What is my craigslist user account? Do I need one?

You can manage posts efficiently with a craiglist user account. The process of creating post, editing and deleting them, and re-posting ads that have expired is much easier.

If you post frequently, or it you need to post paid ads, it makes sense to set up a user account.


How do I create a user account?

Go to the account signup form.

Enter your email address, type the five-letter verification word that appears on the screen, and click “create account”

Complete the account setup process.


How do I create an ad with my user account?

Log in to your user account.

Use the pop-down menu in the upper right corner of your home page to select the craigslist site where you want to post.

Click “Go”.


How do I edit a current post?


Locate the post you want to edit, click “manage.”

Click “Edit this Posting.”

Edit the ad.

Click the “Make Changes” button to confirm.


How do I repost an old ad?


Locate the post you want to re-post, click on its title.

Click “Repost this Posting.”

Select the category for the ad.

Verify the title and the body of your new ad, edit the text or add images if necessary, click “Continue.”

Check the preview of your post, then click “Continue” to publish the ad.


How do I delete a current post?


Locate the post you want to delete, click on its title.

Click “Delete this Posting.”


How do I set a default craigslist city for my ads?

Click the “Settings” link at the top of your user account home page.

Adjust the pop-down menu option for “default site”, then click the “change” button.

Can I remove an ad from my user account home page, or change the order of ads?

Not yet—they hope to offer these features soon. For now, all posts associated with your user account are displayed in chronological order, the most recent ads are listed at the top.


Do I need a user account to submit a new ad?

User accounts may be required, depending on a number of circumstances (e.g., category, city, etc.). In general, it is much easier to edit, delete, and re-post your ads if you manage them through an account. If you post frequently, it make sense to set up a user account.


How do I post a free posting?To post a free posting, visit the Craigslist home page and click on the "post to classifieds" link at upper left.

You can post a free ad without having an account or logging in, like so:

fill out the posting form and submit your posting.

you'll receive an email containing a link to an online form.

this form will allow you make last-minute changes and then self-publish your posting.

once self-published, your posting will appear on the site within 15 minutes.

keep your email, because you can use the link later to edit or delete the posting at any time.

if you lose or delete this email, and need it later, you can have it resent.


Can I add an image to my posting? In some categories, you will be offered the

option to "Add Images" during the posting process. You will be prompted to upload images from your computer to craigslist.

Alternatively, you can use the <img> tag to include images hosted elsewhere in your posting. There are many free image sites where you can upload images, search for "free web hosting" on any search engine. If you choose this alternative, you'll be using HTML, so see the next question.


Can I HTML in my ad?

If you just want to include a link in your posting, no HTML is needed, just be sure your link starts with "http://" and it should be converted to an active link.

For something fancier than a link, you'll need to use HTML in your posting body

Please use HTML sparingly. Users generally prefer ads with little or no added HTML.

Please use only HTML tags appropriate for the <body> section of a document.

No support is provided for JavaScript, applets, Flash, or other embedded non-HTML content.

Making Posting Decisions

• Crossposting (listing in multiple locations) is prohibited. Choose the city closest to you that is accurate for your location. Craigslist is meant to be for face to face sales, not for ordering from a website. If you post to an area that is not near your location, it will get flagged and deleted.

• Most categories are free to post, so choose one that is closest to what you are offering.

• Craigslist does not allow you to link your ad to a website. Describe your product or service and include photos when possible.

• Posts are arranged by date and time, with the newest ads showing first.

• Open an account so you can easily review and renew your ads to keep them fresh and in the top of the lists. It is quick and easy and safe.

• You can post ads without an account but you lose the ability to renew and edit the ads. You will still have to provide an email address to craigslist, but can choose to have in not shown to the public.


• We all have to maintain an awareness that the possibility of fraud exists in every business opportunity, both on-line and off-line.

• Because Craigslist does not have a rating system, and offers the opportunity for direct sales, you must be on the watch for scam artists. Be smart and insist on talking to a prospective buyer or seller on the phone.

• Only ship items when they are paid in full, and the funds have cleared. Do not ever accept an offer to be paid more money than you are asking. Be suspicious if a buyer offers you money to accept a check larger than the purchased item and wants you to clear the check and refund the balance. Report this activity to Craiglist’s fraud department.

• Common sense has to be foremost as the majority of the people using Craigslist are honest buyers and sellers.

AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

DO NOT RENT HOUSING WITHOUT SEEING THE INTERIOR, OR PURCHASE EXPENSIVE ITEMS SIGHT-UNSEEN - in all likelihood that housing unit is not actually for rent and that cheap item does not exist.
