Tre vor Cr awleyMining and protect-

ing jobs are the main priorities for Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett following the Liberal Government’s Throne Speech on Tuesday at the B.C. Legislature in Victoria.

Bennett acknowl-

edged that times are tough for the natural resource industry, but noted that a recent de-ferral program will allow mines to defer their hydro bills for up to 75 per cent for the next 24 months.

He also cited the process of Site C as

positive, adding that the roughly $9 billion project will be a big driver for the provincial economy.

In responding to the throne speech, Bennett noted the importance of analyzing it through the lens of the Liberal government’s fourth

consecutive balanced budget and B.C.’s AAA credit rating.

“Obviously what we are doing is working and so we need to keep doing what we’ve been doing. We need to keep supporting the natural resource industries and also try to diversify our

economy into high-tech and tourism and so forth,” Bennett said.

“One of the main messages in the throne speech is, ‘Hey, we’re doing really well com-pared to the rest of the country’, so we need to keep doing it and not get tempted into

Bennett, Macdonald react to throne speechspending too much money or go for un-proven ideas.”

Norm Macdonald, NDP MLA for the adja-cent Columbia Riv-er-Revelstoke riding, said the throne speech didn’t provide any de-tails to help families.

“An awful lot of B.C. families are finding it awfully tough. What’s the government going to do? I don’t see any new ideas. We’ve heard it all before. There is nothing specific that addresses the people’s concerns,” Macdonald said.

“They are saying look how bad it is in Alberta. Well, Alberta doesn’t have MSP pay-ments, ICBC, gas is cheaper. All these little things are taking cash out of people’s pockets. And at the same time, we get a tax cut for the richest two per cent. They’re are not the ones who are strug-gling.”

Bennett voiced his support for the mining industry, especially for the government’s ac-tion on the hydro de-ferral payment pro-gram, noting that with tough times in the nat-ural resource industry, it’s important to help mining companies re-main in operation.

“We have five coal mines in my riding. Cranbrook benefits to the tune of tens of mil-lions of dollars every year from the coal in-dustry,” Bennett said. “We have about 500 families that live in Cranbrook that work in the coal industry. There’s 4,000 people in total that work for Teck in the coal industry and then there’s another 4,000 - 5,000 that are indirectly employed by mining.

“So government tak-ing action to help keep these mines open and keep people working is probably the most im-portant thing that I’ve been able to do as an MLA in years.

“What is more im-portant than keeping people at work?”

Bennett predicted that the Liberal govern-ment will be tabling a budget with a surplus in the next week or so, which should help to-wards some other Koo-

tenay East priorities, such as highway im-provements and get-ting a full-time MRI at the East Kootenay Re-gional Hospital.

Bennett also sound-ed off on Liquid Natu-ral Gas—a key part of the Liberal govern-ment’s 2013 provincial election that promised a $100 billion prosperi-ty fund through the de-velopment of LNG. Bennett admitted that the price of oil and the state of the world econ-omy has slowed down progress on LNG devel-opment.

“I don’t think any-one could’ve predicted the precipitous drop in oil prices. Oil is down to $30 a barrel right now, US. No prognosti-cator, nobody was say-ing we’d be down to $25-30 a barrel three, four years ago,” Bennett said. “That has changed the price of gas; when oil goes down, so does natural gas. Natural gas is very cheap right now and it has taken some of the steam out of some of the international drive towards the production of LNG. Having said that, we have at least two LNG megaproj-ects—one in Kitimat called the LNG Canada and the other one, the Petronas project in Prince Rupert—that I believe will announce they’re going forward in 2016.”

In addition to the two projects in Kitimat and Prince Rupert, there are 18 other pro-posals on the table that are going through vari-ous regulatory and ap-proval processes.

Macdonald also took issue with the gov-ernment’s projections for LNG development in the province.

“On LNG, it always was made up by num-bers,” Macdonald said. “100,000 new jobs is completely made up. It’s simply not reality. No informed person would see that as rea-sonable. So either the leadership doesn’t know any better or they are deliberately mis-leading the people of British Columbia.”

Salvador-Bejarano is described as 165 centi-metres (5’5”) and 63 ki-lograms (139 lbs), with black hair and brown eyes.

If anyone has any in-formation on Salva-dor-Bejarano, contact your local police ser-vices or CrimeStoppers. If seen, call 911 and do not approach or attempt to confront.

The arrest, and issue of a warrant, were made following a home inva-sion in the 200 and 500 block of 20th Ave. South where a 35-year-old male was shot on early hours of Feb. 4.

Initial reports indi-cated that four unknown males had forced their way into the home, as-saulted several occu-pants of the house and shot one person.

The investigation led to Blairmore, Alberta, where two males arrived at the Crowsnest Pass Hospital the same day, one of which was suffer-ing from a gunshot wound. One male was

arrested after a search of a vehicle revealed evi-dence in connection with the shooting in Cranbrook, including two handguns.

Cranbrook RCMP members have been working with partner agencies in both B.C. and Alberta to deter-mine all involved in the

S/Sgt. Hector Lee, the Cranbrook detachment commander.

