At the Guildford Borough Bench, a bar atten-dant and the manageress of the Lion Hotel in Guildford were both fined £5 on two counts of

buying a round of drinks for other people. This was known as ‘treating’, and was forbidden during the war under DORA, the Defence of the Realm Act. In court, it was said that ‘treating was going on whole-sale, in spite of the law’. On July 14th, French National Day, the 1st Battalion The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) had a photo taken in front of a grand building. They look very smart and well disciplined. This was the regiment in which many Cranleigh men served. After their brave ex-ertions and considerable losses in the Battle of the Lys, they were having some rest this month in the area of Brandhoek, a few miles west of Ypres. Per-haps a reader knows where this photo was taken.

Joe Cheesman, the Cranleigh man who had be-come a prisoner-of-war in April, had been moved by his German captors from his work as a mechanic in a motor workshop. His letters home describe how, with other prisoners, he had been put into ‘a big, empty factory’, from which working parties went out every day. After a week, 140 of them were moved to another camp not far away. The food was not so good there but at least the camp was registered with the Red Cross, so that they had received some soap at last! Joe was not allowed to disclose his wherea-bouts in any of his letters, but after the war he told his family that he had not been taken to Germany, despite his address of ‘Limburg an der Lahn’, but was all the time behind the lines in Belgium. at home, though, his mother was told by the Central POW Committee that ‘the address “Limburg a/Lahn” is not sufficient for letters and parcels’, so Joe had not yet heard anything from his family.

The Hambledon Tribunal was still meeting every two weeks, trying to be fair in granting exemption from military service, while still securing as many men as possible for the armed services. Sir Charles Chad-wyck-Healey of Wyphurst – now St Joseph’s school – applied to the Tribunal on July 10th on behalf of his coachman, G.T. Card, aged 49, declaring that he ‘could not be any use in the Army’. ‘If the worst comes to the worst,’ he said, ‘I shall have to put him on the land.’ (This would have ensured he was ex-empt.) ‘I have been having German prisoners, but I have not been able to get much work out of them’ (laughter). It is worth noting that Sir Charles was us-ing a coach in 1918: perhaps it was because the use of cars was severely restricted.

The mood of local people may be seen in their popular songs. A song annual on sale this month by The Piano House in Guildford (price one shilling) in-cluded these titles: ‘There’s a ship that’s bound for Blighty’, ‘When the bells of peace are ringing’, ‘I nev-er knew how much I loved you till you said “Good-bye”’, ‘I don’t want to go back’ and ‘Ten days’ leave’.

In a different vein, the Canadian song ‘K-K-K-Katy’ strikes us as offensive nowadays, as it makes fun of someone with a stammer, but it was enormously

It’s the month when many bird species notably flock up after breeding.

There are various reasons why they do this but taking advantage of safety in numbers is a key one. Getting together affords protection while feeding, hunting, nesting and roosting.

Crane Spotter:tales from a Cranleigh birder

Meet the flockers

For some, forming a big flock aids migration and helps young birds stay in family parties and navi-gate to their wintering quarters.

I always find July a bit depressing bird-wise because it is when the gulls start appearing again over Cranleigh and the first wading birds begin returning from their Arctic breeding grounds. This signals that autumn and winter are surely on their way – seemingly before summer has even started.

At least when flocks stop off to refuel, in fields, or on muddy pools and estuaries, the percentage of first-summer birds enables us to measure breeding success. And there is always a chance of finding an even rarer species among them.

For many species the numbers in the flocks are dwindling, and as I write this in the early summer there are worrying reports from bird recorders in Surrey and around the country. It appears that many of the birds we were expecting - such as Nightingales, Whitethroats, Swifts, House Martins, Swallows and various warblers – either did not arrive at all this year or were notably down in num-bers on last year.

July

People are asking if something catastrophic has happened in these species’ breeding grounds and questioning the influence of climate change. The answers will take some time to process.

But, as always in the birding world, I am reminded to enjoy every bird for its own sake and not to get blasé about its apparent common status. I have witnessed locally how status can change in just a few years. In a future Cranleigh Magazine article I will be writing more on the birds we in Cranleigh and district have lost.

The world’s worst example of decline is a stark warning of what can happen. In North America in 1749 the Passenger Pigeon was so numerous that one flock was reported as extending three or four English miles in length and over a mile in breadth.Writing about this later, one Pehr Kalm* wrote: . . .

