REPAIR/ADJUSTMENTS SAFETY

• After striking a foreign object, stop theengine (motor)_ Turn the ignition OFF toprevent accidental starting.. Thoroughlyinspect the snow thrower for any damage,and repair the damage before restartingand operating ito

• If snow thrower should start to vibrateabnormally, stop engine (motor) and

check immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the operating position_ Also, removethe ignition key before unclogging theauger/impeller housing or disch,_rgechute, and when making any repairs,adjustments, or inspections. Remove wirefrom spark plug to prevent accidentalstarting.

• When cleaning, repairing, or inspecting,make certain the augedimpeller and allmoving parts have stopped. Remove theignition key to prevent accidental starting.

• Never attempt to make any adjustmentswhile the engine is running except whenspecifically recommended by the manu-facturer.

• Maintain or replace safety and instructionlabels, as necessary.

• Run the snow thrower a few minutes afterthrowing snow to prevent freeze-up of the

TO REMOVE SNOW THROWERFROM CARTON

• Locate and remove container of Crafts-

man 2-cycle oil,• Remove the inserts positioned around the

unit and the packing material,, Cut down all four corners of the carton

and lay the panels flat., Pull snow thrower out of the carton_

TO ASSEMBLE THE SNOWTHROWER

, Remove wrap on upper handle and alongthe side of both handles, Discard wrap.

• Loosen the tee knobs on each side of the

upper handle. See figure on this page_

• Raise the upper handle to the operatingposition as shown in figure. Hold upperhandle apart to prevent scratching lowerhandle.

° Check to be sure the clutch cable is not

caught in the handle. Tighten the teeknobs.

TO STOP YOUR SNOW THROWER

• To stop the auger, release the augercontrol bar.

NOTE: If the auger continues to creep, refer(To Adjust Auger Control Cable paragraph on

page !2).

• To stop the engine, turn key to the OFFposition.

TO CONTROL SNOW DISCHARGE

• Turn the chute control rod to set the

direction of the snow throwing.

• Loosen the wing knob on the chutedeflector and move the deflector to setthe distance. Move the deflector (UP) formore distance, (DOWN) for less distance.Then tighten the wing knob (See figurebelow).

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

WARNING: Experience indicates thatalcohol blended fuels (called gasoho_ or

those using ethanol or methanol) canattract moisture which leads to separationand formation of acids during storage,Acidic gas can damage the fuel system ofan engine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should be

emptied before storage for 30 days orlonger. Start engine and let it rununtil fuellines and carburetor are empty. Usecarburetor bowl drain to empty residualgasoline from float chamber (See figure inStorage section, page 16), Use fresh fuelnext season. (See Storage Instructions on

page 16 for additional information).

products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur

FILL GAS

The two cycle engine used on this snowthrower requires a mixture of gasoline andoil for lubrication of the bearings and othermoving parts_ The correct fuel mixture ratiois 40:1 (3.2 oz. oil per gallon of gas - seeFuel Mixture Chart). Gasoline and oil mustbe pre-mixed in a clean gasoline container.

Always use fresh, clean, unleaded gasoline.

WARNING: Gasoline is flammable and

thrower is in an enclosed area. Keep awayfrom open flame, electrica! spark, and donot smoke while filling the fuel tank. Neverfill fuel tank completely; but fill the tank towithin 1/4-1/2 inch from the top to providespace for expansion of fuel Always fill fueltank outdoors and use a funnel or spout to

prevent spilling. Make sure to wipe up anyspilled fuel before starting the engine. Storegasoline in a clean, approved container,and keep the cap in place on the container.Keep gasoline in a cool, well ventilatedplace; never in the house. Never buy morethan a 30 day supply of gasoline to ensurevolatility. Gasoline is intended to be used asa fuel for internal combustion engines;therefore, do not use gasoline for any other

purpose. Since many children like the smellof gasoline, keep it out of their reachbecause the fumes are dangerous toinhale, as well as being explosive.

