Hi allI received this reply from Angie Fitch Tillett when Ireminded her we were awaiting her comments withregards to the increase of councillor allowance. I think many readers will agree with me that if allcouncillors worked as hard as Angie does, the increasein allowance would be palatable.‘Sorry Liz as you may have seen I’ve been ghting a

bug, managed one day then rotten again the next. If it’s any help, for therst two weeks of March I did at least 12 hours a day including week-ends, then I fell over (not literally).I have been to Oxford, Westminster, Gt. Yarmouth, Lowestoft, SeaPalling, missed Chelmsford due to sickness. This in addition to Cabinetactual and planning meetings, Full Council, Coastal Forum and scrutinywhich I normally do in the round. All of these require pre-agendadiscussions. I think I earned my allowance.’Well dear reader are you with me and in possession of an overowingsmelly black bin YES I know they sent out a leaet a few weeks ago andI read and forgot what it stated, Collection A DAY EARLY!I received an email on the subject on 15 March far too late for inclusionin Crab Tales.I think common sense would decree better two days lateand collected than a day early and probably over 30% missed!I hope you will all come to Trimingham on Sunday for one of our bi-annual Yards Sale then again the following Sunday for our FUN DOGSHOW with great BBQ, meat from Tavern Tasty of Swaield, worth thedrive for one of their delicious burgersI hope you are all enjoying peaceful Easter break in this beautiful part of

    a great country(in or out)!

    FROM THE EDITOR.

    Dear Editor,.

Quite recently I’ve been rather disappointedwith Crab Tales because I felt there were toomany adverts and not enough ‘newsy bits’Well - what a lovely surprise when I openedIssue 082 - so many pieces of real interest. The magazine got o to a really good start withthe piece about plans to introduce on-street

parking in Cromer and Sheringham, plus twolovely little cartoons at the bottom of the page.Page 3 produced a brilliant letter from GrahamJones regarding North Norfolk District Council

and the councillor’s pay rise, something whichmany people are none too happy about. It’s good to read the ‘Mundesley Mumblings’- my very rst letter to the Eastern Daily Pressin March 2001 was to do with people not

bothering to clear up after their dogs, and herewe are in 2016 and still having problems.A young man by the name of Dean Howardhad the unenviable job of clearing dog messo Gold Park before the lads could play theirfootball matches at the week-ends - we nolonger have football matches on the park butunfortunately we do still have dog owners whofail to clear up after their pets.

Then on page 8 there was a piece about a TreePreservation Order, placed by NNDC, and howit had been ignored by a company buildinghouses in Fakenham and subsequently thecompany was ned almost £30,000. Such a

pity the district council didn’t feel the sameway about the two beautiful North WalshamHornbeams which were so unceremoniouslychopped down in November 2013.Page 13 saw a very good article about work

being done by the North Walsham and DilhamCanal Trust - next time you cross the little

bridge in Swaeld on the road to North

Walsham take a look at all the work being donethere. And in between these articles all sorts ofsnippets of interest to everybody in yourdistribution area - I loved the picture ofMichael Gove ‘cleaning for the Queen’I am looking forward to the next issue of CrabTales.

    Regards.

Dear Editor,Last week myself and two friends mainlyenjoyed walking from Overstrand toMundesley following The Paston Way. Theonly unenjoyable section was through thevillage of Trimingham where you have to walkon the main road as there is no footpath. Theroad is narrow with houses straight onto theroad as you know. Due to the narrowness ofthe road tra c was probably moving below thespeed limit of 30mph, nevertheless we felt veryexposed to passing cars and buses.

In the parish news letter you say ‘Walkers areWelcome’. Perhaps the parish should considerreclaiming space on the road for pedestrians ashas been done on Mundesley High Street.

    Yours sincerelyAngela Mason

    FELBRIGG ACCIDENTBLACKSPOT.

HALF A MILLION POUNDS FORCOMPACT ROUNDABOUT.

