Purpose

This strategy is to increase participant awareness and interest in school nursing role, scope of

practice, and educational and career pathways for becoming a school nurse.

Description

Introduce prospective nurses to the nursing role in a school setting through an Information

Session via a powerpoint presentation, interactive group discussion, and/or hands-on

demonstrations of Electronic Health Record documentation.

Instructions:

1. Choose a strategy

2. Implement the strategy

3. Complete the CQI User Survey to report your results to the ESHS Evaluation Team

PDSA Strategy

1) Identify problem. There is a lack of qualified candidates applying for school nurse (per

diem / building based) positions.

2) Analyze problem. Potential candidates may be unfamiliar with the role of the school

nurse and/or lack awareness of and respect for school nursing as a viable and rewarding

career option. Nurse leaders need an efficient and effective way to identify and educate

Preparation for this Strategy

a. Adapt a sample PowerPoint presentation for individual school or district. Samples are

available on the SHIELD website.

b. Add additional information as needed (See sections below)

c. Obtain administrative approval and/or consult with HR Director

d. Consider holding joint open house with another district

e. Recruit district school nurses to attend meeting to provide nurse’s perspective and assist

with questions and answers

f. Set date/ time/ location/ speakers/presenter

g. Consult with food service and other community venues to consider donations

h. Adapt tools (see below)

i. Post invitational flyer

j. Email blasts to local schools of nursing

k. Develop fictional student in electronic health record to use as example

l. Contact local media (TV, radio, local paper) to advertise your program

Outreach Strategies

a. Note which parents or guardians list “nurse” as occupation on emergency forms and

send home flyer

b. Post on PTO/ PTA webpage and school social media sites

c. Post a flyer in a local hospital job information bulletin board and in nurses’ lounge

d. Post flyer in local library, grocery store, salon, coffee shop

e. Blast email to parent groups with position listing and links for more information

f. Upload invitation to school/ district website posting

g. Social media post: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram

School Nurse Licensure Requirements and Renewal Handout

(a) Initial License.

1) Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.

2) A bachelor's or master's degree in nursing.

3) A minimum of two full years of employment as a Registered Nurse in a child health, community health, or other relevant clinical nursing setting.

4) Completion of an orientation program (Level 1) based on the requirements for delivery of school health services as defined by the Department of Public Health.

5) Passing score on the Communication and Literacy Skills test (MTEL).

Level 1 includes completing these four (4) programs (can be taken in any order)

a. Professional School Nursing Practice in Massachusetts (2 day program)

b. Medication Administration and Delegation in MA Schools (online program)

c. Mandated Screening Training (includes BMI, Postural Screening, Vision and Hearing screening) (1 day program)

d. SBIRT in Schools (1 day program)

(b) Professional License.

1) Possession of an Initial license.

2) Three years of employment as a school nurse.

3) Completion of one of the following:

a. Achievement and maintenance of certification or licensure by a nationally

recognized professional nursing association as a school nurse, community health

nurse, or a pediatric/family/school nurse practitioner.

b. A master's degree program that may include credits earned in a master's degree

program for the Initial license in community health, health education, nursing, or

public health.

School Nurse DESE Educator License and National Certification Renewals

School Nurses must renew their educator license and their national certification every 5

years, regardless if they have their Master's degree. In order for School Nurses to

obtain a professional educator license, they must either have their Master's degree or

National Certification. School Nurses can obtain the initial educator license and waive

these requirements once, so that they have 10 years to either get the Master's or the