TO STOP ENGINE

• To stop the engine, turn the key to OFFand remove key. Keep key in a safe

place, The engine wilt not start without thekey. See figure on next page,

TO START ENGINE (ELECTRICSTART)

The snow thrower engine is equipped with a120 volt AC electric starter and recoil starter.

Before starting the engine, be certain thatyou have read the following information:

COLD START

• Insert the key and turn ON,

• Move the choke control to the FULL

position,

• Connect the power cord to the switch boxon the snow thrower.

• Plug the other end of the power cord intoa three hole, grounded 120 volt ACreceptacle.

• Push the primer button while covering thevent holes as follows: (Remove fingerfrom primer button between primes).

Do not prime if temperature is above50°F.

Two times if temperature is 50 ° F to 15°F.

Four times if temperature is below 15°F.

• Push down on the starter button until the

engine starts Do not crank for more than10 seconds at a time. This electric starter

is thermally protected, If overheated it willstop automatically and can be restartedonly when it has cooled to a safe tempera_

lure (a wait of about 5 to 10 minutes isrequired.

• Disconnect the power cord from thereceptacle first and then from the switchbox on the snow thrower.

. As the engine warms up and begins tooperate evenly, move the choke controlslowly to the OFF position. If the engine

falters,returnto I/2 chokeuntilit runssmoothly,thenmovetoOFFposition.

NOTE:Allowengine to warm up for afew minutes before using snow thrower,as the engine will not develop full poweruntil it reaches operating temperature_

WARM START

,, Be sure the choke is in the OFF posi-tion and puli the starter handle until theengine starts.

• Do not prime a warm engine. If the en-gine fails to start, follow the Cold En-gine Start instructions on page 8.

Before starting the engine, be certain thatyou have read and understood all theinstructions on the preceding pages.COLD START

• Pull the starter handle with a smooth

rapid movement. Do not allow the starterrope to snap back. Rewind smoothlywhile holding the starter handle. If theengine fires but does not start, pull thestarter handleuntit the engine starts.

• After three pulls, repeat the priming andpulling steps again.

• As the engine warms up and begins tooperate evenly, move the choke controlslowly to the OFF position. If the enginefalters, return to 1/2 choke until it runssmoothly, then move to OFF position.

NOTE: Allow engine to warm up for afew minutes before using snow thrower,as the engine will not develop ful! poweruntil it reaches operating temperature,

WARM START

• Do not prime a warm engine. If the en-gine fails to start, follow the Cold En-gine Start instructions on this page..

Z_ CAUTION: Never run engine indoors

or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas.Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide,an odorless and a deadly gas. Always standbehind snow thrower(operator's position)when starting engine. Do not put hands,feet, hair or loose clothing in or near thedischarge chute deflector or auger housingwhile the engine is running, The tempera-ture of the muffler and neaby areas mayexceed 150 ° F,; avoid these areas also.

/_ WARNING: Objects such as gravel,rocks or other debris, if struck by the auger,may be thrown with sufficient force to causepersonal injury or property damage.We recommend standard safety glasses orWide Vision Safety Mask for over yourglasses.

SNOW THROWING TIPS

• This snow thrower will propel itselfforward when the handle is raised'

enough to cause the auger blades tocontact the ground. The auger should

stop when auger control bar is released°If it does not, refer to Adjust AugerControl Cabfe paragraph on page 12.

• For most efficient snow throwing, turn thedischarge chute deflector to throw snowdownwind, and slightly overlap eachswath. In light snow take up to a full cutand in heavy snow take less than a fullcut,

• The distance snow will be discharged can

be adjusted by moving the dischargechute deflector. Raise the deflector formore distance or lower the deflector forless distance.

• In windy conditions, lower the chutedeflector to direct discharged snow close

to the ground where it is less likely toblow into unwanted areas,

• Keep the area to be cleared free ofstones, toys and other foreign objects forsafety and to prevent damage to thesnow thrower.

