both the A1 corridor and the NE, to co-ordinate the networks, although the meetings are likely to be at different venues throughout the year. (Page 7)
STRAND 3: Yorkshire Leadership CommunityIn partnership with Red Kite, Yorkshire Inclusive, NYCC and Education Leeds, we offer a number of leadership programmes from Aspiring Leaders, through Middle Leadership and Senior Leadership as well as offering Headship programmes. (Pages 8-9)
STRAND 4: Masters ProgrammeIn partnership with Leeds Trinity University, we are able to offer a Masters programme, based around the Yorkshire TSA CPD programme, and involving 5 twilight sessions and one full day of study at the university. (Page 10)
STRAND 5: ConferencesThe ‘Collaborate for Success’ (C4S) Conference, is a whole day event co-ordinated by six schools (King James’s, Sherburn, Tadcaster, Thirsk, St. Aidan’s and St. John Fisher) to share good practice in key areas between schools. In addition to this, there will be half day conferences for both Newly Qualified Teachers and Recently Qualified Teachers, to develop their practice and provide further tailored training, according to identified needs and priorities. (Page 11)
The Continuing Professional Development Programme offered by Yorkshire TSA has a number of strands, each of which is detailed in this booklet.
In addition to the scheduled strands above, there are more flexible and bespoke opportunities for CPD, as below:
OUR CPD PROGRAMME 2017/18
Shadowing OpportunitiesFor those who wish to gain experience or develop their understanding of a particular role, we offer the opportunity to shadow someone in that role at another school. If you are interested, please contact either the CPD Co-ordinator in your home school, or email the administrator: [email protected]
Additional ProvisionIn addition to the formally organised strands, Yorkshire TSA also disseminates training opportunities from other providers in areas such as First Aid and Duke of Edinburgh that may be of interest to partner schools. Information about these opportunities will be emailed to schools by our administrator. The first of these events is a session on ‘Mindfulness’ on September 28th, 4-7pm at Gateways School. At this session an external speaker will be delivering a session demonstrating a mixture of theory and practical techniques. A light tea will be included. This event is open to anyone in the YTSA but places are limited. Please book onto this session via Eventbrite in the usual way. Please see ‘how to book’ section at the back of this booklet.
CPD Programme 2017/18

This year, as a group of YTSA schools, we have identified 6 Themes for our CPD that we feel reflect our priorities, current research and ongoing areas for development. These are listed below and a brief introduction given to each of the sessions within Themes 1-6. In considering your own priorities for the coming year and in planning your own professional development, you are very welcome to dip in and out of the Themes, or to attend all sessions within one Theme. There are usually two venues for each session in the A1 corridor, and often a repeat session in the NE of the region, in order to help with geography and travel. Again, you are very welcome to attend whichever is the most practical.
STRAND 1 Monday Night Training Sessions
THEME ONE: CHALLENGES OF THE NEW CURRICULUMWe all understand the move from modular to linear examinations and the increased rigour that we have been promised and/or are experiencing within our subject area. This Theme is designed to pursue the issues and challenges raised by this current reality in education.
THEME TWO: PREPARATION FOR INSPECTIONSensible and practical advice will be given to senior leaders, middle leaders and classroom teachers in order to facilitate good preparation for inspection.
THEME THREE: STUDENT WELLBEINGAt a time when mental health is being recognised more readily as a priority, how do we understand the basics and try to promote good mental health for the students in our care? This Theme explores the issues that are often seen as pastoral, but in reality, are issues for every teaching professional to address.
SESSION 1 - Academic transition (literacy)
Target audience: Senior and middle leaders, all teachers (not English Teachers)
Summary: A more rigorous KS1/2 curriculum has changed the nature of the cohorts who arrive in our schools. Together with the significant increases in the ‘literacy’ requirement at GCSE and A level this has heightened the need for a coordinated ‘whole school’ approach to literacy. This session will explore strategies that can be implemented at a whole school level, within departments and by individual teachers.