For Many years locals to the accident blackspot at the junctionof Holt Road and the road to Felbrigg have campaigned for

improvements to this busy and perplexing junction. The signicant number of serious accidents have led to the

county council agreeing in principal to the building of a‘compact’ roundabout. The staggering cost of £500,000 is largely

being met but a shortfall of £42,000 is being sought by thecampaign.

We, at Crabtales have been asked to publish a letter asking for pledges which we will happily do. The fear is that the currentoers could be withdrawn if these funds are not found quickly.Whatever one feels about the cost i am sure we all wish to seean end to the scenes of serious accident so often visited on this

     junction.

ANTINGHAM VILLAGE HALL AGM.If Delia were here I know what she would say.

Held 15th March 2016, when the past year’s work including the accounts weregiven clear approval subject to audit. The existing committee was thanked for theirhard work over the past year by the Chairman Barry Wigg. The existing committeewas re-elected minus two members, one through ill health and one through familycommitments. Unfortunately only two members of the public turned up at thehall to listen to the proceedings which caused much

disappointment from the committee, we had expected somesupport from the groups which hire our hall on a regular basis, we will however continue to do our best for the

BIG SOCIETY 2...THE RESULTS The Fund announced its latest round of grants last week. There

has also been a urry of nal project delivery across North Norfolk with three very dierent projects ocially launched.Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of N.N.D.C and Cabinet Memberfor Big Society, was asked to open a new play area o Gordon

Road, Melton Constable, on March 19. In June 2015 a Big Society Fund grant of £5,000 was awarded to purchase an outdoor table tennis table and accessible birds nest

swing as part of the wider play area project. On the same day, Cllr FitzPatrick attended the opening of HoltPavilion, where a new kitchen, toilets, oce and storage with

disabled access plus new changing rooms for players and ocialshave been created. The Big Society Fund contributed £10,000 in

2013 towards a six-gure target. On March 10, Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Deputy Leader at

N.N.D.C launched the North Walsham Good Neighbour Schemewebsite. In September the scheme was awarded a Big Society

Fund grant enabling the creation of the website as anotherchannel for contact from volunteers, requests for assistance and

donations, as well as promoting the scheme. Cllr FitzPatrick said: “It’s always very satisfying to consider

and agree grant funding applications for local groups doing suchexcellent work. “But it’s also incredibly rewarding on a whole

other level to see those hard-working groups deliver the endresult created by the community, for the community.”

NNDC’s Big Society Fund oers grants of up to £15,000 tovoluntary and community organisations based in North Norfolk.

Since the fund started in 2012, over £1,171,208 has beenawarded to more than 147 community projects.

    Being a Trek Doctor

Amazing people achieve amazing things, often surprising even themselves. It’s seeing this happen, in the moment that makes me sign up as an outdoor expedition doctor overand over again.Commonly, accompanying medics were previous group participants, inspired byexperiencing exactly that.

My day job is as a GP partner based in North Norfolk; I’ve been a GP for 25 years. Most people on the trips are UK based, have a GP, know what we do day to day and thereforeI feel fortunate enough to get a “quick, no barred” introduction to a group. I’m not complacent

about that trust though; it has to be earned during the time spent together. Happily serious injuriesor a death are rare, and knowing how to manage a patient in an outdoor environment often farfrom medical facilities can be challenging.

The support of the UK guides and local crew is invaluable and often there are unsung heroeswithin the group who ‘step up’ immediately to assist. Group psychology plays a huge role, oneindividual may require signicant medical input and the remainder of the group may be aected

positively by this, but not always!

I did my rst trip as a doctor in 2009, toPeru, which was a quick learning curve for practisingaltitude medicine and putting physiological theory into practice (and it aects doctors too).

I try and t in around 6 trips a year, roughly half in the UK, half overseas. I would love to domore and turn down more opportunities than I can accept, maybe when I retire from the NHS...Grand Canyon, China’s Great Wall, Sahara Desert, Mount Kilimanjaro, Nepalese Himalaya,Transylvania, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Jurassic Coast, South Downs Way, Yorkshire 3 Peaks, Ben

Nevis by day (and occasionally by night) - several places more than once.