• Do not use the auger propelfing featurewhen clearing gravel or crushed rockdriveways° Move the handle down toraise the auger slightly.

• The allowable forward speed of the snowthrower is dependent on the depth andweight of the snow. Experience wiltestablish the most effective method of

using the snow thrower under differentconditions.

DRY AND AVERAGE SNOW

, Snow up to eight inch depth can beremoved rapidly and easily by walking ata moderate rate. For snow or drifts of a

greater depth you may find it desirable toslow your pace to allow the dischargechute 1o dispose of the snow as rapidlyas the auger receives the snow°

• Plan to have the snow discharged in thedirection the wind is blowing.

WET PACKED SNOW

• Move slowly into snow of this condition.The greater the depth, the slower you

should goo When it appears that the wet,packed snow is causing the auger to slowdown and the chute to clog, back off and

begin a series of short jabs into the snow°These short back and forth, 4 to 6 inch,

jabbing motions will "belch" the snowfrom the chute.

SNOW BANKS AND DRIFTS

• In snow of greater depth than the unit,use the jabbing technique describedabove. Turn the discharge chute awayfrom the snow bank. More time wil! be

The warranty on this snow thrower does notcover items that have been subjected to op-erator abuse or negligence. SERVICEDATES

• Clean the spark plug and reset the gapperiodically. To service or replace sparkplug, see To Replace the Spark Plugparagraph on page 15.

• Make sure that the spark plug is tightenedsecurely into the engine and the sparkplug wire is attached to the spark plug

• If a torque wrench is available, torqueplug to 18 to 23 foot pounds.

• Clean the area around the spark plugbase before removal to prevent dirt fromentering the engine,,

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

The carburetor on this snow thrower is not

adjustable.

IMPORTANT: If you think the carburetor isnot operating properly, contact yournearest Sears service center.

,_ CAUTION: Never tamper with theengine governor which is factory set forproper engine speed. Over speeding theengine may increase the danger ofpersonal injury and will void the enginewarranty. If you think the engine governorhigh speed needs adjusting, contact yournearest Sears service center who has theproper equipment and experience tomake any unnecessary adjustments.

TO ADJUST THE CHUTE CRANK

ASSEMBLY

If you cannot rotate the chute crank fully to theleft and to the right, you need to adjust thechute crank. See first figure on this page.

• Remove the top cover. See To RemoveTop Cover instructions on this page

• Loosen both 1/2" nuts on the crank

adjusting bracket using I/2" wre.nches

, Swivel the crank adjusting bracket toallow about 1/8" clearance between the

notch in the flange and the outer diameterof the worm.

• Once this clearance is set, tighten thenuts.

TO ADJUST THE AUGER CONTROL

proper operation, tf you need to adjust thecable, because the control bar does not prop-

• Remove the "Z" hook from the top hole in

the cableadjustment bracket and move tothe next hole away from the top of thebracket. See last figure on this page.

• Pull cable slack through cable adjustmentbracket and insert in the control bar. See

last figure on this page.

, Replace boot over cable adjustmentbracket.

• Insert "Z" hook in the auger control bar.

• Start the snow thrower and check that the

TO REMOVE TOP COVER

• Follow these steps from operator'sposition.

, Remove the T-knob and fasteners on the

discharge chute.

• Remove the gas cap.

• Remove the two bolts and nuts from the

front lip of the top cover, Use a flat headscrewdriver and a 3/8" wrench.

. Remove the bolt from the front right side°Use a 5/16" and 3/8" wrench.

° Remove the four screws on the left side of

the top cover. Use a large flat headscrewdriver.

. Remove the bolt from the front left side,Use a 5/16" and 3/8" wrench.

• Remove the four screws on the right sideof the top cover° Use a large flat headscrewdriver.

• Remove the three screws from the topportion of the control panel.. Use a largeflat head screwdriver.