“This is a clear exam-ple of the dedication your local RCMP mem-bers exhibit on a regular basis; in this particular matter, the members of the General Investiga-tion Section and the Crime Reduction Unit,”

said Lee. “These types of serious incidents are not typical in the Cranbrook area. You will be brought to justice and this com-munity will not tolerate this type of activity.

“The Cranbrook RCMP wishes to thank the communities we serve for your patience and assistance in this matter.”

The Cranbrook RCMP asks anyone with information on the shooting incident or on Salvador-Bejarano to contact them at 250-489-3471 or CrimeStop-pers at 800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be relayed online with web or text-based tips with details at cana-diancrimestoppers.org.

BlaCk PressThe B.C. government

was working on new standards for commer-cial animal breeders be-fore 66 neglected dogs were seized from a puppy mill in Langley.

Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick said min-istry staff began consul-tations with the B.C. SPCA, veterinarians and commercial breeders in

January, and that will continue this month.

North Vancou-ver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite has pro-posed legislation that would set a maximum of three litters in three years for each mother animal, a lifetime maxi-mum of six litters and a requirement to wean puppies or kittens onto solid food by seven

weeks of age before they can be sold.

Letnick said he was shocked as were many others at the conditions of the Langley kennel, where 32 adult dogs and 34 puppies were seized on Feb. 4. Some had broken bones, missing ears or eyes infections, dental disease, severe matting, burns from urine exposure and

overgrown nails.“There is no place in

British Columbia for treatment like that to our animals, and that’s why in 2011 we adopted the toughest penalties in the country, [up to] two years in jail and a $75,000 fine if you’re found guilty of mistreat-ing any animal under any conditions,” Letnick said.

In the spring of 1912 there were 45 auto-

mobiles in the city of Cranbrook. By 1925, the number had grown to 1,100 and was steadily increasing. The roads varied from rugged to practically nonexistent. People were more jolt-ingly mobile than any time in history and for those counting cars, the increasing traffic hum-ming through the city be-came “tourists.”

Vacationers had money and were willing to spend it. They re-quired gasoline, auto parts, servicing, grocer-ies, dry goods, and, per-haps most importantly, a safe, reasonably-priced place to spend the night, all facts that were not lost on the Cranbrook Board of Trade of the day.

In July, 1920, both the board and the city combined to provide funding for a small wooden tourist park shelter to be construct-ed near the old rink on Norbury Avenue. At the time the rink and the city garage sat on the northern end of the gen-erally marshy area that would, in a few years, become Rotary Park. It was a good location for a tourist park: city-owned land with a small creek running through and the Hanson Garage across the street, near to the business section with water and light hookup and the adjoin-ing rink for shelter if re-quired.

The local prophets of tourism predicted pop-ularity with auto travel-ers and they were soon proved correct. By the following year the camp was in constant use, with vehicles from across North America

er pads with sewage and electrical hook-ups. Sadly, the swimming pool was shut down in the 1960’s and recently much of the adjoining Baker Park green space was obliterated by a city

housing project but the present-day Mt. Baker RV Park still remains as popular as ever.

Perhaps silver-screen movie legend Joan Crawford said it best during a trip through

Cranbrook in June, 1950. Asked how she and her dog “Poochie” enjoyed their stay in the park she replied, “This is truly an ideal spot.” A fact that has remained true for over 90 years.

The Cranbrook Municipal Auto CampTitled “Cranbrook Tourist Camp, 1923” this photo may be one of the very few of the city’s first Auto Camp in what is now Rotary Park – Author’s collection

registered nightly. Jake Smith, a local entrepre-neur, set up a collection of side shows and chil-dren’s rides near the site to entertain campers who were allowed to camp free of charge for the first week and pay a nominal sum for each additional night.

August, 1922, saw 122 cars register, up from 108 the previous year. On one particular night a vehicle carrying a number of singing ca-naries, a car with two el-derly ladies and half a dozen cats, a pointer ca-nine and a tame bear all took their place in the campground with no fuss whatsoever. It was so popular, in fact, that it was rapidly becoming inadequate to the de-mand and, in 1923, the Board of Trade pro-posed a site at the ex-treme end of Pooley (13th) Avenue.

The spot was “park-like”: a large field at the foot of a sloping hillside with evergreen trees for cover shading the clear, meandering waters of Joseph Creek and with easy access to water, light and sewer connec-tions and room for at least 60 cars per night.

The land belonged to the Canadian Pacific Railway (they owned a sizable share of the city land at the time) but the city brokered an agree-

ment for ownership of the property.

By 1924, the original auto camp was greatly overtaxed with the ar-rival of 30–50 vehicles nightly and so, on Thursday, July 16, 1925, the new Cranbrook Mu-nicipal Auto Camp offi-cially opened in its pres-ent day location along 2nd Street to the east of 14th Avenue, featuring a cookhouse with four stoves, an office and a wash-house complete with a cold “show-er-bath” (hot water ar-rived the following year).

Although some had argued its location would make it difficult for travelers to find as it was, after all, five blocks away from the main road, it was an immedi-ate success and all fears were laid to rest as busi-ness quickly boomed.

People and vehicles of all description could be seen on any given night; license plates from around the conti-nent. The rates were rea-sonable, the people friendly and the entire park neat and tidy. Large automobile clubs passed through regular-ly as the popularity of the “Red Trail” (B.C.’s most southerly route) grew.