I review participant’s medical history ahead to try to anticipate any problems, but commonlyI expect the unexpected! On the trip I have access to a comprehensive medical kit. I carry acompact one in my pack and can dispense a variety of prescription only drugs. I also carry theusual dressings, blisterkit, suturepacks, samsplint, emergency and anaphylaxis medications etc.

My brief is to walk at the back of the group, which allows plenty of time to chat to people andfocus my camera lens on interesting ora, fauna or landscape. It’s a dierent experience whenvisiting the same place with a dierent group, as the people make it. Sometimes the group are allraising money for the same charity, sometimes fundraising for their individual cause. They’re nottourists, sometimes they might wonder, “How did I get here, doing this”- and that’s the special bit.

Often I encounter emotional issues in participants that inevitably occur when people are awayfrom home, family and friends; however I can be condent that someone else in the group willoften be able to help too; close bonds occur quickly between strangers.

I don’t intend to stop accompanying groups as a volunteer doctor anytime soon, it’s an incentiveto keep t and I never stop learning, aboutmedicine, human nature andthe environment.

    ANYONE FOR CROQUET?

North Norfolk District Council support to croquet club bringswelcome rise in membership

Wells Croquet Club has welcomed 10 new members after an

NNDC support project helped replace equipment and engage acroquet coach. A celebration to mark the increase in membership will take place

at Wells Croquet Club on April 14. Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet member for Leisure and Health said:

“The club has always been well-used by holiday makers butthis help from the Council has brought new local blood to theactivity in this lovely village. It’s satisfying to see such direct

positive results from our project and to see this sport gain moreenthusiasts.”

The club has been going since 1921 and in April last year NNDC investigated ways to attract more members as part of theSports Clubs and Hubs project. The Council engaged a croquet

coach for 40 weeks and promoted the sessions on radio and withleaets. There was also a need for new equipment so a donation

of £300 was used to purchase new croquet hammers.(ISN’T ITMALLETS?).

Joint Secretary of Wells Croquet Club Lindsay Dew said: “Thecooperation from the District Council has been important,

especially the eorts to publicise the club and the much-neededdonation for new equipment. We now have new members and

this has given us a boost. We want the club to go from strength tostrength.”

Cabinet member Becky Palmer will attend the celebration on

April 14 to open the Wells Croquet Club for the new season andwelcome members old and new.

Anyone who would like to join the club please contact LindsayDew on 01328 710558 or Marylyn Smith on 01328 710 963.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEIRRACE IS RUN.

Racing Greyhounds are nely tuned speed machines. They are oftenwell looked after and conditioned to be healthy in order to race for theirowners. If for reason of age, injury or just not being fast enough their racingcareers end the future for these dogs is thrown into doubt. Many ownerslove their dogs and look after them regardless of their ability to race butfor some and sadly many their fate is to be neglected or abandoned or

put down.Dog rescue centres have more than their share of Greyhounds.Rehousing can be tricky with the cost of their injuries and the perception

of their nature making them long stay residents.‘Kerry Greyhounds’, specialise in the rehabilitation and rehoming ofunwanted racing Greyhounds. Being experts on the breed means theirhealth and emotional needs can be better met. In many cases this resultsin a loving family pet.Like all rescue centres ‘Kerry Greyhounds’ needs the support of the

public.Based in Norfolk and Suolk there are many ways you can help.Adopting, fostering or fundraising means there are ways for everyoneto help. They rely on the support of the public to continue their work sowhy not pop to their website and see what they do.

Saucepan versus SoupmakerA ‘Saucepan versus Soupmaker’ competition will be one of the highlights of an

upcoming Soup and Pudding evening in Aylsham Town Hall. Organised by Slow FoodAylsham, the event will invite guests to choose between soup made in the traditionalway and soup made in a ‘new-fangled’ machine. Local chef Derrol Waller will be onhand with his saucepan while Slow Food’s JillWillis will tend the machine. St George’s Day,23rd April is the date and 7.30pm the start time.Enough soup will be produced for all guests tohave a bowl full, together with roll and butter.

