Always A Jolly DayEvery year, without fail, Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild are all there in the Parish Hall holding their Christmas Bazaar. This year, it was held on Saturday 26th November.As it seems, forever, standing at the front door is the always jolly, Sue Wood.Sue is one of those people who is always friendly &jolly and she does a grand job of getting passers-byoff the street and into the hall, to then spend their money on an array of goods.This group of Cromer Life-boat supporters do a great deal of work, throughout all the year, every year, not only by making people aware of the importance of ourlifeboats but by pulling in a veryhealthy sum of money.

I must say that the idea of not being allowed to smoke in your car may not appeal to those smokers out there. I, as a former smoker, did enjoy my fag, whilst driving along with the window down. I have to say the car always smelt and the roof lining gave the game away.I do agree that smoking with anyone else in the car, children or otherwise, is very anti-social. They do have a point, but banning someone who is driving alone & enjoying their woodbine, must go against one’s basic human rights as there is no proof of accidents being caused by this act. As for those making or receiving mobile phone calls, I totally accept this is a road safety problem/ issue. It is all very well introducing new laws into our community, but how is it going to be policed when you already see so many using the mobiles whilst driving.

Sorry Madam, we cannot send an officer out to deal with the theft in your house right now, as all our officers are busy

dealing with the criminalsmokers on the road.

(Issue 234)I was in attendance at the Mundesley Parish Council meeting when it was informed about the relocation of Mundesley & Happisburgh Coast Guard to Bacton and the formation of Bacton Coastguard. Norfolk Sector Manager, Tony Garbutt took time to explain that this was not “because of cuts”. If Janet had listened, Happisburgh Station is not fit for purpose, and there is a real lack of space at Mundesley station. The moved to Bacton is to amend this.I, like Janet find it sad that there has to be a move however at least it has been planned as an improvement and not a cutting back of service as implied by Janet.YoursPaul Blencowe

the Southrepps Fayre Committee would like to thank you for your support over the years and we wish you well. We’ve just finished our accounts for the Fayre this year and are delighted to have raised over £3,000 for local charities and good causes - considering we had torrential rain up until 9am on the morning of the Fayre, we’re very pleased with the outcome. Donations made so far include the Southrepps Bowls Club, help towards getting a defribillator for Southrepps, funding the annual Carols around the Christmas Trees event in December, and help with setting up a local 5-a-side football club which included new football posts and certification for group leaders. This year, her carer Tracy joins her with her own dog too - Tracy is deaf and has been waiting for a hearing dog for some years but at last she has a lovely golden retriever/Labrador called Goldie.Both dogs get on well together and Goldie is a peaceful affectionate dog - there will be an opportunity to meet this inspiring pair who will be sharing their faith at their advent concert. Dear Wise Man of Mundesley,In response to your esteemed correspondent, Janet Munro’s letter in the Crab Line issue 234 regarding Mundesley’s identity.Our friend Janet rightly complains regularly of issues that concern the people of Mundesley and I agree with the majority of what she has to say.Mundesley is not alone in issues concerning its identity. The neighbouring village of Paston has, I believe, more cause to complain. For decades the Gas Terminal has been called Bacton Gas Terminal whilst about two thirds of it is in the parish of Paston. On the other side of the parish, Stow Windmill and the Holiday Centre are commonly referred to as Mundesley Mill and Mundesley Holiday Centre, whilst both are actually in Paston. Mundesley parish has even placed one of their Village signs about a hundred yards inside the Paston parish boundary and it is double sided at that!

Dear Philip,Whilst driving on Sunday in daytime fog, I was surprised by the number of drivers using only side lights. Approaching vehicles actually become visible before you see the sidelights, rendering such lights quite useless. If drivers want other road users to have advanced warning of their approach, only dipped headlights and foglights will do this.Alan Eatough Overstrand

Dear PhilipRe your editorial in Issue 234 - there was a time when I thought, as you appear to do, that parish councils are unnecessary.Recently in the local press we have been reading of very unpleasant “goings on” at Briston, Hickling & Knapton, the latter I found very hurtful - I have great affection for that village and I felt the carry on with the parish council and MADRA did nothing but bring shame on the village - hopefully now things will improve.You then mention the 30% increase in council tax at Cromer, which the majority of people seem to know nothing about - well, they only have themselves to blame. If more people took an interest in their parish or town councils then maybe things like such a hike in council tax wouldn’t be allowed to happen, at least not without a fight.Nowadays most councils have a website where one should be able to find out all sorts of information - unfortunately many websites are not kept up to date which makes them worse than useless.Nothing has been posted on the Cromer town council site since Sept. 19th 2011 and no Financial Minutes since Feb. 24th 2011 and then not the actual accounts.If one wants to look at a good parish website log on to Mundesley where you can read Minutes of all committees & full council meetings as well as Standing Orders & Financial Standing Orders and most importantly of all the Monthly Accounts.I read recently - I quote - “a good website can say a lot about the efficiency, effectiveness and relevance of a Parish Council” - with that I am inclined to agree.Happy Christmas to Parish and Town Councillors everywhere.Janet MunroMundesley-On-Sea.