Flying high: the biggest local record counts of birds were for the Mallard, pictured here, and the Wood Pigeon

Wood PigeonColumba palumbus

‘they flew so closely together that the sky and the sun were obscured by them, the daylight becoming sensibly diminished by their shadow. The big as well as the little trees in the woods, sometimes cov-ering a distance of seven English miles, became so filled with them that hardly a twig or a branch could be seen which they did not cover; on the thicker branches they had piled themselves up on one another’s backs, quite about a yard high.’

By the 1830s there were still huge numbers. But 70 years later they had gone from the wild. The last

sure record of a wild bird was reportedly a female, shot in 1900 by a 14-year old boy in Ohio. Extinc-tion followed years of mass slaughter by pigeon hunters and the very last bird, Martha, died in a zoo in 1914.

This got me investigating what record flocks of dif-ferent birds are recorded for the Cranleigh area and it clearly shows a worrying trend. The biggest were, in nearly all cases, last century.

My up to date ‘top of the flocks’ list, drawn from my own observations and those reported from other observers in Surrey Bird Club literature, can be seen on page 18.

Of course, I keep counting the flocks I see but the total is now nearly always way below the records of the 1900s.

We are only 18 years into the new millennium. I wonder how bad it can get. We should all remem-ber the fate of the Passenger Pigeon.*quoted in Errol Fuller’s book Extinct Birds, Oxford University Press.

Chris FinillMarathon Runner

I was born in Harrow, Middlesex on the last day of 1958. I went to a local state primary school which coincidently was the same school Sir Roger Bannis-

ter attended. I then went to Harrow County Grammar School (a few years above me were Clive Anderson and Michael Portillo) and from there I went onto study Economics at the University of Surrey. I met my wife, Julia, a couple of years later when she was nursing at Guy’s Hospital. She came from Cranleigh and, although we didn’t settle in Cranleigh immediately, we had gravitated towards it by 1995 as she was familiar with the village from her childhood and I had already fallen in love with Winterfold. Since my early childhood I have loved running. Ironical-ly it all started because of my mother’s smoking habit. I used to run up to the shops to buy her cigarettes which in those days I could do, even as an 8 year old. Each time I would time myself to see if I could beat my previous personal best. Running around the garden and counting laps and things like that were just part of my

childhood and upbringing. My grandfather had been a very good cyclist and my mother a hurdler. My father excelled as a cricketer and he was desper-ate that I should follow in his footsteps out to the crease but I had no real aptitude nor attitude for it which was a disappointment to him. Instead I made my way into athletics. Running has therefore always been inside me, a passion from the moment I was old enough to put one foot in front of the other. My childhood heroes were David Bedford and Ron Hill. Added to this, my geography teacher at school was a 2.19 marathon runner and a close friend who progressed to 2.14 also served to inspire me in those early days back in the mid-seventies. Having started university in 1977 I joined the cross country club, running my first marathon when I was 20 as an exchange student at Michigan State University in the USA. Back then in 1979 running a marathon wasn’t a particularly fashionable thing to

do but these days the challenge has really gathered pace. At that time I was obviously very inexperienced and I went off at a ridiculously fast pace, like you do when you are 20. I ran 2:40 for this first marathon so I comfortably broke 3 hours but I was in bits at the end. I collapsed at the finishing line and was taken into an ambulance to have a mas-sage and to generally be put back together again.

Thankfully I recovered pretty quickly but this was a good thing to go through because I learnt early on how not to run marathons, like people tend to when they run their first ones. Chris Brasher and John Disley were the guys who founded the London Marathon based on what they had seen work so well in New York. I never met Chris, but I did meet John in May 2011 when I was selected as a test athlete for the 2012 Olympic marathon course. I ran the first London Marathon

in 1981, then the second, then the third . . . and over the years I have run 33 consecutive London marathons from 1981- 2013 in under 3 hours and that is a world record for any mara- thon runner. Some London Marathons have proved tougher than others. I broke my arm in this years event, my 38th London. I had gone through the first 5km and everything was fine . . . but at about 3 ½ – 4 miles I was clipped from behind and fell crashing to the ground, landing on my right humerus. I subsequently found that I had broken it in 4 places but at the time I got up immediately like boxer who had just been hit. I checked in to the St John Ambulance tent