Ten bungalows were built in 1930, construct-ed from lumber salvaged from the demolition of the old Cranbrook Fire Hall next to city hall on Norbury Avenue.

The Gyro club erect-ed the “largest outdoor pool in Western Cana-

da” right next door the same year, which enter-tained hundreds daily for free. Trees and flow-ers were planted and fa-cilities improved yearly. From May to September the Tourist Camp was proving to be a wise in-vestment indeed.

In 1929, nearly 20,000 vehicles crossed the U.S. border at Kingsgate, 2,000 of which stayed at the Park that season.

Despite the growing economic depression of the 1930s, the park saw ever-increasing num-bers with the city con-structing an adjacent softball field, three ten-nis courts, a large play-ground and eight addi-tional bungalows. In 1945, the Vancouver Province newspaper stated that Cranbrook was a “… city of attractive stores, beautiful homes and friendly people” and boasted a tourist camp that could “com-pare with any civic en-terprise of its kind in B.C.” Cranbrook billed it simply as “the finest in Western Canada.”

A Calgary newspaper article back in 1923 mentioned “something unusual recently arrived in Calgary … on the back of a Ford car a small shack has been built to provide proper accom-modation for the travel-ers.” It was a concept that caught on rapidly as campers and trailers gradually became the norm. By 1960, there were so many self-con-tained tourists that the park bungalows were re-moved in favour of trail-

I’ve written about this before, but it seemed a good time to reflect on

this again. A few years ago, I read a fascinat-ing book called “Religion for Atheists: a Non–Believer’s Guide to the Uses of Reli-gion.” It was written by French philosopher Alain de Botton, who wrote this book be-cause he believes that while religions may not be true, they still have an enduring value in our world.

In his book, he begins by noting that many have tried to prove the non–existence of God. “Tough–minded critics of religion have found much pleasure in laying bare the id-iocy of believers in remorse-less detail, finishing only when they felt they had shown up their enemies as thorough–going simpletons or maniacs.”

On his website, de Botton claims that this debate has become boring. He is a committed atheist, but goes on to assert that religions still have some very import-ant things to teach the secular world. “The premise of this book is that it must be possible to remain a committed atheist and nevertheless find religions sporadi-cally useful, interesting and consoling.”

The idea intrigued me. Perhaps here was a way in which we could build some common ground for a fruitful conversa-tion about differing worldviews and the choices we make on the basis of our worl-dview.

Some of the pre–publication advertis-ing indicated that de Botton considered such things as art and music and architec-ture to be among the lasting legacy of reli-

gions to the world. There can’t be much debate about that. Religions of all kinds have enriched the world with beautiful creations in the arts. Western literature is filled with references to the Bible and the traditions of the Christian faith. Musical masterpieces based on the texts of Chris-tian faith abound. One can’t go to an art museum without seeing works of art de-picting Biblical scenes.

Given this advance publicity, it came to me as quite a shock that the first thing de Botton mentions as a useful and interesting legacy of religion is the sense of community. “One of the losses modern soci-

ety feels most keenly is that of a sense of community.”

That’s quite an ironic statement, given the amount of interest that’s being paid to staying connected, whether it be via Face-book, Twitter, LinkedIn or any of the other social networking sites. But as William Powers argues in his book “Hamlet’s Blackberry”, our technological connectivi-ty is very shallow. We may be connected far and wide, but we have no real sense of community despite that connectedness.

De Botton similarly argues that religion helps to foster a deeper sense of commu-nity. He uses worship as an analogy, par-ticularly the Roman Catholic mass. “It marks off a piece of the earth, puts walls up around it and declares that within their parameters there will reign values utterly unlike those which hold sway in the world beyond, in the offices, gyms and living rooms of the city.”

Within those walls gathers a communi-ty of people who seek to know and be known. More important, the community that gathers is diverse. “Those in atten-dance tend not to be uniformly of the same age, race, profession or educational or income level; they are a random sam-pling of souls united only by their shared commitment to certain values.”

A community like that breaks down social barriers in a way that no other kind of community does. We usually tend to gather only with those who are the same as us. But the kind of community fostered by religion is more diverse. The church has managed “to persuade monarchs and magnates to kneel down and abase them-selves before the statue of a carpenter and to wash the feet of peasants, street sweep-ers and dispatch drivers.”

We don’t do this in secular society, he argues, and we are the poorer for it. Secu-lar people can learn from this practice; indeed we all need to learn from this, for our lives have become insular and uncon-nected. We have largely lost any deep sense of community, which has always been an important and enriching part of human life.

In the rest of the book, he does the same kind of creative thinking around such subjects as Education, Kindness, Tenderness and Pessimism, as well as Art and Architecture. I commend the book to all who would be interested in a more nu-anced discussion of the relationship be-tween religion and atheism.

Tre vor Cr awleyA UBC student is asking East Koote-

nay residents to send him any recent pictures of bobcats or lynx for a project on mapping project on the habitats of both species.

Lynx are found in boreal forests across Canada and Alaska, as well as in the mountain ranges extending south into Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wy-oming and Colorado.

