From The EditorI have to say that our trip to Germany, over therst weekend in July, was very enjoyable.

We went to clebrate the 50th birthday of Lissecond son in the Black Forest, near to wherehe lives. It was all a great success, despite anexhausting journey leaving for Stanstead onFriday at 4.30am and getting back home ataround 11pm on Sunday totally worn out.

Being just over 60 years old, I have to questionwhether or not I am up to doing many more week-

ends like that again in the next few months as itis not something I would recommend to anyone. The party was great fun, but I could have donewithout all the travelling and managing to parkin the wrong car park, which is also not a goodidea to do, unless you are happy to pay for thisservice twice.

Aby and Charlottes school Prom Night was adelight to cover (See Front Page) as both girlsare such ne examples of young people in thispart of the country. All you often seem to hearabout young people these days is so negative, but this evening was a great example of ourhealthy and caring younger generation.

Am I getting old and boring? Readers are askednot to respond to this statement. Please.

I would like to thank Michael Peters for doinghis report and the photographs of the openingof Roy Davenports new enterprise in NorthWalsham, while we were away.

Like anyone who knows Roy, I really hold himin the highest regard, as a very talented youngman doing his bit to entertain and amuse us all.(See Page 14)

Having once beeninvolved as both aCounty Councillorand a member ofthe LincolnshirePolice Authority,I really was nevergoing to be a greatsupporter of the ideaof having a PoliceCommissioner, until I attendedthe meeting in

Alysham TownHall on July 2nd.(See Page 10)

I found Stephen Betts approach to managingthe Norfolk Police force very refreshing andhonestly put across.

I would also like to thank Kate Royal forsending in her report and the photographof the winners of the Cromer CarnivalRaft Races, and Hubba for the picturethat he sent in. (See Page 7)

Once again we and our visitors shouldbe in for a great Cromer Carnivalthis August.

    Dear Philip,

In response to S Taylors letter inissue 15 re- Goods on Pavements.

The Chamber of Trade totally agreewith S Taylor, and we have workedvery hard with highways, the towncouncil & district council to cometo a compromise that does, indeed, try to create a continental feel andone of trying to create that besidethe sea ambience.

I would like to clarify the situationregarding the advice recently givento traders and assure S Taylor, thatI personally & the Chamber have agreat deal more to consider & worryabout whilst sitting in our Ivory

Towers! I would rather not havespent a whole morning wanderingaround the town, in my own time, warning them to ensure that theirgoods, tables and chairs, boardsand A frames were safely used.

Why did I do this? Five years ago amember of the public complained tohighways having tripped on an AFrame & Highways, having a dutyto the safety of pedestrians, had nochoice but to come and removeevery item from the pavement.

The then Chamber president, SueBrown, spent hours over severalweeks working with the authorities

to nd a way forward, it wasnt aperfect solution but it has led towhere we are today with goodsetc. on the streets.

Together they agreed a set ofguidelines and requirementsthat would allow traders tohave a licensing scheme.

Cromer was the trial town for thescheme & several businesses tookthe option not all could meet thecriteria. As with all things there hadto be compromise on both sides.

We feel the scheme was successfuland provided a way forward thatwould help create the atmosphereS Taylor talks about and enhancesthe feel of the town. This scheme was not rolled out acrossthe district and the businesses takingpart have not been able to renewthem and applications for newlicences is not possible.2013 : The town council receiveda complaint from a member of the

    public about pavement obstructions

as apparently they had been forcedto walk in the road as the pavementwas blocked with business goods etc.(no this wasnt the bottom end ofGarden St.) and have an obligationto report it to Highways.

Highways asked if we could remindthose traders using the pavements tomake sure creeping was controlled& that traders using the pavementstake care and paid attention to theguidance & requirements that werethe basis of the previous scheme.

No one wants the situation to resultin highways removing goods/itemsagain, so The Chamber were asked

if we could speak to our membersto let them know this situation hadarisen. I took a morning off work towalk around all thebusinesses withitems or boards on the pavements(not just the chamber members) tolet them knowof the complaint.

Dear Philip,I understand there have been some negativecomments in the local media about thewildower planting in Mundesley.

In contrast, I would like it to be known thatI and several neighbours and friends in thearea are fully in support of wildowerplanting, both locally and nationally.