where I was given a basic, temporary sling and two paracetamol tablets, running the remaining 22 miles to the finish in The Mall. People ask why I carried on running and the explanation is simple. Having run the first 37 Londons I was desperate to finish the 38th and maintain my Ever - Present record. I was never an outstanding runner at school nor for my club on the track over say 5 or 10 miles. I have, however, trained with athletes who have competed at Olympic level or won national titles at such shorter distances. I didn’t train 100 miles a week when I was in my 20s and this meant, looking back, that I could carry on training at a higher level as I went into my 30s and 40s. I suppose I’m relatively ‘well preserved’ for an athlete in the sense that I didn’t really push myself that hard when I was younger. If I’d run 100 miles a week when I was 25 I would have run faster marathons then but I probably would not have competed as effectively as an older athlete. Anyway, my marathons evolved into ultra-races (races over marathon distance) and I ran for Great Britain in

various European and World championship events. My Ultra-races then evolved into a trans-continental attempt which I undertook in the Autumn of 2011, running across America from California to New York. I ran this along with a running partner of mine called Steve Pope, supported by my wife Julia and Ben Southern who’s also from Cranleigh and who made a documentary of our trip.

Steve and I ran about 40 miles per day for 79 days and 22 hours to successfully complete the distance of 3,100 miles. At times during that event I felt like giving up. But when one has committed as much as I had I realised I couldn’t live with myself if I simply jacked it in. There were moments on the run when it was very, very tough, but that’s the nature of a big challenge.

As far as strategy was concerned we obviously didn’t go out and run 40 miles as fast as we could and then take the rest of each day off. Instead, we would be out on the road by 8am at the earliest and off by at 6pm at the latest. That doesn’t mean we ran from 8am to 6pm, it depended how far away from the start point we were staying at the time, but we would take it slowly taking

advantage of the great US coffee shops and diners along our route. You don’t run across the continent by going off too quickly or rising to the challenge too eager-ly. You have to ask your body nicely. We had a support vehicle and Julia would drive us to the motels at the end of each day where we would try to recover before start-ing all over again the next day. In tandem with the run we managed to raise about £14,000 for Help for Heroes. This whole challenge needed planning both in time and finance. The Governors at The Duke of Kent School in Ewhurst where I have served as Bursar for over 20 years, were kind enough to give me a sabbatical, so I thankfully had a job to return to. Steve was self-em-ployed so it was easier for him in some respects. Julia was also given a sabbatical from RHW, the Guildford firm of solicitors. We funded the trip almost entirely privately but we had a some very welcome sponsorship from RHW and kit sponsorship from a company based in the States. Over the years some races stand out - a couple in particular. Representing Great Britain I came 14th in the World 100km championships in Taiwan in 2003. It would have been a long way to go to run badly! Later, in 2008 I ran a 24 – hour race, a race where you simply see how far you can run in 24 hours. I ran 151 miles – ranking me 14th in the world that year. I was able to keep going on each occasion with lots of support from others. Ra-cing takes a lot out of you physically and the support of family and friends is crucial. In 24 hour races you don’t have to and indeed can’t keep moving all the time. That said, within the 24 hour period of my 151 mile run (607 laps of a track) I was probably moving forwards, either by walking or running, for pretty much the whole time apart from 15 minutes . . . so there’s not a lot of rest but an awful lot of mind games. This is especially true at 4am with very few people around, 16 hours of running done and 8 hours to go. Urrgghh!

Running is a complete way of life for me, I couldn’t imagine not running. However, just at the moment of course I have the broken arm! Had I not been injured I would have run into work today and would probably have run home again as well. If you suggest a normal

Within my own family my three children have all been cajoled and press ganged into running the marathon because it has been part of their life as well. I’ve been running marathons since before they were born and they have been to London marathons since they were tod-dlers. My eldest, Tom is now 29, Jo my middle daughter is 27 and Nick my youngest son is 24. They have all run the London Marathon, as has Julia, my wife, who’s run it twice and been a spectator at the remaining 36 editions. Tom and Jo both ran it when they were 18 at Godalming College. Nick ran it later when he was 22. Jo actually loves running and has run other races, the most exotic being the Rio Marathon. On occasions in my early years at the Duke of Kent School I coached athletics but sadly the busy-ness of the job takes over and there’s less time to volunteer. That said, as recently as a couple of weeks ago I had a half hour session showing some Year 2s at the School my 38 London Marathon medals. Whatever else they are there’s a lot of bling on the table! As the children were so young their eyes popped out on seeing them. It was great to see their reaction and at the same time give them a sense of what marathon running is about.