Bobcats, in contrast, are found in deserts and grasslands of the contigu-ous United States, as well as in south-ern Canada.

TJ Gooliaff, a biologist in training at the UBC Okanagan campus, is hypoth-

esizing that bobcats are being pushed northwards and into higher elevations due to climate change, which is lead-ing to earlier springs and lower snow levels in western North America.

Gooliaff is looking for any kinds of photos of bobcats or lynx from trail cameras to conventional pictures along with location information as specific as possible, such as UTM or longitude/latitude coordinates. Bar-ring that, any roads or landmarks, nearest town or watershed or Manage-ment Unit would be appreciated.

Anyone with any photos can email them to Gooliaff at: [email protected].

impactI am writing in response to a story published on February 4,

2016 entitled ‘Woman gets two years for driving through window’.Please note: Stacey Lundin was sentenced as follows: 1. 60 days intermittent prison term2. 24 months driving suspension (three months already

served, 21 months remaining).3. One year probation. So she got two years, meaning two years of driving suspen-

sion, not two years in jail which some readers have thought. The article stated we were “not seriously injured.” Although

we were not in ICU, our injuries have been serious. Our dog and I were both pinned under the vehicle in our beds. My trauma-tized dog suffered from chronic back pain and was euthanized eight months after the crash. Nineteen months after the crash I am still dealing with my injuries.

My daughter was very narrowly missed by both the wall and the car which both landed mere centimetres from her while she was sleeping. She still suffers from psychological trauma from this event. This, in my opinion, is a very serious injury, and even worse than my painful and unpleasant physical injuries. Even though she wasn’t touched physically, my daughter’s injuries are deep, long-lasting, and unfortunately, very serious.

One more clarification. After the car crashed through the win-dow it plowed through the entire bedroom, over our bed, and it drove right into the kitchen.

So “Woman gets 60 days in prison and 24 months of driving suspension for Blood Alcohol Content over .08 causing bodily harm after plowing over bed where family was sleeping” would be more accurate.

deer debacleIn “Godfather III,” Al Pacino as Don Corleone said, “Just as I

thought I was out of it, they just keep dragging me back into it.” This is where I now find myself; once again entering the great Deer Debacle.

I was hoping that after the two night stalkers from up the val-ley were caught destroying deer traps and received what I thought was nothing but a mere slap on the wrist, the provincial government was finally going to own up to their stewardship over the deer. I should have known better.

It seems to me that Foot Dragging 101 seems to be part of large government. I was a member of the Deer Committee for quite a while but it became obvious to me that the provincial govern-ment was just going to sit on the sidelines and hope that some magic wand would appear and with one swipe the issue would just disappear. Well, that’s not happening.

On January 29, 2016, a letter to the editor submitted by Wil-liam G. Hills shared the following. With due diligence, Mr. Hills searched out the record of Ms. White from ‘back East. He said, ‘I did not find great support for any of her endeavors. Ms. White failed four times in attempts for election in Toronto, and co-au-thored an animal rights bill listing animals as living property. That bill died in the Senate. She seems to be leader of a group that feel they speak for the deer. I like to think of these followers as ‘Deer Whisperers’. I think this person should just stay back East and look after her own backyard. We in the West are capable of looking after our own.

There was mention of $25,000 coming this way to help us with our deer problem. Why not direct this money to pay for the dam-

aged traps and court costs? The provincial government was elected by a majority of votes,

yet when a majority think a cull is necessary, they choose to ig-nore it. I just don’t get it. The government doesn’t even seem to listen to the people who work for them like the Conservations Officers and other informed professionals. However, they seem willing to listen to amateurs and just let them carry on with ex-periments, translocation, and of course the highly touted hazing. Those dogs are sheep dogs, not deer dogs. LOL

I worked with Ron Kerr while I was on the deer committee and had nothing but respect for him and his fellow contractor for the cull. They were not involved for any monetary gain by any stretch of the imagination. These two men know more and re-spect wildlife more than all those that are against the cull put to-gether. They understand the necessity of keeping the deer at a manageable number. Other communities are seeking out this type of expertise; and Ms. White, if you don’t think what they do doesn’t take something out of those men, you are sadly mistaken. Anytime you end the life of some creature, you leave a little of yourself.

But there again, you have the hand wringers and the realists. It is likely that the inevitable cull will be put on hold. Oh, by the way, surprise, surprise, I actually happen to like deer.

Catholic schools Week: Feb 14-20As we reflect on the rich history of the Catholic faith in Cran-

brook, we are taken back to 1899 when the first Catholic Church, St. Mary’s, was established in our downtown core. A Catholic school followed in 1914, which was later known as ‘10th Avenue School’, but closed a few years later and went on to become the old Cranbrook High School. A rectory followed in 1922 to pro-vide living quarters for priests, and due to the growth of the con-gregation it was decided a larger church was required. Through the hard work and generosity of the founding people, 1927 saw the current version of St. Mary’s church constructed where it now stands. Once again, the people of the day recognized the value in having their own Catholic school and through the efforts of many strong local families, St. Mary’s School was established on its current location in 1965.