• Carefully pull up on the rear of top covermaking sure to clear gas tank.

• Carefully lift top cover over the three bolts

holding the lower chute to the chute ring_NOTE: This area was designed to have atight fit, it will be necessary to rock topcover carefully over these bolts.

° Remove top cover.

• Reinstall in reverse order_

TO REMOVE BELT COVER

• Follow these steps from operator'sposition. See figure on this page.

,, Using a large fiathead screwdriver,remove the heat shield from the rear ofthe belt cover.

• Remove the four bolts and nuts holdingthe belt cover to the auger housing. Usea 5/t6" and 3/8" wrench.

• Remove the two screws holding the beltcover to the top cover. Use a large flathead screwdriver. NOTE: tf the top coveris already removed, omit this step.

• Remove the one screw holding the beltcover to the bottom cover. Use a large flathead screwdriver.

• Grasp the bottom portion of the belt coverand pull down and out to remove.

° Using a large flathead screwdriver,remove the heat shield from the rear ofthe belt cover.

• Reinstall in reverse order.

TO ADJUST BRAKE PAD Cover

The brake pad is adjusted at the factory andno periodic adjustment is necessary.

IMPORTANT: Adjustment should only bemade to the brake if the brake pad hasbecome loose or has been removed. To

adjust proceed as follows:

• Turn engine off°

• Remove belt cover, See To Remove Belt

• Tie the control bail to the upper handlewith a piece of string. NOTE: This willengage the pulley and belt system.

• Using a 7/16 wrench, 7/'16 socket, and arachet loosen screw and nut on brake

pad. See first figure on page 14 forlocation of screw and nut°

• Adjust brake pad up or down to have a1/8" gap between the bottom of the brakepad and the belt,

TO ADJUST THE DRIVE BELT

If the engine drive pulley and the augerdrive pulley are not aligned properly,excessive belt wear wilt occur+ To check the

pulley alignment, proceed as foftows:

• Place a straight edge approximately 16"tong across the large auger pulley,touching two points and extending to theengine putley_ See next figure_ Theoutside of the engine pulley must be flushwith the straight edge+ if the pulleys arealigned, skip to the last step_

To adjust the engine pulley:

• Loosen the 2 set screws on the enginepulley,

• Slide the engine pulley in or out on theshaft until the pulley is flush with thestraight edge.

• Tighten the 2 set screws on the enginepulley.

• Reinstall the belt cover.

If the drive belt is damaged or wornexcessively, replace it with a new belt.

TO REPLACE THE DRIVE BELT

The drive belt on this unit is of specialconstruction and must be replaced with thesame type belt available at your nearestSEARS Service Center.

SNOW THROWER STORAGE

• Thoroughly clean the snow thrower.

, Lubricate all the lubrication points° Seethe Maintenance section, page 11.

• Be sure that all nuts, bolts and screws aresecurely fastened. Inspect all visiblemoving parts for damage, breakage andwear. Replace if necessary.

• Touch up all rusted or chipped paintsurfaces; sand lightly before painting.

• Cover the bare metal parts of the b!owerhousing and auger with rust preventative,such as a spray lubricant.

ENGINE STORAGE

Gasoline must be removed or treated to

prevent gum deposits from forming in thetank, filter, hose, and carburetor during

storage. Also during storage, alcoholblended gasoline that uses ethanol ormethanol (sometimes called gasohol)attracts water. It acts on the gasoline to

form acids which damage the engine.• To remove gasoline, run the engine until

the tank is empty and the engine stops.Then drain remaining gasoline fromcarburetor by pressing upward on bow!drain located on the bottom of carburetor,

See next figure.