In these days of heavy commercial agriculture, especially in this area, anything that is done toimprove the biodiversity of the locality, nomatter how small, is to be welcomed.

It is well publicised that bees and otherinsect species are dangerously in declineand everything should be done to tryand redress this.

Its all well and good planting for instant effectbut commercial plants & owers, while providinga display, do not have any benet for wildlife -in fact, bees avoid this type of ower as they donot have the navigation to collect the nectarfrom them.

Yes, a wildower meadow isnt a quick x as

wildowers take time to become established, but will provide a fantastic natural displayyear after year.

Take a look at the new bank created forTrimingham House Caravan Park (it canbe easily seen from the road just southof their entrance).

Earlier in the year, this was just a bankof brown, but is now absolutelycovered in wild owers.

Lets ensure Mundesley remains an attractivedestination for holidaymakers by planning forthe long term, not just for next month.

    Regards

    Andrea Osbourne

    Trimingham

    Dear Philip Keddell,

I hope that yourCrab Tales readers will beable to help me.

I need a lot of small gift bags to use in myfundraising efforts for Quidenham EACH( East Anglian Childrens Hospices)this summer.

The gift bags can be empty or full, new or used.

They can be left, for me to collect atThe Cottage in Louden Road, Cromer.

    Thank You in anticipationMaureen Dewhurst

Dear Philip,Pat and Sheilah have recently returned froma 10 week tour of Australia.

Here is Pat reading the Crab Tales with SydneyBridge in the background. Sheilah thought itwould be good to take a copy of our favouritemagazine and take some shots in sunny Oz!

Whilst over there they visited all the maincities and also called in on Sheilahs schoolfriend whom she had not seen for 44 years.

The family emigrated from Trimingham in 1969and so a visit to Oz would not have been completewithout meeting up with them.

Sheilah and Pat enjoyed their visit so much thatthey are already thinking about a return visit.

Where will the next photo with the Crab Talesbe taken? Watch this space!!

Thanks to Pat Nearney for this.

I asked them to be keep an eye on their displays, tables chairs etc. and warned them that there was a potential, if the highways felt that safety wascompromised, they would, without any furtherwarning, come and remove goods, tables andchairs etc from the pavements for which theyhave a statutory duty to keep safe.

It seemed common sense to us that we acted onthe request from highways to avoid the situationof 5 years ago and that busines, using the publichighway to trade, show due consideration to thesafety of the pedestrian, which should alwayscome rst. I apologise if our action has offendedany traders, shoppers, town users or visitors.

I know the vast majority of traders I spoke toappreciated the information and were happyto take it on board.

Doing nothing was not an option, otherwise allthe goods you saw may well have already beenremoved. I think my time & energy was well spent, which is exactly what the Chamber of Trade isfor, to help and assist business owners, to workwith other organisations for the benet of all

and make Cromer an attractive & interestingplace to visit, shop and do business.

Now I am off back to my Ivory Toweruntil the next time!

    Tracey Khalil

    Trade and Commerce

Dear Philip,This little brain teaser might be of interest toyour readers.

Three men go into a restaurant and eachorders a snack costing 10.

When the food arrives each gives the waitera 10 note in payment.

The waiter takes the money to the cashier whosays that there is a 5 discount on orders of30 and gives the waiter ve 1 coins toreturn to the men.

The waiter decides that ve does not divideby three so he pockets 2 and gives 1 toeach of diners.

Thus each of the diners has paid 9 for his meal.

Three times nine equals twenty sevenwhich plus the two pounds the waitertook is twenty nine.

What happened to the other pound?

    Regards Peter Ellis

If any readers can solve this problem, please write and tell us.

I popped in to see how they were all gettingalong on Sunday June 30th.

Directed by David Ros (Above seated in frontof the stage) who has produced several showsfor the Mundesley Players before, gave methe impression that they are nearly ready toproduce this play, despite everyone, otherthan Doctor Burford, (Pictured StandingOn Right) not remembering all theirlines on that Sunday.

Other than several changes going on in the waythe play is being put together, they all seem setto produce another great show for everyone

Do I, Or Dont I ?As a member of the Mundesley Parish CouncilI was given the opportunity to attend a meetingwith the Norfolk Police & Crime Commissioneron Tuesday July 2nd, in Aylsham Town Hall.

