WHY DO THEY DO INTERVIEWS?

▪ Purpose of the résumé is to determine if you CAN do the job.

▪ Purpose of the interview is to determine if you WILL do the job.

SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS• Pre-interview:

• Find out who you are interviewing with• Find out the dress code• Find out about the company

• Read their mission statement, vision statement, and current situation

• Know what they do.• Pre-drive the route to the interview AT THE TIME of the

interview a few days before. • Traffic flow• Parking

• Be there 13-17 minutes early.

WRAPPING UP THE INTERVIEW• Typically final question by interviewer is

• “Do you have any questions for us?”

• Your questions are important. They leave the lasting impression. • “Where do you see the company in five years?”• “Can you tell me why this position is open?”• “What are the next steps?”

POST INTERVIEW• When you get to your car, bus stop, train station, or waiting on cab:

• Take a few moments to debrief the interview.• What went well?• What questions did you feel you did not handle well?• What were your thoughts on the company?• What were the names of the interviewers?

• Write a nice thank you note and take it back in RIGHT AWAY.• When you get home:

• Email or write a followup to the interview”• Thanking them for the opportunity• Refresh key points you want them to remember

THE JOB OFFER• You may get a call with a job offer. It may include

initial offer of compensation.• Don’t hang up.• Thank them for the information.• Ask them for their phone number so you can call them back

in case you get cut off.• Do NOT accept the offer immediately. That is an

EMOTIONAL response.