• If you do not want to remove gasoline, afuel stabilizer (such as Craftsman fuelstabilizer No. 33500) may be added to

any gasoline left in the tank to minimizegum deposits and acids If the tank is

almost empty, mix stabilizer with freshgasoline in a separate container and addsome to the tank. Always follow instruc-tions on stabilizer container. Instructionson stabilizer container, Then run engine atleast 10 minutes after stabilizer is addedto allow mixture to reach carburetor. Storesnow thrower in a safe place. SeeWarning under STORAGE.

OTHER

• If possible, store your snow throwerindoors with the gas removed and cover itto give protection from dust and dirt.

, If the machine must be stored outdoors,block up the snow thrower to be sure theentire machine is off the ground.

• Cover the snow thrower with a suitable

protective cover that does not retainmoisture_ Do not use plastic or vinyl.

NOTE: A yearly checkup or tune-up at aSEARS Service Center is a good way ofensuring that your snow thrower will providemaximum performance for the next season.

COMe AJUSTAR EL GRUPO DE LAMANIVELA DE DESCARGA

Si usted no puede mover la manivela haciala derecha y fa izquierda on toda suextensi6n, es necesario ajustarla (Yeafigure uno, pagina 40),

• Remueva la cubierta superior (Yea lasinstrucciones "Remoci6n De La CubiertaSuperior" en {a p&gina).

• Afloje las dos tuercas de 12,7 mm (1/2pulgada) que sostienen la abrazadera de}a manivela (use llaves de 1/2 pulgada).

• Mueva la abrazadera pare dejar unespacio de 3,2 mm(1/8 pulgada) entre la muesca de la bridadel canal de descarga y el di&metroexterno del serpent_n.

• Una vez que logre este margen deespacio, apriete las tuercas.

COMO AJUSTAR EL CABLE DE CON-

• Deslice la mange protectora hacia el ladeeuelto del cable (Vea figura dos).

• Empuje et cable a tray,s del orificiosuperior de la abrazadera de ajuste delcable, de forma tal de obtener unaIongitud de cable holgada (Vea figuredos).

• Saque el gancho en "Z" del orificiosuperior de la abrazadera de ajuste delcable y col6quelo en el siguiente orificio,alej&ndose del extreme de la abrazadera(Vea figura dos).

• Hale el cable a trav_s de la abrazaderade ajuste del cable e ins6rtelo en tamanija de control (Vea la figurados),

° Vuelva a colocar la manga protectorasobre la abrazadera de ajuste del cable.

• Inserte el gancho en "Z" en la manija decontrol.

• Encienda la removedora de nieve yverifique que el barreno deja de girar alsoltar la maniia de control.

• Remueva la manilla T y los sujetadoresen el canal de descarga.

- Remueva la tapa de la gasolina.

• Remueva el perno del fade delanteroderecho° Use una Itave de 5/16" y 3/8".

• Amarre la bola de control al mangosuperior con una cuerda_ AVISO: Estoenganchar& el sistema de correa y pole&

• Usando una tlave de 7/16, una boquilla de7/16 y un trinquete suelte el tornillo y latuerca del cojfn del freno. Vea fa pr6xmiofigura para verificar fa ubicaci6n deltornHlo y la tuercao

• Ajuste el coj[n del freno hacia arriba ohacia abajo para tener una abertura de!/8" entre la porte inferior del cojfn delfreno y la correa.

AJUSTE DEL COJIN DEL FRENO

AJUSTE DE LA CORREA DETRACCION

Si la polea de tracci6n y la polea del barrenono se encuentran alineadas correctamente,la correa puede sufrir un desgaste excesivooPare verificar la adecuada alineaci6n de laspoleas, tome las siguientes medidas:

• Quite el protector de la correa (Vea"Como quitar e! protector de la correa" enla p&gina 4I).

• Coloque un canto recto deaproximadamente unos 41 cm (16pulgadas) de longitud, a trav6s de lapolea grande del barreno, haciendocontacto en dos puntos y extendi6ndotahaste la palea de tracci6n (Vea figuraabajo),, La care extema de ta polea detracci6n debe estara nivel con el canto

recto° Si las poleas est&n afineadae, vayaal _ltimo paso.