SESSION 1 - Inspection for senior leaders
Target audience: Senior leaders
Summary: The session will be delivered by a YTSA colleague with significant experience of Ofsted inspections, and a current member of SLT with recent experience of inspection. The aim is to reduce the myths and to give practical advice for how to prepare sensibly for inspection.
SESSION 1 - Wellbeing/mindfulness
Target audience: All teachers and leaders
Summary: This session will unpack the current thinking on mindfulness and what we mean by wellbeing, how to promote it in ourselves and our students, and its importance in our classrooms.
SESSION 3 - Memory for learning
Target audience: All teachers
Summary: The cognitive processes involved in absorbing and remembering new information can be complicated, yet this is fundamental to preparing students for success in our examined system of education. This session will give practical strategies to help our students to make the best use of their capacities to remember, in order to aid their learning.
SESSION 3 - Inspection for classroom teachers
Target audience: Classroom teachers
Summary: The session will be delivered by a YTSA colleague with significant experience of Ofsted inspections , and a senior leader recently inspected, sharing experience on marking and assessment. The aim is to reduce the myths and to give practical advice for how to prepare sensibly for inspection.
SESSION 3 - Mental health part 2
Target audience: All teachers and leaders
Summary: A follow up to the initial session by a specialist in the field, with a focus on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
SESSION 2 - Academic transition (numeracy)
Target audience: Senior and middle leaders, all teachers (not Maths teachers)
Summary: A more rigorous KS1/2 curriculum has changed the nature of the cohorts who arrive in our schools. Furthermore, the ‘numeracy’ requirement in all GCSEs/A levels has increased significantly. We can help each other by understanding, then teaching numeracy in a uniform and targeted way across the curriculum. This session will address both of these issues.
SESSION 2 - Inspection for middle leaders
Target audience: Middle leaders
Summary: The session will be delivered by a YTSA colleague with significant experience of Ofsted inspections, and a current member of SLT with recent experience of inspection. The aim is to reduce the myths and to give practical advice for how to prepare sensibly for inspection.
SESSION 2 - Mental health part 1
Target audience: All teachers and leaders
Summary: Talking about mental health is important and this session will address the fundamentals of preserving and promoting our own mental health and that of the students with whom we work.
SESSION 4 - Testing and recall (revision)
Target audience: All teachers
Summary: What is the value of regular, low stakes testing as part of learning? The ‘testing effect’ has received renewed interest in education as the exam system has changed to favour a more linear approach.
These questions will be considered during this session and practical strategies offered in order to maximise the use of limited time to teach large and demanding specifications.

THEME FOUR: DEVELOPING MORE EFFECTIVE LEARNERSLearning behaviours develop from an early age and are reinforced as we grow by experiences at school and at home. As more experienced learners, we understand that it is critical for the younger learners in our care, to develop these important behaviours so that they can access learning throughout their adult lives, succeed in examinations and in the world of work.
THEME FIVE: MANAGEABLE AND MEANINGFULOur need for efficiency has to be balanced with our sense of a job well done! Amidst the many educational changes that are taking place and the pressure on resources, it is only right to check that we are working as ‘smartly’ as we can. This theme aims to offer strategies that are both effective and efficient.
SESSION 1 - Metacognition
Target audience: All teachers
Summary: Learning to learn or ‘metacognition’ is one of the EEF’s most effective classroom strategies. This session will give the basics and let you try out your own powers of metacognition. It will explain why it is important for our students to develop their own learning skills, in order to unlock a world of content/skills across all disciplines. Practical ideas and resources will be given during the session.
SESSION 1 - Feedback/workload
Target audience: Teachers and leaders
Summary: The advice about marking may seem contradictory, but there is clear evidence that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to writing on students’ work. This session will look at the evidence regarding feedback, marking and offer practical alternatives to piles of exercise books.
SESSION 3 - Coaching for pupils/teachers
Target audience: Teachers and leaders
Summary: How do we help people to improve? How do we ‘coach’ rather than teach? As teachers and leaders, we can benefit from learning basic coaching skills.