working week with a journey into work and a journey home each day, given 5 weekdays that’s 10 journeys. I would normally do 5 of those on foot and 5 in the car. However, I don’t wake up every morning thinking ‘I have got to run’, it’s not an obsession. If it had been an obsession I doubt I could have continued. I recognise when I feel like running and when I don’t. I try be sens-ible, not robotic or unthinking about it. When I run I don’t battle with others runners or race them in my mind. I race myself, I run my race. If my race is good enough to beat another runner then fine, if it’s not that’s fine too. Obviously in the last 100 – 200 metres I can become very competitive with other indi-vidual athletes. But getting drawn into a situation where you are trying to overtake one particular runner rather than run your own race say half way through the race is a mistake. You mustn’t get drawn into what other people are doing because it doesn’t usually work. Running can seem a very solitary sport really and I do a lot of running by myself, but it can be incredibly social too – so many of my friends are people I know through running and there’s a massive sense of cameraderie.

Don't give up!

In terms of daily fitness and health I have to be sensible with what I eat. Basically although I have a sweet tooth I try to limit the amount of cake and chocolate I consume! I’m not a huge meat eater, I eat a lot of vegetables and fruit and I drink quite a lot of milk. I don’t have masses of alcohol. Running allows a more relaxed approach to what one is eating than might otherwise be the case – one of its many benefits. Running is a real meritocracy sport. You are judged by your position in a race or through a stopwatch so if you want to be good, you have got a clear path in front of you in terms of what you need to do to achieve what-ever you set as your target. Whereas in another sport, perhaps football for example whether player X is better than player Y is debatable. Whether player X should be picked over player Y – it’s all subjective. With running your ability and performance is so transparent that sub-

jectivity doesn’t arise and this can be very motivating. Those who are successful athletes are the people that go out there when it’s pouring with rain and don’t give up. Mo Farah’s a great runner but he would be nowhere without dedication and training, together with his talent and determination. Looking to the future I am hopeful to run for the rest of my life. With the status of an ‘Ever – Present’ at the London Marathon (there are 11 of us, all men) having run all 38 marathons there’s pressure! It’s a kind of ball and chain around my ankle if you like but it’s also quite motivating because I’ve got an annual target to maintain every year, to run the London marathon and keep up as an Ever – Present. Maybe I’ll reach 50 London Mara-thons in April 2030. Will I achieve this? Well, first and foremost, I will need a pulse! In other words I will try and run it for as long as I am alive, but who knows how long that will be. I’m not prepared to commit on that. But yes, if I get to 90 and am able bodied – if I could I would still run - why not? What’s preferable – running something like that or sitting on a sofa watching TV? I commend young people to try a full range of sports in order to work out what really appeals. It might be running, football or any other sport. I am biased towards running and I’ve discovered as I’ve got older, that be-cause it’s not a contact sport it’s less physically brutal. It’s a ‘life sport’ like swimming or to some extent cycling. By contrast, Rugby for example, is very different and can have more age-related limitations! If you’re talking about maturing into an athlete that achieves something and enjoys it, that’s a really long-term thing and like all things that are long – term you mustn’t grab it too enthusiastically. In other words, there are people out there who could have been great runners and maybe were so keen when they were 13 or 14 but

have become totally disillusioned later with the sport. They drop out and turn to something else and never became the great 25 – year – old runner that they could have become. So whether it’s running or football or any other sport, I think you need to keep a sense of balance when you are young. That’s why I recommend consid-ering other sports as well and work out at a relatively slow pace, what you really like. With athletics, it’s a very broad – church – 100m is a very different race to 800m and 800m is very different to 5000m and 5000m is nothing like throwing a javelin. So if you go to an athletics track there’s probably something out there that you can really enjoy and be good at. The trick in life is discover what you're good at. All of us have the potential to discover some particular skill within that we might

Finally, I am very involved with ‘Parkrun’ in Cranleigh which is a running event that takes place each Saturday at 9.00am in Bruce McKenzie Memorial Field. It draws people from Cranleigh and surrounding areas and is ef-fectively a local running club. It’s for anybody who wants to run or simply wants to keep fit and be out in the open air. Its 5km, and you can run it or walk it. By 10 o’clock people are usually going home or sitting in the Leisure Centre having a cup of coffee, so it’s very friendly. It’s not competitive as such other than with oneself. It’s 4pm and the cravings hit . . . just a piece a cake or a couple of biscuits, or maybe an ice cream or a bar of choc-olate and a coffee…anything to give you some energy! Or

maybe you crave a bag of crisps . . . all that saltiness and crunchiness . . . yummy!