The school has enjoyed a long standing reputation for excel-lence in Catholic education. Originally staffed and supported by various priests and nuns, the school has become a foundation for religious education in Cranbrook, with today’s families support-ing the importance of teaching our faith in a secular world. To-day’s school is staffed by devoted and passionate people that combine current pedagogy with many of the traditions and prac-tices set by former staff such as the beloved ‘Sister Ralph’. The school continues to thrive and is proud to provide children with a solid foundation for academics and faith in a kind and safe en-vironment.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of St. Mary’s School throughout its history. While we celebrate 50 years on our cur-rent location, the foundation for Catholic education in Cran-brook was actually set in motion almost 117 years ago! See our website for activities during the week. www.stmarysschool.ca

Sidaway set for WHL debut with Ice as Chiefs visit16-year-old forward excited for ‘next step’ in hockey career as he joins Kootenay Ice for home-&-home with Spokane Chiefs

Courtesy red deer rebels/Kootenay ICe

Prospect Tanner Sidaway is set to make his WHL debut with the Kootenay Ice after coming to Cranbrook in the trade that sent Luke Philp to the Red Deer Rebels.

The Kootenay Ice have recalled 16-year-old forward Tanner Si-daway from the Wests-hore Wolves of the Van-couver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL).

The 5-foot-11, 164-pound product of Victo-ria arrived in Cranbrook Thursday afternoon in time for practice with the Ice at Western Fi-nancial Place and is slat-ed to make his Western Hockey League debut Friday night against the Spokane Chiefs.

“I’m very excited, it’s going to be a whole new experience, a whole new level of play,” Si-daway said Thursday. “Just getting out there to play at a whole new level is going to be really interesting and taking that next step is going to be really exciting.”

Sidaway is an intrigu-ing prospect for a re-building Kootenay Ice club.

Acquired as a part of the Jan. 3 trade that sent former Ice captain Luke Philp to the Red Deer Rebels, Sidaway was never selected in the WHL Bantam Draft, but signed a WHL standard player contract with the Rebels July 9, 2015.

While time has al-lowed the shock of being dealt to wear off, Sidaway is excited to prove he be-longs in the WHL.

“You try to look at it in a positive way,” Sidaway said, reflecting on find-ing out he had been trad-ed. “[The Ice] wouldn’t have made the trade without getting me. You look at it that way and say, ‘That means I’m im-portant to them.’ I need to play the best I can be because this is where I want to go.

“As long as you’re taking that next step to the next level, that’s all that matters.”

For starters, Sidaway has already taken one step in advancing his career this season.

After playing 40 games and recording nine goals and 12 points with the South Island Royals of the B.C. Major

Midget League last sea-son, Sidaway has gradu-ated to the junior hock-ey ranks as a 16-year-old — not an easy task.

Through 37 games with Junior B Wolves this season, the well-spoken youngster has racked up eight goals, 13 points and a whopping 138 minutes in penalties.

“I like to take the puck wide and use my speed,” Sidaway said. “I like to bang the body and I don’t care if guys are bigger than me. I’m going to go in and if you have the puck, I’m going to hit you. Hopefully I can get the crowd pumped up a bit.”

All of that comes as welcome words to Koo-tenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce, whose squad has lacked physi-

cality at times through the 2015-16 WHL cam-paign.

“We know he’s an en-ergy guy who’s got a physical edge to him,” Pierce said Thursday. “He is a good size kid for a young 16-year-old. Those are elements that

I think we desperately need as a team — the energy and physicality part of it. I’m hoping he can find a way to fill a role here right away.”

Sidaway will have the opportunity to suit up in this weekend’s home-and-home series with the Spokane Chiefs, be-fore returning back to Vancouver Island to fin-ish out the 2015-16 sea-son.

“We want to give him an opportunity to have some sort of success and not feel over-whelmed,” Pierce said. “He will probably play with some different guys. He’s naturally a centreman, but right now our depth in the middle is okay. We’ll probably play him [Fri-

day] on the left side and we’ll judge it from there.

“The biggest thing is just trying to make sure he enjoys it and not overcomplicate things. We’ll keep it pretty basic for him… For him, it’s just go out and have fun, play hard and not worry a lot about the mistakes that will be made out there because we all make them.”

Sidaway is expected to wear sweater No. 26 when he makes his Koo-tenay Ice debut Friday night in Cranbrook.

“I’m going to play as hard as I can and make good plays, make smart plays that get you no-ticed,” Sidaway said. “Take the puck to the net… Call for the puck, make good passes, bat-tle hard, back check, forecheck — all the little things that coaches and scouts look for.”

Strong words coming from a motivated and confident young man. And that’s reason enough for Kootenay Ice fans to be excited and intrigued.

Sidaway and the Ice (9-41-4-0) welcome the Spokane Chiefs (26-21-4-2) to Western Finan-cial Place for a 7 p.m. puck drop Friday eve-ning.

Friday marks the fifth and final game of a sea-son-long homestand for the Ice who travel to Spokane for a rematch with the Chiefs Saturday night.

“I like to bang the body and I don’t care if guys are

bigger than me. I’m to go in and if you have the puck, I’m going to hit you.”Tanner Sidaway

The Nelson Leafs did the Kimberley Dynamit-ers a favour earlier this week as they knocked off the Beaver Valley Ni-tehawks, all but ensur-ing the Nitros of the KI-JHL’s Kootenay Confer-ence title.