SESSION 3 - Questioning
Target audience: Classroom teachers and subject leaders
Summary: Teachers ask hundreds of questions every week but do we plan them as carefully as we should? Effective questioning can be a powerful tool for learning. This session will introduce ideas to help you to train your classes to answer questions well and to use questioning as a way of minimising workload and maximising learning.
SESSION 2 - Critical thinking
Target audience: All classroom teachers
Summary: The session will initially consider the importance of developing critical thinking and decision making skills in our students. Teaching methods that promote these critical thinking skills and develop students’ abilities to solve non-routine problems, analyse information to make informed decisions and critically evaluate sources, opinions and actions will be shared and discussed. Particular focus will be given to effective and teacher-friendly methods that can work within the confines of content heavy specifications, workload pressures and reduced contact time.
SESSION 2 - Home learning
Target audience: Teachers and leaders (secondary phase)
Summary: Relationships between home and school are critical to the success of any school. How do we, as teachers and leaders, empower parents to help their children to succeed in school? Is the work we set in the best possible format and are we using the many and varied on line tools to their full potential? How much and what type of homework should and shouldn’t be set across the secondary age range?
SESSION 4 - Resilience
Target audience: All teachers
Summary: Our ability to ‘bounce back’ from disappointment is a critical learning behaviour and one which, as adults, we have generally honed over time. How do we most effectively develop this in our students? Charity ‘Young Minds’ will be involved in the delivery of this session.
SESSION 4 - Effective use of educational research
Target audience: All teachers and leaders
Summary: How can we re-engage with educational research? As classroom teachers, how might we implement these new ideas in an ethical and constructive way? How do we go about evaluating and measuring the impact of new practices? This session will offer the basics for understanding and applying educational research in the classroom, avoiding ‘fads’ and finding out what works.
THEME SIX: EFFECTIVE TARGETING OF PUPIL GROUPSOur focus, as teachers and school leaders, is often shifted from one sub-group to another, within our whole school cohort. This may be due to our student outcomes, the priorities of those to whom we are accountable or the needs of our current cohort of students. This Theme aims to offer research based training for those whose priority is engaging boys, pupil premium or teaching students on the autistic spectrum.
SESSION 1 - Engaging boys
Target audience: Classroom teachers
Summary: Against a national picture of girls outperforming boys at every level in our schools, we look at the strategies that you can employ in classrooms and on a whole school basis, so that our boys are more fully engaged in their learning.
SESSION 3 - SEND Autism
Target audience: Classroom teachers
Summary: How to meet the range of needs of pupils diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder is a challenge to most mainstream classroom teachers and one which this session aims to address. It will give sensible and workable advice for those teaching pupils with this particular special educational need.
SESSION 2 - Pupil premium including high ability
Target audience: School leaders and teachers
Summary: What does the research say about disadvantage? What are the approaches that schools and classrooms can put in place in order to try to enable those we class as ‘disadvantaged’ to succeed in education? Schools will share experiences and resources and the session will aim to offer advice to those involved in working with pupil premium students, including the most able.

STRAND 4 Masters ProgrammeAgain this year, in partnership with Leeds Trinity University, it is possible to gain accreditation for your CPD studies with participation in the in-school training combined with a reflective journal counting as 60 credits towards an MA.
There are already two cohorts progressing through the Masters programme with YTSA and we are looking to recruit a third cohort in the Autumn term.In this year long programme, you will complete two units: Unit 1- Reflecting on Professional Practice and teachingUnit 2- Learning and Assessment(Both of which are worth 30 credits) Unit 1 is achieved by attendance at YTSA training courses, in combination with a 3000 word reflective journal. Unit 2 is achieved through attendance at one full day of training at Leeds Trinity University and 3 twilight sessions at a YTSA school. A 4000 word portfolio of evidence should be submitted by September 2018.
Those staff who then wish to pursue the full Masters will be able to undertake the dissertation element of the course with Leeds Trinity, or any other Higher Education provider. Funding for participation in this programme will need to be agreed between each participant and their school; further details regarding cost and application can be obtained from our administrator: [email protected]