What many people don’t realise however is that those crav-ings are clues to underlying problems. Some of us might just think that we have a sweet tooth but let’s dig a little deeper.

Our ideal blood sugar level is 4g or the same amount as contained in ONE GRAPE!! This small amount is always there to ensure that we have a constant supply of energy and fuel for our brain, blood and organs. When that blood sugar level is raised at all (from any of the above snacks, as well as hidden sugar in soups and sauces; also simple car-bohydrates such as bread, white potatoes and white pasta) the body goes into crisis management. The brain instructs the pancreas to produce insulin, a powerful hormone. Insu-lin firstly checks to see whether the muscles have any space to store some glucose, which is then kept as glycogen - the perfect fuel for muscles. If the muscles are full, insulin then

Running On Empty

checks in with the liver, which also stores glycogen to pre-vent you from waking up at night feeling hungry etc. If you ate a recent meal then your liver will be full of glycogen.

Where does the excess sugar from the blood go if the mus-cles and liver are full? It has to be stored somewhere, as it’s too dangerous to leave it circulating in the bloodstream. The only other storage option is to convert the excess sugar to fat and store it in your fat cells. This is why insulin is known as your fat controller. If you are putting on weight, check your sugar intake first before opting for all those low fat products which often contain sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them taste ‘nice’.

The body can also only use healthy fats-unprocessed and as natural as possible so that the body recognises them. Un-healthy fats cannot be used and are therefore stored away in the fat cells in order to protect your organs from damage. Healthy fats include avocados, plain nuts and seeds, coco-nut oil, grass fed organic butter or cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and a few others. Try to avoid processed cooking oils such as sunflower, rapeseed, vegetable and soybean

energy . . . more hunger, especially a craving for sugars and carbs. Continued imbalance in insulin regulation may lead to insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or diabetes, types 1 & 2.

Having talked about the role of sugar, what about those salt cravings? A craving for salt may be a symptom of high stress levels in your life. Your adrenal glands, small triangu-lar glands situated on top of each kidney, produce the stress hormones needed when a stressor is present. These days our adrenal glands very seldom get to rest or wind down as we are under constant stress. When they begin to become depleted you may start to feel ‘tired but wired’, it may be a struggle to get out of bed in the morning, you may need coffee to kick you into action, you may get a second wind at night at around 9pm or you may start craving salt in the af-ternoon. If you begin to feel like you are walking through treacle and have no energy whatsoever, please seek medical attention as this is a serious indication of adre-nal burnout.

How to avoid running on empty:

1. Eat a palm sized portion of protein at every meal2. Eat a small portion of healthy fats with each meal3. Eat lots of rainbow vegetables at every meal4. Stay hydrated with 1-2 litres water per day5. Eat regular meals

oils as they undergo much processing to appear clean and shiny. These processes cause the formation of cell damag-ing inflammatory compounds called free radicals.

By eating food in its whole, unprocessed natural form, our bodies use a lot of digestive energy to break it down into its component parts. Proteins break down into amino ac-ids, carbohydrates into simple sugars and fat into fatty ac-ids. Without insulin in the mix, food calories are not sent to the fat cells but are used for energy inside your other cells. However, if there are high levels of insulin then the energy is locked away in your fat cells. Insulin turns OFF your body’s fat burning ability and so there is only one option to get more

JULYKeep Your Garden

Running

Put saucer trays filled with water under potted plants, and allow them to soak it up from the bottom. Don't allow the plants to sit in water for long periods of time.

Plants can struggle in heat waves, so keep an eye on them for signs of strain. Look out for drooping plants and brown leaves. Plants with these signs can be helped with a deep drink of water.

It’s important to pay attention to newly planted plants during a heat wave or periods of drought. They need to be watered more often, and never allowed to dry out.

Don’t use sprinklers during the warmest part of the day as most of the water will evaporate before it reaches the ground. If you must water during the day, water manually at the base of the plant.

As the heat of the season rises, sum-mer weather is not only tough on gardeners but on our plants as well.

The good news is the heat won’t last forever. In the meantime why not try these tips for keeping your garden running.

Mechanical Engineering Services, founded by Jack Bruford, is situated on the Alfold Road, just outside Cranleigh village.

Formed on an ethos of high quality servicing and repair of vehicles, at fair cost to the public, Mechani-cal Engineering Services has been running for ten years now, moving to its current site just off the A281 nine years ago. The site has now expanded to be-come a leading Main Dealership Alternative.