What that equates to is home-ice advantage for the opening three rounds of the KIJHL post-season. All that re-mains for the Dynamit-ers (37-7-0-4) is to clinch the KIJHL’s over-all league title, but that race remains a tight one with the Osoyoos Coy-otes (36-9-1-1).

The Dynamiters will get an opportunity to inch closer to that goal this weekend when they visit the Spokane Braves (8-35-0-4) Friday before returning home to host the Fernie Ghostriders (26-17-0-4) Saturday (7 p.m.) at the Kimberley Civic Centre.

Head coach Jerry Bancks challenged his squad following a 4-2 home loss to the Ghostriders last Friday. He said the focus and

challenge remains the same heading into the second last weekend of the regular season.

“If I’m one of the younger players…and I see older guys kind of putting in half an effort, but still getting out for every power play, it sends a negative mes-sage,” Bancks said. “They get confused as to what expectations are and I think we’ve had a bit of that lately.”

The Dynamiters are expected to be without forward Austyn Moser this weekend, who Bancks said will serve a two-game suspension for a checking-from-be-hind major penalty in-curred Monday at Fern-ie.

That’s tough news for a team already short-staffed due to injuries as captain Jason Richter (upper body, week to week) remains on the shelf, along with for-ward-turned-defence-man Trey Doell (hand).

Doell skated this week and is close to a return, but remains day to day.

While he was in the

lineup in Friday’s 4-2 loss to Fernie, defence-man Justin Meier didn’t see much ice time and was then shutdown for Saturday’s double-over-time win at Beaver Val-ley and Monday’s 2-0 road win over the Ghostriders.

The rugged rear-guard has been dealing with a lower body injury for some time now and playing at what Bancks’ characterized as 80 per cent just hasn’t worked.

“It’s the same as with Richter,” Bancks said. “I’d like to get [Meier] to 100 per cent. We tried him at 80 per cent and it didn’t work. It’s up to physio when he’s ready to go again and we want to make sure we’re cau-tious.”

Richter and Meier will be critical to any post-season push by the Dynamiters, which very well could begin with a seven-game, all-out war with the Ghostriders in the first round.

Heading into the weekend, Fernie re-mains in third place in the Eddie Mountain Di-vision, but the Colum-

bia Valley Rockies (28-20-0-0) have pulled into a tie with the Ghostrid-ers as each team sits with 56 points.

With five games re-maining on their slate, the Ghostriders have one game in hand on the Rockies, which plays into their favour as they try to avoid a first-round matchup with the high-powered Nitros.

Unfortunately for Fernie, those five games see them face Kimber-ley twice, along with the Neil Murdoch Divi-sion-champion Nite-hawks (31-10-3-3), making for tough sled-ding heading towards

the post-season. What could deter-

mine the first-round matchup for the Dyna-miters comes Friday night when the Rockies visit Fernie.

Should the Rockies bypass the Ghostriders, KIJHL fans in the East Kootenay will be privy to a fierce Fernie-Kimber-ley first-round matchup.

To top it all off, the Dynamiters and Ghostriders face one another for good mea-sure to close out the reg-ular season, meeting once more Saturday, Feb. 20 (7:30 p.m.) at the Fernie Memorial Arena.

NFL’s Raiders sign extension to

remain in OaklandMichael WagaMan

Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. - Four weeks after being stymied in their effort to move to Los Angeles, the Raiders agreed to a one-year extension lease extension to re-main at the Oakland Coliseum on Thursday.

Raiders owner Mark Davis had been mulling multiple options to move his team since being passed over by the NFL’s other owners to relocate the Raiders to Southern California.

The St. Louis Rams were approved to move to Los Angeles in January, while the San Diego Char-gers have an option to join the Rams.

The agreement with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Joint Powers Authority guaran-tees that the Raiders will play the 2016 season in the same stadium they have called home since 1995. It also carries two one-year team options.

The deal still needs approval of the Oakland City Council and Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

c anaDian PreSSHAMILTON - The Flyin’ Hawaiian is a Hamilton

Tiger-Cat.Veteran receiver/kick-returner Chad Owens

agreed to a one-year deal with Hamilton on Thurs-day. The five-foot-nine, 180-pound Owens had spent the last six seasons with the Toronto Argo-nauts before becoming a free agent Tuesday.

Owens, 33, is a four-time CFL all-star who in 2010 was named the league’s top special-teams perform-er before being named its outstanding player in 2012. That season he had 94 catches for 1,328 yards and six TDs while accumulating a record 3,840 all-purpose yards.

