We have welcomed Ms Jones (English and Interventions), Mr Naylor (SENDCo) and Ms Nunn (Executive Assistant) to our growing family, and are very pleased to announce that Mr Liu, Ms Zafar and Mr Williams have joined our strong team of teaching assistants — all on a permanent basis. We have also recruited a range of talented, experienced, skilled, resilient, driven, humble, honest, intelligent, personable and highly-qualified teachers and leaders to join us in September. All candidates went through a rigorous shortlisting and interviewing process, and it is a pleasure to inform you that Mr Shaw and Mr Chandler will be joining us as Deputy Principals (and as teachers of Languages and History), Ms Sisodia and Ms MaGuire will be joining us as Assistant Principals (and as teachers of PSHE and Mathematics), Ms Betterton will be joining us as a teacher of Art, and Ms Huggins will be joining us as a teacher of Music (visit her website at www.rachelhugginsmusic.com). We are continuing to recruit more teachers in the coming weeks and will keep you updated on our progress. Last week we said goodbye to Mr Wignal, and we thank him here for his outstanding service. Mr Wignal will, however, continue to be a part of our family having joined us a member of our Academy Council. Our Academy Council is crucial to our work as it acts as a key link between the Academy, parents and the local community. It champions the work of the Academy in the local community and provides a sounding board for me and my Leadership Team as we plan for the future development of the Academy. We will shortly be re-running our process for parent representatives to the Academy Council and would urge interested parent/carers to get in touch for more information. We have refocused our attention on recognising students for doing the right thing, and have revised students’ ‘Corridor Cards’ to ensure this. We celebrate students who go ‘over and above’, students who are Kindness Ninjas, Community Champions and Proud Learners, students, that is who are unthinkingly kind to others, who help others and look after our community, and who look deeper into their learning and ask for more. We have also started the summer term with a newly elected student leadership team, with all students in the Academy having participated in a democratic vote in the spring term. Congratulations to Tyrese Blake and Marlisha Henry-McDonald, elected Head Boy and Head Girl (Y8 and the Academy), and Curtis Nuwanua and Lema Asharafe, elected Head Boy and Head Girl of Y7. Maths Problem of the Week

A rectangle’s width is 40% of its length. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 56 units,

what is the area of the rectangle?

A prize will be awarded to the first student from each year group who provides Mr Jackson, Ms Folkes or Mr Griffiths with an answer — and most importantly, a valid proof!

At Oasis Academy Arena we aim to deliver Exceptional Education at the Heart of the Community by developing our students’ character, competence and sense of community, ensuring thus that our students will leave us as highly qualified, articulate and personable young people ready to lead happy and enriching adult lives. We are committed, therefore, to developing a deeper understanding of what it means to become the best version of ourselves, recognising that our character and behaviours are key, as is being able to ask and respond to profound questions about life and purpose.

We believe that it is not enough to expect children and young people to go on this character formation journey alone; all staff and volunteers are expected to promote the 9 Habits as well.

Each month we focus on an aspect of our character development, on a ‘habit’. Following on from last month’s habit of being considerate, this month we are focusing on our ability to exercise Self-Control — the ability to manage our own emotions and actions. When we have self-control we are not controlled by our emotions but are able to maintain a right perspective on our life, our work and our relationships.

Maths Problem of the Week

Congratulations to our Y7 boys’ Basketball team, pictured here, who finished as runners-up in the Croydon Schools Basketball finals, and to our Y8 team, who won their league to be promoted to the A league. Our Y7 girls’ netball team reached 5th place out of all of the teams in the Croydon Tournament and came 4th in their league. The Y8 girls came 3rd in their league, and our Y7 football team reached the semi-finals of the Croydon Cup, losing out to Harris Crystal Palace following an exciting match. We’re proud of you all!