Mechanical Engineering Services work with all makes and models of car and commercial vehicles, and also boast a staff of highly qualified Main Dealer Master Technicians who specialise in various par-ticular makes - Meet the team on the new company website www.mescranleigh.co.uk . If your car is under three years old, and still covered by dealership warranty, any work undertaken by Mechanical Engineering Services will preserve that warranty, so you needn’t worry about going back to the dealership directly. MES has invested heavily in dealership-level diag-nostics facilities as well at the technicians trained to use them, which allows them to deliver a thorough, accurate, diagnosis and fix any problems quick-ly. From just a simple fault diagnosis right up to a complete module replacement and re-coding, MES is very proud of their competitive pricing, whatever your needs. Unlike many other garages, Mechanical Engineer-ing Services (MES) will actually collect your vehicle

for you, work on it to a level above and beyond the industry standard, fully valet the vehicle, and deliver it back to you at home or work. Even better, both collection / delivery and valet are absolutely free of charge. Leave your car at home and come back in the evening to find it exactly where you left it, but with all required works fully complete. There are now 9 courtesy cars and 3 courtesy vans available for customers use, at no extra expense. Keeping customers mobile has always been a keen focus for the team. Another ever-popular reason to choose MES as your local vehicle care centre. MES has recently invested in its very own purpose built MOT testing facility on site. Should your vehicle fail its MOT, then a Service Advisor will always contact you before letting the workshop carry out any work at all, and don’t forget - any retest required is done free of charge! There are quite often service and MOT deals on offer, so keep an eye out to find a deal to suit you. As a homegrown local business, Mechanical Engi-neering Services is a proud example of local Cran-leigh ingenuity. Always striving to be top of their game, the team at MES are dedicated to providing local Cranleigh and Guildford customers the most advanced technology available. This, as well as keeping any repairs cost efficient and optimally ef-fective, whilst offering unparalleled customer ser-vice. Whether you require a simple service or a fault diag-nosed and repaired, you can rest assured that MES will treat your vehicle as if it were their own, with the upmost of care and attention.

Shere Village Cinema. Battle of the Sexes( Thursday July 5). Based on the true story of the 1973 ten-nis match between ladies champion Billy Jean King and veteran player, self confessed male chauvinist, Bobby Rigg to settle superiority between the sexes. It settled little but involved the start of equal pay for top tennis players and raised the profiles of both contenders. We also witness the development of Billy Jean’s relationship with another woman, acted by Emma Stone.

Darkest Hour (Sunday July 15) stars Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill at the start of World War II. He deserv-edly won the best actor Oscar, as well as the BAFTA and Golden Globe, for this impersonation of the great man. He had to convince his cabinet colleagues, parliament, the king and the nation to stand up against the might of the Nazi forces rolling across Europe. That we are free to de-cide whether we want to be part of the Europe we helped to liberate is largely due to the strong will and tenacity of this most famous of British leaders. He wanted a united Europe to stand up against Russia.

Helpful information on the Cranleigh Arts Centre and Shere Village Cinema is on their websites.

Films for JULY 2018 in the Cranleigh area.

The Arts Centre. The Shape of Water (Thursday July 12) stars Sally Hawkins in a beauty and beast modern retelling in which a cleaner in a secret military research establishment falls in love with a creature which combines human and amphibian features. We observe the unfeeling behaviour of the scientists which brings home the truth that alien life in the view of our rulers must always be subordinated to the perceived good of the state. A strange, strong fable for our time.

Finding Your Feet (Thursday July 19) is an ideal film for the mid summer escapist mood. Set in London, about people in their 60s and 70s it has a popular cast of British performers as you would expect in a “Marigold Hotel” type of yarn. Imelda Staunton plays a snooty mansion inhabit-ant who finds he husband has been cheating on her with her best friend. She leaves to join her free spirit sister played by Celia Imre who introduces her to pot smoking Timothy Spall. They join a dance class where Staunton and Spall becoming partners. You can guess the rest of this enjoyable diversion.

I Tonya (Thursday July 26) is a story based on the in-famous physical attack on Nancy Kerrigan the champion US ice skater, at the 1994 winter Olympics in Lilleham-mer, by a supporter of her rival Tonya Harding. This films is focused on the working class Harding , played brilliantly by Margot Robbie, her abusive mother played by Allison Jenney (who was Oscar nominated) and the low life types who plotted with her husband to damage Kerrigan. Ker-rigan, the victim hardly gets a look in this slanted version of what happened. Another very enjoyable film for the summer.