Last year injuries limited Owens to just 13 games as he registered 55 catches for 570 yards and two touchdowns. But in Hamilton he’ll combine with Brandon (Speedy) Banks to potentially give the Ti-cats a dangerous 1-2 special-teams punch.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) A shake-up around midday will force you to regroup and look at a personal matter that’s import-ant to you. Nothing is as serious as it first appears to be. You have a tendency to manifest what you want -- just make sure that it’s something you truly want. Tonight: Go for the moment. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You could feel as if certain sit-uations are working against you. You can’t change the social scene, and you can’t control any-one but you. A sudden insight becomes likely if you choose to listen more carefully. This could be instrumental to your well-be-ing. Tonight: Enjoy the moment. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might be pleased with the outcome of a meeting. Whether it involves work or some oth-er type of commitment does not matter. You usually don’t mix your social life with your professional life, but you could make a new friend nonetheless. Tonight: Let it all hang out.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might be unusually emo-tional and abrupt in your dealings with others. Don’t be surprised if, when this mood passes, you forget about the issue altogether. People still might remember your sarcasm, though. Be careful. Tonight: Out till the wee hours. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could be taken aback by someone’s unpredictability and/or sudden news. In any case, you have what it takes to deal with what comes down the pike. You’re likely to have a knee-jerk reaction, after which you will detach. Tonight: Feed your mind, then relax with a favorite game. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Recognize that you keep a key person close because of his or her unpredictability and ability to think outside the box. Howev-er, there are moments when you could become frustrated with this person. Try to hold back judgment and just enjoy what is. Tonight: Visit over dinner. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might be unusually serious.

You are determined to accom-plish a key matter or carry out a key discussion. An element of chaotic excitement runs through everyone’s day in some form. Recognize that your timing could be off. Postpone for now. Tonight: TGIF. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might want to rethink a personal decision that has the potential to affect your daily life. If your focus involves a health matter, check in with a doc-tor before making any kind of dramatic change. Think before you act. Tonight: Be impulsive instead of controlling. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be overly tired, but because of an element of high stress and anxiety, you might not even realize it. Ride the adrenalin wave with care, and use it to accomplish what you must. Know that you will need a few days off soon. Tonight: Stop pushing yourself so hard. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You seem to be quieter than usual. A close loved one will be observing you, and might voice

his or her concern. Listen to your sixth sense when dealing with an important financial decision that has implications. Tonight: Happiest with one special per-son. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are unlikely to jump hurdles right now, especially since all you want is to have a conversa-tion. You will achieve a goal, but it will take more work than you think. Remain optimistic. Take your time and assess whether this path is the only one. To-night: At a favorite spot. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Examine the pros and cons of a financial decision. You might want to check out other op-tions first. You are resourceful, but don’t hesitate to reach out to someone else for his or her ideas. There’s no such thing as getting too much feedback. To-night: Pay bills, then decide. BORNTODAY Former U.S. President Abra-ham Lincoln (1809), naturalist Charles Darwin (1809), actress Christina Ricci (1980)

Dear Annie: My only sibling has stopped speaking to me. My brother had a son 26 years ago. He claims he knew nothing about the child until I told him six months ago that he should take responsibility for his oldest son. We had words, and he texted me not to contact him, ever, and to have a great life. I did call and left a message wishing him and his wife a Merry Christmas, but I never heard back. He’s holding me responsible for “keeping a secret,” while I am quite sure he knew all along that he had a son out there. He said some nasty things directly to me and has told outright lies to other people about me. But Annie, he is my brother. Do I just go away? Or do I send him birthday wishes next month? -- Grieving Sister Dear Sister: You can send any kind of wishes you like, but we can’t promise he’ll respond. Are you sure he knew about this child? If no one had ever spoken of it before, it’s possible he was truly unaware and angry that you kept the secret. Or, if you mentioned the son in front of his wife, it’s possible that he didn’t want her to know, and reacted by claiming ignorance. And of course, he could simply be ashamed that he has not financially or emotionally supported his son and, like many guilt-ridden people, became defensive. You can try apologizing, sincerely, for bringing up a subject that he wasn’t prepared to deal with, and then ask him how you can make things better. You also can try going through his wife to see if she will act as an intermediary on your behalf. The rest, sorry to say, is up to him. Dear Annie: Every day I do word scrambles and “spot the six differences” puzzles with two great people. But now I’m annoyed and upset. One time -- just once -- I started the puzzles before they arrived and now they keep calling me “cheaty pants” and refuse to give me the newspaper until they have already started. I don’t know whether I should confront them about it or leave it be. I think they should be fair, not rude. I know I shouldn’t start the puzzles until they can be there, but sometimes I get so impatient with them. I think they should be nice about it, too. -- Very Frustrated Dear Frustrated: All of you should be nice, which means name-calling is off-limits and no one starts the puzzles before everyone shows up. We recommend that you make the first move to put things back on track: Apologize for your original faux pas and ask them to please stop rubbing it in your face so you can start fresh. But if they keep acting like the mean girls in high school, bring your own newspaper and then you can do your own puzzles in peace. strength to all who knew her. Carol was born on Dec. 21, 1940 in Vancouver and lost her courageous battle in Cranbrook on Feb. 8, 2016.

Carol was a strong, caring person who was known for her amazing knowledge of a variety of topics, earning her the nickname of “Brittanica”. She had a love for animals, especially horses and dogs and for several years was involved with raising and showing dogs with the Cranbrook Kennel Club. It seems her love for animals grew out of the years she spent as a “farmer’’ in the 70’s in rural Cranbrook. Carol was also hooked on golf. She loved the game and competed all over the province along with her many golf buddies. She became involved with the BC Golf Association and was a highly qualified course rater for many years, a passion she reluctantly gave up in 2014. Carol was a member of the Cranbrook Golf Club for over 40 years, spending many of those years as the Ladies Club rules and handicap person. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cranbrook for over 25 years, and contributed substantially as a volunteer, taking on the role of bookkeeper for the past several years.

