Sussex Community Rail Partnership (SCRP) aims to connect communities with their railways, helping to ensure the service meets the needs of the community and its visitors. We also:

• Promote sustainable travel• Promote connective travel to and from the stations• Encourage tourism to rural areas• Work with communities to help them adopt and enhance

their local station

SCRP works on six lines in the South-East of England:

• The Uckfield and East Grinstead Line• The Tonbridge to Redhill & Reigate Line• The Seaford to Brighton Line• The Marshlink Line• The Arun Valley Line• The North Downs Line

Many stations benefit from community station partnerships – look out for the SCRP logo at stations!

For more information about the work of SCRP or to download a PDF copy of any of the Line Guides, please visit:

www.sussexcrp.org Twitter @SussexCRP

LITTLEHAMPTONSituated at the mouth of the River Arun, Littlehampton is considered to be a coastal gem and being sheltered by the South Downs is said to have the sunniest weather on the South Coast. Add to this the two contrasting beaches, making it a fabulous place for a day out by the seaside.

FORDFord is the site of a Saxon church built c1040, which was substantially rebuilt by the Normans. Inside there are windows from 1320 and traces of wall paintings dating from the 15th century. HM Prison Ford was built on the site of former RAF Ford Battle of Britain airfield and Royal Naval Air Station. Railway modellers and hobbyists can visit Gaugemaster and the Engine Shed, which is open 7 days a week and is situated directly adjacent to Ford Station.

CHICHESTERChichester is home to the Festival Theatre, Pallant House Gallery and the Novium Museum. The city, with its cathedral, parks and gardens, sits at the end of the Chichester canal which provides a link to Chichester Harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The city has a rich ecclesiastical history. The cathedral, dating back to Norman times, provides, with its Victorian spire, a landmark over the Sussex Plains and towards the Goodwood Estate. Attractions in the city include The Roman Walls walk, the Planetarium, multiplex cinema and bowling complex as well as cycle paths which link to the Centurion, Salterns and Bill Ways.

CRAWLEYCrawley is a large vibrant town that has grown up around an old market town. Crawley is the main centre of industry and employment between London and the South Coast. It has an important commercial sector and a range of shops and eateries and is home to the Hawth Theatre. It also has great open spaces, including Tilgate Park, a public park set in 400 acres and home to a golf course and nature centre. All the town’s parks and open spaces are linked by the Crawley Millennium Greenway, a circular route around the town for walkers, runners and cyclists.

IFIELD AND FAYGATEIfield and Faygate stations are both in the neighbourhood of Crawley although Faygate is part of Horsham district. Ifield is home to an important wetland site, the Mill Pond, that supports a rich population of birds. Faygate is a pleasant hamlet first recorded in 1614.

LITTLEHAVENLittlehaven just outside of Horsham provides access from its residential area to London and the South Coast.

HORSHAMHorsham is a pretty and historic market town with Medieval and Tudor buildings in the town centre. It has a thriving market scene including antiques, arts and crafts and local produce. Saturday is the main day for markets, in the Bishopric and the Carfax. With a number of parks, a riverside walk, many eateries and a good range of shops a visit to Horsham makes a lovely day out.

GATWICK AIRPORT

THREE BRIDGES

At the start of the line is Gatwick International Airport. It is the second largest airport in the UK and from here you can fly to over 200 different destinations. Take the stress out of driving and parking the car and let the Arun Valley Line take you to the airport instead.

Three Bridges began life as a tiny hamlet, likely named after the three crossings of the River Mole. It provides access to the Worth Way cycling and walking route which leads to East Grinstead and beyond.

CHRIST’S HOSPITALChrist’s Hospital is home to the famous boarding school, which is set in beautiful countryside. From here, there is access to the Downs Link cycling and walking route.

The Arun Valley Railway Line is the best way to see one of the most attractive areas in the UK, known as the Arun Valley. Whether you are after a bit of retail therapy, an ice-cream on the beach, a long hike in the national park, hunting out antiques, or visiting a museum – whatever you enjoy doing in your spare time – the Arun Valley Line offers it all. The line can be reached easily from London, Gatwick International Airport, Portsmouth or further afield.

ARUNDELArundel with its imposing castle, cricket ground and gothic cathedral sits on the river Arun. This very picturesque town is surrounded by ancient woodland and provides a lovely collection of antique shops, contemporary shops and galleries. It is a great place for exploring.

BARNHAMNearby is Fontwell Racecourse which holds race meetings and other non-racing events throughout the year. The parish church at Barnham is worth visiting to see the elaborate carved rectangular font of Sussex marble.

BOGNOR REGISBognor Regis grew when the station opened in 1864. This seaside resort was developed by Sir Richard Hotham. In 1929 the area was chosen by advisors to King George V, for his recuperation, which led to its regal suffix by royal consent. Butlins has been in the town since the 1930s. The beautiful and historic Picturedrome cinema is just outside the station. Also close to the station is Hotham Park, with its many attractions, including a miniature railway. The beach is a ten minute walk from the station.

FISHBOURNEFishbourne is home to the important Roman Palace. You can visit the museum and the archaeological remains of the Palace including some elaborate mosaic floors.

BOSHAMBosham is a beautiful village on an arm of the Chichester harbour, which has sailing and wildlife in abundance. Steeped in history the Church is featured in the Bayeux Tapestry as it is from here that King Harold set sail for France, before the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Bosham Walk Arts and Crafts Centre houses a number of artists’ shops and is just the place to find the perfect gift. For more information on how to reach these places by train please refer to the information above.

BILLINGSHURSTDuring the medieval period, the village of Billingshurst was a coaching stop on the main road from Bognor to Horsham. Today, Billingshurst is a small town offering the visitor many facilities including a leisure centre, but at the same time being in easy reach of the beautiful countryside of the South Downs.

PULBOROUGHPulborough is the heart of rural West Sussex sitting on the Roman crossing of the River Arun. There are stunning walks across the Wildbrooks to the RSPB reserve and others through countryside and woodland, including to the South Downs Light Railway steam trains.

AMBERLEYAmberley on the South Downs Way, with its Sussex thatched cottages, country pubs and tearooms, a church and majestic castle ruins, is a beautiful country village that overlooks the important Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Amberley Wildbrooks wetland area. Amberley is also an excellent place to see the working industrial and transport heritage of the South East, with direct access from the station to the industrial heritage Amberley Working Museum & Heritage Centre.
