The Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA)was established in 1979 at Anand, Gujarat with thesupport of the Swiss Agency for Development andCo-operation (SDC), the Government of India, theGovernment of Gujarat, the erstwhile Indian DairyCorporation and the National Dairy DevelopmentBoard (NDDB) to provide management education, training, research and consultancy support to co-operatives and rural development organisations inIndia. Based on the successful experience of thedairy farmers of Gujarat, milk producers in manyother states were being organised into dairy co-operatives, known as Anand Pattern Co-operatives(APCs). Over the years, as some of the basicprinciples of APCs began to be applied to othercommodity sectors, such as oilseeds, fruits andvegetables, forestry, and fisheries, IRMAs clienteleand activities also diversified to include otherforms of organisations and other sub sectors. Inthis process, IRMA has brought within its ambitseveral non-governmental developmentorganisations, government developmentprogrammes, international developmentorganisations, and funding agencies which addressthe issues of rural development.IRMAs mission is to promote sustainable, eco-friendly and equitable socio-economicdevelopment of rural people through professionalmanagement of their institutions. The core ofIRMAs operating philosophy is to build andsustain a partnership between rural people andcommitted professional managers. This need is to beseen against the heightened interest of state, marketand civil society organisations in reaching andserving rural people as producers. There is anincreasing demand from organisations for work-ready candidates who can hit the groundrunning. This calls for a mix of work experienceas well as specialized and sector specificmanagerial capabilities. The dairy sector in India has shown remarkabledevelopment in the past decade and India has nowbecome one of the largest producers of milk andvalue-added milk products in the world. The dairysector has developed through co-operatives inmany parts of India. Indias modern dairy sectorhas expanded rapidly. From an insignificant200,000 litres per day (lpd) of milk being processedin 1951, the organized sector is presently handlingsome 20 million lpd through over 400 dairy plants. So, there is an immediate need for professionallyqualified dairy mangers in the sector.