BOOK REVIEWRunning On Emptyby S. E. Durrant

'This is such a consider-ate book. AJ is caring for his family as best he can, but an 11-year-old can only do so much.' - Waterstones Customer

AJ's grandfather has always been the one to hold his strange family together, so when he passes away things start to

untie at the ends. AJ is concerned about his parents but they don't really seem to notice. In order to deal with his heartache and to keep his unease at bay, AJ does what he and his grand-father did best: running.

AJ is a boy who loves to run. Swept away on the belief that anyone can attain their dream after watching the Olympics, all he wants to do is run on the hallowed track where he saw his hero Usain Bolt win gold.

All around the Olympic Park, aiming for the cross country trials, running to escape, AJ only seems to be going ever closer to disaster. AJ himself is delightful - sometimes moody, but a flawlessly understood young teenager just doing what he can to keep things together.

A touching but unusual story, although AJ's position is out of the ordinary, a lot of the topics addressed will be familiar to many young readers. Running On Empty is a exceptional book about false beginnings and emotional adventures, with faith as the defini-tive finishing line.

A novel approach to relaxation and stress relief. A two-hour class that combines yoga, medita-tion and sound healing to provide a completely

‘chilled’ state of mind.

The class begins with simple yoga stretches - suitable for beginners or regular practitioners - to relax the body and quieten the mind. These prepare for a guided meditation that teaches how to explore your subconscious and further stills the mind. The event ends with a sound healing ses-sion - popularly known as a ‘gong bath’ - that allows the listener to enter a trance-like deep relaxation.

Yoga and Meditation have established long histories of benefits in terms of health, mental stability, intuitive aware-ness and so forth. Sound healing is also an ancient art but its rising popularity (classes in London are often over-booked) reflects a growing acceptance of its medical and mental benefits. What better way to get over the stresses of life, or to follow up on the idea of taking better care of yourself?

Classes are held in Rudgwick and supervised by Stephen Hill. He’s a local teacher and healer qualified in all three disciplines, as well as holding a Degree in Philosophy. For more information go to Stephen’s website: www.sjhyoga.com

Organisers of St John Ambulance’s Cadet Unit in Cranleigh are appealing for people to volunteer as youth leaders, to support young people wanting to become the next genera-tion of life savers. St John Ambulance believes every young person should have the opportunity to learn basic life saving skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Cadets, who are aged from 10 to 17 years old, learn a huge range of important life skills, including first aid, as they work towards their Grand Prior Award – the highest award a Cadet can achieve.

Anyone interested in volunteering should be prepared to give a minimum of two hours a week. All training, includ-ing a first aid qualification, essential skills for youth work and safeguarding children, will be provided by St John Ambulance. The role may be suitable for someone who is seeking a career in youth work.

For more information please contact James Roberts on 07825 713 949 or email [email protected] visit the volunteering vacancies page on the website at www.sja.org.uk or call 0303 003 0101.

Wild Facelift for Fundraising

Elephant! Young art lovers from a Surrey school have helped

give David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s old elephant donation collection box a wild new look.

The students from the art club at St Catherine’s School in Bramley, near Guildford, held a competition to create the design for the elephant’s paint job.

The winner was an eye-catching pattern dreamed up by 13-year-old Leah. Her clever design is made up of a mosaic of animal markings, including tiger stripes, leopard spots and giraffe patchwork.

The students then picked up their paintbrushes and set about bringing the old elephant back to life with its brand new coat of many colours.

But a new look elephant needed a brand new name – so DSWF turned to its supporters for ideas. After an appeal on social media, more than 30 names were suggested!Jo Elphick, DSWF’s Education Manager said: “After much deliberation our smart new elephant has been named

Bramley – an apt choice we hope you’ll agree. If you spot her, please remember to feed her generously – she likes coins but loves notes!”

Look out for Bramley the elephant donation collection box over the coming months – not only will she be taking pride of place outside DSWF’s Shalford offices, she will also be packing her trunk and heading out to DSWF events.DSWF works to fight wildlife crime, protect endangered species and engage with local communities to protect their native wildlife across Asia and Africa. The foundation supports projects which help elephants, including an el-ephant orphanage in Zambia, which works to rehabilitate stricken elephant calves.

You can help DSWF’s vital work by donating to its projects or by adopting an elephant - visit our website at www.davidshepherd.org for more information.