After rather a busy day, I really had no wish

to attend this meeting at 6pm along withover 36 other local parish councillors.

Having once, in an earlier life, been an activemember of the Lincolnshire Police Committeeand then a member of the Lincolnshire PoliceAuthority, I was not very keen on the idea ofhaving a Police Comissioner running the localPolice Force, instead of an authority. So along with the Mundesley Parish clerk,Barbara Baggaley and a fellow CouncillorLaura Stango we went to listen and learn.

I must say that I was taken aback by NorfolksPolice & Crime Commissioner Stephen Bettspresentation and approach to his role with theNorfolk Police and I have to admit that I wentalong to the meeting with the opinion that this

new system of managing our Police Forcewas not going to be my cup of tea.

Did I get ot wrong? Yes.

I found Stephen Betts approach to managingthe Norfolk Police force very refreshing andhonestly put across.

During his presentation the impression one gotis that there are many problems in managing andidentifying which organisation does what whenworking alongside the force.

Which is something he is working on withinthe rst few months of his appointment inNovember last year.

After outlining his role and clearly identifyingthe differences between this role and the former

Police Authority, he covered all the principalobjectives for the next few years and woundup by taking questions from the oor.

All of which he answered very well and moreimportantly in a very informative manner.

I have taken the following from the NorfolkPolice & Crimer Comissioner website:

    A message from Stephen

I am keen to reassure the electorate that therewill not be wholesale change in the approachto Norfolks policing service.Ibelieve that the Police Authority did a rstclass job and have handed over a soundplan for the future to the new PCC.

My rst priority is the budget preparations.

Norfolks model of policing is closely linked toour collaboration with Suffolk Constabulary, andI have had initial discussions with Suffolks PCCand, of course, both the Chief ConstablesPhil Gormley and Simon Ash, whichwere very positive.

Being in listening mode will be a keyrequirement of the new role.Working out how the PCC and Deputy PCC

will communicate with individuals, groups, organisations andcommunities to refectthe broadest church of views on our futurepolicing plans will be critically important.

Establishing the PCC ofce and appointingJenny McKibben as my chosen Deputywill be my other early priorities.I look forward to the challenge and workingwith the Constabulary to create a safe futurefor Norfolk.

Talking to a number of other local councillorsafter the meeting I had the impression thateveryone was supportive of his ideas andhis vision for Norfolk Police. The main issue as far I was was concerned

was his ability to get Police forces to workalongside neighbouring forces.

On the journey home, I chatted to Laura Stangowho, before moving to Norfolk, was a memberofLondon Metropolitan Police. She was alsoimpressed by his approach to Policing Norfolk.

I wish him well in his role.

    Information

Protect Our Post...................is the latest campaign in a growingnational movement which speaks out againstthe governments proposals to sell off ourcountrys postal service.

Campaigners fear that the consequences of the

privatisation of the Royal Mail will be dire for ourlocal rural areas, with services potentially beinglimited or stopped in our villages, isolating ourincreasing elderly population who cannot travelto nearby towns. Already this rm is beingfattened up by increasing prices to pushup prots ahead of its sale.

North Norfolk Labour Party, who are behind thecampaign, have been on the streets, talking toshoppers about what is happening to one ofour countrys most-valued assets.

They are inviting residents to sign the onlinepetition at: http://www.protectourpost.com/

Denise Burke, chair of the North NorfolkLabour Party, said:There is a growing momentum speaking outagainst the governments plans for the sell-offof Royal Mail and are pleased to be playingour part. The plans will be particularly direfor this rural area with an increasing elderly

population, because services in the villagesthat do not make a prot are likely to bethe rst to go.

Already the company is increasing the costs ofpostal services & we fear this will continue to riseafter privatisation. The plans are continuingto gather pace and we fear Royal Mail willbe sold before the end of the year.

DementiaThe word dementia is a general term thatdescribes a decline in mental ability, severeenough to interfere with daily life.

Memory loss is a prime example.

About 60 to 80% of all types of dementia are

due to Alzheimers. The second most commontype is vascular dementia, which often occursafter a stroke. It can also occur as a result ofa series of mini strokes or TIAs.

There are some other less well known types ofdementia such as dementia with Lewy bodies, mixed dementia part type, Parkinsons typedementia & frontotemporal (part of the brain)dementia.