Para aJustar la polea de tracclSn:

• Afloje los 2 juegos de torni!los en la po[ea.

• Deslice la polea de tracci6n hacia afuerao adentro del eje hasta que est_ parejacon e! canto recto de nivelaci6n.

• Apriete los 2 juegos de tornillos en tapotea de tracci6n,_

o Vuelva a instalar e[ protector de la correaen su sitio correspondiente,

Si la correa de tracciSn est& daffada opresenta un desgaste excesivo,reempl&cela con una nueva.

• Retire et protector de la correa (Vea"Como quitar el protector de la correa" enla p&gina 41).

• Separe la guia de la correa (Vea la figuraabajo) (La correa debe poder salir sinaflojar ta gu[a).

• Presione la polea tensora hacla abajo concuidado para tiberar la presi6n del frenosobre la correa.

• Extratga la correa de su posici6n, entre laalmohadilla y la zapa.ta del freno.

• Remueva la correa usada.

• Reempl&ce la con una nueva,presionando la po[ea tensora hacia abajocon cuidado, y calocando la nueva correaentre la atmohadilla y la zapata del freno,con el borde re[orzado hacia abajo.

• Libere la poleao

• Enganche la correa alrededor de la poleadel motor y la polea del barreno.

• Aseg_rese de que la polea calceadecuadamente.

• Coloque ta gu[a de la correa en suposici6"n normal (La gu[a debe quedar aunos 2,4 mm 6 3/32 pulgada deseparaci6n de la correa cuando 6sta est6en posici6n, como muestra la uno figure,p_gina 43).

• Verifique et ajuste de la correa de tracci6n(Vea la secci6n de arriba "Ajuste de lacorrea de tracci6n").

• Reinstate el protector de la correa.

PARA CAMBIAR EL BARRENO

• Retire el protector de la correa (Vea"Como quitar el protector de la correa" enla p&gina 41) y la correa de tracciSn (Vea"Reemplazo de la correa de tracci6n" enla p&gina 42).

• Desmonte la polea del barreno (Veapr6ximo figure) de su eje de giro (tienerosca izquierda; gire en e! sentido de lasagujas del reloj para aflojar). Coloque untrozo de madera (5 x 10 cm) en et &reade la paleta central pare asegurar lainmovilidad del barreno,

• Desmonte el grupo de rodamiento delarmaz6n izquierdo de la removedora denieve, quitando las dos tuercas.

• Deslice el grupo det barreno alei&ndolodel rodamiento ala derecha de la unidad.

• Incline el grupo del barreno Io suficientepara que pueda salir de la camisa deprotecciSn que la alberga.

• Instale el nuevo grupo del barreno enorden inverso al de extracci6no

• Saquela buj[a y st la nota rota,impregnada e'n aceite o sucia, deber&reemplazarla (consulte la p&gina 38 pareidentificar el repuesto adecuado).

• La separaciSn d'e los electr_dos de labuj[a debe calibrarse a 7,6 mm (0,030pulgada)o Luego, instale la buj[a nuevaen la cabeza de! cilindro. Si tiene unaHave de torque, ajuste la bujia entre 18 y23 pie-iibras (entre 2,48 y 2,76kilogr_.metros); de 1ocontrario, ajOstelacon firmeza con una Ilave corriente (Veala figure bajo).

• Vuelva a conectar el alambre de la buj[a.

• Reinstale la tapa superior.

Centro de Servicios SEARS autorizado paraIas reparaclones y ajustes que necesite.

AJUSTE DE LA VELOClDAD DELMOTOR

La velocidad del motor ha sido calibrada enla f&brica. No trate de cambiarla ya quepuede ocasionarse lesiones personaleso Sipiensa que el motor est#, funcionandodemasiado r&pida o lentamente, tleve suremovedora de nieve a un Centro deServicios SEARS autorizado.