A New Chapter In Home HeatingDown on the farm things they be a-changing! New words & phrases are heard: sustainability, diversity & environmentally friendly, just to mention a few! On a farm in leafy North Norfolk these words and phrases are not just being heard but are being put into practice!....On his farm in Ingworth, Peter Spink, famously known for his starring roll as farmer Stan in the children’s hit video “The little red tractor”, and his son James, famous for, well nothing, began researching alternate ways of using the straw from the farm. After harvesting the wheat and barley for the UK food and drink industry, we are left with a straw by-product, and it’s this straw which is now being used to make briquettes, and so was born “Norfolk Straw Briquettes”!Long gone are the days when straw could be seen burning for miles around, this practice was made unlawful and so, in recent years the straw was chopped by the combine harvester and then ploughed into the soil. Now in Ingworth, straw is collected immediately behind the combine & turned into round bales weighing approximately 300kg’s. These bales are then stored in a weather proof barn so they are kept perfectly dry. To make the briquettes, the bales are chopped into tiny pieces which are then put into a very clever machine that compresses them into briquettes, they are 100% straw and held together solely by compression to create a true, green, environmentally friendly bio-fuel.The briquettes are clean to handle, unlike coal (nasty, dirty, un-environmentally friendly!) so no need for gloves! Murder In MundesleyIn fact three times, three nights running in the Mundesley Church, not in a Cathedral, as the title claimed ‘Murder In The Cathedral’With the wind blowing all around the Church on the evening that we went to the Mundesley Players production and the choir singing, the opening was quite eery and exciting before anyone spoke a word.This play, written in 1935 by T. S. Elliot, is the sad account of the relationship between King Henry 11 and the Archbishop of CanterburyThomas Becket. I have never witnessed Roger Burford acting before, but he did completely live up to and die up to, what so many others have said of his abilities, particularly as Thomas Becket. I have never been to anything staged in a church before and all I can say is that such buildings fit the purpose very well. When you go back not too many years a parish church was more than just a place of worship, but more a of market /social place.We really enjoyed this production directed and produced by David Ross, with a greatcast of dedicated people.Having taken Becket out (The modern term often used by the US Army those days) themurderers Gerry Robins, Paul Reynolds,David Ross & Ian Cashmore then gave an address to the audience explaining why they had killed him. At this point I wanted to both clap and boo each of them in turn, as they were pretty convincing in their defence. I take my hat off to everyone involved in this.Even without the aid of Tracey Loftus’ great legs it was terrific show. PK

With a team of 4 men and now over 4.5k of square footage, he has done well and has built up a great respect from his growing client base, he is also a nice bloke to deal with.He does also tell me, that of all the papers he has advertised in the best response has been from the Crab Line.

Life On The Open Road

For all those good folk who have not travelled recently from Cromer towards Mundesley, life on the open road is not exactly open.As you approach the Sidestrand Church, on your left, just past the entrance to the school you are faced with road works, while they appear to be upgrading the footpath and making some sort of entrance into the Churchyard.The lights seem to be always red, while you wait forever, with no cars coming the other way. Once you are driving merrily through, during the weekends particularly, you can clearly see that there is nothing on the road surface that you could not safely drive on or over. So why are there ANY road works trafficlights on a weekend? The answer is very simple: No one has bothered to move them off the road over the weekend.

The funny side to this tale, written possibly by an impatient motorist, is that the Sidestrand Church, some years ago, before any JCB was built, was moved to avoid it falling into the North Sea.Welcome to the 21st Century, how did we ever win a war? PK

A Married Couple......in their mid-60s was celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table. The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish.

So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!...the husband became 95 years old.

The moral of this story:Men who are ungrateful bastards should remember that fairies are female...

Special Events continued What Are You Doing On Christmas Eve?

Forget the television for a couple of hours and see the real thing in Mundesley. That’s right, witness Joseph & Mary being refused a room for the night, by several Mundesley establishments* before getting a stable for the night.Once Jesus is born the happy family are visited by three wisemen, one of whom is a very wise Kiwi passport holder.Before everyone moves into Mundesley Church for a short service followed by mince pies.This wonderful event is organised by Jo Berry and has a large cast of Mundesley souls involved and a very special young lady Rebecca Wass as Mary. The other lady on the poster is, of course,the ever lovely, Tracey Loftus.The evening’s event kicks off at 6.15pm and moves through the village, with numerous carols along the way. Funds are being raised for the Special Christmas Lunch, for both Munhaven & Clarence House old folks homes and for Fibromyalgia, which Rebecca suffers very quietly from.

One Of The Best So Far Next time you walk along Garden Street in Cromer, do stop and have a good look at Breakers Cafe Christmas Window.As of November 26th, it must be the best Christmas window to date in Cromer.As the same lady who’s deckchair won the Deckchair competition this summerhas painted this window, I am in no doubt that they stand a good chance of winning this year.