A selection of dessert puddings will follow, made by Slow Food Aylsham members, andaccompanied by a choice of custard or cream. This is certainly an event when the diet is best

left at home!Chair of Slow Food Aylsham, Mo Anderson-

Dungar, says she is really looking forward to theevent which will mirror one held seven yearsago. “Back in 2009,” she says, “Slow Food

held a very similar event which attracted a largeaudience and saw our members come up witha fabulous selection of puddings. Since then, our Spring event has been a foodie quiz

night but we decided to revisit the Soup and Puddings this year, with the added twist ofthe Saucepan versus Soupmaker competition. It should be a great fun evening and we

hope all the family will come along.”Tickets for the evening, which is supported by electrical retailer J B Postle, are just £7,available in Aylsham from Barnwells Newsagents, Carousel Chocolates or the Market

CUTTING EDGE PEST CONTROL, THE OLD FASHIONED WAY. Not many of us like to think too much about pest control. If we do it may conjour images of the janitor from ‘The Brittas Empire’ or

maybe John Goodman in Arachnophobia. Forget all that and meet Alec Shearer ( i think he looks more like Graham Souness) whoexplains how we do things now.

My name is Alec Shearer and I am a professional pest controller of 40 + years,in that time I have dealt with most of life’s pesky creatures, the days of putting poison down everywhere is slowly coming to an end, secondary poisoning has

always been a problem, the rodents going o to die and then being eaten by othercreatures including Barn Owls, Kestrels etc.

I deal very little now with the poison side as my main business is controlling birds and the problems they cause, gulls, pigeons etc.

I have been ying birds of prey from the age of 10, working around the falconryindustry for many years while growing up, I have own birds at most County &Country Shows around the U.K and Northern Ireland.

I currently own with my partner Sandy around 22 birds, 14 of those are owls. Weuse the owls for educational purposes and visit schools, scouts, brownie groups and retirement homes, to

see the happy smiling faces on the old and the young is worth million’s.Owls can be such a relaxing, calming bird to hold, hand reared from 10 days old, they are more human

than most human’s. During the year we usually have at least one owlet that we take everywhere with us to imprint, to make it humanto the point that it thinks it looks like us and therefore not frightened by us.

The Hawk’s and Falcon’s we use are parent reared, unlike the owls these are left with the parents for up to 16 -20 weeks. We thenhave the task of manning the bird and building up its trust, a process that hasn’t changed for 4000 years, the furniture we put on the bird hasn’t changed much in that time either, the anklets that go round the legs, the jesses that go through the anklets, usually made

from leather, the swivel that stops the bird getting tangled and the leash that we tie the bird to its block or bow perch.Skills have been learned for me over the years that I have honed, skills that I’m still learning 50+ years on, woodturning for making

the wooden blocks that the falcons sit on, leather craft, bell making, the list goes on.

My day starts early loading the hawks and falcons into my van, usually four or ve, checking them over and talking to them like theyare your children, they respond with cat like purring, a sound that makes me smile.

I am based in Stalham and most of my work is in Norfolk/Suolk, we arrive at one of the sitesI control andthe gulls start getting anxious and giving their distress calls before the Hawks are in site, they are that clever,

they know me and my van and know I’m the one responsible for bringing and ying a predator in their nestingground. We are not there to hurt any of them, we are there to deter them from nesting by creating an unsafe

environment to raise their chicks.I prepare the food for the Hawks which could be chicken, quail, beef that day, then I get the bird from theirtransport box and the rst thing I do is weigh them, weight is the most important thing in free ying a bird,

weight is controlled by the amount of food you feed, every bird is dierent, even two of the same species willy at dierent weights. It is something you and you alone has to work out by how the bird is responding, toolight in weight and it will not have the energy to y, too heavy and it need not come to you because it’s not

hungry, it can be a matter of ounces depending on the bird your ying, kestrel or a golden eagle.I write the weight of each bird down before I y them in my daily diary, if they are lighter than they should be

