Indigenous Education
Many people wonder why Indigenous people can’t just “get over it” and “move on”.
Understanding how events of our shared past continue to impact many Indigenous
people in the form of intergenerational trauma; can shed light on the complexity of
the situation in many Indigenous families and communities.
Our pathway of knowledge is making a mob of difference; ‘we can do this as a
village’, together we can ensure that Indigenous kids get a world class education.
GROWING GUMBAYNGGIRR for us all to LEARN - The Gumbaynggirr ways of being,
knowing and learning are held in the Dreaming, this place of the
interconnectedness of all life on earth and in the universe. This is the place where
they abide with the great mystery and it is in this place where life is reversed, and
held sacred and promoted.. where all life is held in balance and alignment in
relationship with the land, with each other and with oneself.
Gumbaynggirr Pathways in Knowing and Learning through the Bush Tucker Track -
This is a way to navigate possible pathways towards a consciousness in ways of
being in relationships between original Gumbaynggirr people and all others who
are living on Gumbaynggirr lands. Creating this pathway holds the intention of the
possibility of living beyond concepts of relationships being lived from two worlds.
Why is it valuable to learn biodiversity through the pathway? - Through time and
space, Gumbaynggirr people and culture continues to live in the consciousness of
the WHOLE. They live in a web of relationships – social, stellar, and in nature, to
mention a few, all a part of an intricate alignment in which each being has a place.
The Pathway of Knowledge is an invitation to participate
in the exploration of our place lands which the name
Gumbaynggirr holds, with the support and facilitation of
those who carry the knowledge, whose ancestors have
passed on this knowing from generation to generation.
We are so proud of Ricky Buchanan who proudly led
cultural tours of the bush tucker track to local high
school students on Thursday. The pathway is doing its
work.

interested in using the service, we are very close to this
number!

and mosaic tiles. Please contact the office if you are
able to help.
Senior Excursion to Canberra
Term 3 Week 3—Monday 31st July to Friday 4th August
Please send in permission notes with medical consent by Friday 19th May.
If you are paying for the excursion by payment plan, then the next payment of $110.00
is due by Friday 19th May.
Cooler Weather
It’s coming into that time of year where the weather is getting cooler and there are a few
more bugs and germs around. We would like to remind parents that children who are
unwell need to stay at home. They need to rest and get better, not come to school
where they will feel terrible and pass on their germs to everyone else. We appreciate
your understanding. Also, just a reminder that children who are unwell for 3
consecutive days or more, a medical certificate must be obtained from your doctor.
Parents, please make sure your child’s name is written on their school jumper. If they
leave it somewhere, we will be able to give it back! At the moment we have several
jumpers in the sick bay area at the office.
Ethics Classes at SHPS for 3/4
Our school now has the ability to run Ethics classes for Year 3 and 4
students. This will be offered at the same time as non-scripture on
Fridays between 11.50 - 12.30pm. Notes have been sent home
today to the students who participate in non-scripture. If you are
interested in choosing Ethics for your child, please return the note by
Friday the 19th May.
Ethics classes are available in NSW public primary schools as an option for children who
do not attend Special Religious Education (SRE). The NSW government has authorised
Primary Ethics, a not-for profit organisation, to design curriculum and deliver these
classes to children from Kindergarten to Year 6.
In Ethics classes children discuss a wide variety of scenarios and stories, learning how
to think about ethical matters through the give-and-take of reasoned argument.
Ethics classes are an opportunity for children to develop skills in collaborative inquiry,
logical reasoning, critical thinking, respectful disagreement, listening and self-
expression. Children discuss topics such as; imagining how others feel, how do we treat
living things, being an ethical consumer, homelessness, fairness.
Thanks to Angie Evans who is our Ethics co-ordinator and to Janet Granek who is our
first trained volunteer Ethics teacher.
If you are interested in completing training to become a volunteer Ethics teacher, please
see Gillian. We will be able to offer Ethics classes across the school once we have more
trained volunteers.

Weekly Round Up
Community Tree Planting
On Wednesday 3 May, Indonesian visual artist Jumaadi visited
the school with his friend Agung to work with stage 2 and 3 on
the Indonesian visual arts unit they are currently undertaking
which is based on his work.
Jumaadi presented some of his shadow puppet techniques to
Year 3/4 and 5/6 and then ran a workshop for Year 5/6 in
creating a collaborative shadow puppet performance. Students
built on their knowledge of narrative structure and learnt about shadow effects, sound
effects, dynamics, and stage presence and movement within a performance. Within a very
short time span each group was able to come up with their own shadow puppet
performance. Students will now be working for the rest of the term on creating a shadow
puppet performance to present at the end of term assembly.
On Friday all classes went down to the Town Green to plant a variety of beautiful
native plants in recognition of all the wonderful women in their lives, celebrating
Mothers Day. We got to play in mushroom mulch, water crystals, dig holes and
mulch the new seedlings. Thank you to Moira Ryan and the Nambucca Shire
Council for including our future generation of budding gardeners.