Unfortunately it is a progressive problem whichmeans that symptoms will gradually worsen overtime. There are some warning signs that canoccur in early dementia, such as peoplerepeating themselves or forgettingabout recent conversations.

Sometimes people will nd it harder to makedecisions, show poor judgement or loseinterest in their hobbies.

Usually the mild symptoms become worse withthe person becoming confused or wandering.

They can sometimes get muddled between dayand night and may put themselves and othersat risk by leaving heaters or cookers on.

They may not care for themselves with respectto personal hygiene or dress as they used to andin extreme cases can experience hallucinations.

There is no single blood test to diagnose dementia,it is usually diagnosed clinically with memorytests and interviews with relatives.

Some people will benet temporarily by theuse of special medicines which can improve

symptoms in the short-term.It is important to lead a healthy lifestyle toreduce the risk of developing dementia; so itis advisable not to smoke, to take adequateexercise, watch your weight and fat intake.

A Mediterranean type diet high in fresh fruitand vegetables is thought to be benecial.

On average people with Alzheimers dementiacan live for up to 8-10 years after their symptomsbegin. Often they will become frail and needresidential or nursing care and help withpersonal care and eating.

Support for people with dementia and the peoplecaring for them is available in several differentways including the NHS, social services

and voluntary organisations such as theAlzheimers Association.

The Alzheimers Association has a nationaland a local ofce.

Dementia is a signicant disease which isbecoming more prevalent with an ageingpopulation, however help is available.

The Moment......the magic moment...the magic moment at last- the one that Nth Norfolk and, quite probably, the whole of the UK, has been waiting for...Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls -

Davenports Magic Kingdom is in thebuilding and a building very close to home.

    What a delight!

A unique collection of British conjuring, magic, sideshows & more. Norfolks newest attraction,is now open in North Walsham... just 10 to 15minutes from the coast.

The live magic show, alone, is worth the entrycharge but so much more is included - the guidedtour of the history of magic, the hands-onparticipation, the unique and pricelesshistorical artifacts, the illusions anddisplays, the shows within a show...

And afterwards, maybe a cuppa or a snack inthe Ace to Eat Caf?

Such a lot for the family - particularly childrenof every age - to involve themselves in; whatsmore, its weatherproof so, on good days or bad, theres no need to peer out through that steamed-up caf window wishing your day away hopingthat the rain will eventually clear to allow you toget on with your trip out - this is your trip out.Since the 1890s, the Davenport family have beenprofessional performing magicians & collectorsof some of the most important artifacts in theworld of Conjuring, Illusion and Mystery;not only this but they have been dealersin magical goods, at the same time.

Roy Davenport, the 4th generation magician ofthe family, welcomes you to this unique panoramaof the history of British magic and an insight intohis remarkable familys involvement, the likesof which have never before been availableto be experienced in any comparable, captivating exibition.

The search began as long ago as 1980, fora suitable site to house this spectacular, living museum.More recently and to this end, I was privilegedto be introduced to Roy & his plans 8 or 9 yearsago - in strictest condence, of course, andunder threat of being sawn in half should

his plans and timetable thereof be leaked.Together we sought out potential premisesincluding railway goods sheds at bothWroxham and North Walsham: thePaston College complex: a laundryand an empty DIY emporium.

One of the more imaginative and fanciful ideaswe gave brief consideration to was a spur offthe narrow-gauge Bure Valley Railway Line, extended to a suitable building (maybe ahanger?) on the late RAF Coltishall site.

Two different images of Oliver Garwood,

    Roy Davenport (Above)

(Below) Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee

Above from L-R: Iain Evans with sons Freddie & Alphiewho had left Manchester at 5am to be there in time.

Quite obviously, the position chosen by Roy, onNth Walshams Cromer Road (A149), turned outto be ideal spot and so accessible; magic, in fact!

The building lends itself ideally to eventualextension as Davenports Magic Kingdomgrows, fortuitous really, as the currentmuseum has less than 5% of theircollection on view.

    Visit: www.avenportsmagickingdom.co.uk fortimes & programme of forthcoming shows &exhibitions or Phone 01692 405 254

A large car park is available and single levelaccess along with disabled toilets.

The Editor would like to thank, very much,Micky Peters for covering this importantopening on July 6th.