I will feed more that day to bring them back up to weight. All sounds easy so far doesn’t it, but if they y more than they normally door wind is strong and they have to work harder, then they are burning more energy and will need more food, simple yes ………This all is natural to me as 50 years is a long time learning, I am a Lantra Falconry Beginners Award administration point and

assessor, Lantra supplies the only government recognised award in falconry and is a good way of learning how to look after and be

PEST CONTROL CONT...competent in ying and maintaining birds of prey.So the food is done, the bird is weighed, I now remove the jessesfor ying and t a tag, a transmitter to the bird, although my birdsdon’t leave me, there is always the chance of getting it back witha tag tted, it gives me the direction/location of the bird, withoutit where do you look?

Only idiots y without a transmitter and there are plenty of themin falconry unfortunately. So transmitter on and bird is released to y around the site, immediately the gulls go into defensive mode, calling and dive

bombing her to try to drive her away, it’s a natural reaction, theyare protecting their nesting sites, if you had someone come intoyour garden you would tell them politely to clear o, the gulls arenot polite but doing the same thing.

Now if she were a wild bird, maybe a buzzard, it would nottolerate all the diving and would leave the area, my birds havedone this for many years so are not intimidated by them and standtheir ground, the gulls soon get fed up with it and move away orgo very high, calling all the while. We are on site usually between 2-4 hours daily initially, especially if it’s a high pressure site, waternearby, or on the coast etc. This time gets lessthe more we are there as gulls leave quickeron every visit.I also remove nests and eggs and rarely takeon a job that I have no access to roofs, byremoving nests and eggs we prevent younghatching and returning the following year tonest themselves, we are breaking their cycleand it does work if done correctly.Bird control is what I specialise in and thatincludes tting preventive measures such as

bird spikes, wires, bird gel, netting plus theguano cleaning, well someone’s got to do it.I currently y 5 Harris Hawks and 2 Gyr/Sakers.

Just another day …….Alec Shearer www.suolkbirdcontrol.co.uk

CONCERT SEASON AT, ST BOLTOLPHS CHURCH, TRUNCH.SATURDAY 30th APRIL at 7.30 pm, ICKNIELD ENSEMBLE

Arwen Newband – Violin Edmund Booth – Violin Nick Turner – Viola Sarah Boxall – ’Cello Nick Mason - Double Bass

Anna Le Hair – PianoFrank Bridge: Phantasie Trio no. 1 in C minor

Vaughan Williams: Piano Quintet, Dvorák: Piano Quintet, Op. 81Anna, who has delighted Trunch audiences on many occasions, returns with a ne ensemble to

play two masterpieces embracing the tuneful folk music of Britain and Bohemia. Frank Bridge was a contemporary of Vaughan Williams and a very ne, if all-too-seldom-

performed composer. The young Benjamin Britten found him to be his most inspiring teacherand they shared a lifelong friendship. Bridge was 28 when he wrote this one-movementPhantasie Trio, which is full of wonderful melodies and rich and passionate Romantic

exuberance. Vaughan Williams was 31 when he wrote the piano Quintet. He had already written some ofhis famous songs, such as Linden lea and Silent Noon, and it is also full of exuberance and

melody, as bets a composer who was still to write ‘The Lark ascending’, Britain’s favourite piece of classical music. This wonderful work is not as often performed as it should be, due toits unusual scoring.

Dvorak’s Piano Quintet is one of the nest pieces of Romantic chamber music, imbued withthe spirit of the famous New World Symphony and lively Czech folk music.

Some biographical notes about the performers appear below. Admission to the concert is by programme, £10 (£8 concessions). Programmes can be bought at the door from 40 minutes

before the start of the concert. Proceeds are for the on-going restoration projects of StBotolph’s Church, a wonderful ambience for music-making. Thank you to events editors for

supporting us with publicity for this event. Pictures and further information can be sourced byreturn email or from our website: http://www.trunchconcerts.co.uk/.

We look forward to welcoming you at this lovely concert,