Ever wondered what life is really like at Elmbridge Village? Ready to be surprised?

Discover the Retirement Village lifestyle

Elmbridge Village in Cranleigh, Surrey, is an established retirement village set within 28 acres of Surrey countryside. The village offers a stylish collection of properties for people aged 60 and above, including bungalows and new apartments. The village has very recently undergone a multi-million pound enhancement and village life now evolves around Elmbridge Manor, a central clubhouse offering exclusive facilities for residents including a restaurant, bar, library and venue hall. And this Summer, the Arun House development consisting of 20 high specification apartments launches, with over 25% of the properties already reserved off-plan. It’s certainly not hard to see why this retirement village is proving very popular with retirees across the country.

A morning at Elmbridge Village may start with a leisurely stroll around the vast manicured grounds – which are pet friendly too! Then you could pop along to the coffee morning and catch up with fellow residents in the restaurant or pop to the library to pick up a new book. As lunchtime arrives, you might attend one of the many activities held at the village; computer club, bridge club, bowls, medau, whist, table tennis, art group or choir to name a few.

Your afternoon may then be spent at the local theatre or playing a round of golf. You can host family and friends anytime at the village and your guests can stay overnight in one of the beautiful guest suites within Elmbridge Manor. And as the gardening and cleaning are handled on your behalf, you can simply relax and enjoy your retirement without any of the hard work!

When you buy a property at Elmbridge Village, you’re not just buying the bricks and mortar of the building; you’re buying into a unique lifestyle that allows you to enjoy your retirement in a stunning location, with superb facilities and complete peace of mind.

Lots of excitement as Cranleigh ASC hosted the Cranleigh Open meet on 11 June at Cranleigh Leisure Centre. Over Sunday evening the pool

was transformed to a competition environment with timing pads, timing boards and diving blocks. Early on Sunday morning nervous and excited swimmers, parents and officials clad in white, descended on the Leisure Centre from 8 clubs in Surrey, all hoping to swim Personal Bests and possibly take home a medal! Cranleigh ASC was delighted to welcome and compete against swimmers from Dorking SC, Wandsworth SC, Box Hill SC, Seabyrd, Farnham SC, Wey Valley SC and Leatherhead SC.

Cranleigh Amateur

Swimming Club

Cranleigh Open Meet had a range of 11 events to choose including 400m Freestyle, 200m of each stroke including Butterfly, Individual Medleys and 50m sprints, for swimmers aged from 9 to 19. The atmosphere was phenomenal with swimmers cheer-ing and supporting their team members and enjoy-ing time together. This was the first Open Meet with Cranleigh’s new Chairlady, Carla Stevens, at the helm and she was thrilled with the success . . . ’it was great to see such team spirit from the swim-mers, parents and clubs. Many thanks to all the of-ficials and volunteers who helped us make the day a success.’

Just a few of the medals won by Cranleigh Swimming Club

Cranleigh Open Meet 11 June 2018

Coach David Whorlow was very pleased with the results from all Cranleigh ASC swimmers, includ-ing 22 Gold Medals across 11 swimmers, showing the hard work in training has truly paid off. He said, ‘it was good to see so many Cranleigh swimmers competing on Sunday with everyone coping brilliant-ly against strong competition from visiting clubs. I was very proud with how well all the swimmers per-formed.’ It was nice to see our 18+ club members continuing to set the standards high for the younger swimmers to aspire to, with club records from Sam Westerman (50 Fly) and Jasmin Arciero (200 Individual medley). Special mentions should go to our rising star 12 year old Sophie Moore who won 5 Gold Medals and our other age group winners Juliette Small (14), Jasmin (19), Oliver Stone (15). Well done all swimmers. If you are interested in joining Cranleigh ASC, please come down and see us on a Sunday evening at Cranleigh Leisure Centre from 4.30pm onwards or visit our website www.cranleighsc.org We offer two free taster trial sessions, for children wishing to see if they enjoy it.

Louise is a local artist who specialises in paper mache and sculptures of heads based on family history. She has worked alongside of the students who have been influ-enced by her techniques, whilst still including the things they are passionate about.

Saints, Dragons & Other Creatures

It is a fascinating exhibition as it reveals the influence between artist to student but also student to artist.

As part of the Artist in Residence Louise has made sculp-ture specifically for the school, she created Saint Joseph, Saint George and Saint Patrick for the school Chapel and in her own work made a series of gangsters based on 1920's Australian's arrested in Sidney. The students have made Dragons and other creatures.