Carol is survived by her loving partner of 17 years, Bill Brock; her son Steve (lnge) of Hope; her son Michael of Cranbrook; grandson Dylan Welsh and his mother Debbie Welsh of Vernon; her brother Lyle (Sharon) Norlander of Vancouver and his children Jacquie, Susan, Paul, Mike and John; her stepchildren Michael (Paula) of Campbell River, Patrick (Dawn) of Cranbrook, Lesa of Red Deer, Chris (Jeanne) of Cranbrook and step-grandchildren Trent, James, Brandon, Aidan, Ashton and Hailey; her first husband Don Wilson of Cranbrook and niece Leslie. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernie and Viola, her infant daughter Marina Denise and her second husband Ron Gartside.

There will be no memorial service at Carol’s request but a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Carol can be made to the B.C. Cancer Agency or to the East Kootenay Hospital Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.

It was just a tiny, al-most imperceptible “chirp,” but it simultane-ously opened humani-ty’s ears to the music of the cosmos and proved Einstein right again.

In what is being hailed as one of the big-gest eureka moments in the history of physics, scientists announced Thursday that they have finally detected gravita-tional waves, the ripples in the fabric of space and time that Einstein predicted a century ago.

The news exhilarated astronomers and physi-cists. Because the evi-dence of gravitational waves is captured in audio form, the finding means astronomers will now be able to hear the soundtrack of the uni-verse and listen as vio-lent collisions reshape the cosmos.

It will be like going from silent movies to talkies, they said.

“Until this moment, we had our eyes on the sky and we couldn’t hear the music,” said Colum-bia University astro-physicist Szabolcs Marka, a member of the discovery team. “The skies will never be the same.”

An all-star interna-tional team of astro-physicists used an ex-quisitely sensitive, $1.1 billion set of twin instru-ments known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Ob-servatory, or LIGO, to detect a gravitational wave generated by the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion light-years from Earth.

The proof consisted of what scientists called a single chirp — in truth, it sounded more like a thud — that was picked up on Sept. 14. Astrono-mers played the record-ing at an overflowing news conference Thurs-day.

“That’s the chirp we’ve been looking for,” said Louisiana State University physicist Ga-briela Gonzalez, scien-tific spokeswoman for the LIGO team.

Some physicists said the finding is as big a deal as the 2012 discov-ery of the subatomic Higgs boson, known as the “God particle.” Some said this is bigger.

“It’s really compara-ble only to Galileo taking

up the telescope and looking at the planets,” said Penn State physics theorist Abhay Ashtekar, who wasn’t part of the discovery team.

Gravitational waves, postulated by Albert Einstein in 1916 as part of his theory of general relativity, are extraordi-narily faint ripples in space-time, the continu-um that combines both time and three-dimen-sional space. When massive objects like black holes or neutron stars collide, they gener-ate gravitational waves that stretch space-time or cause it to bunch up like a fishing net.

Scientists found indi-rect proof of gravitation-al waves in the 1970s by studying the motion of two colliding stars, and the work was honoured as part of the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics. But now scientists can say they have direct proof.

“It’s one thing to know sound waves exist, but it’s another to actu-ally hear Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,” said Marc Kamionkowski, a physicist at Johns Hop-kins University who wasn’t part of the dis-covery team. “In this case, we’re actually get-ting to hear black holes merging.”

In this case, the crashing of the two black holes stretched and squished Earth so that it was “jiggling like Jell-O,” but in a tiny, almost im-perceptible way, said David Reitze, LIGO’s ex-ecutive director.

The dual LIGO detec-tors went off just before 5 a.m. in Louisiana and emails started flying. But the finding had to be verified, using such means as conventional telescopes, before the scientists could say with confidence it was a grav-itational wave. They concluded there was less than a 1-in-3.5-mil-lion chance they were wrong, he said.

Reitze said that given how quickly they found their first wave, scien-tists expect to hear more of them, maybe even a few per month.

Detecting gravita-tional waves is so diffi-cult that Einstein figured scientists would never be able to hear them. The greatest scientific mind of the 20th century underestimated the technological know-

how of his successors. In 1979, the National

Science Foundation de-cided to give money to the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to come up with a way to detect the waves.

Twenty years later, they started building two LIGO detectors in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisi-ana, and they were turned on in 2001. But after years with no luck,

scientists realized they had to build a much more sensitive system, which was turned on last September.

Sensitivity is crucial because the stretching and squeezing of space-time by gravitational waves is incredibly tiny. Essentially, LIGO de-tects waves that pull and compress the entire Milky Way galaxy “by the width of your thumb,” said team member Chad Hanna of Pennsylvania State University.

Each LIGO detector has two giant perpen-dicular arms more than 2 miles long. A laser beam is split and travels both arms, bouncing off mirrors to return to the arms’ intersection.

Normally, the two beams are aligned so that they balance each other out and there’s nothing to hear. But if there’s a gravitational wave, it creates an in-credibly tiny mismatch, which is what LIGO de-tects. albert einstein: Right again
